Johnny English 2 gets the green light We reported earlier today that Universal was pulling the plug on the film Cartel, just five weeks before filming was to begin and now it seems they're taking a safer route by resurrecting a 2003 comedy. Variety is reporting that Universal is prepping a sequel to the British comedy Johnny English.
Although the film made less than $28 million domestically, the Rowan Atkinson film took in $161 million worldwide. Atkinson will reprise his role as the title character and the film was said to be in the same vein as the original, in terms of story and budget ($40 million).
Hamish McColl wrote the screenplay for the sequel, and he also wrote the 2007 film Mr. Bean's Holiday, which also starred Atkinson. St. Trinian's director Oliver Parker has been attached to direct the sequel and it was said that the film is preparing to start production in August.
