‘Lightyear’ Gets Disney+ Premiere Date
Image
Disney and Pixar have announced that their latest animated feature Lightyear will be available for streaming on Disney+ starting August 3rd.

“‘Lightyear’ looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said the film’s director Angus MacLane in a statement. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see ‘Lightyear,’ it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”

A sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the Toy Story toy, Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger (The Gray Man‘s Chris Evans) after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew.

Prequels, sequels, and spin-offs are all the major studios seem to be cranking out lately, and now it’s Pixar’s turn. This time we get Lightyear, the film that Andy saw in 1995, the one that made him fall in love with Buzz Lightyear and want nothing more than a Buzz toy for his birthday. I may be wrong, but I’m not sure there’s much here to inspire any child to want a Buzz Lightyear toy, Andy should have just stuck to Woody.

We open with Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger, as he lands on a new undiscovered planet with his Space Ranger partner, Alisha Hawthorne,...

Box Office: ‘Lightyear’ Opening Weekend Struggling to Outpace ‘Jurassic World Dominion’
Image
Infinity isn’t a practical milestone at the box office, so Disney’s “Lightyear” will have to settle for a 20.7 million opening day and beyond.

Pixar’s spinoff of its “Toy Story” series blasted off on Thursday night with a respectable 5.2 million from preview screenings. However, the film is now tracking for an opening in the range of 50 million to 55 million from 4,255 theaters in North America, below the initial expectations that pegged the film for a debut between 70 million and 80 million. What’s more, “Lightyear” is struggling to unseat Universal’s “Jurassic World Dominion” from the top slot of domestic charts during the dino-sequel’s sophomore weekend.

There’s certainly winning ways to look at the “Lightyear” opening, as its projected haul would easily mark the highest debut for an animated movie since the onset of the pandemic in North America. Family audiences have been somewhat skittish to return to...

Box Office: Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’ Buzzes to 5.2M in Previews
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Pixar and Disney’s Lightyear buzzed to 5.2 million in box office previews before officially opening Friday in more than 4,200 theaters across North America.

Chris Evans voices the iconic Space Ranger in the Toy Story origin spinoff, which marks Pixar’s return to the big screen after seeing several of its animated family films head straight for Disney+ due to Covid-19.

Tracking suggests that Lightyear could secure an opening weekend gross of 70 million to 85 million at the domestic box office (the pic will serve as a key test for the strength of the family marketplace in the pandemic era). Disney and Pixar are counting on Father’s Day to lure dads and their kids to the cinema. Lightyear began rolling out Wednesday in some Imax and premium large format screens before commencing preview screenings in select cinemas on Thursday afternoon.

Lightyear – Review

Sci-fi Action Adventure – The definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans), the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger on an intergalactic adventure. This weekend’s big new studio release is another bit of a Summer celebration (as if there aren’t lots of such warm weather happenings). Is it because it’s an animated feature? Sure, it’s the first big one of the season, but there are other, major reasons. Well, it is a prequel to a much-beloved nearly thirty-year-old franchise. Oh, but most importantly, it’s from the fine folks at Pixar. And why are they cheering down at their HQ in Emeryville,...

Pixar’s ‘Lightyear’: Film Review
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The conflict in Pixar’s ageless 1995 breakthrough feature, Toy Story, hinged on the displacement anxiety of old-fashioned pull-string cowboy doll Woody when his young owner Andy acquired a popular new action figure called Buzz Lightyear. The movie named for that Space Ranger, Lightyear, extends the Toy Story franchise by showing us the sci-fi adventure that hooked Andy on the character and inspired the merch. This is a funny spinoff with suspense and heart, a captivatingly spirited toon take on splashy live-action retro popcorn entertainment. The title character is given splendid voice by Chris Evans, balancing heroism and human fallibility with infectious warmth.

My one major gripe is that this movie has left me low-key obsessed with wanting an emotional support cat robot like Sox, the feline automaton companion assigned to Buzz by Star Command to ease his troubled mind after a series of setbacks.

‘Lightyear’: Chris Evans Couldn’t Help but Do a ‘Shameless Tim Allen Impression’ for ‘Toy Story’ Prequel
Image
Chris Evans didn’t have to look to another galaxy for his take on “Toy Story” legend Buzz Lightyear.

The “Captain America” star couldn’t help but harness the iconic Buzz Lightyear voice originated by Tim Allen in the animated franchise spanning back to 1995 when portraying the “real” astronaut Buzz in “Lightyear,” out June 17.

“It’s tough,” Evans admitted to Variety on the red carpet for the film’s premiere. “The first time you have to do that iconic line, ‘To infinity and beyond,’ you just kind of do a shameless Tim Allen impression, because it’s intimidating.”

Space Ranger Buzz (Evans) sets out to save his fellow astronauts after being marooned on another planet for decades. Directed by Angus MacLane (“Finding Dory”), “Lightyear” also stars Uzo Aduba, Peter Sohn, Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

‘Lightyear’ Star Chris Evans on the ‘Intimidating’ Task of Voicing Buzz After Tim Allen
Image
Disney-Pixar’s “Lightyear” sees Chris Evans voicing a new version of one of the company’s most famous characters, Buzz Lightyear. First introduced in 1995’s “Toy Story,” Buzz was made famous thanks to Tim Allen’s voice performance across the franchise’s four films, and Evans admitted that taking on the title role was a daunting prospect

“The first time you have to do that iconic line, ‘To Infinity and Beyond…,’ you kind of just do a shameless Tim Allen impression. It’s intimidating,” Evans told Variety senior entertainment reporter Angelique Jackson at the “Lightyear” premiere. “But Angus [MacLane, the film’s director] and everyone at Pixar was so collaborative, and you kind of let them guide you. Eventually you feel comfortable enough to make your own tracks in the snow and find your own interpretation, while still using Tim Allen as the blueprint.”

Evans was joined at the “Lightyear” premiere by his co-stars Keke Palmer,...

‘Lightyear’ Trailer Reveals Emperor Zurg, Time Travel and Buzz’s Final Words (Video)
Chris Evans
Chris Evans is once again a man out of his time. Only this time, it’s as the legendary space ranger Buzz Lightyear.

In the newest trailer for Disney and Pixar’s upcoming film, we get a little bit deeper into what the story of “Lightyear” will be. Buzz partners with a woman named Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), and they banter like siblings. They even share Buzz’s iconic catchphrase as a call and response: “To infinity, and beyond.”

It seems she runs the show, and he’s off on a new mission.

“I’m gonna grant you four minutes to be off planet, but then you come right back to us,” she cautions.

But, as it turns out, Buzz’s mission actually sends him 62 years, seven months, and five days into the future. When he returns, he meets Hawthorne’s granddaughter, voiced by Keke Palmer, and his new team...

‘Lightyear:’ Pixar Debuts New Trailer; Taika Waititi and Keke Palmer Join Voice Cast
Chris Evans in Lightyear (2022)
To infinity … and beyond.

“Lightyear,” Pixar’s forthcoming animated feature, has just unveiled a new trailer, along with information about additional cast members and who is composing the film’s score.

The new trailer shows more of the world of “Lightyear,” again complemented by an ethereal version of David Bowie’s “Starman,” full of giant robots (Zurg!?!), treacherous tentacles, and an adorable, only slightly unsettling robot cat named Sox (voiced by Pixar filmmaker Peter Sohn). This looks like a big, sci-fi epic, with all the bells and whistles.

“My ‘Lighytear’ pitch was, ‘What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?’ I wanted to see that movie,” director Angus MacLane said in an official statement. “And now I’m lucky enough to get to make it.” (Hopefully that clears up what “Lightyear” is after the confusion the film’s first trailer caused.)

Additionally, Keke Palmer,...

‘Lightyear’ New Trailer: Chris Evans’ Buzz Lightyear Battles Alien Robots in Pixar Hero Origin Story
Image
Beyond infinity lies the story of the real Buzz Lightyear: the hero who inspired the “Toy Story” toy.

Meet Space Ranger Buzz (Chris Evans), who sets out to save his fellow astronauts after a year of being “marooned” on an intergalactic planet.

“A year of work for a four-minute flight,” Buzz explains in the latest trailer for Disney-Pixar film, “Lightyear.” “Isn’t that something?”

With David Bowie’s “Starman” setting the “Guardians of the Galaxy” meets “Toy Story” tone, “Lightyear” skyrockets into adventure, reminding viewers that every hero has to start somewhere. Add in a cute robo-cat named Sox, voiced by Peter Sohn, and Buzz is one-half of a buddy adventure saga of epic proportions. Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, and Taika Waititi voice a group of astronaut recruits, while Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. round out the ensemble cast.

Chris Evans will be voicing the real Buzz Lightyear, the astronaut within the Toy Story universe who inspired the action figure. The plot involves Buzz being marooned in an alien planet and having to figure out a way to build a spaceship and get home. But that only seems like the beginning of this story! Joining the previously announced Chris Evans, who is voicing Buzz, are Keke Palmer, Dale Soules, and Taika Waititi as a group of ambitious recruits. Peter Sohn voices Buzz's robot companion, Sox the cat, and the cast also includes the voices of Uzo Aduba,...

G.I. Joe Lady Jaye Series to Expand Hasbro Universe on Amazon
Image
G.I. Joe has been enduring a period of relative mainstream dormancy since the release of 2013 movie G.I. Joe: Retaliation. However, Hasbro’s popular toy property—specifically, the Cobra-combating “A Real American Hero” iteration launched in the early 1980s—has serious comeback plans that have just expanded, thanks to a live action television series set for Amazon focused on Lady Jaye.

While the pandemic derailed the intended 2020 release of reboot prequel Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, which is scheduled to hit theaters this October, that film now stands to be complemented by the untitled Lady Jaye live-action series, which Deadline reports that Paramount Television Studios, eOne and Skydance Television are developing for streamer Amazon Prime Video. While details are lacking regarding the plot, the project is being described as a standalone story that connects to the larger G.I. Joe Universe. Indeed, Lady Jaye is clearly part of a major multimedia endeavor for Hasbro,...

Dialect Coaches Are Key to Finding Character: ‘It All Starts With the Voice’
Bradley Cooper
When audiences think about actorly transformations, their first thoughts are often of weight lost or gained, hair grown or sheared, and mannerisms shed or adopted. But even if their silhouette doesn’t quite match a level of physical deterioration commensurate with their character’s malady, or their demeanor isn’t quite befitting of, say, an 18th century courtesan, an actor’s voice can be tremendously persuasive in convincing viewers that they are believably inhabiting a specific time or place.

“It all starts with the voice,” says Bradley Cooper, whose gruff delivery as Jackson Maine in “A Star Is Born” has earned him multiple lead actor nominations from critics groups across the globe. “That’s your way in because you can hear yourself as you’re talking, and it’s the best way to believe an imaginary circumstance.”

Actors often prepare exhaustively to learn and approximate the speaking rhythms of a specific time period,...

Being Human’s Dichen Lachman Talks About Her New Role
Hopefully you’ve had a chance to catch last week’s episode of Syfy’s Being Human, the first episode featuring Suren, vampire queen Mother’s vampire daughter, played by Dichen Lachman. She brings an otherworldly vibe to the part and to the show. She took time out of her schedule last week to answer some questions from the press.

SciFi Mafia: Thanks so much for being on the call. I was a big fan of Dollhouse. I’m so sorry it ended so soon.

Dichen Lachman: Oh yes, but then I can’t do Being Human.

SciFi Mafia: Exactly, so we’re happy about that. I’ve seen your first episode of Being Human and to have you in the part, it seems like it’s tailor made for you. Do you know if they made any changes to the character once you were cast?

Dichen Lachman: I don’t know.

Interview: ‘Being Human’ Star Dichen Lachman Talks About Being Vampire
She’ll seduce you with her eyes and enchant you with her smile but don’t let that fool you because Suren is a deadly vampire on Syfy’s Being Human and is responsible for a bloody massacre 80 years ago. Dichen Lachman (Dollhouse) plays Suren and has been a recent mainstay of science fiction television and playing a complex vampire fulfills one of her most coveted roles as an actor. I recently spoke with Lachman on a conference call with other journalists to talk about her character and experience of joining the Being Human cast.

Lachman describes Suren as “incredibly complex,” and “very damaged and reckless in many ways.” That spells out trouble for Aidan (Sam Witwer), a vampire who is doing his best to kick the vampire lifestyle, who has his own bloody trail of murder that’s followed him to the present day. He makes a deal with Mother,...

SAG Moves towards Joint Bargaining with AFTRA
The SAG National Board yesterday passed a resolution, by a surprising 82% to 18% vote, directing the guild’s president and National Executive Director to “seek engagement with AFTRA in a joint bargaining agreement for negotiation of the Television/Theatrical Contract,” as quoted in a SAG press release. This move is as I predicted in a blog post three weeks ago, based on conversations then with a confidential source.

Those negotiations, scheduled for October 1 – November 15 of this year, would take place “under the terms of Phase One, modeled on the agreement used successfully in the 2009 Commercials Contract negotiations,” per the resolution. Phase One is the 1981 agreement between the two unions under which they have jointly bargained with the studios for almost three decades, with the notable exception of 2007-2009.

The margin was unexpected, since the board is almost evenly divided between factions that support joint bargaining (Unite for Strength and an independent in Los Angeles,...

SAG Moderates Win Presidency, Secr. + Additional 4 Natl Seats
In a victory for the SAG moderate coalition (Unite for Strength / Usan / independents), the Ufs candidates for president, Ken Howard, and secretary, Amy Aquino, won the union's national offices.

However, the election was close: Howard's total was slightly less than the two hardline candidates added together (Anne-Marie Johnson and Seymour Cassel) and Aquino's was slightly more than that of incumbent Connie Stevens. So the union is still very divided, and Howard acknowledged that the results were not a landslide and that the union is very divided, while saying that he planned to reach out to Mf supporters.

On the national board, the moderates showed strength as well: They picked up 4 of 11 seats in Hollywood and held all of the NY and regional (Rbd) seats. I estimate that this brings the moderate's board majority to around 60%, vs. 40% for Mf, but that's a very rough calculation and I'm not sure at this point.

SAG elects Ken Howard president
There are surely more conflicts to come, but the Screen Actors Guild membership on Thursday night settled a big one: Ken Howard has been elected the union's new national president.

Running mate Amy Aquino beat two-time incumbent Connie Stevens in the race for secretary-treasurer. Howard and Aquino will serve two-year terms beginning Friday.

For the moment, at least, the outcomes indicate that a winning 47.2% of the voting segment of SAG's roughly 120,000 members prefers the less strident approach of the self-styled moderate wing of the party represented by Unite for Strength.

Howard collected 12,895 votes, or 3,989 more than MembershipFirst candidate Anne-Marie Johnson, who received 32.6% of the 27,295 votes cast. Independents Seymour Cassel and Asmar Muhammad garnered 17.7% and 1.5%, respectively, in their bid for the presidency.

Ufs came together last year in opposition and in January led a boardroom coup at SAG, installed new negotiators and salvaged a deal with Hollywood producers nearly a...

SAG National Executive Director Firing – How it Went Down
The SAG board’s moderate majority fired National Executive Director Doug Allen today by using a document signed by board members and called a “written assent.” Much to my surprise, Allen chose not to fight and instead emailed the SAG staff acknowledging that he had been terminated and saying goodbye. A copy of the email is below.

Perhaps one reason Allen agreed so readily is that—as has not previously been reported—the assent provides that his contract will be paid out in full. The assent itself has not previously been released. However, I’ve received a copy. See below.

A natural question is how the process unfolded. I spoke to two sources close to the situation who laid out the following narrative:

At around 11:00 a.m. Monday morning, a group of board members went to SAG’s La headquarters. The group included Unite for Strength leader Ned Vaughn,...
