Voight recalls how Hoffman's iconic "I'm walkin' here!" scene in Midnight Cowboy was improvised with real NYC cab interaction. Hoffman's line ranks on AFI's list of top quotes, sparking debate on whether it was scripted or improvised during filming. Regardless of its origin, the scene showcases Hoffman's authentic performance, contributing to the film's iconic status in cinema history.

Jon Voight shares his story of Dustin Hoffman's iconic "I'm walkin' here!" scene in Midnight Cowboy. Released in 1969, the film follows the unlikely friendship between two hustlers in New York City, one a naive male prostitute from Texas named Joe Buck and the other an ailing con man referred to as Ratso. Mark Goddard Dies: ‘Lost In Space’ Actor Was 87
Image
Mark Goddard, the actor who made a lasting impression on young sci-fi fans as the daring, forever impatient Major Don West on CBS’ 1965-68 series Lost In Space, died of pulmonary fibrosis Tuesday in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was 87.

His death was announced by his wife Evelyn Pezzulich in a Facebook post.

“I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th,” Pezzulich wrote. “Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure.”

By the time he was cast in his breakthrough role as the headstrong Major West, Goddard had built a reputation as a rising young actor through supporting appearances in late-’50s fare such as Johnny Ringo and The Rebel.

The Daily Stream: The Manchurian Candidate Shows How Brainwashing Can Destabilize A Democracy
Image
(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)

The Movie: "The Manchurian Candidate"

Where You Can Stream It: The Roku Channel

The Pitch: "Raymond Shaw is the bravest, kindest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life."

The recent death of Angela Lansbury and the 60th anniversary of "The Manchurian Candidate" this week have put the film back on the radar just in time for the U.S. midterm elections in early November. When "The Manchurian Candidate" first hit theaters in 1962, it was not far removed from the Second Red Scare, and the Cold War was still in full swing. The movie spoke to mid-20th-century fears like the specter of McCarthyism yet it was also remarkably prescient about the future of politics.

In "The Manchurian Candidate,...

The Glass Bottom Boat
It’s wacky, daffy and incredibly square, yet Frank Tashlin’s late career Doris Day romp has a certain gotta-watch interest factor: the male cast of clowns performs the sexist comedy well, and Ms. Day’s fantastic screen personality brightens everything. Space-age executive lothario Rod Taylor hires Doris just for romantic purposes, while Arthur Godfrey, John McGiver, Dom DeLuise, Edward Andrews, Paul Lynde and Dick Martin execute dated slapstick amid ‘futuristic’ gadgets from the days of Buck Rogers.

Midnight Cowboy
Pictures like Midnight Cowboy pulled everyone my age group into the movies, while the entire older generation likely stopped going to movies altogether. John Schlesinger’s masterpiece can boast a number of firsts, and deserves the high praise it receives from every angle — this was the epitome of progressive filmmaking circa 1969.

‘Midnight Cowboy’ Blu-ray Review (Criterion)
Stars: Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, Sylvia Miles, John McGiver, Georgann Johnson | Written by Waldo Salt | Directed by John Schlesinger

“Where’s that Joe Buck?” the Texan locals ask. Here he is: it’s Jon Voight, a New Yorker playing a Deep Southern wannabe gigolo in flamboyant cowboy getup. Voight looks as pretty as his daughter playing the doe-eyed Joe, who ditches his grimy cafe job and sets off for the Big Apple to make a living sleeping with wealthy older women, while Fred Neil’s insufferably catchy “Everybody’s Talkin’” hums on the soundtrack.

Joe is confident and fearless, simple and childlike, but NYC isn’t all he hoped. Nothing of what he hoped. He’s a fish out of water. Shot from low angles, Manhattan appears more vertical and dwarfing than ever (Joe was the tallest structure back in Texas). This is Manhattan from a much scuzzier era: all neon vice and deviancy,...

The Glass Bottom Boat
Screwball director Frank Tashlin jumps feet first into the chaste world of Doris Day comedies and emerges with his gonzo cred intact. The 1966 film, co-starring Rod Taylor, features sufficient Tashlin-inspired sight gags and winsome Day crooning to keep fans of both artists satisfied. Featuring a supporting cast of able TV vets including Paul Lynde and John McGiver, the movie lit up the box office leading to another Tashlin-Day collaboration in 1967’s Caprice (with diminishing returns).

Review: "Who's Minding The Store?" (1963) Starring Jerry Lewis; Olive Films Blu-ray Release
By Lee Pfeiffer

Olive Films has released the 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy "Who's Minding the Store?" on Blu-ray. The film was made at the peak of Lewis's solo career following the breakup of Martin and Lewis some years before. The movie was directed by Frank Tashlin, who collaborated with Lewis on his best productions. It can be argued that, with the exception of Lewis's inspired "The Nutty Professor" (released the same year as "Store"), his work never reached the heights that he achieved by working with Tashlin, a talented director and screenwriter who never quite got the acclaim he deserved. "Store" is one of Lewis's best movies because it's also one of his funniest. He plays Norman Phiffier, a nerdy manchild who fails at even the most elementary of careers. When we meet him he's trying to make ends meet by running his own dog-walking service, which provides some amusing sight...

Empire Dreams and the New York City of "Midnight Cowboy"
Initially a bustling urban backdrop for this new and correspondingly modern medium known as cinema, New York City has been a focal point of American movies since the inception of the form itself. Movies were made to move, and no place moved like NYC. At first, it was the city alone that dazzled filmgoers: the sheer scope and scale of Manhattan’s topography, the size of the city’s towering skyscrapers, the clustered ebb and flow of its lively population. Then stories emerged out of this concrete jungle, stories born from the teeming metropolitan setting: immigrant tragedies, gangster tales, social dramas of class inequality and economic expansion. Before long, Hollywood coopted New York, and suddenly, the bi-coastal portrayal of the Big Apple featured posh penthouses, swanky nightclubs, and a decidedly one-sided representation of the haves and have-nots (Hollywood liked the haves). As an alternative, independent filmmakers took the city’s...

Produced and Directed by Billy Wilder

A favorite of Billy Wilder-philes, Love in the Afternoon is a strong expression of the ‘romantic-Lubitsch’ vein in Wilder’s work. It’s essentially a return to the early ’30s Lubitsch comedies with Maurice Chevalier, but played in a more bittersweet Viennese register. It’s also Wilder’s first collaboration with the comedy screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond. Together they fashion the predominantly verbal comedy machine that will carry them through three or four big hits, and a few losers that have become classics anyway.

The Manchurian Candidate
It's the classic paranoid conspiracy that won't go away... and that seems less impossible with every passing year. Laurence Harvey is a remote-controlled assassin, and Frank Sinatra seems to be under a little hypnotic influence himself... or are we just imagining it? Go Lightly to Breakfast At Tiffany’S Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli
It’s a bit disheartening looking at the cast of Breakfast At Tiffany’S and realizing that of its main stars, only Mickey Rooney is still alive. Audrey Hepburn, George Peppard, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, John McGiver, Alan Reed Jr., Stanley Adams, and Dorothy Whitney are all gone, as well as director Blake Edwards, screenwriter George Axelrod, and no doubt the cats who played “Cat”.

Based on the novel by Truman Capote (also deceased), Breakfast At Tiffany’S tells the story of Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) a well-scrubbed bohemian girl who lives how she wants to live – she has all-night parties, the world’s longest cigarette holder, and owns a cat with no name. She meets her new neighbor Paul(George Peppard) in the apartment building she lives in and the two become friends and later in the film find themselves falling in love.

Though I’ve never seen it,...

5 June DVD Titles You Should Know About Including 'The 39 Steps,' The Films Of Lina Wertmüller & More
Well, the dog days of summer are fast approaching, and what better way to duck out of the heat than by spending a cool day inside, AC-blasting, with your Blu-ray player and an endless supply of chilled adult beverages. June sees the release of an Alfred Hitchcock classic (beautifully restored), a trio of Lina Wertmüller gems, a nearly lost Michael Curtiz effort, a movie about the sex lives of ghosts, and a plane crash survival tale sold on the, er, ample merits of its female lead.

“The 39 Steps” (Alfred Hitchcock, 1935)

Why You Should Care: Because “The 39 Steps,” a crackling (86 minutes!) spy thriller from Alfred Hitchcock, is one of the most beloved British movies of all time, coming in at fourth place in the British Film Institute’s poll of top British films, and more recently, named the 21st greatest British film of all time by movie magazine Total Film. The film,...

The exquisite Audrey Hepburn stars as the free-spirited Holly Golightly in the unforgettable masterpiece Breakfast at Tiffany's, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and debuting on Blu-ray September 20, 2011 from Paramount Home Entertainment. Based on Truman Capote's best-selling novella, Breakfast at Tiffany's captured the imagination of audiences everywhere and made an indelible impact on movies, fashion and society at large. In director Blake Edwards' timeless classic, Hepburn's intoxicating New York party girl embarks on a wildly entertaining, comedic adventure to find love in the big city.
