Daisy Haggard Gives ‘Back to Life’ Character a Bit More ‘Bite’ in Season 2
Image
Second seasons of television shows are often referred to as sophomore seasons, which is especially fitting for “Back to Life” because showrunner and star Daisy Haggard considers her central character to be like a teenager in the new, six-episode journey.

“Back to Life” began with Haggard’s Miri getting out of prison after serving 18 years for killing one of her best friends, Lara Boback (Imogen Gurney). She moves back to her hometown of Hythe — and more specifically, she moves back to her parents’ house — to try to start her life. The small town around her hasn’t forgiven her for what she did, even though it was an accident, but Miri is determined to “find her feet,” as Haggard puts it.

“Miri needs to be an optimist. She needs that kind of, ‘You knock me down, I get back up again’ [attitude] and we layered that in. Then it started to...

Peaky Blinders series 4 episode 4 review

This review contains spoilers.

Is Polly really plotting against Tommy, or are they working together against the Italians? Craftily, episode four kept both possibilities open while delivering two thrilling action sequences, keeping roughly half a dozen other plot threads spinning, welcoming back a few old faces, pointing in some new directions, and ending on a cliff-hanger that saw Tommy driving off to—perhaps—certain doom. All that in a single hour of storytelling. This show doesn’t half give us our money’s worth.

Polly drawing a black star in Tommy’s diary is our best evidence that she’s working with rather than against him. Tommy knows the significance of a black star,...

Father Brown Season Two
Father Brown Season 2

Daytime drama Father Brown was one of the surprise British TV hits of 2013. Mark Williams starred as the crime busting Catholic cleric who spent his free-time unraveling baffling mysteries in Miss Marple era Britain. A second 10-part season of the show premieres on 6 January on BBC1. Father Brown will remain in its mid-afternoon time slot despite the clamor from some fans to move it to a more traditional early evening drama slot.

In the first installment of the new season, Father Brown is asked to perform an exorcism at the home of Charlotte McKinley (Lizzy McInnerny). She believes she’s being haunted by her long-dead sister. Brown suspects that the sister is alive and well. Either way, he sets out to solve the mystery of the strange-goings on at Cudely Manor.
