Magnetosphere Review: Painting with Sound and Seeing with Heart
Image
The coming-of-age story is a constant in global cinema, a narrative form revisited by every generation and culture. In a quiet corner of 1997 Ontario, writer-director Nicola Rose’s Magnetosphere finds a new key in which to play this familiar tune.

We meet thirteen-year-old Maggie at a moment of deep upheaval; her family has moved, thrusting her into the terrifying landscape of a new school. She faces the standard anxieties of adolescence—the desperate need for friendship, the sting of insecurity.

Yet Maggie’s world is uniquely her own. She lives with synesthesia, a condition that creates a private orchestra of color and sound only she can perceive. Emotions have hues and noises create visual patterns. Fearing this makes her irreparably “weird,” she keeps her sensory reality a secret, navigating the already treacherous waters of youth while guarding a profound part of her identity.

The Architecture of a Neurodivergent Mind

Official Trailer for 'Magnetosphere' Film About a Girl with Synesthesia
Image
"Don't be in a hurry to grow up – it's overrated." Freestyle Digital Media has revealed an official trailer for the film Magnetosphere, an indie coming-of-age comedy by filmmaker Nicola Rose. It initially premiered at the 2024 Hamilton Film Festival and Dances With Films Festival last year, and is ready for release on VOD later this month. For anyone who wants to watch! It's 1997. Comet Hale-Bopp streaks across the sky, and 13-year-old Maggie Campion is trying to make sense of a world she literally sees differently — because Maggie has synesthesia, a rare condition where senses intertwine. As she navigates a new school, quirky family drama, first love, and a chaotic theater production, Maggie begins to realize her so-called "weirdness" might just be her greatest gift. Synesthesia is a condition that makes her see sounds, hear colors, and more. Starring Shayelin Martin as Maggie, Steven He, Colin Mochrie, Tara Strong, Patrick McKenna, Tania Webb,...

Will There Be An L.A.'s Finest Season 3?
Image
Debuting as the first Spectrum original series, L.A.'s Finest brought a healthy mix of humor and excitement to the police procedural genre, but will there be a season 3? The show centered on LAPD detectives Syd Burnett (Gabrielle Union) and Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba) as they tried to balance their jobs on the mean streets of L.A. with their complicated home lives. Despite not being supported by a major network, L.A.'s Finest had an all-star cast that turned the typical procedural format on its ear with plots that were character-driven. The humor made the show unique, and it truly began to build during its second season on the air.

Designed as a spinoff of hit Bad Boys action movie franchise, L.A.'s Finest struggled somewhat under its own identity as a spinoff but began finding its footing during season 2. Aside from the typical cop show moments that almost all procedurals included,...

Casey Anthony is telling her side of the story for the first time. In the documentary "Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies," which premieres on Peacock on Nov. 29, Anthony revisits the infamous case surrounding the death of her daughter Caylee and reveals new details about what she alleges happened.

She was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder, though she was eventually found not guilty on that charge.

Now, a decade after the case became a media frenzy, Anthony revisits what happened in the three-part documentary. Ahead, check out some of the biggest revelations.

1. Anthony says the "Bella Vita" tattoo was part of her subconscious rebellion against her family.

One of the aspects of Anthony's case that...

‘Sesame Street’ Parent Bets on ‘Esme & Roy’ to Open New Production Avenues
Leslie Carrara-Rudolph, David Rudman, Matt Vogel, and Ryan Dillon in Sesame Street (1969)
The company behind “Sesame Street” is willing to risk a few temper tantrums in its pursuit to expand.

Sesame Workshop is readying the launch of “Esme & Roy,” an animated series that will run on HBO and expand a partnership that has been in place since the At&T pay-cable service agreed to run the company’s flagship “Sesame Street” in 2015. The show centers on two “monster babysitters” – a young girl and her shaggier, yellow, horned counterpart – who help their young charges avert “monster meltdowns” while getting them to play games and take part in scheduled activities.

The series, which debuts 9:30 a.m. eastern August 18 on HBO, also serves to send a new signal that Sesame Workshop wants to broaden beyond Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch in the not-too-distant future.

“We are always going to be very boutique-y and selective, with a focus on quality as opposed to quantity,” says Steve Youngwood,...

‘L.A.’s Finest’: Charter Communications Gives Series Order To ‘Bad Boys’ Offshoot
Will Smith, Téa Leoni, and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys (1995)
It’s official: Charter Communications has given a 13-episode straight-to-series order to La’s Finest, the drama pilot starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba from writers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, Sony Pictures TV, Jerry Bruckheimer Television and 2.0 Entertainment. It is set to premiere in 2019 exclusively on Charter’s Spectrum as the platform’s first major original series.

Former CSI: NY showrunner Pam Veasey has come on board as executive producer/co-showrunner of the series alongside Margolis and Sonnier.

Sony TV took out the action pilot, a spinoff from the Bad Boys movie franchise, immediately after the project’s original network, NBC, surprisingly passed on it. Charter Communications quickly emerged as a likely potential home, starting talks with Sony TV just days later. With the deal in advanced stages, Sony TV has been selling La’s Finest internationally.

Why Casey Anthony Spent Only Two Weeks in Prison After Getting a Four-Year Sentence
Many people were shocked in 2011 when a Florida jury acquitted Casey Anthony of murder in the 2008 death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony was, however, found guilty of four misdemeanor counts of lying to police, and Judge Belvin Perry Jr. sentenced her to four years in prison, one year for each count. And because he ordered the four years would be served consecutively, Judge Perry imposed the maximum jail time he possibly could. His ruling surprised legal expert Jeffrey Toobin, who observed, "Most people convicted of misdemeanors do not get prison time." But because Anthony had already served approximately three years in prison — and because she had exhibited good behavior — she only owed 10 more days in prison at the time of her sentencing. "I don't know how free she's going to be (but) she's going to be out a cage," defense attorney Cheney Mason said after Anthony's sentencing, per CNN.

However, unlike most recaps of the crime, investigators in the special believe that Casey could have actually been innocent. Whether she's guilty or not, Casey has tried to move past the headlines and start a new life, which has left people wondering: does Casey have another child, and what is she up to today? Casey hasn't had any more kids, though she hasn't ever given a definitive answer as to whether or not she would want to be a mom again. "If I am blessed enough to have another child — if I'd be dumb enough to bring another kid into...

Casey Anthony Entered a Hot Body Contest Four Days After Her Daughter's Disappearance and We're Still Not Over It
Of all the damning things that Casey Anthony did following her daughter Caylee Anthony's disappearance, entering a hot body contest is by far one of the most puzzling. If anything, it's because it extends so far outside the scope of what one would expect from a grieving mother. Then again, Casey Anthony hardly ever behaved within the confines of conventionally expressed grief. To be frank, she often looked happy during her trial, where she faced the death penalty for first-degree murder. Was that all an act to placate jurors into thinking she was in shock or mentally unstable? Or was the Casey Anthony we saw take the stand in 2011, truly who she is: an apathetic, selfish woman with little regard for the law, let alone the death of her two-year-old daughter? According to those who knew her well, the latter holds true — making the hot body contest, and the photos that came with it,...

In the years since Casey Anthony was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, she kept a low profile. She was seldom seen in public, and she never gave a media interview.
