Toronto — Social-media phenomenon Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor has signed on to portray U.S. sprint icon Carl Lewis in “Hate the Player: The Ben Johnson Story,” a six-episode satirical miniseries now filming in Toronto for GameTV and Paramount+ Canada. Created by BAFTA-winner Anthony Q. Farrell and produced by New Metric Media with Bay Mills Studios, the project revisits the infamous 1988 Olympic doping scandal through the eyes of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, played by Shamier Anderson.

Producers say principal photography began on 20 June and the series is set to premiere in early 2026, marking one of the first collaborations in which a domestic streamer and a linear network will share a simultaneous launch window. There are several remakes of The Office, including versions that recreate standout scenes from the original. There has also been the recent Australian take on The Office for Prime Video, which went in a different direction by casting a female character in the bumbling Michael Scott role. Acclaimed Academy and Emmy award-winning documentarian Morgan Neville is honoring the 50th anniversary of “Saturday Night Live” with docuseries “SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night,” which he executive produces. The four-part series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the history of the beloved sketch series, with each episode taking a different perspective on how the show began.

So technically, there’s nothing that really captures everything that The Office was. There’s a reason why the UK version was adapted into the U.S. version and that there’s now an Australian version out there. That being said, there are some great comedies that gets to the heart of it.

The Office was more than just a workplace comedy. It brought us relationship dynamics that shouldn’t have worked, and we got to see character growth we didn’t initially think was possible. It was funny and heartfelt at the same time.

Norm Macdonald isn’t primarily known for his celebrity impressions, but during his time on Saturday Night Live, he imitated Bob Dole and Burt Reynolds as well as also managed to gift/curse us all with this scarily accurate take on Quentin Tarantino.

But the best Macdonald impression, many would argue, is his David Letterman.

Impressions of Letterman weren’t totally new to SNL. Back in 1983, Joe Piscopo played the host while he was still part of the NBC family. Piscopo’s Letterman was serviceable, but ultimately, uninspired.

Macdonald, on the other hand, was somehow able to tap into the core of Letterman’s comic persona, only slightly amplifying his mannerisms, and ultimately turning the Late Show star into a frenzied sketch comedy character without all that much exaggeration. The internet is full of not-so-flattering stories about Lorne Michaels, but we’d like to share an objectively nice story about the long-time Saturday Night Live producer for a change.

Obviously, Michaels has produced a lot more than just SNL, his many credits include TV shows like Portlandia, Los Espookys and Up All Night, as well as movies like Baby Mama, Lassie, and — wait, Lorne Michaels produced the Lassie movie? He also refuses to reveal why he made a Lassie movie exactly. That’s weird.

But one of the most significant non-canine-based titles on Michaels’ resume, at least for comedy fans, is The Kids in the Hall. Famously, Michaels produced the beloved series after “discovering” (but not really) the Canadian troupe in the 1980s. Unfortunately, doing sketch comedy for Canada’s public broadcaster wasn’t exactly the most lucrative gig.

David Handelman, a print journalist turned TV writer who worked on the Aaron Sorkin series Sports Night, The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Newsroom, has died. He was 63.

Handelman died Aug. 15 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York from complications of Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia, a rare blood cancer, producer David Van Taylor told The Hollywood Reporter.

Short for situation comedy, sitcoms generally feature characters who appear from episode to episode and find them in everyday situations that often turn comedic. Many sitcoms have been filmed in front of a live studio audience or at least used a laugh track.

With the rise of streaming, the golden age of sitcoms may be behind audiences, but that does not mean that there have not been some great sitcoms over the years. Some actors' departures are significant to the overall story, leaving a void that is difficult to fill, while others create opportunities for new characters to shine. The cast of Superstore recently had a reunion dinner in Los Angeles, although America Ferrera was missing. After the show ended in 2021, there were reports of a spinoff focused on Bo and Cheyenne, but NBC decided not to move forward with the project. While there is no active movement on reviving Superstore, the reunion sparks hope for a future revival.

The cast of Superstore has an appropriately super-sized reunion, though one actor is missing. Debuting in 2015 and following a group of employees who work at a fictional big-box store in Missouri, the comedy ran for six seasons on NBC and a total of 113 episodes. Keith Johnstone, a pioneer in improvisation who trained a generation of actors and comedians in impromptu performance and creativity, on and off the stage, has died. He was 90.

Johnstone died at Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on Saturday, according to his personal website, with no cause of death specified. The creator of Theatresports and co-founder of The Loose Moose Theatre Company was born in Devon, England, on Feb. 21, 1933.

Johnstone trained at the Royal Court Theatre in London and was a teacher at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. According to Theresa Robbins Dudeck, co-director of the docu-series On Keith: Artists Speak on Johnstone and Impro, Johnstone developed his Impro System, or his improvisation theories, while at the Royal Court Theatre over 10 years to 1966. He eventually became associate director and head of the Rct Studio for professional actors.

2022 has been an extraordinary year for television. The pandemic forced many shows down to shorter schedules or Zoom-based episodes in 2020, which had lasting effects well into 2021, but this year feels almost like a roaring television comeback. There were so many great shows this year that I genuinely had a difficult time narrowing the list down to just 20 entries. We have been blessed with a wealth of excellent entertainment from regular networks, cable, and streaming, and now it's time to celebrate (and rank) the best of the best.

This has been an especially great year for genre TV, with an abundance of extraordinary new science fiction, fantasy, and horror shows, plus terrific new seasons from returning favorites like "What We Do in the Shadows" and "The Boys." There were so many good shows that I had to leave out some greats, like "Star Trek: Lower Decks," "Mythic Quest," and "The White Lotus.

The Pitch: The elevator pitch for NBC's sitcom "Superstore" is simple: at a Walmart-like big box store in Missouri, a group of employees work, squabble, dream, goof off, fall in love, and fight for their rights. But across its six seasons, the series made by Justin Spitzer never stopped getting funnier, or more romantic, or bolder in its portrayal of the class struggle in America. By the time it bowed out gracefully last year, "Superstore" had become one of the best workplace sitcoms of the 21st century so far, despite never entering the zeitgeist as fully as comparable favorites like "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation."
