Miles Davis’ Cryptic Advice That Changed John McLaughlin’s Career & Future of Jazz
Image
John McLaughlin is one of the most GOATed guitarists in the entire music industry, and it feels like Miles Davis’ cryptic advice has helped him climb so high up. After all, he did feature on a number of the late legendary jazz trumpeter’s most celebrated albums, including the likes of 1972’s On the Corner and 1970’s Bitches Brew.

Back when he was only starting as a guitarist in New York at 27, McLaughlin was called by his longtime icon, Davis, to their studio. But instead of a guitar score, he was given a piano score by Joe Zawinul since they already had a guitar player on the session. Either way, they started recording the title track of A Silent Way – but something just didn’t fit right.

Image
American Manhunt: Osama bin Laden tells us that having the power to shape narratives and influence preferences is the key factor to becoming a superpower. The fact that the US forces were able to eliminate Osama bin Laden not only served as proof of their military prowess but also gave us an idea about the nation’s soft power. It showed how the US crossed several roadblocks and made sure that nobody questioned its authority or its way of doing things. So, let’s go through the events that led to the death of Osama bin Laden and find out how US intelligence agencies were able to pull it off.

What happened after 9/11?

On 11 September 2001, a dastardly act by an infamous terrorist organization, Al-Qaeda, shook the foundations of American society. Two planes had been intentionally crashed into the World Trade Center, and a plane had even targeted the Pentagon. From John McLaughlin,...

Trump Calls For ‘Fraud’ Investigation Of Pollsters Following Spate Of Low Approval Ratings
Image
President Donald Trump wants pollsters to be investigated for fraud after reacting to his low approval ratings.

In one post, Trump pollster John McLaughlin noted that 37% of the New York Times survey respondents and 34% of the ABC poll respondents voted for Trump in 2024.

“Didn’t we win popular vote with 50%,” McLaughlin asked.

According to a new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll conducted online, only 39% of respondents said that they approve of how Trump handles his job, the lowest approval rating of any president in the past 80 years. This had been Trump’s lowest approval rating since March 2017, during his first term as president, when his approval rating was just 37%.

Trump reacted to these results in a post he shared on Truth Social.

“Great Pollster John McLaughlin, one of the most highly respected in the industry, has just stated that The Failing New York Times Poll, and the ABC/Washington Post Poll,...

Donald Trump Unloads On New York Times And Other Pollsters Amid Sinking Approval Ratings: “They Are Negative Criminals”
Image
Donald Trump went after pollsters for The New York Times and other media outlets Monday, as the latest numbers show the president with historically low approval ratings at the 100-day mark.

The president wrote on Truth Social, “These people should be investigated for Election Fraud, and add in the FoxNews Pollster while you’re at it. They are Negative Criminals who apologize to their subscribers and readers after I Win Elections Big, much bigger than their polls showed I would win, loose a lot of credibility, and then go on cheating and lying for the next cycle, only worse. They suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome, and there is nothing that anyone, or anything, can do about it.”

Great Pollster John McLaughlin, one of the most highly respected in the industry, has just stated that The Failing New York Times Poll, and the ABC/Washington Post Poll, about a person named Donald J. Trump,...

Over the decades, Carlos Santana has collaborated with jazz legends (Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter), rock guitarists (Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan), blues greats (Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker), R&b singers (Smokey Robinson, Lauryn Hill), and even country artists (Willie Nelson, Faith Hill). The results were sometimes worldwide hits like “Smooth” (with Rob Thomas) or “Maria Maria” (with Wyclef Jean), but others fell between the cracks and never found the audience they deserved.

Gene Simmons on Bass Virtuosos Like Flea: “I Can’t Remember Anything He Plays”
Image
Gene Simmons was recently asked about his musical preferences regarding his instrument of choice, the bass guitar, and the ever-opinionated Kiss co-founder took a crack at jazz bassists and other virtuosos such as Flea to prove his point.

To no surprise, Simmons prefers simplicity — a catchy hook — over technical skill, as reflected in his songwriting in Kiss.

In a new interview with Guitar World, he admitted that he never had interest in being a “bass virtuoso,” adding that he doesn’t like “show-offs in music” and that he’s “much more attracted to things that are memorable.”

Simmons went on to give his narrow-minded hot take on jazz — what he called music “intended to show off how well you play” — and technically gifted guitarists such as John McLaughlin.

“You can be a jazz player and be respected by musicians, but the rest of the world doesn’t care,” Simmons said.

The Futurama Team Had Trouble Finding Morbo's Voice, Until Maurice Lamarche Stepped In
Image
One of the funniest "Futurama" characters is the newscaster Morbo (voiced by Maurice Lamarche). A green-skinned alien with an enlarged head (a design speculated to be based on the invaders from the 1957 B-movie "Invasion of the Saucer Men"), Morbo is implied to be an advance scout for an invasion of Earth — and does a terrible job hiding it.

In almost every scene he's in, he loudly proclaims his hatred for "puny Earthlings" and intent to conquer them: "All humans are vermin in the eyes of Morbo." His co-host, the cheery Linda (Tress MacNeille), always laughs off Morbo's blatant threats and hatred for humanity. The episode "The Prisoners of Benda" best encapsulates their dynamic with a five-second cold open:

Linda: "Tonight at 11"-

Morbo: "Doooom!"

So, Morbo's character is a pretty one-note joke, but it's a very funny joke. Most of this comes down to his booming voice ("Viewers trust a...

Titled ‘This Moment’, the album offers a set of eight new compositions and performances with McLaughlin on guitar and guitar synth and Hussain on tabla joined by vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, percussionist V. Selvaganesh and violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan.

Trump Calls Military ‘Woke’ Hours After Saying Term Is Meaningless
Image
Donald Trump sat down in Iowa with Sean Hannity for a pre-recorded town hall event that aired Thursday night on Fox News. The former president cycled through his usual list of grievances and outlandish claims. He also alleged that the U.S. military wanted to “go woke,” despite admitting earlier on Thursday that he didn’t like the term and that Republicans have no idea what “woke” actually means.

“You know, our military is great. A lot of things going on with our military with the woke and all this nonsense,...

Highlights included a rousing cover of Beck and Depp’s take on “Isolation” by John Lennon — performed by Hammett, Gibbons, and Depp (who released the song as a collaborative single with Beck in 2022); Stewart tearing through a four-song medley with Clapton; and Gibbons and Depp taking on Zz Top’s “Rough Boy,” a song Beck and Gibbons used to play together.

Elsewhere, Clapton performed lengthy sets on both nights, dipping into Beck’s songbook for originals like “Beck’s Bolero,...

I didn't, the drums found me: Ranjit Barot
Image
Adding that one develops a relationship with the drums, and "if you have a good enough connection, they will treat you well, but if not, they may not talk to you", Ranit Barot, one of India’s best-known percussionists says, "When every day I look at my drums before playing them, it encourages me to play more. You believe that each drum has a unique sonic marker that you absorb into your brain, and that you spend your whole life chasing the sound you hear in your mind, which is why you keep playing.

"Overall, it seems like I have a deep respect and reverence for the drums and the art of drumming. Playing the drums is not just about technique, but also about developing a relationship and connection with the instrument. I did not necessarily find the drums, but rather they found me."

Thundercat: Making Jazz Fusion Cool Again
Suicidal Tendencies
First of all, there’s his instrument. It’s ostensibly a bass, but it’s got six strings, and it’s running through a couple different effects that make it sound like a guitar. Also, Thundercat (né Stephen Bruner) is playing it so fast that he makes the thing sound like a Metallica guitar solo, but instead of thrash metal, he and his band are pumping out a strange mix of extremely adept jazz, funk and R&B, all of which anchor his silky falsetto. (And on one of his recent singles, the equally silky voices of Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins.
