Film Review: ‘Anything’
Timothy McNeil
Love, companionship, healing and deliverance often come from unexpected places, but in movies, it’s far too easy for out-of-the-blue twists of fate to feel creakily contrived. That fact is born out by “Anything,” a romance between a recent widower and a transgender woman that, at nearly every turn, operates in schematic fashion. Though the film’s heart is in the right place, writer Timothy McNeil’s directorial debut (an adaptation of his play) hits so many familiar notes that it undercuts its compassionate lead performances, in the process rendering it merely a superficial tale of unlikely amour.

The casting of Matt Bomer as Freda Von Rhenburg, a Hollywood transgender sex worker, was greeted last year with criticism from some online quarters for being insensitive (if not worse). As it turns out, however, the most problematic thing about the character ultimately has far less to do with Bomer’s sincere...

Matt Bomer & John Carroll Lynch in Trans Love Story 'Anything' Trailer
"I don't know a lot of things, but I know what it means to love someone..." Paladin has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Anything, from writer/director Timothy McNeil. Anything is a story about the infinite possibility of love. Matt Bomer plans a transgender woman who meets a middle-aged man who moved to Los Angeles after his wife's death, played by John Carroll Lynch. They strike up a relationship, and together experience the turbulence and challenges that come with falling for each other. The film's cast includes Maura Tierney, Margot Bingham, Michael Boatman, and Tanner Buchanan. This looks like a compelling, modern look at the complexities of romance, putting a trans relationship front and center. It's particularly impressive to see how talented Bomer really is. Take a look and let us know your thoughts. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Timothy McNeil's Anything, direct from...

‘Anything’ Trailer: Matt Bomer Is a Transgender Sex Worker in Controversial Love Story (Exclusive) — Watch
Matt Bomer
When Matt Bomer was announced as the star of Timothy McNeil’s film “Anything” in August of 2016, the choice to cast a cisgender man as a transgender sex worker riled many in the Lgbtq community. Some took to social media to air their disdain, most notably transgender actresses Jamie Clayton, of “Sense8” fame, and Jen Richards, who tweeted that she had actually auditioned for the role, and unspooled a passionate thread as to why it’s important to cast trans actors in trans roles. Trans musician Mya Byrne penned an open letter on HuffPo that pointedly asked, “Why Is Matt Bomer Playing A Trans Woman?”

The outcry was enough to grab the attention of producer Mark Ruffalo, who responded with his own Twitter message, which read in part, “To the Trans community. I hear you. It’s wrenching to you see you in this pain. I am glad we are having this conversation.

Mark Ruffalo After ‘Normal Heart': ‘If A Piano Dropped On Me Tomorrow, I Did Ok”
The Normal Heart (2014)
Exclusive, Updated At 6:06 p.m. with comments about Spotlight at end: You might call August, 2014 a full-circle month for Mark Ruffalo. His performance as Ned Weeks in Ryan Murphy‘s HBO version of The Normal Heart earned one of that film’s astonishing 16 Emmy nominations, with the winners to be announced on Aug. 25. He’s eager to catch the Broadway revival of the 1996 stage play that launched his career, Kenneth Lonergan‘s This Is Our Youth, which begins on the 18th with Michael Cera and Kieran Culkin.

Writing about his work in Lonergan’s You Can Count On Me, the New York Times’ Stephen Holden said, “Mr. Ruffalo’s star-making performance deserves to be added to the list of charismatic, grownup lost boys that includes the Marlon Brando of A Streetcar Named Desire and the Jack Nicholson of Easy Rider.”

Yet this is the same guy who plays the Hulk in the Avengers franchise.
