‘The worst has already happened, so now I have everything to gain’: Meagan Good on love, loss, and empowering women in ‘Forever’
Image
"You just have to open your heart and say, ‘The worst has already happened, so now I have everything to gain.’ Even if I get hurt again, it’ll still be worth it — to live, to experience, to love," says Meagan Good, sharing one of the poignant takeaways she hopes viewers embrace from her Lifetime movie, Terry McMillan Presents: Forever.

In the film, Good portrays Carlie, a resilient police officer, cancer survivor, and single mother of two who finds herself opening up to a second chance at love when she meets Johnnie, played by Taye Diggs. Johnnie, a military veteran. He falls deeply in love with Carlie, helping her rediscover the possibilities of connection and healing.

For Good, portraying Carlie was both meaningful and deeply personal. "My father was LAPD for 26 years," she shares. "I had recently gone through a divorce myself. I’m in a space now where I...

Taye Diggs on getting his groove back in ‘Forever’: ‘This role was very therapeutic for me’
Image
"She put me on the map."

So says Taye Diggs of Terry McMillan, the writer-producer who catapulted him to stardom in 1998 with How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Reflecting on that period of his life, the 54-year-old actor remembers fully expecting to become a star. "I don't know who I thought I was," he recalls with a laugh (watch our full video interview above). "I remember graduating from college and saying, 'I'm going straight to the top.' When I got Rent (on Broadway) I was like, 'Ok, when is the next movie coming?' I don't know where I got that confidence from because I don't have it anymore."

Looking to get his own groove back, Diggs reunited with his old friend in Lifetime's Terry McMillan Presents: Forever. Diggs served as an executive producer with McMillan and star, playing Johnnie, a military veteran who falls head over heels for...

The star made the announcement herself in an Instagram video on Tuesday, the morning before the finale airs for the 14th season of the Bravo series. Outrageously early Emmy odds: ‘The Penguin’ stars Cristin Milioti and Colin Farrell lead the movie/limited series acting races
Image
At this time last year, few likely had heard of Richard Gadd or Jessica Gunning, and the term “baby reindeer” didn’t immediately call to mind a harrowing exploration of sexual abuse and codependency. Yet, within a month, Baby Reindeer became one of last year’s most widely seen shows, and when the Emmy Awards announced its winners in the limited series and movie categories in September, Gadd, Gunning, and Baby Reindeer won. That’s illustrative of how quickly fortunes can change in the limited series race, which typically resets each season (save for an anthology series like Monsters or Fargo). Ahead, the early 2025 Emmy Awards odds in the movie/limited series categories.

10 Romance Movies From The 1990s That Were Ahead Of Their Time
Image
Romance movies say a lot about the contemporary cultural mindsets of the time they were made, and the 1990s are no exception. Filmmaking and moviegoing were changing during this pivotal decade, and many topics that were considered taboo were brought to the forefront of cinema because society was becoming ready for more subversive and experimental movies. Whether this was expressed through style or subject matter, the way these films approached storytelling holds up well when compared to modern works. Many of the filmmakers behind these projects have gone on to help transform cinema.

The 1990s are often considered a large part of the Golden Age of rom-coms, but many of the most revolutionary pieces of cinema from the decade brilliantly blend genres. Though there are many great rom-coms from the '90s that are better remembered, they're of their time and adhere to the formulas and archetypes that were popular at the time.

Garcelle Beauvais Says Lifetime Film ‘Tempted by Love’ Won’t ‘Shy Away’ From Aging’s Realities: ‘That’s What Real Women Go Through’
Garcelle Beauvais
Garcelle Beauvais said her May-December romance film “Terry McMillan Presents: Tempted by Love” won’t avoid any of the realities that come with women and aging, noting that menopause and body aches are part of the natural process of getting older.

“When [Terry McMillan and I] were collaborating on ‘Tempted by Love,’ I really wanted it to come from a real place,” Beauvais told TheWrap. “At first we’re like, ‘Is it too much to do the arthritis? Is it too much to do the menopause?’ But we’re like, ‘But that’s what real women go through.’ So why would we shy away from that?”

The film, which stars and is executive produced by Beauvais, follows the journey of world-renowned chef Ava, who has been living in Europe but rushes home to care for her elderly aunt in South Carolina after she suffers from a fall. She’s then...

‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ At 25: Angela Bassett & Kevin Sullivan On Taye Diggs’ Casting, Whoopi Goldberg’s Generosity & Film’s Lasting Impact — Tribeca
Image
Angela Bassett is a force of nature in Hollywood. Her talent, strength, and longevity in an industry known for its fleeting moments of fame speak to her relevance and influence. Her rise as a distinguished African American actress in Hollywood has had an impact on the entertainment industry and the representation of Black talent. Bassett’s breakthrough role came in 1993 when she played Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. This performance was instrumental in breaking away from the tropes that plagued Black actresses in Hollywood, demonstrating that they could carry films of prestige.

In 1998, Angela Bassett brought the lead character of Stella Payne to life in the film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In the first feature film from Kevin Sullivan, Bassett’s portrayal of a successful 40-year-old stockbroker who takes a well-deserved vacation in Jamaica,...

Author Alisa Lynn Valdés Is Back With a New Latina Heroine
Image
Twenty years ago, Alisa Lynn Valdés released her first novel, "The Dirty Girls Social Club." It was a runaway success, and the writer published 12 more books in its wake. Then she took a 10-year break, coming back with "Hollow Beasts," a suspenseful murder mystery that is out now as an e-book and hitting bookshelves on Apr. 1. The novel introduces us to a new protagonist - rookie game warden and former poetry professor Jodi Luna.

I catch up with Valdés while we hike out to the spot where she originally dreamed up her new novel. Looking back, Valdés isn't sure if writing "The Dirty Girls Social Club" was selling out or not. She styled that first book after what she heard the publishing industry wanted - a Latina Terry McMillan (who wrote beloved titles like "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back").

"What does it mean to be...

She expanded with parts in film and TV, including “Boyz in the Hood” (1991). Breakthrough recognition would come in the next couple of years, as Bassett co-starred with Denzel Washington in “Malcolm X” (as Malcolm’s wife Betty Shabazz) and her Oscar nominated role as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993).

‘The Best Man: Final Chapters’ Bids a Bittersweet Farewell to a Black Rom-Com Classic: TV Review
Image
For fans of a specific period of Black cinema, Peacock’s “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” is an epic, end-of-an-era conclusion on par with “Avengers: Endgame.” The specific period spans from roughly 1990 to 2000, when the Black romantic comedy grew into its power. The confluence of two successful movements — Black romantic fiction and Black indie cinema — birthed such classics as “Love Jones,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Love and Basketball,” among others.

Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man” series has grown an outsize influence among Black rom-com aficionados because it has acted as a living history of the subgenre. Its core ensemble — Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa DeSousa — is a true murderers’ row of the era. They’ve spent their careers acting together in a raft of films, and Black rom-com fans that don’t count the original “Best Man...

‘The Masked Singer’ spoilers: The Serpent is …
Image
One of the four remaining contestants in Group B of “The Masked Singer” didn’t make the cut in episode 8, which aired on Fox on November 18. The best performer of this bunch is the one disguised as the Serpent. While we can’t see his face, we are sure we know his voice.

The Serpent first performed on September 30 when he rocked the house with his rousing rendition of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. Two weeks later, he shifted genres and make the country hit “The Bones” by Maren Morris his own.

We are certain that we know the name of the celebrity hiding inside the Serpent costume. We ruled out those guesses by the judges that it is someone from the original cast of the Broadway hit musical “Hamilton.” Keep reading as we’ve got all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the real name of the Serpent.
