2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

Last year, the Dragon Warrior Po came roaring back to theaters in a big way with Kung Fu Panda 4. The latest installment in the Jack Black-led animated series from DreamWorks returned with a massive $547.7 million global box office and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 71% from critics and 83% from audiences, showing that viewers still loved the fighting bear, even after eight years away from screens. The film's remarkable run on the big screen even shook up the formula a bit, introducing a new partner for Po in the form of Zhen, a fox bandit played by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Awkwafina, who turns out to be an unexpected hero like the panda himself. Netflix subscribers have had ten months to take in the martial arts adventure, but that time's about to run out on August 21, when it leaves the platform and heads back to Peacock.

Anyone who's watched the John Wick franchise over the last 11 years knows that Keanu Reeves' titular assassin isn't the man to mess with, no matter how much people try. One young man dared to take on Baby Yaga, and is lucky he didn't face his wrath first-hand as police recover important valuables tied to the most recent John Wick sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4.

According to Deadline, several watches belonging to Reeves were recovered by Chilean law enforcement and turned over to the FBI after burglars initially stole them from Reeves' Hollywood Hills home in late 2023. Two-time Oscar winner Renée Zellweger will forever be known as rom-com royalty, from the Bridget Jones films to Jerry Maguire. However, she hasn't been afraid to wade into the waters of horror. Her roots in the genre stem all the way back to her first leading role in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, though arguably her most interesting spooky role would come 14 years later with the release of the star-studded supernatural thriller, Case 39. Directed by Christian Alvart, it paired Zellweger with a Bradley Cooper fresh off of The Hangover for a story centered on a seemingly sweet kid named Lilith (Jodelle Ferland) who proves to be much more than she lets on. Considered one of the greatest action film series of all time, Derek Kolstad’s prominent John Wick franchise has come a long way from the first movie, released in 2014. The installment has since spawned three sequels and multiple spin-offs, as well as several more projects in development, including a fifth chapter. Keanu Reeves headlines the films in the titular role as a legendary hitman unwillingly drawn back into the criminal underworld after retiring to seek revenge against the men who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife.

Despite the franchise’s popularity, there aren't many streamers that provide all four chapters, and as of June 2025, the films were available to stream on only Peacock, Fubo TV, USA Network’s streaming app, and NBC.com. Although John Wick fans may have a bit of time to wait until the fifth installment of the gun-fu movie makes its way to the big screen, there is hope on the horizon. As fans of the franchise, we know how difficult it can be to have your very own binge-a-thon at home from one streamer alone, as — typically speaking — the four installments are usually spread out over a variety of platforms. With John Wick 5 in the works at Lionsgate, fans of the titular action franchise are getting another way to feed their anticipation for the next sequel. John Wick enthusiasts will soon be able to watch all four movies on Hulu.

As confirmed by Hulu, all four John Wick films will become available on the Disney-owned streaming service beginning Aug. 15, 2025. Hulu is the second streamer to have access every John Wick movie; Peacock unveiled the franchise in May 2025.

Starring Keanu Reeves as the eponymous professional hitman fighting for a new purpose, John Wick nearly didn't get off the ground after the first film yielded underwhelming test screenings and faced pushback from Lionsgate executives about its most harrowing scene. But it eventually became a massive success, with the film earning critical and commercial acclaim.

But there was only one official game associated with the franchise, John Wick Hex, developed by Bithell Games, and now we are about to see it go, as its publisher, Big Fan Games, is removing it from sale. Elsewhere, names may get jumbled or outright changed, due to the Roman Empire gradually cannibalizing (syncretizing) any and all religions they came across. While Egypt's mythology really got put through the wringer, Greeks saw their Gods changed as well: Zeus became Jupiter, Ares became Mars, etcetera, regardless of how well the legends fit. But centuries later, the Greeks returned to prominence, helped in no small part by how well these stories could use the new wave of special effects and color film.

Ray Harryhausen and his magical stop-motion figures brought Perseus (Harry Hamlin) to life against monstrous Medusa in "Clash of the Titans" while Italy pushed the sword and sandal epic into the foreground with a rash of movies all about Hercules.

The second and final season of “The Sandman” got split into multiple parts, which means there is just enough space to sneak in a binge before the back half of the story drops.

Candidates for this quick binge include other Neil Gaiman adaptations like “Good Omens” and “American Gods,” which are also stories that deal with family, the dangers of meddling with the gods, and the pros and cons of magic and power. There is something for everyone looking to fill the “The Sandman” void in their life.

It's a dangerous game to try and mix things up with a franchise, even more so when you dare to spin-off a big screen universe into a television show. That's the issue the "John Wick" property ran into when someone got the bright idea to give us "The Continental," a prequel series that explored how Winston (who's played by Ian McShane as an older man in the "John Wick" movies) came into ownership of the titular hotel -- a place where assassins can kick off their shoes and spend a few nights knowing their fellow hit-people are forbidden from killing anyone on the consecrated ground. But while "The Continental" was based on an interesting idea, its execution was anything but successful, with the show earning a pretty harsh response from critics.

2025 is halfway over, and at this point, I am realizing that most of the movies I was excited about this year have been a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean that there were no good movies released this as there have been some extremely entertaining ones. Set aboard a train, it sees Wick awakened by an employee who reveals that the initial travel schedule has been changed, leading to him taking a call from Anjelica Huston's Director. Having lent him transport in John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum in exchange for a favor, the Director reveals she's cashing in that favor earlier than expected due to Eve's vendetta stirring up tension for the Ruska Roma. Making movies is challenging, and making a splash at the box office is even harder. On paper, a John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas as a lethal soldier of the Ruska Roma sounds like a guaranteed money-maker. However, audiences are fickle, and going to the cinema is expensive, even if you’re sneaking snacks from the Bulk Barn and requesting sparkling water instead of Coca-Cola. Despite positive reviews and solid word of mouth, Armas’s Ballerina stumbled at the box office. Thankfully, Ballerina is already Jetéing to the top of the PVOD charts.

The action franchise started in 2014 with John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves as the legendary assassin who comes out of retirement to seek revenge against those who killed his dog, a final gift from his recently deceased wife.

Since then, the franchise and its intricate mythology have expanded significantly with three sequels and John Wick: Chapter 5 currently in the works, all directed by Chad Stahelski. Other than the mainline movies, there have also been various spin-offs that have expanded the franchise. This includes the Peacock miniseries The Continental, exploring the origins of the titular hotel and assassin safe haven.

There are also several John Wick spinoff movies in the works, including one focused on Caine with Donnie Yen reprising his role from John Wick: Chapter 4 in addition to directing.

Although John Wick is set to have a highly-anticipated fifth installment, the franchise is rapidly expanding beyond the reach of Keanu Reeves' titular character. The first major spin-off, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, hit theaters earlier this year to generally positive buzz. The acclaimed spin-off is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 76% rating, while audiences especially loved it, registering an impressive 93% on the Popcornmeter scale. Of course, it is hard to compare to the action film series that has grossed $1 billion, but Ballerina was able to recapture the magic and introduce a new assassin, played by Ana de Armas. Though it's one of the most intriguing John Wick films, it appears From the World of John Wick: Ballerina won't be enjoying big-money success when it's all said and done. As Ballerina closes in on a significant box-office milestone, its chances of profiting during its theatrical run are increasingly unlikely.

According to The Numbers, Ballerina has made over $95 million worldwide since its June 6, 2025 debut, with the film expected to cross the $100 million mark very soon. The domestic and international splits for the John Wick spinoff are almost 50/50, with the action thriller earning $45.7 million domestically and $49.7 million from overseas territories.

While the news of Ballerina approaching the $100 million plateau brings box-office solace for the Ana de Armas-led movie, it's highly unlikely that it will turn a profit. With a $90 million budget, Ballerina would need to make 2.5 times more than it cost ($225 million) to break even, using Hollywood's typical box-office math.

A new Prime Video action movie has quickly climbed the streaming charts, just days after premiering. Incorporating original and Amazon MGM Studios content, among other movies and TV shows, Prime Video houses many popular releases, including Red, White, & Royal Blue and Totally Killer. The streaming service has also adapted various Tom Clancy novels and characters in Without Remorse and Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Another successful Prime series is Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson, which has been praised by audiences for its stunt work and fight sequences.

Prime Video continues releasing action-heavy movies, most of which perform well statistically and feature recognizable actors. The Tomorrow War, following Dan Forester (portrayed by Chris Pratt) as he fights a futuristic battle, set viewership records in 2021 and led to sequel development. Deep Cover, which also features Sean Bean, Paddy Considine (MobLand), and Ian McShane, currently has an impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, with a slightly lower audience score of 79%.

In Deep Cover, Howard, Bloom, and Mohammed play three improv comics who are recruited by an undercover cop (Bean) to infiltrate London’s criminal underground. Dallas plays struggling comic and improv teacher Kat Boyles. Bloom and Mohammed play Marlon and Hugh, the two students she enlists to help her in her mission.

The Film Reunites Dallas and Jurassic World Writers

Deep Cover comes from director Tom Kingsley (Ghosts)and writers Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, Ben Ashton, and Alexander Owen. The film reunited Howard with several Jurassic Park franchise alums.

The 2025 summer movie season is in full swing, with big-ticket franchise flicks like "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning," "Lilo & Stitch," and "How to Train Your Dragon" doing great runs at the box office. Hopefully, your first instinct is to hit your local multiplex, because movies are made to be seen in theaters, and exhibitors could certainly use your business. But the streamers are always out there generating their own content, and sometimes they cough up something worth watching.

Last summer, Netflix gave us what could've been one of the year's biggest blockbusters in "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F," and they'll no doubt attract loads of eyeballs a month from now when they unveil Adam Sandler's long-awaited "Happy Gilmore 2." Our top movie pick this week is Apple TV+’s straight-to-streaming thriller Echo Valley, which finds Julianne Moore doing anything for her daughter Sydney Sweeney. Moore plays Kate, a recently widowed woman whose daughter Claire’s (Sweeney) heroin addiction has made her manipulative, unreliable, and prone to getting caught up in bad situations. One day, Claire shows up at Kate’s farm covered in her abusive boyfriend’s blood, and asks for Kate’s help getting rid of his body. It only gets twistier from there.

The film is directed by Michael Pearce, who is working in similar psychological thriller territory as his BAFTA-winning debut, the Jessie Buckley-led Beast. He gives Moore and Sweeney space to go to dark places.
