The “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” stars celebrated the prequel series’ premiere at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles on Monday night and were welcomed by the original show’s cast members Graham McTavish and Sam Heughan.
“It is a strange out-of-body experience,” McTavish said about the “Outlander” universe expansion for Variety’s Behind the Show presented by Starz. “It’s been 11 years since we did the first premiere in San Diego, and I remember that so well. They all come into this very fresh and new. They’ve never experienced anything like it before. It was the same for us. It’s like a mirror to see them going through the same process.”
Heughan also shared his excitement for fans to experience the new series as they await the highly anticipated final episodes of “Outlander” that will be released in 2026.

Outlander star Graham McTavish knows a thing or two about sweeping dramas with big themes and bigger characters. So when he sings the praises of Landman, the latest series from Taylor Sheridan and Billy Bob Thornton, it’s worth paying attention. Speaking at the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere (via Gold Derby), McTavish didn’t mince words. He called Landman one of the shows this year he felt was most deserving of Emmy nominations — even though neither received any.
Despite Landman’s strong ratings, critical acclaim, and a Golden Globe nomination for Billy Bob Thornton, the oil drama was completely shut out of the major Emmy categories when nominations were announced last week. And it wasn’t alone. Not a single one of Sheridan’s six shows currently on air — including Mayor of Kingstown, Yellowstone, 1923, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman — received a single nod in marquee categories like acting,...

At the Outlander: Blood of My Blood premiere, Graham McTavish made headlines — not just for promoting Starz’s new prequel series, but for using the red carpet spotlight to throw some love toward Landman and MobLand, two of Paramount+’s most buzzed-about dramas. McTavish, known for playing Dougal MacKenzie in the Outlander universe, and more famously, playing the role of Dwalin for The Hobbit trilogy), didn’t hesitate when asked which shows he thought deserved Emmy attention this year. “Landman and MobLand,” he said firmly, praising Taylor Sheridan’s oil-field epic and Guy Ritchie’s stylish gangster saga as two of the series he couldn't stop watching this year. And he’s not alone in thinking that.
While the Emmys may have completely shut out Sheridan’s Landman — despite a Golden Globe nomination for Billy Bob Thornton — fans have flocked to the series. It became the highest-rated freshman drama...

For more than a decade now, “Outlander” has held mooning fans (and single-show Starz subscribers) in thrall, captivating with its time-traveling love story, historical drama and very spicy sex scenes. And yet, given that it’s based on a series of books by Diana Gabaldon, the show’s ending is in sight, with its eighth and final season due out early next year.
Fortunately for Starz (and for kilt-lovers), Gabaldon’s “Outlander” universe has always been sweeping and expansive. While she wrote the original series of books, spanning decades and continents, Gabaldon was tucking away backstory details in her mind, building a family history for main characters Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall.
And thus began “Outlander: Blood Of My Blood,” the new prequel series from Starz. Framed around source material from executive producer Gabaldon, the series follows the romantic arc of two couples: Jamie’s parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy...

It would not be outlandish to say that Starz has complete faith in “Outlander.” Not only is the tentpole series gearing up for its heavily anticipated final episodes next year, but the fantasy period drama is even getting a prequel to hold audiences over until then.

Plus, original series stars Graham McTavish and Sam Heughan were in attendance to help welcome the new cast into the family.

The streets of West Hollywood were transformed into Scotland on Monday as Starz rolled out the blue carpet for the premiere of the Outlander prequel series, Blood of My Blood.
A bagpipe processional greeted guests, media, and eager fans, before any actors began arriving. Soon enough, the Outlander universe’s newest stars showed up brandishing Sharpies, which they used to autograph Blood of My Blood-branded tote bags that the Starz team handed out. The majority of the prequel’s cast are Hollywood newbies, but that didn’t stop the Outlander faithful from snapping selfies and gushing about how excited they were to fall in love with their characters. Jamie Fraser himself, Sam Heughan, hit the carpet to deafening cheers. He waved and winked to fans and slipped into some group photos. The frenzy amid onlookers didn’t calm until the Outlander leading man scooted inside for the screening of the prequel’s first episode.

After almost ten long years, one of TV’s most brutal historical sagas returns this winter with a new house, and a new vision for its future. Spartacus: House of Ashur is bringing back the sandaled-sex and sword-swinging violence that made the original show and its sequels a hit – even if it was a little overshadowed by a certain HBO series about thrones and dragons. Now a new trailer for the upcoming revival is reminding everyone of just how gloriously gory the series was and will be once again.
Revealed at Sdcc, the trailer for Spartacus: House of Ashur brings plenty of blood and gore, a little bit of steamy action that has nothing to do with Roman baths, and the kind of stylized epic visuals that made the show a standout during its original series. Can House of Ashur bring a whole new audience to the Spartacus saga? Check...

Roughly two years after the continuation was first announced, epic footage for Spartacus: House of Ashur has finally been released, courtesy of San Diego Comic-Con.
The new Spartacus series takes a daring alternate-history approach, offering a fresh twist on the original story.
It explores a major "what if" scenario: what if Ashur had survived the events on Mount Vesuvius at the end of Spartacus: Vengeance?
In this reimagined timeline, Ashur is rewarded for aiding the Romans in defeating the slave rebellion by being granted control of Batiatus’s former gladiator school.
The series departs from the canon of Spartacus: War of the Damned and reshapes key events from Vengeance, setting the stage for an entirely new storyline and character arcs that follow a very different course from the original.

The series premieres this fall, and today at Sdcc, attendees finally had the chance to check out the full trailer for the upcoming series.

Fan-Favorite 'Outlander' Star Makes Hilarious Surprise Appearance at 'Blood of My Blood's Sdcc Panel
AnOutlanderalum made a surprise visit to the Outlander: Blood of My BloodSan Diego Comic-Con panel today and fans went wild with his unexpected (and hilarious) appearance. Graham McTavish, who plays Jamie's (Sam Heughan) uncle Dougal MacKenzie in the Starz series, jokingly intervened in the panel's Q&a session to ask Sam Retford a question of his own. Retford is about to play the younger version of Dougal in the prequel, and McTavish made sure to congratulate him on wearing the "wig and the beard". This comment was particularly funny because McTavish's character is bald in Outlander, whereas the younger version of Dougal will be played by an actor with a full head of hair.
After drawing some laughter from the crowd, McTavish continued. "I haven't seen any of the new show, but I'm genuinely, really looking forward to it," he said, before asking Retford the following. "How did you dive into the soft,...

The new Spartacus series, House of Ashur, is coming to Starz this fall, and creator Steven S. DeKnight is ready to tell a different story. DeKnight told Entertainment Weekly that the original Spartacus show was a big challenge for him.
He said, “I think I needed a decade to recuperate from the original experience, which was wonderful, but just grueling and emotionally gut wrenching.” The death of Andy Whitfield, the first actor to play Spartacus, made it even harder.
For years, Starz asked DeKnight to come back and make more Spartacus, but he wasn’t ready. When he finally felt up to it, he thought about new ideas. He considered famous Roman stories like Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra but found them expensive and overdone. Instead, he chose to focus on a less-known character from the original show — Ashur.
Nick Tarabay played Ashur, a smart but sneaky ex-gladiator. In the original series,...

The new Spartacus series, House of Ashur, is finally coming to Starz this fall, and creator Steven S. DeKnight is ready to tell a fresh story. DeKnight shared with Entertainment Weekly that the original Spartacus show left a big mark on him.
After the tough experience of making the first series, and the heartbreaking loss of Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus and died from cancer, DeKnight needed time to recover. He explained, “I think I needed a decade to recuperate from the original experience, which was wonderful, but just grueling and emotionally gut wrenching.”
For years, Starz kept asking DeKnight if he wanted to return to the Spartacus world, but he kept saying no because it was too hard. Then, finally, he felt ready. He began thinking about new ideas but realized many famous Roman stories had been told many times and were very expensive to make.

When Spartacus: House of Ashur was first announced in 2023, fans weren't even counting on the possibility of a return to the arena after so many years. However, the sequel series is really happening, and this fall we will be able to get a taste of one of the buzziest series from a decade ago. During an interview with EW, returning showrunner Steven S. DeKnight talked about the process of revisiting the franchise and why it took so long to do it.
During the interview, DeKnight revealed that one of the reasons why he "kept saying no year after year" is because making Spartacus was a big challenge. With several cast members, tons of extras, and an epic scale that evokes the Gladiator films and the original 1960s drama, the show was ambitious in ways that were not too common at the time of the show's release. DeKnight further explained:

When it was announced that Spartacus was returning with a new sequel series, fans were surprised by some things about the announcement. The biggest one was that the new series would follow Ashur (Nick E. Tarabay), a character who met a pretty much irreversible end in Spartacus: Vengeance. However, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight explained that Spartacus: House of Ashur takes place in an alternate reality. During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the series creator revealed what other characters are going to return for the new series.
During the interview, DeKnight revealed that Starz wanted to do a Spartacus follow-up for years, but a number of events got in the way. He mentioned the premature death of Andy Whitfield, who was the title character in the debut season — he was replaced by Liam McIntyre (Bring Him To Me). The showrunner revealed that Whitfield's death "took the wind out of everybody's sails,...

It's been twelve years since the rebellion led by Spartacus (Andy Whitfield/Liam McIntyre) came to a crushing end in Spartacus: War of the Damned. Now, we are finally returning to the gladiator world with an unexpected figure in the lead. Spartacus: House of Ashur is finally nearing its premiere, and in order to tease the upcoming epic series, EW unveiled a slate of first-look images that showcase the new warrior, the very first female gladiator, and the return of Ashur (Nick Tarabay) as lead. The series is set to premiere on Starz this fall.
The images reveal Ashur like we've never seen him. While on Spartacus, he was a sly figure who relied on tricks and manipulation to get his way; now he is the commander of the Ludus and has a slate of gladiators training under him. The story is set in an alternate reality in which Ashur wasn't brutally killed,...

The 33rd Raindance Film Festival will open the crypt once more for its annual Horror Strand, running 19–22 June 2025 at London’s Vue Piccadilly. This year’s horror selection digs deeper into the subconscious and stretches the genre in unexpected directions, showcasing a fever dream of films that blend folklore, future-tech, eroticism and existential dread.
Curated to confront, disturb and confound, Raindance Horror 2025 launches with Deformelody: An American Nightmare, an off-kilter slasher satire shot entirely on a mobile phone over three years. From there, the madness expands: Dirty Boy, starring Graham McTavish, explores a cult member’s descent into paranoia and murder. Paul Raschid’s The Run invites the audience to choose the fate of a woman on a morning jog turned deadly, with horror legends Dario Argento and Franco Nero making appearances. Meanwhile, Zhaza, from Kazakhstan, delivers a feral, rage-fuelled take on familial betrayal and vigilante justice.
On Saturday, things turn folkloric and feral.

London’s Raindance Film Festival will kick off its 33rd edition with the world premiere of Christopher M. Anthony’s boxing drama “Heavyweight,” starring Nicholas Pinnock, Jason Isaacs, and Jordan Bolger.
The festival will close with the international premiere of Camilla Guttner’s art school drama “The Academy,” featuring Maja Bons as a student navigating the ruthless terrain of the art world.
“Raindance is always one to punch above its weight, so it’s appropriate that the festival’s 33rd edition should open with the world premiere of a British debut feature about a wildcard boxer,” said Raindance founder Elliot Grove.
The festival, running June 18-27 at Vue Piccadilly, marks a significant comeback with 70 narrative and documentary features — a 90% increase from last year and the first time since 2019 the festival will present so many films.

Back in 2002, I witnessed director Neil Marshall’s werewolf movie Dog Soldiers in a packed theatrical screening at a 24-hour horror marathon where the audience around me laughed and cheered at all the right moments. It was a great viewing experience – and because Dog Soldiers was so cool that it could provide an experience like that, I have been rooting for Marshall ever since. His career has had its ups and downs, but I’m always glad to hear he’s working on something new – so I was pleased to see the Variety report that Outlander actor Graham McTavish has signed on to star in Marshall’s latest action horror survival thriller, Gunn.
Although Marshall usually writes his own films, he’ll be directing this one from a screenplay written by Doug Rao that won the Gold Prize at the Page International Screenwriting Awards a while back. The survival horror...

Neil Marshall, who is best known as the director of Dog Soldiers, Hellboy, and episodes of the HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, has lined up his next project and its lead star. According to Variety, the British filmmaker is taking the reins on a new high-concept survival thriller titled Gunn, which is expected to mix action and horror against the backdrop of a secluded offshore platform. House of the Dragon and Outlander actor Graham McTavish is set to star in the upcoming movie, though his role remains undisclosed for now.

Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall is moving onto Gunn, with Graham McTavish signing up for the new survival horror.
Director Neil Marshall is heading to an oil rig it seems for his next movie, as he puts together a new survival horror by the name of Gunn.
Penned by Doug Rao (and his screenplay is an award-winner already), the movie will take place on a North Sea oil rig that’s been overtaken by a religious sect. It sounds a bit The Wicker Man in the middle of the ocean when described like that. Graham McTavish has signed on the dotted line to lead the movie.
Neil Marshall has form in this genre too, of course. Films such as Dog Soldiers and The Descent sit on his curriculum vitae, and he’s also behind movies such as Doomsday and Centurion. More recently, he directed the 2019 take on Hellboy,...

Spoilers for "Invincible" season 3 to follow.
Robert Kirkman first worked with Steven Yeun when the latter played Glenn on "The Walking Dead" (a series based on Kirkman's long-running zombie comic). Then, when Prime Video turned Kirkman's superhero comic book "Invincible" into an animated show, Yeun got the series' leading role.
The cast of "Invincible" has since included a handful of other "Walking Dead" alums. The latest of them came the end of season 3 when Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played the baseball bat-wielding apocalypse warlord Negan, arrived as the Viltrumite warrior Conquest. ("The Boys" isn't the only superhero show out there with Mr. Morgan in its cast.)
Conquest is one of the oldest, most powerful, and most monstrous Viltrumites. In the season 3 finale, "I Thought You'd Never Shut Up," Conquest gives Invincible the fight of his life. But there's one Viltrumite out there who leaves even Conquest trembling in his...

Quick LinksThorin's Short Beard Was an Act of SolidarityDwarves Were More Important in The Hobbit Than in The Lord of the Rings
Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy established what the Dwarves of Middle-earth looked like. Those present in the prologue of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and at the Council of Elrond were all similar in appearance to Gimli; they had long hair, exaggerated facial features achieved through the use of prosthetic makeup, and most famously, large, bushy beards. They represented the classic, stereotypical image of fantasy Dwarves. Yet when Jackson returned almost a decade later for The Hobbit trilogy, he and the artists at Wētā Workshop broke the typical Dwarven mold. Some members of Thorin's Company, such as Balin and Glóin, would have fit right in alongside The Lord of the Rings' Dwarves, but others looked quite unusual by Dwarven standards.
