In the second act of Real Women Have Curves: The Musical, opening tonight on Broadway at the James Earl Jones Theatre, the women working in a hot, small, ramshackle California dress factory momentarily break free of inhibition and ageism and the body shame over their various sizes and shapes and, following the lead of the defiant, soon-off-for-college Ana (Tatianna Córdoba), one by one strip down to their underwear and sing the title song. It’s a scene that’s funny, tender, compassionate and so well-performed by the eight women on stage that it earned a mid-show standing ovation the night I was in attendance.

The scene also succinctly and entertainingly presents the humor, pride, tenacity and bravery of a Latino community under constant siege and scrutiny.

Unfortunately, there are too few other moments in Real Woman Have Curves that soar like that, that deliver the joy and delight of shaking...

Update: Real Women Have Curves: The Musical has announced additional members of the production’s Broadway company who will join the previously announced Tatianna Córdoba (Ana) and Justina Machado (Carmen). Newly announced cast members are Florencia Cuenca (Broadway debut) as Estela, Shelby Acosta (1776) as Prima Flaca, Carla Jimenez (Broadway debut) as Pancha, Aline Mayagoitia (Broadway debut) as Itzel, Mason Reeves (Broadway debut) as Henry, Jennifer Sánchez (Elf) as Rosalí, Sandra Valls (Broadway debut) as Prima Fulvia, and Quincy Hampton, Zeus Mendoza, Claudia Mulet, Christopher M. Ramirez, Monica Tulia Ramirez, Shadia Fairuz, Elisa Galindez, and Omar Madden.

Casting for the role of Raúl will be announced at a later date.

Puss in Boots hits UK cinemas this Friday, 9th December and we’re very much looking forward to the whole of the UK getting this fabulous movie! Our review went up yesterday and you can have a read here. I am unable to draw to save my life and I always find it fascinating watching these extremely talented animators turn something from a drawing into a 3D object on a movie screen! Love it! Sky Movies have had the honour of debuting the first UK poster for new Dreamworks movie, Puss in Boots. By all accounts we thought this movie was going to be a flop when it was first announced but after seeing about 10 or 15 minutes of it at the Big Screen event a few weeks ago, it’s one we’re now most looking forward to!

This new poster is a play on the ones we’ve seen previously but features some of the other characters we can expect to see in the movie including Humpty Dumpty played by the fabulous Zach Galifianakis. If you’ve not seen the trailer for the movie, you can watch it here.

When I first heard that Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots was in the works, I was certain it was going to be shockingly bad but than Paramount/Dreamworks Animation did that clever thing at Empire Big Screen a couple of weeks ago where they reel you in with a few really funny clips from the movie and I was sold. Puss in Boots – one of the most beloved characters of the Shrek universe – tells the hilarious and courageous (daring, bold, brave) tale of Puss’s (Antonio Banderas) early adventures as he teams with mastermind Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) and the street-savvy Kitty (Salma Hayek) to steal the famed Goose that lays the Golden Eggs.

Antonio Banderas reprises his title role in Puss in Boots, which was first seen in the 2004 sequel Shrek 2. The actor recently commented that Puss in Boots will be an origin story. Take a look at what he had to say below.

Last Friday, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg appeared at the Director's Guild of America in Hollywood, California to present his company's 2011 slate of animated film projects, which includes the upcoming sequel Kung Fu Panda 2, and the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots. On hand to join him were the director of Kung Fu Panda 2, Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda), and the film's star Jack Black (Gulliver's Travels), as well as Puss in Boots producer Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), the film's director Chris Miller (Shrek the Third), and it's star Antonio Banderas (Desperado). The company released three movies in 2010 including How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek Forever After, and MegaMind. The three films combined earned over $1.5 billion at the box office. If the presentation we saw is any indication, the company might just be able to match that total again this year.

Hollywoodnews.com: DreamWorks’ “Shrek” spinoff “Puss in Boots,” structured around Antonio Banderas’ spicy kitty, doesn’t reach theaters until November, so this clip qualifies as a very early tease. The trailer, and a poster, have been posted online this afternoon, and we’ve got them for you here:

But it doesn’t tell you too much. All Puss needs, according to the “bad kitty,” is his boots. He’s not the tubby feline of the fourth “Shrek” adventure. And this is supposed to be an origin story … or, at least, an adventure from Puss’s earlier days.

Beyond that, the clip doesn’t reveal much. “Puss” will be in 3D (like virtually all animated movies these days), and it co-stars the voices of Walt Dohrn (as the narrator) and Zeus Mendoza (as a rancher) – according to IMDb.com.

"All that I need... are the boots!" DreamWorks Animation has unveiled the first teaser trailer via Apple for Puss in Boots, the upcoming spin-off starring Antonio Banderas as the lovable warrior cat. This trailer starts off sounding a lot like another Inception trailer, but then gets hammy when Puss takes the stage. I still don't know how they're going to make an entire movie about this character entertaining, but we'll see how it turns out later this year. Besides Banderas, no other voice cast was listed except for Walt Dohrn as Narrator and Zeus Mendoza as a Rancher. Who else is in this? Anyway, check out the first teaser trailer and enjoy! Season 2 of "bicultural dramedy" web series Ylse (pronounced Eel-Say) kicked off today starting a 12-episode return. Ruth Livier, who's also the creator and lead writer of the series, is back as Ylse, an aspiring TV host working her way up the talk show circuit hoping to one day reach the level of her espoused idol Oprah. For now, however, Ylse is stuck in the dregs of the TV world on a bizarre Spanish language talk show. We've had our eye on this series for a while now, and we're glad to see it back for another season. The series had been picking up fans over the past year which included locking up a distribution deal with LatinHeat.com last fall and scoring the "Best Webisode" award at the 2009 Reel Rasquache Festival. Livier's bilingual script effortlessly jumps from English to Spanish, making the comedy easily accessible even for us Spanish newbies.
