Why Did Topher Grace Leave That '70s Show?
Image
"That '70s Show" went on for eight seasons, although most fans agree that not all of those seasons were created equal. Where exactly is the cutoff line between good "That '70s Show" and bad "That '70s Show?" Some say it's around the point where Donna went blonde. Others say it was shortly after Kelso and Donna returned from California. Some say the decline started as early as mid-season 3, when Lisa Robin Kelly left the show. One thing's clear, though: nobody cares much for season 8, because that's the season where Eric (Topher Grace) isn't in it.

In a certain sense, Eric's departure was inevitable. He was the smart, bookish member of the gang, someone who should've surely gone off to college shortly after season 5, but the show's longevity had the writers jumping through hoops to explain why he was sticking around so long after high school in seasons 6 and 7. Red's heart...

That ’70s Show: The SNL Actor Who Very Nearly Replaced Topher Grace as Eric Foreman Would’ve Destroyed the Series
Image
Imagine That ’70s Show without Topher Grace as Eric Foreman—the glue of the gang, the awkward yet lovable nerd we all rooted for. Now, picture an SNL comedian stepping into those vintage bell-bottoms instead. Sounds wild, right? Well, it almost happened. Before Grace landed the role, the producers considered a big-name funny guy to lead the Point Place crew.

Topher Grace in That 70’s Show | Credits: The Carsey-Werner Company

But here’s the kicker: his style of comedy would’ve flipped the show on its head, and not in a good way. The subtle charm and relatable awkwardness that made Eric a fan favorite? Yeah, gone. Instead, the basement vibes might’ve felt more like a stand-up gig gone wrong. Let’s just say it’s a casting bullet we’re all glad they dodged.

Why Recasting Eric Foreman in That ’70s Show Would’ve Been a Total Flop...

Why Did Topher Grace Leave “That ’70s Show” at the End of Season 7?
Image
That ’70s Show remains one of the most beloved sitcoms, bringing the nostalgia of the 1970s to audiences through the eyes of a group of teenage friends in fictional Point Place, Wisconsin. That ‘70s Show boasted of a stellar cast, in addition to Topher Grace as well.

It proved to be the first big sitcom role for one Ashton Kutcher, who starred alongside his former wife Mila Kunis. While Kutcher played the role of Michael Kelso, Kunis portrayed Jackie Burkhart.

Running from 1998 to 2006, the show’s charm came from the authentic dynamics of its characters, which also includes the protagonist Eric Forman, played by Topher Grace.

However, Grace’s exit after Season 7 left fans with questions about why he left and how his departure impacted the show. This article explores the reasons behind Grace’s decision, the repercussions for the series, and his eventual return in the spin-off, “That ’90s Show.

Jimmy Kimmel gives late-night TV its Jd Vance: Haley Joel Osment
Image
When Donald Trump tapped Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate, speculation began as to how late-night TV would portray the vice presidential hopeful. Now thanks to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, we have our first Vance impersonator in Haley Joel Osment.

Initially, the discussion about late-night TV's Vance centered on Saturday Night Live. The sketch show already has its Trum (James Austin Johnson) and Kamala Harris (Maya Rudolph). But the candidates' running mates have been harder for SNL to nail down.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! filled the void by introducing Haley Joel Osment as J.D. Vance during the show's live post-debate episode. Osment appeared in a sketch alongside Josh Meyers as California Governor Gavin Newson and James Adomian as MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.

Osment's take on Vance got a boost from some sight gags, including heavy eyeliner and a can of Diet Mountain Dew. There was also a subtle nod to...

Seth Meyers on His Return to ‘Late Night,’ the Evolution of ‘Strike Force Five’ and a ‘Warmer’ Talk Show Host Era
Image
Seth Meyers is thrilled to be back. After five months off the air due to the writers’ strike, “Late Night with Seth Meyers” returned on Oct. 2 and the host told TheWrap he and the staff fell back into their groove immediately — with an added pep in their step.

“I don’t recommend going through things like a pandemic or a writers’ strike for the purposes of appreciating your job more,” he said. “You should just do it independent of those massive disruptions. But that is a thing they serve to provide, which is a real appreciation for getting to come in to work every day.”

Meyers said there’s an “eagerness” in the staff’s attitude post-strike, bolstered by the fact that he and his writers all feel the work stoppage was worth the gains they received.

“It helps that the writers, myself included, all feel as though the strike was worth it,...

Late-Night Stars Take To The Stand-Up Circuit & Podcast Studios Amid Strikes
Image
What are all of the late-night stars up to right now?

As The Late Show, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night and The Daily Show were the first shows to be hit by the writers strike back in May, the hosts of those shows have not had the opportunity to give their hot takes on television in over three months – although the majority of them have all been regularly seen on picket lines across New York and LA.

Admittedly, the strike has largely been over the summer, when many of them would have been on hiatus, but it’s still interesting to see what they’ve been doing since having their desks taken away.

“I hate being off,” Seth Meyers told Deadline in April. “My vacation is doing the show. It is more fun than the beach. It is more fun than skiing. I’m done early enough...

What ever happened to the decommissioned Staten Island ferry that Pete Davidson and Colin Jost purchased back in early 2022?

Davidson offered an update during a recent appearance on the “Family Trips with the Meyers Brothers” podcast, detailing the plans that he and his former “Saturday Night Live” co-star have for the vessel.

“We just got all the plans built, and we had them do one of those computer-generated, ‘show you what it could be’ type things, and now we’re out to a few people,” he told the podcast’s hosts, Seth Meyers and brother Josh Meyers, as reported by People. “And it seems like it’s all going well, but it’s definitely like five years away.”

Is Leia Forman Actually Randy's Daughter on That 90s Show?
Image
That '90s Show gives viewers a window into the lives of the gang from That '70s Show after that series ended. The Netflix sitcom features a return to beloved Point Place, Wisconsin, with the familiar Forman home serving as the backdrop for most scenes. However, now there's a new generation of teens in the house, with Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti's daughter, Leia Forman, serving as the main character.

But a fan theory proposes that Leia isn't actually Eric and Donna's daughter. Much as That '70s Show wasn't known for its attentiveness to canon, That '90s Show has some math that doesn't check out. The chronology issue has led some fans to theorize that Leia's father is not Eric but someone whose presence is far better with the franchise's timeline: the widely disliked Randy Pearson.

No, Sitcoms, It Isn't Cute When You Add in Kids to Shake Things Up
Image
Sitcoms, even the most popular of them, have a certain shelf life. After a while, the premise either gets stale or is nearing its end date rapidly. When this occurs, the creative team has a number of options. First, they can simply go out on top, like Seinfeld. They can spin off a character from the show into their own sitcom, an option that has seen its shares of success (Frasier) and failures (Joey). Sometimes they bring a new character in, like Randy (Josh Meyers) in the final season of That '70s Show. There is one option, however, that is rolled out that has such a phenomenally low success rate that it shouldn't even be an option: adding a kid into the mix. In theory, it should work fine. Who doesn't love a kid? Yet it doesn't. A child that's introduced into a well-established cast simply to extend the life...

The White Lotus' Anthology Structure Made It A 'Win-Win' For Michael Imperioli
Image
Among the many big names to join the cast in "The White Lotus" season 2, Michael Imperioli was maybe the most exciting. Although he's never retired from acting at any point, he hasn't been in many big, high-profile movies or shows since "The Sopranos" ended. At least, not including "Many Saints of Newark," where he played the same character.

So it was fun to watch him play Dominic Di Grasso, a much more low-key, even-tempered man than Christopher Moltisanti ever was. While Dominic does have a similar infidelity problem, he does at least seem genuinely remorseful for his actions, and he isn't revealed to have any sort of hidden violent dark side throughout the season, despite what the early episodes seemed to hint at. And after six seasons of Christopher getting worse and worse, it's nice to see Imperioli play a character who actually kind of grows as a person.

For Imperioli,...

Seth Meyers and the Jonas Brothers went on a day-drinking extravaganza together for Tuesday’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” and, somehow, at least one compelling pop song was written.

They were joined by Meyers’ brother, Josh Meyers, and “30 Rock” star Jack McBrayer as the group participated in the usual shenanigans that take place when one day drinks with Seth Meyers — plus some added musical flair in honor of the JoBros.

First, as always, Meyers concocted some cocktails with clever names that don’t taste good, like the First Born, which starts with 30-year-old scotch and is finished off with a tablet of Alka Seltzer.

Red Oaks Season 1 Review
Nine episodes were provided prior to release

More than a year after its promising debut as part of Amazon’s 2014 pilot program, the ten-episode first season of suburban tennis comedy Red Oaks will be available for streaming tomorrow. As both an ‘80s throwback, and one reminiscent of youth-oriented films from the decade, a streaming service release is probably the hippest thing about the series. The type of coming of age story told by Red Oaks is an unmistakably familiar one, but it’s enjoyable to watch this sweetly mild series play a precise, low-impact game.

With ‘90s revivalism on the brink of claiming the nostalgia crown from the decade’s go-go sibling (let’s set the approaching “Back to The Future Day” as a coronation), the cinematic end of genuine ‘80s appreciation can be felt in the (creatively) bankrupt era grave robbing of movies like Terminator: Genisys and Pixels. In TV land,...

Craig Roberts, Gage Golightly, and Oliver Cooper in Red Oaks (2014)
Review: Amazon goes retro with '80s-set country club comedy 'Red Oaks'
Craig Roberts, Gage Golightly, and Oliver Cooper in Red Oaks (2014)
If any man alive has the right to argue for TV's recent ascension over movies, it would be David Chase. But "The Sopranos" creator has never seen it that way, telling me a few years ago that the only obvious advantage he thinks TV has is that "there’s more of it, and you can get into more detail. I guess maybe this is what it comes down to: in a television show, you can spend a lot of money on very little small things about people.” That ability to expand stories and drill down on characters has always been TV's greatest strength, but it's been particularly obvious with the migration of indie filmmakers to TV over the last few years. Shows like "Transparent," "Girls," "Togetherness," and Hulu's new "Casual" could have easily been made into 90-minute movies that played the festival circuit; instead, we get longer versions that really...

Failed TV pilots that paved the way for breakout hits
Had these pilots been given the green light, we might have been without Breaking Bad, 24, Hannibal, Community and more…

It’s not all grumble and moan round here when TV networks decline to pick up pilots. Sometimes, we’re even grateful.

Hindsight teaches that every so often, passing on a particular show is the best thing a channel could have done. Not ordering one pilot to series spurs its creators on to start another, and frees up its cast to join new projects.

Had the failures below all thrived, there’s a chance we could now be living in a world with no Breaking Bad, Hannibal, or even South Park. Had these pilots gone on to enjoy healthy, lengthy lives, then Jack Bauer, Oberyn Martell, Chandler Bing and more might all be unrecognisable today.

Here then, are the TV pilots we’re grateful weren’t taken to series because their...

Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Judith Light, and Alexandra Billings in Transparent (2014)
Amazon hits some bumps with its third pilot season
Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Judith Light, and Alexandra Billings in Transparent (2014)
Amazon keeps accelerating the pace and output of its "pilot season" process. The original batch of Amazon pilots were presented to the public in April of last year; of those, only "Alpha House" (which got renewed for a second season) and "Betas" (which remains in limbo) got picked up. The second batch of pilots were unveiled less than a year later, and Amazon ordered almost all of them — other than "Rebels," the pro football comedy that no one seemed to like — to series. That was in February, and while none of those new shows has debuted — "Transparent," the best of the bunch, will premiere all of its episodes, Netflix-style, on September 26 — Amazon yesterday unveiled its third pilot season, even as there's already news about casting for the fourth wave of Amazon pilots. At this rate, they may be ordering some shows before a word's even been written, and traveling back...

Red Oaks Comedy Pilot Teams Steven Soderbergh With David Gordon Green, Announces Cast
Red Oaks seems like it could definitely be my type of jam. A comedy set in 1985 at a country club in New Jersey? This has enough shades of Caddyshack to pique my interest. Of course it doesn't hurt that the show will be produced by Steven Soderbergh or that the pilot will be directed by David Gordon Green (Eastbound & Down). Red Oaks is gearing up to shoot as a pilot for Amazon (who are still implementing their voting policy when it comes to determining what gets picked up to series). And now the cast has been announced. Red Oaks stars Craig Roberts (Submarine) as David Myers, a college student who’s an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club in suburban New Jersey in 1985. Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Richard Kind (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Oliver Cooper (Californication), Gage Golightly (MTV’s Teen Wolf) and...

What If Your Hangover Had An Apprentice?
Josh Meyers
In case you missed it, Above Average has been knocking it out of the park with their five part web series 'Charles, Your Hangover' where the worst part of drinking becomes an anthropomorphic guy in a dashing suit. In the final episode of what is apparently the first season (!), Josh Meyers guest stars as Charles new apprentice. Turns out making you miserable is hard work. Greatest Series Finales: That ’70s Show’s “That ’70s Finale” keeps things simple in memorable episodes
That ‘70s Show Season 8, Episode 21, “Love of My Life” & Season 8, Episode 22, “That ‘70s Finale”

Directed by David Trainer

Written by Greg Mettler

Original Airdate: May 18, 2006 on Fox

In this decade it’s extremely difficult to find a sitcom that is as perfect as That ‘70s Show was. This show was, and still is, one of the best coming of age/high school set sitcoms (after Freaks and Geeks of course). It’s probably not the first finale that comes to mind when thinking about greatest television finales; but for me it’s way up there.

With good vibes, brilliant writing, and excellent characters that actually evolve That ‘70s Show is, to me, the ideal sitcom. What starts off as a comedy centered on the ‘70s, with a boy with mistaken ideals and a lack of confidence, soon turns into a series of memories, with six characters who weren’t adults...
