Rift (2011)
Empire Recap: Get Rich or Try Dynasty
Rift (2011)
Like the wide white lapels of Cookie’s Chanel-plaid jumpsuit, it’s the “Are you kidding me?” details that make Empire so ridiculously delicious.

A hard-charging prosecutor shows up to court with a La Perla bra pushing her cleavage higher than a Patti Labelle glory note. A guy named Thirsty (!) — with a law degree from the University of Guam (!!) — lands a job defending one of the richest and most powerful men in music. And not even Fox’s own highly paid American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez is safe from the vicious tongue of the Lyon family matriarch.

Ranked: Every Summer Movie Season Since 1980 - Part 2
We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.

2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.

Indie Filmmaker James Balsamo Talks Mutants, B-Movies and More for Catch of the Day
James Balsamo carries a torch for indie filmmakers. He is truly devoted to his craft, and his newest release, Catch of the Day, is a great example of his work. Balsamo recently sat down with Dread Central to talk about his project.

Catch of the Day is far from your traditional horror film. It's truly a genre-bender with lots of comedy mixed with plenty of gore. Balsamo talked about this blending of styles. "Catch of the Day is a buddy cop comedy meets mutant fish people," Balsamo said.

"This is my strangest film to date; it features real car explosions, aquatic mutants, a mad scientist, and beautiful big-breasted bikini babes. This was an awesome project to film. I did all my own stunts in the film and drove a car through a wall. I don't want to give away all the action. You'll have to get your copy at AcidBathProductions.

Exclusive: Adam 8 Filmmaker Tells How a “Someday” Idea Becomes a Sci-Fi Feature Film
Editor’s Note: I met Sean Williams at Comic-Con’s Hall H between panels on the first day of the Con this past July, chatting as people do. It turns out that Sean is a filmmaker, and he’s working on a sci-fi project – travel to another planet! strong women! – that sounds really great.

Last week Sean let me know that he was ready to start “officially” talking about the project, and wanted to know what I’d like to know. I told him I wanted to know, basically, everything. How the project got started, who’s involved, where he is in the process, etc. What follows is the narrative he wrote up on the spot on his phone and sent to me via Facebook Messenger in response. One long narrative that was completely engaging. He even copied and inserted biographies as he went along. It’s no wonder the man has won writing awards.

Serbian films shine at Karlovy Vary Works In Progress
Central and Eastern European filmmakers presented 19 projects at various stages of production at Karlovy Vary’s annual Works in Progress initiative.

The popular industry programme at Kviff is in its ninth year, and past films shown as Works In Progress include I Am, Lunacy, Katyn, Tricks, Alois Nebel and My Dog Killer, among many others.

This year’s selection included a standout pitch for The Disobedient [pictured], a Serbian coming-of-age road movie about two 24-year-olds from Tilva Ros producers Mina Djukic (who will direct) and Nikola Lezaic. The film is now in post for autumn delivery after wrapping its shoot in September 2012.

Another promising Serbian title, of a very different flavour, was the crowdpleasing dark comedy Monument to Michael Jackson (working title). The film will be ready to launch this autumn and the footage shown got the day’s only laughs out of the industry-heavy crowd. The film is a co-production with Macedonia and Germany.

What TV Show or Movie Would You Remake?
Hollywood loves to remake, reboot and revisit concepts that have been hits in the past. Right now, you can go to your local movieplex and choose between new versions of Fright Night, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Conan the Barbarian or The Smurfs. Meanwhile, this fall you'll be able to tune in to Hawaii 5-o, Prime Suspect or Charlie's Angels on TV.

While there's a lot of remake fatigue out there, there's always the rare project that feels like its worth revisiting. Thus, the topic of discussion in the Ae breakroom this week has been, Is there an older movie or TV show you'd be excited to see a remake for?

Ed Kennedy

Well, you didn't specify television or film, so I'm going with a TV show I miss. I want to see a new version of The Greatest American Hero. There was something so accessible about having the accidental super hero,...

Snap Judgments: Smash, Prime Suspect, The Playboy Club, Grimm, Awake, The Firm, Whitney, Up All Night, Free Agents, Are You There Vodka? It’S Me Chelsea
Smash

According to the Official NBC Description: Smash is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire — to be a “Smash.” The series centers on a desire to create a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe — written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Christian Borle, Legally Blonde: The Musical) and Julia (Debra Messing, Will & Grace). Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband of many years, but her focus is torn when she has the opportunity to write another Broadway hit. A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty (Katharine McPhee, American Idol) — who is trying to find fame in the big city against all odds — and stage veteran (Megan Hilty, 9 to 5: The Musical), who...

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray: The King’s Speech, Rabbit Hole, Somewhere, Gulliver’s Travels, The Way Back, and More
This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. The King's Speech Approaching a story of monumental scope with charm and intimacy, The King's Speech is a finely crafted crowd-pleaser that plays fast and loose with history [1] but does so to convey a decidedly more human tale of finding one's inner strength in order to be heard. There's not a single surprising moment in the whole thing, as every element of the limply conventional narrative has been depicted in film on countless occasions — the movie of the week disorder, the reluctant leader, the unorthodox therapist/psychiatrist, etc. — but rarely have these humdrum plot mechanics been handled with such authority and wit. The acting is superb across the board, with Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush marvelously portraying...

Megamind Review
While DreamWorks Animation doesn’t typically contend with rival studio Pixar’s knack for character development and story, Megamind is one instance where style wins out over substance just enough to allow a modest recommendation. At least, that endorsement stands if one is viewing the 3D presentation.

In the opening sequence, alien infants (and instant rivals) Megamind (voiced by Will Ferrell) and Metro Man (Brad Pitt) crash land on Earth where their lives diverge on wildly different tangents. Metro Man is raised in splendor and becomes a flying hero to the citizens of Metro City. By contrast, the blue-tinged title character grows up in a prison, developing unusual speech patterns, like pronouncing the city’s name in a manner similar to the word atrocity. Ostracized by his peers, the super-villain’s only friend is Minion (David Cross), who, oddly enough, is little more than a fish swimming in a bowl atop a mechanized gorilla suit,...

Gay Battle Royale 2010! Kish Vs. LuRe: Help Crown the Ultimate Daytime Couple!
Godzilla vs. Mothra, Krystle vs. Alexis, Tiffany vs. Debbie Gibson, Sarah Palin vs. Sanity. Some of the greatest rivalries in history, and now we can add one more.

The last year saw two wildly popular gay couples bring much-needed flavor to daytime, and even though Tptb on both shows ended up fumbling their stories, One Life to Live's Kish (Kyle and Oliver) and As The World Turns' LuRe (Luke and Reid) left an indelible impression on our lives.

But now that it's all over and the dust has cleared, which couple came out on top?

We studied many aspects of both couples, consulted with relationship experts, asked Dr. Phil his opinion (and laughed a lot) and finally said "to hell with that" and came up with some fun comparisons instead.

You're probably wondering why Nuke (Noah and Luke) isn't included. Unfortunately we had to disqualify them due to...
