The Sarajevo Film Festival will debut 15 feature films across its four competition strands during its 2025 edition, running from August 15 to 22.

A total of 50 films will compete for the festival’s Heart of Sarajevo awards. The festival’s four competition sections for feature, documentary, short, and student films will also screen six international, 28 regional, and two national premieres.

Announcing today’s batch of titles, Sarajevo Creative Director Izeta Građević, said: “The competition programs of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival bring together filmmakers who, each from their own perspective and in various film formats and genres, explore how we live and how we survive within complex and unstable social frameworks. Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa is set to preside over this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival jury while Berlinale head Tricia Tuttle, actor Dragan Mićanović, writer-actor-director Emanuel Pârvu and writer-director Ena Sendijarević are all set as jury members.

Loznitsa has directed 28 documentaries and five feature films, including his Cannes competition debut title My Joy and Donbass, the latter of which earned him the Best Director Prize in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard strand. In addition to presiding over the jury, Loznitsa will present a retrospective of his work at Sarajevo.

Tuttle is currently director of the Berlin International Film Festival, which she has headed up since 2024. Prior to that, she was festival director of the BFI London Film Festival and BFI Flare: London Lgbtqia+ Film Festival. She also led the Directing Fiction program at Nfts.

Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa and Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle are among the members of the Competition Programme – Feature Film jury for the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival (August 15-22).

Loznitsa is president of the five-person jury, which also includes filmmaker Ena Sendijarevic, actor Dragan Micanovic and filmmaker Emanuel Parvu.

The jury will present the Heart of Sarajevo awards in the competition programme on Friday, August 22. Awards at last year’s festival included best feature film, director, actress and actor.

Loznitsa received an honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 2022 festival. His latest film Two Prosecutors debuted in Competition at Cannes in May.

Ukrainian director-writer Sergei Loznitsa will be president of the main jury of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, it was revealed Friday.

He’ll be joined by Serbian actor Dragan Mićanović, Romanian director, writer and actor Emanuel Pârvu, Bosnian-Dutch filmmaker and screenwriter Ena Sendijarević, and Berlinale festival director Tricia Tuttle.

The jury will select the winners of the Heart of Sarajevo awards in the feature film competition program. The winners will be revealed on Aug. 22 at the awards ceremony.

Loznitsa has directed 28 documentaries and five fiction films. His feature debut “My Joy” (2010) premiered in main competition in Cannes. He won the Fipresci prize at Cannes for “In the Fog” in 2012, and the best director prize of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section for “Donbass” in 2018.

Mićanović’s film and television credits include the local hit “Barking at the Stars” (1998), and the international productions “Rocknrolla” (2008) and “Coriolanus” (2011).

Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa (Two Prosecutors) will serve as the jury president for the 31st edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival next month.

The other members of the jury of the competition program – feature film are Serbian actor Dragan Mićanović, Romanian director, writer and actor Emanuel Pârvu, Bosnian-Dutch director and writer Ena Sendijarević, and Berlin International Film Festival director Tricia Tuttle, who previously ran the BFI London Film Festival.

“Loznitsa joins a rich constellation of film auteurs who have previously presided over the Sarajevo Film Festival jury in past editions,” organizers said on Friday. They inclyde Mike Leigh (2004), Jasmila Žbanić (2006), Jeremy Irons (2007), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2008), Ari Folman (2011), Danis Tanović (2013), Béla Tarr (2014), Michel Franco (2017), Asghar Farhadi (2018), Ruben Östlund (2019), Michel Hazanavicius (2020), Mia Wasikowska (2023), and Paul Schrader (2024).

The Sarajevo fest winners will be unveiled during the awards ceremony on Friday, Aug. 22.

The makers of the Oscar-nominated live action short The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent have reason both to celebrate and to mourn.

The film, which tells the true story of Tomo Buzov, a Croatian man who stood up for Bosnian Muslim passengers who were pulled from a train in 1993 in a horrifying act of ethnic cleansing, won Best Short Fiction Film Friday night at the César Awards in Paris, France’s equivalent of the Oscars. But only a day earlier, filmmakers learned that Buzov’s son – who had been instrumental in allowing the film to be made – died suddenly of a heart attack in Belgrade, Serbia. He was 52. Darko Buzov’s death came on the 32nd anniversary of his father’s heroic actions during the brutal civil war in the former Yugoslavia.

When Tomo Buzov boarded a train in Belgrade, Serbia the morning of February 27, 1993, on his way to visit his son in Montenegro, he had no way of knowing what lay in store for him or that his bravery would be remembered to this day.

As the train wound through newly independent Bosnia, it came to a sudden halt and was boarded by members of a Serbian militia. Heavily armed men went car by car demanding to know the ethnicity and religious identity of everyone on board.

The Oscar-contending drama The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent retells what happened on that train as war flared in the former Yugoslavia and old grievances fueled new atrocities. The film directed by Nebojša Slijepčević won the Palme d’Or for Short Film at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Exclusive: The creative team behind Canneseries competition show Operation Sabre wanted to tell a “bigger truth” through their drama about the assassination of Serbia’s first pro-democracy prime minister, an event that remains raw in the public psyche.

No undertaking to tell the story of the killing of Zoran Đinđić in 2003 had been taken via TV drama, they told Deadline in the week leading up to the Cannes confab, and so they wanted to use scripted narrative devices to go beyond just this single event for the show being distributed by German major Beta Films.

Beta Film has acquired international distribution rights to Serbian crime thriller “Operation Sabre” (“Sablja”) about the assassination of the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić.

The eight-hour series – selected for Canneseries’ Long Form Competition – is created and directed by Goran Stanković and Vladimir Tagić. The duo already collaborated on “Morning Changes Everything” and wrote the new show alongside Dejan Prćić, Maja Pelević and Marjan Alčevs.

Heading back to March 12, 2003, Stanković and Tagić show the aftermath of the killing that threw the whole country into chaos – only one year after the beginning of the trial against former president Slobodan Milošević, indicted in 1999 for war crimes.

Đinđić, who served as Pm from 2001, following a stint as mayor of Belgrade, advocated pro-democratic reforms. He was also one of the co-leaders of the opposition to Milošević’s administration.

Cleopatra Entertainment will release The Rift: Dark Side Of The Moon, a new horror/thriller about a team of Us and Serbian agents dispatched to an American military satellite crash site where all is not as it seems on November 28. Korea’s More In Group has launched sales on South Korea-Serbia-Slovenia co-production The Rift at Filmart.

Award-winning Serbian director Dejan Zecevic, whose latest feature was The Enemy, a horror film set in the aftermath of the Bosnian civil war, is currently in production with the sci-fi thriller.

The Rift stars American actor Ken Foree, who was in George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and Knightriders as well as the Robert Pattinson starrer Water for Elephants; Slovenian actress Katarina Cas, who was in The Wolf of Wall Street and Danny Collins; Swedish veteran Bo Svenson (The Great Waldo Pepper, Kill Bill, Vol. 2) and Serbian star Dragan Micanovic (Bad Company, Coriolanus).

As you can see from the very challenging names to spell in the cast, this film has an international flair. Some scenes were filmed in Montenegro and some in Serbia. As of this writing, this film is streaming on Netflix under the title “Killer Mermaid”. I tend to gravitate more towards “Nymph”, the films’ original title. It leaves a little more mystique and still lets the film hold on to that exotic flair I eluded to earlier.

If anyone remembers “She Creature”, it involved a killer mermaid as well. That’s the only other film that I know of that can be compared to this one. I liked it a lot,...

This movie looks fantastic. I will have to set aside some time to read Coriolanus. The way writer John Logan modernized the story in a war-torn setting looks good, Children of Men good. Since I haven’t read the play yet, I do not understand why the government would betray such a celebrated soldier as Caius Martius Coriolanus for. What did he do? I am also glad to see that the trailer’s producers did not give the reason away in the movie trailer.

The Weinstein Company announced release dates for seven of its upcoming projects, including one we haven't heard about in the past few years: Scary Movie 5. The studio has set an April 20, 2012 release date for the project, although no cast members have been announced. It was believed that David Zucker would direct the project years ago, although it isn't known if he is still on board. No plot details were revealed either, and it seems that The Weinstein Company is not going ahead with the franchise reboot plan which we reported on a few years back.

An appropriate October 26, 2012 release date was issued to Halloween 3D, which will be directed by Patrick Lussier and written by Todd Farmer. No other movies are scheduled for release on that date yet.

The studio also handed out release dates to a few potential Oscar-worthy titles, with Coriolanus opening on December 2, and The Iron Lady...

The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that it has acquired from Icon Entertainment International (Iei) U.S. rights and Pan Asian pay TV rights to Coriolanus, the feature directorial debut of Academy Award nominated actor Ralph Fiennes. A contemporary staging of Shakespeare's classic play about the titular Roman warrior, Coriolanus stars Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, Jessica Chastain and James Nesbitt.

Coriolanus will make its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival this Monday, February 14. TWC plans a 2011 release.

A dozen or so soldiers are sprawled in front of a communist-era block of flats in a factory town outside the Serbian capital, Belgrade. The building has seen better days, graffiti snaking the walls, brickwork crumbling. The soldiers are none too pretty, either: a mean-looking hairy crew in dirty uniforms. Up marches their general and grunts at them. Behind the general's bushy beard and mirrored sunglasses is the actor Gerard Butler, and the soldiers are extras playing his troops. As he stomps off, grinning, to start the day's filming in a nearby flat, one of them pulls out a sudoku book. Not so tough after all – but film sets, like wars, involve a lot of waiting around.

But none of the talent will be donning sandals or unsheathing swords in this adaption of Shakespeare's Roman tragedy. Update is billed as a political thriller and brings the story into a contemporary setting.

Eastwood Eyes J. Edgar Hoover Project: One of this year's sure-fire Oscar contenders is Clint Eastwood's Hereafter, merely because the name Eastwood is attached as director, and now we learn his next film is a biopic of controversial FBI director J. Edgar Hoover with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment. Oscar-winning Milk scripter, Dustin Lance Black, penned the screenplay based on Hoover, who was most recently depicted by Billy Crudup in Michael Mann's Public Enemies.

Hoover was instrumental in founding the FBI in 1935 and turned it into an efficient crime-fighting organization. He remained its director until his death in 1972, but his sculpted persona was already coming apart at the seams; he employed the FBI to harass political activists and used illegal methods to make secret files on leaders. Many biographies also assert the man was a closeted homosexual and cross-dresser. Speculation has it ending up at Warner Bros.

Treading heavily on universally recognizable material about an innocent man turned into a violent force by the dark-hearted people around him, "Wheels" (Tockovi) is a taut, blackly comic 1998 Yugoslav drama that rivals some of the best Tarantino-noir films of the decade. A natural for festivals and select-site engagements, it screened Saturday at the Freedom Film Festival in Santa Monica.

In his feature debut, Serbian screenwriter-director and former film critic Djordje Milosavljevic seems at times more inspired by "Key Largo" than "Pulp Fiction", while the wicked plot is worthy of a Luis Bunuel opus. Set mostly in a roadside motel/diner dubbed Wheels, the movie opens with lead Nemanya (Dragan Micanovic) driving in a soaking rain to his father's house. Out in the same part of the country, a serial killer is loose.

Nemanya has a flat tire, is briefly harassed by the cops and then gives a stranger a lift. When he gets to the motel, he's hungry and tired, but the reception he gets is gruff and unfriendly. With a gun mysteriously now in his possession, Nemanya is nonetheless caught with his defenses down by the motel owner and several male and female guests, who have decided that he is the serial killer.

"I am not a killer", he pleads -- but then weird things start to happen. The outcome of an instantaneous trial, with Nemanya tied up, does not go as planned. He gets free, but one person is accidentally killed in the process.

With the others acting unreasonable and hostile, he is backed into a corner. But he finds out soon enough that they are all shady characters with hidden agendas.

While some of the specific cultural aspects don't always translate well, such as one character's constant mispronouncing of common words, "Wheels" winds up to a explosive but not altogether downbeat climax. Not afraid of upping the body count and employing witty small talk about ancient epitaphs, Milosavljevic shows solid filmmaking skills, particularly working within the constraints of an obviously small budget.
