Kaya Scodelario was, until recently, one of those actors who has been around for decades and starred in multiple high-profile projects, but still many people don’t know about her. All of that changed with Guy Ritchie‘s Netflix series The Gentlemen, in which she stars as the iconic Susie Glass. The role of Susie was all Scodelario needed to break out in the mainstream and become a household name despite her previous high-profile role in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and The Maze Runner film trilogy. So, if you also loved Scodelario’s performance in The Gentlemen, here are the 10 best movies and TV shows starring Kaya Scodelario you shouldn’t miss out on.

Journey to the Center of Despair: ‘The Descent’ Has Lost None of Its Power After 20 Years
Image
The New York Times recently published the results of a poll of filmmakers, performers, and film enthusiasts of the Greatest Films of the 21st Century. At least so far of course. The “newspaper of record” then opened it up to a reader’s poll and naturally, a trend followed to post your ballot on social media. My allergy to that current form of the town square prevented me from partaking in this, but if I were to limit my personal picks to only the horror genre, a few titles come to mind. I won’t name them all here as they will distract from my purpose in writing this article, but the film I know would be perched at or near the top of my personal list is Neil Marshall’s claustrophobic masterpiece The Descent, which celebrates the 20th Anniversary of its UK release this month.

For me, The Descent...

The Descent Ending Explained: Can You Climb Out Of That Pit?
Image
"Six women go spelunking" doesn't necessarily read as a great logline for a horror movie, but Neil Marshall's "The Descent" takes that premise and crafts an unforgettable exercise in terror. As the saying goes, it's a B-movie with A+ filmmaking.

Being trapped underground combines two common fears, confinement and darkness, and in "The Descent," the heavy shadows only reinforce the claustrophobia. Marshall and his cinematographer Sam McCurdy chose to light the film's sets (a facsimile of a real cave system built and shot at Pinewood Studios) primarily with the characters' flashlights. Even color choices — some frames are filtered entirely red or green — are used diegetically from those lights or flares.

As the characters get deeper and deeper into the cave, darkness subsumes each and every frame. It needs to, for the whole reason a cave is a scary setting is because of what you can't see. And yet, Marshall...

Jayden Elijah Joins Victoria Pedretti, Josh Bonzie & West Duchovny In ‘Saint X’ Hulu Drama Series
Image
Exclusive: Jayden Elijah (School’s Out Forever) rounds out the lead cast of Saint X, joining Victoria Pedretti, Josh Bonzie and West Duchovny in Hulu’s eight-part series from writer Leila Gerstein and director Dee Rees.

Based on Alexis Schaitkin’s novel, Saint X is a psychological drama told via multiple timelines and perspectives that explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre. It’s a show about how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Elijah plays Edwin, a handsome and magnetically charming employee at the island’s resort who immediately captures Alison’s (Duchovny) attention. He harbors a healthy distrust of the rich white people he’s paid to serve and dreams of one day leaving the island for New York.

Gerstein (The Handmaid’s Tale) wrote the project and...

Oscar Kennedy, Alex Macqueen and director Oliver Milburn on the twisted thriller School’s Out Forever
Oliver Milburn
Don’t be fooled by the somewhat playful title of this Oliver Milburn production, as School’s Out Forever is a dark and twisted endeavour, with a Lord of the Flies element to the narrative, and a scarily relevant theme that ties all too well into the world we currently inhabit. To mark the film’s release, on digital download from today and on DVD and Blu-ray from April 12th, we had the pleasure of speaking to the aforementioned writer/director, as well as two of the leading stars, Oscar Kennedy and Alex Macqueen. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety, as we discuss the themes of the movie, the pandemic and we look back over teacher that made an impression on them – perhaps more so than those in the movie manage…

Balthazar Getty in Lord of the Flies (1990)
School's Out Forever review – gloriously gory adaptation of YA sci-fi horror
Balthazar Getty in Lord of the Flies (1990)
Lord of the Flies meets The Road in this ruthless, thrilling romp about posh boarding school kids fighting a deadly virus

Adapted from a trilogy of young adult books by Scott K Andrews, that forms part of the “shared world” Afterblight Chronicles series, this gory British boys’ school-set sci-fi posits a deadly virus that swiftly kills almost everyone everywhere except those with a particular blood type. If The Lord of the Flies crossed with The Road and a dash of Tom Brown’s School Days sounds like your bag of blood, than this ruthless romp will be a kick in the head.

Director Oliver Milburn, who has made a bunch of horror-themed shorts and one feature (The Harsh Light of Day), has a real knack for staging action and coaxing sincere, punchy performances from his mostly young cast. Much of the story is seen through the eyes of Lee, one...

Brian Robbins in The Shaggy Dog (2006)
According to Deadline, E! has picked up its very first scripted series (well, if you don't count any of the Kardashian-centric shows). "The Royals" is a one-hour drama about a fictional bunch of British royals set in modern-day London. The show is supposed to be framed by the story of "Hamlet" and capture the "regal opulense" of the British monarchy. Produced by Brian Robbins and Joe Davola, the show was created by "One Tree Hill"'s Mark Schwann, who wrote and directed "The Royals." E! is clearly going whole hog with "The Royals," which will be shot in Great Britain. The show stars Elizabeth Hurley, Vincent Regan, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, Jake Maskall, Ukweli Roach and Oliver Milburn. The story centers on Prince Liam (Moseley), who moves up a notch in the pecking order after his brother is killed in a military training accident. Liam loves a young American woman,...

Elizabeth Hurley and William Moseley in The Royals (2015)
E! Orders Drama ‘The Royals’ As First Scripted Series
Elizabeth Hurley and William Moseley in The Royals (2015)
E! is making a regal entry into scripted programming. The network has picked up one of its first two scripted pilots, The Royals starring Elizabeth Hurley, to series. The one-hour drama, about a fictional British Royal family set in modern London that is informed by the regal opulence of the British monarchy and framed by Shakespeare’s Hamlet, hails from Lionsgate and a trio of One Tree Hill alums. Oth creator Mark Schwahn wrote and directed Royals, which he is executive producing with Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. Getting reality focused E! into the scripted space had been a priority for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment topper Bonnie Hammer. Sibling cable channel Bravo had been put on a similar path and just greenlighted its first scripted series, Girlfriends’ Guide To Divorce. E!’s second pilot, musical drama Songbyrd, remains in contention. “The Royals will offer a fictional look behind the very public...

Gorgeous, Atmospheric Trailer For Andrea Arnold’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
After breaking out with the excellent coming-of-age tale Fish Tank, Andrea Arnold headed back in time to a literary classic for her next feature. Wuthering Heights features mostly unknowns among its cast of Kaya Scodelario, James Howson, Solomon Glave, Shannon Beer, Steve Evets, Oliver Milburn and with Oscilloscope picking it up for a fall release, we’ve got the first trailer today.

We just included it as one of the best fall films we’ve already seen and this trailer confirms the gorgeous world Arnold has captured. Shot in full frame, back at Tiff we said she “paints this world with a deft touch, crafting tightly focused close-ups to convey emotion rather than words. Establishing shots only open wide a handful of times, instead opting for a beetle crawling through the grass or a spiderweb oscillating in the cold wind. These little touches build the world more than any sort...

Australian Poster For ‘Wuthering Heights’ Returns Your Gaze; ‘The Wolverine’ One-Sheet Claws Forward With New Concept Art
Director Andrea Arnold isn’t one to shy away from ill-fated romance, no matter how unsettling it may be — consider her violent love story Bellflower, or the creepy interplay of Fish Tank — o it makes sense that she would take on the mother of all bad relationships: Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.

The bleak novel has seen many adaptations, but if our review promises anything, it’s that Arnold’s beautiful visuals make the story worth revisiting. A new Australian poster for last year’s Tiff selection reinforces that emphasis on pleasing aesthetics, as it presents an arresting portrait of lead actress Kaya Scodelario.

It can be seen below:

Synopsis: A poor boy of unknown origins is rescued from poverty and taken in by the Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy.

Wuthering Heights also stars James Howson, Steve Evets, Oliver Milburn and Nicola Burley.

Review: The Harsh Light Of Day
On the one hand, we're going to have to be cruel here. There are first-time directors who rocket straight to the top of the heap with the skills of someone twice their age... and then there's the rest of them. On the strength of low-budget vampire flick The Harsh Light of Day, Oliver Milburn is over with the rest of them, way back in the cheap seats. Let's be blunt; technically much of this is tacky, amateurish stuff, with Milburn's editing, visuals and general direction largely mediocre. Anyone who's seen more than a handful of recent vampire films will get exactly where this one's headed.Yet on the other hand, whisper it softly, but shock, horror - as a piece of storytelling The Harsh Light of...

First Set of Character Stills From Andrea Arnold’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
Forget The Avengers, these are the best character stills of the week. One of my favorite films from Toronto this year was Fish Tank director Andrea Arnold‘s adaptation of Wuthering Heights. We’ve gotten a few stills, clips and a UK trailer, but today Empire has premiered a set of character stills from the film. They feature the cast including James Howson, Kaya Scodelario, Steve Evets, Oliver Milburn and Nicola Burley, some portraying the characters at different ages. Check them out below followed by the UK trailer if you missed it. One can read my glowing review of the film at the link.

Synopsis:

A poor young English boy named Heathcliff (Howson) is taken in by the wealthy Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy (Scodelario).

Wuthering Heights (2011) Teaser Trailer: Andrea Arnold, James Howson
Wuthering Heights Trailer. Andrea Arnold‘s Wuthering Heights (2011) teaser trailer stars James Howson, Kaya Scodelario, Oliver Milburn, James Northcote, and Amy Wren. Wuthering Heights‘ plot synopsis: “A poor young English boy named Heathcliff is taken in by the wealthy Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy. Based on the classic novel by Emily Bronte.”

The picture premiered at Venice and played Tiff, where it was picked up by Oscilloscope for Us distribution.

Kaya Scodelario and James Howson play the adult versions of Cathy and Heathcliff in this incarnation of the story, with Shannon Beer and Solomon Glave playing the younger versions of the characters. Notably, Heathcliff is here portrayed by black actors, leading to some consternation among purists but also possibly adding a new layer to the character’s history.

The dominant performance, however, looks like it might be from the camera, wielded by Robbie Ryan,...

UK Trailer For Andrea Arnold’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
One of my favorite films at Tiff this year was Andrea Arnold‘s Fish Tank follow-up Wuthering Heights. The adaptation of Emily Brontë‘s classic was picked up by Oscilloscope Pictures for a 2012 release, but it will hit UK theaters by the end of the year. After posting four minutes of clips, The Guardian has debuted the first trailer.

It is quite representative of the film with gorgeous visuals, little dialogue and retaining the full-frame aspect ratio. It even retains a similar structure, as we see cuts to bugs crawling through the grass, one of her many transitional shots. One can read my review here and check out the trailer below.

Synopsis:

A poor young English boy named Heathcliff (Howson) is taken in by the wealthy Earnshaw family where he develops an intense relationship with his young foster sister, Cathy (Scodelario).

Watch: Four Minutes From Andrea Arnold’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ & Rachel Weisz In First ‘Deep Blue Sea’ Clip
We have the first look at footage for two highly anticipated festival titles. With Fish Tank being one of my favorite films from 2010, I’m greatly anticipated Andrea Arnold‘s Wuthering Heights. I wasn’t sure if the film, premiering soon at Venice Film Festival, would take on the verite style Arnold is known for (also seen in her drama Red Road), but with the first footage (from C7nema, via The Playlist) we now have an answer.

Her trademark style is indeed back and it looks gorgeous. Four clips can be seen below, but I only checked out the first in order to save the rest for viewing at Toronto in a week or so. Based on Emily Bronte‘s classic novel, the film stars James Howson as Heathcliff, as well as Kaya Scodelario, Steve Evets, Oliver Milburn and Nicola Burley. Check out the footage below and more photos here.
