‘The greatest performance I have ever seen’: ‘American Idol’ showstoppers round sends 4 contestants straight into the Top 24
Image
Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.

There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "Never Would Have Made It.

Russia-born Tycoon Tries “Land Grab” of WME Clients In Legal Battle Over Img Artists
Image
A legal brawl has broken out between mogul Alexander Shustorovich and Img Talent, whose affiliate WME faces the prospect of losing a portion of its music roster as part of a forced sale of the premier classical music management firm Img Artists.

A company owned by the Russia-born U.S. citizen has filed a lawsuit looking to enforce an arbitration ruling that holds that Img Talent must sell its stake in Img Artists to Shustorovich. The deal includes a noncompete that would allegedly bar Endeavor-owned WME from business related to classical, jazz or world music and festivals for three years. Img Talent, also owned by Endeavor, has refused to sign the 2021 purchase agreement.

In arbitration decided last year, it was found that the noncompete is “unquestionably a term or condition” of the deal and “must be complied with” by Img Talent and its affiliates.

“If the artists at WME are up for grabs,...

Luis Miguel was a big part of my life these past 5 years and it was an amazing experience, At Midnight is its own thing. It’s a love letter to Mexico, as well. There aren’t enough rom-coms shot there in the same vein as Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight in Paris. Mexico is a character in this film and you’ll see it through the eyes of our director Jonah (Feingold).”

At Midnight centers around Alejandro (Boneta), an ambitious hotel manager, and Sophie (Barbaro) a movie star navigating the politics of Hollywood.

Leila Cobo on Dedicating Her Career to Elevating Latin Music at Billboard
Image
It's been fascinating to see how Latin music - reggaeton in particular - has emerged over the years to become mainstream. But decades before Latin music genres reached global domination and became heavily covered in the media, Billboard was already measuring it using the success of songs, albums, and artists and calculating sales distribution data and radio airplay. Thirty years ago, Billboard Latin Music Week was created, which began as a one-day conference and eventually evolved into a week of conferences in Miami with Latin music artists and executives and eventually accompanied by the Billboard Latin Music Awards show. Leila Cobo, VP of Latin content for Billboard, remembers exactly how it all began. The Latin music journalist and author has played a pivotal role in growing Billboard's Latin presence and also programs the Billboard Latin Music Conference that takes place every year.

‘Money Heist’ Star Alvaro Morte to Headline ‘Talkies,’ from ‘Luis Miguel’ Producer Gato Grande (Exclusive)
Image
“Money Heist” star Alvaro Morte is attached to star in “Talkies,” from “Luis Miguel” producer Gato Grande, which will be presented at the Iberseries inaugural Co-Production & Financing Forum on Sept. 28.

“Talkies” covers the period between 1930 and 1934, an unusual time when foreign-language versions were shot on the same sets where the original English-language films were shot before dubbing or sub-titling technology existed.

Helmed by “Money Heist” director Alex Rodrigo and co-developed with Catalonia’s Veranda (“Merli”), the 8 x 45” series centers on the making of Spanish-language ‘talkies’ some of which, like the Spanish version of Bela Lugosi’s “Dracula,” were considered far superior. Morte will play the actor Carlos Villarias, who took on the Dracula role in the Spanish version.

“We’ve got 40 covered and are seeking partners from the U.S., Spain and/or Latin America to complete the financing,” said Maximiliano “Tate” Sanguine, VP of development & creative production at Gato Grande/MGM.

Below, the final cut, and some details about the projects and their female producers, where known:

“Fan,” (Mariela di Naro, Argentina)

Macarena Achaga Joins Andy Garcia In Warner Bros. ‘Father Of The Bride’ Pic For HBO Max With Plan B Producing
Image
Exclusive: Macarena Achaga is set to join Andy Garcia in the Father of the Bride reboot, which Gaz Alazraki has been set to helm. The pic will revolve around a Cuban-American family, with Matt Lopez penning the script.

The film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film. While this will mark the third iteration of the story, sources say this will be more in the vein of the original Spencer Tracy pic and not the Steve Martin franchise from the 1990s.

Achaga will be playing the stepmother to the groom. Gloria Estefan is set to play Garcia’s wife, with Adria Arjona tapped to play the bride-to-be. Diego Boneta is on board to play the groom.

Why ‘Luis Miguel’ Storytelling Breaks Ground for Netflix and MGM
Image
It’s always hard to recount and reveal truths about the life of a widely-recognized celebrity in a biopic format. It’s another challenge altogether when that celebrity is Luis Miguel, colloquially known as “The Sun of Mexico.”

Carla González Vargas, showrunner of “Luis Miguel: La Serie” on Netflix and president of Gato Grande productions, a joint venture with MGM Studios, had experience adapting the life of controversial figures, having worked in journalism and then written a book on Woody Allen in 2004. But she hadn’t tackled someone as beloved and Luis Miguel for a platform as broad as Netflix. Diego Boneto plays the title role.

Following the April 18 debut of “Luis Miguel: La serie” Season 2 (which marks the titular star’s real birthdate), González Vargas spoke with Variety about tapping into Spanish-language biopic fever. She also addressed the challenges of portraying the Mexican legend’s well-recorded public and tumultuous private life,...

New on Netflix: April 2021 Releases
Image
Netflix is the king of the streaming world until proven otherwise. But in recent months the streamer’s lists of new releases have looked relatively sparse as competing media conglomerates remove their titles from Netflix’s library. With its list of new releases for April 2021, however, Netflix appears to have its original production machine operating at high capacity once again.

There are plenty of intriguing Netflix original series and films this month. The one that appears to have the highest blockbuster potential though is the series Shadow and Bone on April 23. Shadow and Bone is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha-verse trilogy and should bring another compelling sci-fi/fantasy universe to the streaming world.

The movie is one highlight in Netflix’s first announcement of a production-distribution slate focused entirely on Spanish original movies. The eight titles it profiles that are moving into production or set for release in 2021 and 2022 are a sign of Netflix ramping up its production of Spanish movies as part of its bet on Spanish scripted TV and movies, with Spain punching above its weight in the number of Netflix originals compared to Spanish subscribers. The Netflix slate highlights:

“Las niñas de cristal”

Alison Parker in “Money Heist” and Guzmán’s fated sister Marina in “Elite,” in “Las niñas de cristal” Pedraza plays Irene, a classical ballet dancer...
