Beta Film has sold historical epic “Rise of the Raven” to multiple territories ahead of its North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Following the festival premiere, CBC will bring the 10-part series to Canadian audiences on their streaming channel CBC Gem from Sept. 19. Beta recently sold the miniseries to Italy’s public broadcaster Rai, which will air it next year.
Croatia’s Hrt, Telekom Deutschland in Germany, Slovakia’s Stvr, Blue TV in Switzerland, and Yes in Israel have already broadcast the drama this year, with Czech TV being the most recent to join this group. The show broke ratings records in Hungary on TV2 and it was a hit with young audiences in particular when it aired on Austria’s Orf and its streaming service.
“Rise of the Raven” tells the story of fearless army commander János Hunyadi (Gellért L. Kádár), who devotes his life to defending Europe against an Ottoman invasion.

Summer is (almost officially) here! That means the Fantasia International Film Festival is inching ever closer. This year, the festival, which was recently included on Dread Central’s best film festivals on earth, will celebrate its upcoming 29th edition from July 16 through August 3, 2025, and today, we’re excited to share the second wave of titles coming to this year’s festival, as well as the recipient of their Canadian Trailblazer Award.
First, the festival opens with Ari Aster’s latest feature film, Eddington, which our Managing Editor, Josh Korngut, gave five stars out of Cannes. The film begins in May of 2020 when a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

A festival so nice they announced it twice (with even more to come), the Fantasia International Film Festival returns to Montréal for its 29th edition, July 16 — August 3. Yes, the 16th, not the 17th. Since announcing the festival’s first wave of titles in early May, organizers have added a day to accommodate for the hundreds of features and shorts they’ll be showing this summer.
Leading the pack is Ari Aster’s fourth feature, “Eddington,” which will open the festival with a special screening. From A24, the modern Western — starring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal as candidates in a heated mayoral race — was met with generally warm reviews after its world premiere at Cannes. IndieWire’s David Ehrlich described the film as a “‘No Country for Old Men’ riff that hinges on mask mandates and the murder of George Floyd.” He praised Aster’s ambition, the timeliness of the material,...

One of the most eclectic lineups in genre cinema each year, Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival will celebrate its upcoming 29th edition this summer. Ahead of the festival, running July 16 through August 3, they’ve unveiled their second wave of titles, including three new films by Takashi Miike, Ari Aster’s Eddington, the Sundance hits Together and Lurker, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s Reflection in a Dead Diamond, and more.
Rory O’Connor said in his Cannes review of Eddington, “In Eddington, Ari Aster’s latest doom spiral, the proposed building of a data center in nowhere New Mexico provides the catalyst for a long-overdue psychological breakdown. Bullet to Beijing is a 1995 made-for-television film that sees Michael Caine reprising his iconic role as Harry Palmer, the unorthodox and disillusioned British spy first introduced in Len Deighton’s novels and brought to life in the 1965 film The Ipcress File. Directed by George Mihalka, Bullet to Beijing attempts to rekindle the charm and suspense of the original series, but it does so with mixed results.
The story follows Harry Palmer, now older and more cynical, as he finds himself forcibly retired from the British Secret Service. The company behind reboots of horror classics like Halloween and The Exorcist is reportedly moving forward on a reboot of the 1981 Canadian slasher film My Bloody Valentine, according to a Bloody Disgusting exclusive.
Directed by George Mihalka and written by John Beaird, My Bloody Valentine received mixed reviews from critics upon its initial release but has since garnered a devoted cult following, enough to warrant a remake in 2009 that starred Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, and Kerr Smith.
Surprisingly, though, My Bloody Valentine is one horror IP that hasn't been revisited time and time again...until now. Blumhouse aims to change that and revive the killer pickaxe-wielding miner who murders for a new movie.
Despite the news from Bloody Disgusting, little is known about the potential reboot except that Blumhouse is interested in making it.

Blumhouse plans to reboot My Bloody Valentine, a Canadian slasher film from 1981. The original My Bloody Valentine from 1981 was criticized but gained favor over time, while the 2009 3D remake earned mixed reviews. Blumhouse has faced criticism following recent flops like Halloween Ends, but hopes upcoming projects will win back horror fans' trust.
It appears as if Blumhouse is looking to reboot yet another classic horror film, this time by way of the 1981 Canadian slasher flick, My Bloody Valentine. The original cult-classic was directed by George Mihalka and earned $5.7 million dollars at the box office against a budget of just $2.3 million. A reboot directed by Patrick Lussier was released in 2009 titled My Bloody Valentine 3D, which would go on to rake in over $100 million against its measly budget of only $14 million dollars.
As per Bloody Disgusting, things are in the development stages right now for a My Bloody Valentine reboot. Theres no word on story details,...

Blumhouse Productions has another horror franchise in mind to take on next. This follows the company developing a trilogy of Halloween films and last year's The Exorcist: Believer.
Per Bloody Disgusting, it's been reported that Blumhouse will next reboot My Bloody Valentine. No details about the reboot at Blumhouse have been revealed beyond that it's in the works, though it could potentially be a legacy sequel to the original film, given how that's been the strategy taken with Halloween and The Exorcist. However, Blumhouse also released a Black Christmas remake in 2019, and outside of slasher films, the company will also soon reboot The Blair Witch Project.
Related Mike Flanagan Eyed to Direct Next Exorcist Sequel for Blumhouse Following the departure of David Gordon Green, Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan is being eyed to direct Blumhouse's next Exorcist sequel.
There are two previous installments of the My Bloody Valentine franchise.

Last month, we learned that Lionsgate and Blumhouse Productions have made a multi-picture pact that will see Blumhouse reimagining horror classics from the Lionsgate library, with the first project on that slate being the development and production of a reboot of The Blair Witch Project. Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting have revealed that Blumhouse is already planning a reboot of another Lionsgate property: My Bloody Valentine! No further details have been shared.
Directed by George Mihalka from a screenplay by John Beaird (and a story by Stephen Miller), the original My Bloody Valentine was released in 1981 and has the following synopsis: Twenty years ago, a tragic accident in a mine on St. Valentine’s Day took the lives of five miners. The disaster occurred while supervisors left their posts to attend the town’s annual Valentine’s Day dance. The only survivor, Harry Warden, was confined to a mental institution after the ordeal.

Released in 1981, the original Canadian slasher classic My Bloody Valentine spawned a Hollywood remake (My Bloody Valentine 3D) in 2009, but it’s now been 15 years since we’ve heard a peep from the franchise about a sadistic and bloodthirsty miner with a pick(axe) to grind. But as “The Ballad of Harry Warden” once told us, it’s a curse that will live on and on…
And the My Bloody Valentine franchise does indeed plan to live on, as Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that Blumhouse is developing a brand new My Bloody Valentine movie.
Stay tuned for more information as we learn it.

European giant Beta Film, known for ambitious titles such as “Babylon Berlin” and “The Swarm,” has shared with Variety in exclusivity a first-look picture of 1o-part series “Rise of the Raven,” which it hails as “one of the most epic European TV productions of all time.”
“Rise of the Raven” weighs in as a passion project of Hungarian-born and Canada-based producer Robert Lantos, behind “Sunshine,” “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Barney’s Version,” “Eastern Promises” and “Crimes of the Future.”
A highlight at Beta Film’s showcase this Tuesday at the London TV Screenings, “Rise of the Raven” turns on the extraordinary feat of Hungarian army commander Janos Hunyadi, played by discovery Gellért L. Roses are red. Violets are blue. We hate Valentine’s Day. How about you?
Ok, “hate” is an overstatement. At the very least, capitalism’s annual ode to the big L-o-v-e is an excellent excuse to revisit our favorite rom-coms and dramatic love stories. From “The Notebook” and “Moonlight” to “Notting Hill” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” the best movies about the highs and lows of finding The One can bring smiles to our faces and tears to our eyes. Arguably, it’s these films that make the most compelling arguments for a holiday wholly dedicated to flowers, greeting cards, and other displays of chocolate-dipped devotion.
Still, Valentine’s Day draws ire for its materialistic center and vaguely exclusionary culture. More than ever, singles, couples, and so-called “situationships” are foregoing the traditional dinner-for-two and enjoying Galentine’s, Palentine’s, and other counter culture celebrations on or around February 14. Here is a list of some of the best. While a few of them are a bit obvious because we can’t skip on the classics, others will be harder to find titles that are absolutely worth looking for. Without further ado, here are our picks for the Best Slasher Movies Ever:
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Let’s start with the undisputed king, Mr. Wes Craven and his creation, the one and only Freddy Krueger. Now, why does this particular duo rule this sub-genre? Well, Craven established many rules with his take on the slasher and the...

Austria’s Orf Joins Big Budget Central Europe Drama Series ‘Rise Of The Raven’
The shoot for big-budget Central European drama Rise of the Raven (working title) is underway near Budapest in Hungary, with Austrian pubcaster Orf the latest to join the series as a co-producer. Produced by Robert Lantos, the multi-million dollar series is being billed as “the most epic Central European television production of all time.” It stars Hungary’s Gellért L. Kádár as Janos Hunyadi, the army commander who defeated the vast Ottoman troops in the Battle of Belgrade in 1456. Vivien Rujder plays his life partner Elizabeth Szilagyi in a widely international cast. Also featuring are Austria’s Laurence Rupp (Babarians), Cornelius Obonya (Maria Theresa), Murathan Muslu (Breaking Point), Czech actor Karel Roden, Serbia’s Rade Serbedzija and Italian actors Italy’s Francesco Acquaroli, Thomas Trabacchi (Studio Battaglia) and Elena Rusconi (6 Underground). Balázs Lengyel (HBO’s Golden Life) is showrunner and writer along with George Mihalka, Balázs Lovas, Zsófia Ruttkay, Attila Veres, and Bán Mór, whose best-selling series of novels the series is based on. Serendipity Point Films, Twin Media, Hg Media, Mr Film and Beta, which distributes the show, are the co-producers. TV2 will air it in Hungary and Slovenia, with Orf broadcasting it in neighboring Austria.
Germany’s Sat.1 Remakes Italian Format ‘Back To School’
German broadcaster Sat.1 has remade Mediaset Distribution’s Italian format Back to School. Local producer Cheerio Entertainment has produced the German show, titled Zurück in die Schule, ahead of a debut on August 24. German presenter Jörg Pilawa will host the primetime entertainment show. Back to School sees four celebrities face real elementary school exams, one they have prepared for during a summer camp with students taking on the role of no-nonsense teachers and another ‘surprise’ subject. Mediaset Group’s distribution arm launched the format at MipTV after it debuted in Italy on Italia 1 and secured an above average share. “Everyone likes the idea of mini-teachers having to do with celebrities in an entertaining reversion of roles. After lockdown and sad things continuing to happen, a show that reunites family and target groups of all ages for a good moment of relax and fun. I guess we really need it,” said Claudia Marra, who handles the format rights for Mediaset Distribution.

Principal photography is underway near Budapest on “Rise of the Raven,” an epic drama series produced by veteran Canadian producer Robert Lantos’ Serendipity Point Films (“Crimes of the Future”) and Beta Film (“Gomorrah”) that marks the most lavish TV production in Hungary’s history.
Adapted from author Bán Mór’s bestselling novels, the 10-episode series tells the story of the Hungarian warrior Janos Hunyadi, who defeated the Ottoman army in 1456 at the Battle of Belgrade, halting its march across Europe.
Lantos, whose producing credits include “The Sweet Hereafter,” “Johnny Mnemonic” and “Eastern Promises,” spoke exclusively with Variety about a passion project more than a decade in the making. He was joined by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning director Robert Dornhelm and Hungarian directors Attila Szász and Orsi Nagypal, who joined the conversation fresh off shooting an epic battle sequence outside Budapest.

In 1981, we were up to our eyeballs in slasher films. John Carpenter’s Halloween had kicked things off three years prior, Friday the 13th had continued the box office tidal wave the year before, and both studios and low-budget filmmakers were scrambling to become the next horror success story. Once the formula was established, it was easy to replicate, resulting in a slew of films that, while fun, are somewhat forgettable. But one slasher that stands apart from the pack (and should definitely not be forgotten) is George Mihalka’s My Bloody Valentine.
Twenty years ago in the small mining town of Valentine’s Bluffs, a horrible mining accident took place during the annual Valentine’s Day dance. Several miners perished, but one survived. By the time they pulled Harry Warden out of the wreckage, he was completely insane and was remanded to a mental health facility for treatment.

Just when you thought slasher movies couldn’t get any lower, My Bloody Valentine dug a mineshaft. A deep pit in the caverns of taste. Date movie? My Bloody Valentine was the antidote to Hallmark cards. The main suitor didn’t wear his heart on his sleeve; he bled it out with every candy in the box. Hence why critics weren’t so sweet on the slasher flick when it first came out in 1981, labeling it excessive and derivative.
Nevertheless, the movie has amassed a cult following, and did indeed add subtle innovations to the genre. Is the ‘80s horror offering the low-point of slashploitation or were the reviewers merely suffering overkill fatigue? Quentin Tarantino claims this is his favorite slasher flick, which could be used as an argument for either side.

George Mihalka's 1981 film My Bloody Valentine is widely regarded as one of the all-time best slasher films ever made. The film has not only been praised for its atmospheric setting and wildly inventive and highly gory death scenes, but also for its mysterious whodunit subplot. Of course, a 3D version of the film was remade in 2009 and received with similar fanfare and critical adoration.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired worldwide rights to G-Hey Kim’s horror film “Don’t Click,” starring Valter Skarsgard, Mark Koufos and Catherine Howard.
Skarsgard portrays 21-year-old Josh, who tries to convince his roommate and best friend, Zane (played by Koufos), to join him at a party. Zane declines the invitation, claiming he has to study, but instead surfs the web for porn. A sexually graphic pop-up catches Zane’s attention, and when Josh comes back to an empty apartment, Zane’s laptop is still open but there’s no sign of Zane — who passes out after the laptop starts flashing and wakes up in a dank, surreal cellar with no way out.
“Don’t Click” is based on Kim’s 2017 short film of the same name. The feature premiered in August at the U.K. horror festival FrightFest.
Gravitas will release “Don’t Click” in select theaters and on demand on Dec.

Ahead of the FrightFest World premiere of Don’t Click, director G-Hey Kim talks about the challenges of making her debut feature.
Your 2017 Don’T Click short was hugely successful on the festival circuit. Is that when you decided to expand it, or was that always the plan?
I never planned to extend my film because I never expected it to actually happen. Only a few short films have had the opportunity for a full feature version such as Saw (2004), Mama (2013) and Lights Out (2016). So I wasn’t expecting that my short film would ever get that chance. When I got a call from George Mihalka about creating a full length production of my film, I was very surprised and incredibly glad. From then on I began to think of my film as a full length feature
Was it difficult to think of ways to elongate the concept into feature length?...

Welcome to Valentine Bluffs, the little town with a big heart. Around those parts, though, that big heart might end up being stuffed inside a heart-shaped candy box by Harry Warden before February 14th is over and done with, but otherwise, it’s a great place to live.
As a kid, I only ever rented George Mihalka’s My Bloody Valentine once (for some dumb reason), and it was only until the remake was coming out in 2009 that I decided to rent it again, and was totally blown away, because 10-year-old Heather sure as hell didn’t appreciate just how great the original Mbv was and still is after all this time. One of those rare singular slashers that never made it into franchise territory, My Bloody Valentine is a pretty fantastic whodunit about a killer dressed up like a miner, similar to the M.O. of Harry Warden, a...

The love for 80s horror movies shall never die. On February 11, Scream Factory will release the much anticipated My Bloody Valentine [Collector's Edition]. Stacked with new bonus features including a new 4K scan and interviews with cast and crew, this is a collector's must-have.
Scream Factory has also addressed a long sought-after infamous deleted scene that fans have been clamoring for decades.
The "Harriet drillbit" kill scene was not found or included unfortunately. We looked and asked endlessly. It was not on the original negative and there was no workprint footage we could locate. Trust us, we love the movie just as much as you and we tried!
In My Bloody Valentine it's Valentine's Day and someone always loses their heart. Twenty years ago, this small town lost more than that. When supervisors abandoned their posts to attend the town's annual holiday dance, a tragedy claimed the lives of five miners. The sole survivor,...
