Wheel Of Fortune Contestant Nearly Loses $100,000, Causing Fans To Panic
Image
Wheel of Fortune is known for causing players and viewers at home to sweat, and in an episode that re-aired on July 21, a long-time viewer-turned-player nearly lost it all. Wheel of Fortune's set-up is basic: players have to call out letters to guess what the puzzle is trying to spell out. Contestants on the Ryan Seacrest-hosted game show can win thousands, and sometimes hundreds of thousands, of dollars if they walk away as the big winner.

During a recent episode that originally aired on October 28, 2024, a contestant named Brent Miller won big during the Bonus Round, but for a few tense seconds, fans weren't sure he'd be able to pull it off. TV Insider reported that Brent had 10 seconds to guess a clue about Food and Drinks, and at first, he seemed stumped.

However, with just four seconds to spare, Brent correctly guessed the phrase was "Hot Fudge Topping,...

Image
Brent Miller, from Pocahontas, Arkansas, won $120,704 on Wheel of Fortune after nearly giving fans heart attacks. His dramatic episode reaired on July 21, but first premiered on Monday, October 28. Miller spoke out about his win to his local news station. “The fact that I won, especially that amount of money, I’m very much still just kind of processing that. I guess all the adrenaline will settle in later and I’ll figure out what to do with it,” he told K8 News. With his winnings, he plans on paying off his student loans as well as other things he hadn’t decided on at the time. Miller also planned to take his sister on the trip to St. Lucia that he won because they “never get to travel by themselves.” The Wheel of Fortune contestant grew up watching the game show with his grandparents. “For me, it was something I really grew up with.

Norman Lear Celebrated for Pushing LGBTQ Storytelling Forward: “The Purest Curiosity About Mankind I’ve Ever Come Across”
Image
To kick off the inaugural Pride Live! Hollywood festival on Wednesday, a group of Norman Lear’s former collaborators and friends took part in a tribute to the TV icon, who broke boundaries in LGBTQ+ storytelling with his many shows.

Moderated by entertainment writer James Colucci, the panel — held at Emerson College’s L.A. campus — featured The Jeffersons showrunner Jay Moriarty; Sanford and Son and Fernwood 2 Nite writer Bob Iles; Mary Hartman, Marty Hartman creator Gail Parent; actresses Lynne Moody, Liz Torres and Isabella Gomez; One Day at a Time co-creator Mike Royce; Clean Slate co-creator Dan Ewen; author Greg Cope White; and Lear’s producing partner Brent Miller and longtime assistant Cindy Villa.

“I think that Norman is that rare magic that happens when a great humanist is also in charge of some shit, and Norman ended up in charge of some shit,” Ewen said of Lear’s...

‘Before We Forget’ Trailer: Juan Pablo Di Pace Makes Feature Debut with a Personal Ode to First Loves in Years-Spanning Queer Romance
Image
Actor turned writer and director Juan Pablo Di Pace is making his feature debut with a decades-spanning meta romance. The star co-directs “Before We Forget” with Andrés Pepe Estrada from a script he wrote; the iconic late Norman Lear, who died in 2023, is an executive producer.

“Before We Forget” is a staggeringly beautiful depiction of trying (and sometimes failing) to remember every detail of our first loves. Di Pace leads the film as Matias, an Argentine filmmaker grappling with an unfinished movie that was inspired by his friendship with a Swedish classmate he met at boarding school in 1997. As the logline teases, “their bond, defined by tenderness and fascination, is abruptly severed when Alexander (Oscar Morgan) is expelled, leaving young Matias (Santiago Madrussan) with a story of unspoken emotions. Twenty-five years later, Matias reopens Pandora’s box, coming face-to-face with Alexander (August Wittgenstein) once again. As life begins to imitate art,...

Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment Sets First Sales Acquisition With ‘Before We Forget’
Image
Exclusive: Twenty-Nine Palms Entertainment, the new London-based international sales and production company launched by Edoardo Bussi last month, has unveiled Before We Forget as its first global acquisition for its upcoming Cannes slate.

The nostalgic, coming-of-age story marks the feature directorial debut of Argentinian actor Juan Pablo Di Pace, and Andrés Pepe Estrada, who is best known as an award-winning editor on films such as Argentina, 1985 and Upon Open Sky).

Originally titled Duino, the Argentinian-Italian-u.S. co-production is lead produced by Di Pace’s Momento Films.

Laverne Cox Gives Powerful Speech Against Trump Agenda at Scad TVfest: ‘They Are Committed to Eradicating Trans People from Public Life’
Image
Laverne Cox got the Scad TVfest crowd to its feet on Friday evening, as the star delivered a powerful, emotional speech about the new Trump administration’s attack on trans rights, civil rights and destruction of regulations in order to enrich the billionaires now in office. “The system is rigged in favor of corporations, plutocrats, oligarchs, the wealthy,” she said. “It might not be the time for us to be able to rise up not only as trans people, but as working people, as people of color. People with the capacity for pregnancy, people who really just want to get a no fault divorce. And so many other things.

‘Who’s The Boss?’ Sequel, ‘Bosch’s J. Edgar Spinoff Not Going Forward At Amazon
Image
Amazon MGM Studios is not proceeding with the Untitled J. Edgar project, one of the Bosch spinoffs that had been in development at the studio. Meanwhile, Amazon Freevee is not moving forward with the Who’s the Boss? sequel starring Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano, which had been in the works at the streamer.

The Untitled J. Edgar project was on of two Bosch spinoffs announced in February 2023 as being in development at Amazon MGM. The other, which centers on Detective Renée Ballard, was picked up to series earlier this year with Maggie Q starring.

Larry Andries (Blue Bloods) was writing the script for the J. Edgar spinoff, which he executive produced with Michael Connelly, author of the Harry Bosch book series. Andries in March was charged with six felony counts of sexual assault.

One Day at a Time Cast to Reunite for Table Read of Unaired Season 4 Episodes and Reveal the Series Finale
Image
In 2017, Netflix rebooted the 1975 sitcom One Day at a Time, giving it a makeover and following three generations of a Latine family. The series faced not just one but two cancelations, but fans can finally find out how the series was supposed to end.

One Day at a Time tackled many serious subjects, despite its sitcom status. Similar to ABC's Black-ish, One Day a Time put the members of the family through different scenarios, sometimes humorous, that led to opportunities for growth, educating the viewer in the process. Netflix canceled the series after three seasons, and Pop took over and revived it in 2020, but the pandemic stopped production and the network decided to cancel it, despite its 99% Rotten Tomatoes score. Per Variety, the cast will reunite to table read the remaining three episodes, including the one that served as the series finale.

Norman Lear’s Longtime Producing Partner Brent Miller Reflects Fondly On How the Duo ‘Used’ Each Other
Image
Brent Miller first started working for Norman Lear in events, and helped him travel the Declaration of Independence around the country. That eventually led to Miller running Lear’s Act III Prods. company. And under their partnership, the company — based at Sony — roared back in a big way, with the critically acclaimed reboot of “One Day at a Time” and the Emmy-winning “Live in Front of a Studio Audience.” Lear died in December at 101. Here, timed to Lear’s first birthday since his passing (he would have been 102), Miller recounts a specific moment that stands out to him, which says everything you need to know about Lear.

It was a typical sunny morning in Beverly Hills and Norman Lear asked that I come over and enjoy some brunch on the back patio of his home overlooking the pool, prior to driving to our offices on the Sony lot. The menu,...

The ‘Maude’ Abortion Episode Wouldn’t Air Today — Norman Lear Tried, and ‘It Wasn’t Green Lit’
Image
Norman Lear was not a man to shy away from controversy. If anything, he sprinted toward it, knowing that doing so would help open people’s minds to pervasive American issues related to discrimination, human rights, and more. Through his landmark sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time” (twice!), and “Good Times” (also twice!), Lear helped American families address thorny political and social topics by bringing those circumstances into their living rooms every week.

But one episode has long stood out as his most controversial: “Maude’s Dilemma,” a two-part episode airing in the first season, wherein the lead character (played by Bea Arthur) decides to get an abortion. At the time, abortions were legal in the state of New York (where Maude and her family lived), but the Roe v. Wade verdict was still two months away. CBS was wary about...

Norman Lear Was Still Making TV a Week Before His Death
Image
Norman Lear was still active in developing television shows at age 101.

The television icon, who passed away Dec. 5 of natural causes, was in recent weeks working on his TV slate, including redeveloping a reboot of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman after TBS exited the scripted originals business and the cable network released the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

“He loved the slate and was excited to bring it to the world,” a source close to Lear says.

Schitt’s Creek alum Emily Hampshire remains attached to take on the role originally played by Louise Lasser as well as co-write and exec produce the live-action update. The comedy landed at TBS on Lear’s 99th birthday on July 27, 2021, after months in development at Sony Pictures Television, where Lear and Brent Miller’s Act III Productions remains based with an active overall deal.

Sony acquired rights to Lear’s TV library via its...

Remembering Norman Lear, Whose Legacy Is Even More Important to Protect at This Fragile Point in American History
Image
Norman Lear changed television. That, we know, is an absolute fact, and I’ll get to it in a moment. But what really saddens me at the news of Norman Lear’s death, at 101, is he won’t be here anymore to serve as a voice of reason as the United States continues to lose its mind.

Lear was a World War II hero who spent much of his life defending democracy via what he put on our television screens and also in his high-profile advocacy work. He often talked of what inspired him to be politically active: At 9 years old, Lear was tinkering with his radio when he discovered the bile spewing from anti-Semitic broadcaster Father Charles Coughlin over the airwaves.

“I think about it all the time,” Lear told me in 2019, when I spoke with him multiple times for a Variety cover (among the several times I had...

Norman Lear To Make Cameo Appearance In ‘Good Times’ Netflix Animated Series As TV Icon Leaves Slate Of Upcoming Projects Behind
Image
Hollywood may have lost a TV legend in Norman Lear, following his death on Tuesday at the age of 101, but fans will be able to spend a little more time with him as he is set to make a cameo appearance in the upcoming animated series Good Times, Deadline has learned exclusively.

The Netflix and Sony Picture Television comedy, which follows a new generation of the Evans family residing in one of the last remaining housing projects in Chicago, has yet to announce a release date but sources reveal they’re targeting a Summer 2024 premiere. Netflix and Spt declined comment.

Good Times is only one of several projects left behind by Lear who, at age 101, remained busy developing and producing new series through his production deal at Sony TV. In May, Netflix greenlighted the Lear EP-ed dramedy series The Corps, starring Vera Farmiga, Miles Heizer and Liam Oh, about a...

Jimmy Kimmel, Rob Reiner and All 5 Broadcast Networks Pay Tribute to Norman Lear: ‘A Titan of This Industry’
Image
Jimmy Kimmel, George Clooney and Quinta Brunson, among others, are mourning the death of Norman Lear, who died on Tuesday at 101.

Meanwhile, in a rare recognition of what Lear meant to the entire television industry, all five broadcast networks — CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox and The CW — will simulcast an on-air in memoriam card tonight at 8 p.m. Et to honor the late legendary TV writer and producer.

In addition to being confirmed by Variety, Lear’s death was announced Wednesday morning on his social media accounts.

“It is obviously silly to want more time with a person who outlived a whole century but losing Norman Lear, even at 101 years old, feels unfair. His bravery, integrity and unmatched moral compass were equaled by his kindness, empathy, and wit,” Kimmel said in a statement to Variety. “Even at 101, Norman cared as much about the future, our children, and planet or as anyone I have ever known.

Norman Lear: Emmy Voters Are Still Paying Attention to the 101-Year-Old Master
Image
This story about “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

Norman Lear has been winning Emmys for more than 50 years, so it makes perfect sense that he’s back in the race this year. His first two came in 1971 for his groundbreaking series “All in the Family,” while his fifth and sixth came in 2019 and 2020 for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” specials that included real-time reenactments of “All in the Family” episodes.

The last of those came when he was 98 years old, making him the oldest Emmy winner in history. So when Lear turned 100 in the summer of 2022, it made sense that ABC, the network that aired “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” would embrace the ensuing tribute special “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter,” and...
