He joined his father George Miles' jazz combo, the Bebops, at age 12.

As the Band of Gypsies were preparing for a New York gig in 1970, Buddy Miles reacted with rage when he observed Jimi Hendrix's mental state after the guitarist's drink had been spiked with a narcotic. The gig was soon abandoned and the group broke up.

He lived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as a boy and attended Axtell Park Junior High School there.
