‘The Last of Us’ Season 2: Pedro Pascal’s Joel Fate Wasn’t Surprising After HBO Brought Back ‘Game of Thrones’ Director
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!!!This article contians spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2!!

When HBO decided to bring back Mark Mylod, the director known for his standout work in shows like Game of Thrones and Succession, to helm the latest episode of The Last of Us Season 2, fans should have known that they were in for emotional devastation.

With a track record of turning character-driven tension into heartbreaking drama, Mylod’s return to the HBO fold was the perfect (and painful) setup for the show’s most gut-wrenching moment yet, the tragic fate of Joel Miller.

What happened to Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller in The Last of Us Season 2?

Set five years after the events of the first season, The Last of Us Season 2 finds Ellie and Joel living in Jackson, Wyoming. Their strained relationship and emotional distance add even more poignancy to what happens next.

Episode 2 of the second season,...

HBO’s The Last of Us Dramatizes A Controversial Death From The Game, And It’s Just As Brutal
Joel Miller
This post contains major spoilers for “The Last of Us Part II” and its HBO adaptation. You have been warned.

Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) is dead in HBO’s “The Last of Us.” This gut-punch of a narrative twist occurs as early as Episode 2 of the latest season, introducing a point of no return for every character involved. For those acquainted with “The Last of Us Part II” — Naughty Dog’s brilliant, controversial follow-up to 2013’s “The Last of Us” — Joel’s death feels like a dreaded inevitability, as it also takes place pretty early on in the game when you least expect it.

While nothing can mimic or eclipse the pit-in-your-stomach horror/shock evoked by Joel’s brutal murder in “Part II,” Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann’s adaptation pulls off this major moment to equally devastating effect. Although markedly distinct from the scene’s tonal atmosphere in “Part II,...

How The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 2 Changes The Game's Most Controversial Scene
Image
Major spoilers follow.

The final moments of Joel Miller's (Pedro Pascal) life were easier to watch for some, simply because it had been burned into "The Last of Us" fans' minds since 2020. This pivotal scene in which Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever) finally gets her revenge on her father's killer played out almost identically to how it was originally shown in "The Last of Us Part II," transforming this new character into someone to hate more than every type of infected running rabid. One key element that differs from what we've seen this week, however, is just who else is present during Joel's death.

With Dina (Isabela Merced) out cold from being injected with anesthetic, the only person left to see Joel shuffle off this mortal coil was Bella Ramsey's Ellie. It's a torturous scene, not simply because of the journey we've been on with these two characters...

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2: What’s Ahead for Pedro Pascal’s Joel and Will We See Him in the Future?
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!Joel meets his karma in The Last of Us S2!

For everyone who had been complaining that The Last of Us Season 2 was off to a slow start, got their unbelievable turn of events in episode 2, titled Through the Valley. In a storyline somewhat similar to that of Kathleen’s hunt for Henry, S2E2 saw Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby seeking vengeance from Pedro Pascal’s Joel, for her father’s murder.

Yes, you read that right (don’t act like a Cordyceps zombie), Joel is indeed dead. Beaten to a pulp by Abby, and stabbed through the neck with a broken golf club, the final shot of episode 2 featured Ellie, Dina, and Jesse dragging Joel’s body back to Jackson, Wyoming. So now, what’s next for Joel? Is Pedro Pascal done with The Last of Us, or will we see him in the future?

What happened...

The harsh world of ‘The Last of Us’ always cuts deep, delivering raw emotion that sticks with us. HBO’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s legendary video game series has us hooked with its gripping tales and complex characters. When Season 2 premiered, a heartbreaking twist hit hard, especially for those new to the story, sparking questions about whether Joel’s truly dead and if he’ll somehow return in this bleak, post-apocalyptic journey.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Recruited One Of HBO's Biggest Directors For That Devastating Second Episode
Image
This post contains major spoilers for "The Last of Us" season 2, episode 2.

The second season of "The Last of Us" just dropped its second episode, and HBO hired their own personal grim reaper to direct one of the most harrowing hours in recent TV memory.

Fans of the Naughty Dog video game series knew this bombshell was coming, but under the direction of Mark Mylod, a man who's helmed episodes of "Game of Thrones" and "Succession" (among other shows on the premium network), it was particularly brutal to watch the events of this episode. Not only did we see a massive assault from a veritable army of infected, violent, and starving cordyceps zombies on the protected human settlement in Jackson, Wyoming, but this is the episode where Joel Miller, the story's ostensible hero played by Pedro Pascal, is brutally murdered by Abby, a new-this-season character played by Kaitlyn Dever.

The Last Of Us Season 2's Most Jaw-Dropping Sequence Brings The Show To Game Of Thrones Territory
Image
Stop reading right now if you haven't watched the second episode of season 2 of "The Last of Us" — major spoilers lie ahead.

In the second episode of the sophomore season of "The Last of Us," something massive happens ... and I'm not talking about the major death that happens just before the end of the episode. What I am talking about is the assault on the protected fortress in Jackson, Wyoming where pretty much all of the show's main characters now live, including Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal), his surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey), Joel's brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) and Tommy's wife Maria (Rutina Wesley), and Ellie's friends (and newcomers in season 2) Dina and Jesse, played respectively by Isabela Merced and Young Mazino.

While Joel and Dina are out on a tracking mission, and Ellie and Jesse are also stranded out in the same snowstorm affecting the prior duo's visibility in the woods,...

The Last Of Us Season 2's First Major Death Is Pure, Pit-Of-Your-Stomach Horror
Image
If you're not up to date on "The Last of Us" — and specifically, if you haven't seen "Through the Valley," the second episode of season 2 — stop reading this right now. Massive, major, enormous spoilers lie ahead.

I haven't played "The Last of Us Part II," nor have I played the original game that made this Naughty Dog creation into a sensation. This is all to say that, when it comes to the huge character death that happens in "The Last of Us Part II," I was wholly unprepared to see it play out on screen, because I've never held the lives of Joel, Ellie, or Abby in my hands via controller. When it happened on my TV, I couldn't look away, no matter how desperately I wanted to.

The ordeal goes like this: Abby, a new character in season 2 of HBO's adaptation of "The Last of Us" played by Kaitlyn Dever,...

Image

Who Plays Seth In The Last Of Us Season 2
Image
This article contains a discussion of suicide.

This article contains spoilers for the season 2 premiere of "The Last of Us."

In the season 2 premiere of HBO's massive hit series "The Last of Us" — based on Naughty Dog's critically-acclaimed video game "The Last of Us Part II" — we reunite with Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and his surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey) five years after the first season concluded. They're living peacefully in the heavily protected settlement in Jackson, Wyoming. Though we don't know exactly why at first, there's considerable enmity between Joel and Ellie, despite the closeness of their relationship. As a result, both of them have been spending more time with Dina (Isabela Merced) — albeit separately — and during a party celebrating the new year, Dina and Ellie shared an unexpected moment ... and kiss.

That moment is unfortunately interrupted by a Jackson resident named Seth who owns the local bar.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Premiere Scene That Took A Whole Day To Shoot
Image
Don't attend your weekly session if you haven't watched "Future Days," the season 2 premiere of "The Last of Us." Spoilers lie ahead!

In the second season of "The Last of Us" — HBO's adaptation of Naughty Dog's beloved video game series — showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are introducing some characters who don't appear in the game, including Gail, a therapist living in the protected fortress of Jackson, Wyoming who's played by Emmy winner Catherine O'Hara. Gail isn't in the games, so what's her purpose in the series?

In the season 2 premiere, "Future Days," we see the typically taciturn Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) go to Gail's house, only to learn something very surprising: Joel is seeking treatment from Gail as he works through some mental health issues. According to O'Hara, Mazin and Druckmann gave her and Pascal room as performers ... and scheduled an entire day for Joel's therapy session. As...

Why The Last Of Us Star Kaitlyn Dever Didn't Have To Audition To Play Abby

The Last of Us Season 2 Premiere's Ratings Jump Compared to Series Launch Revealed
Image
The Last of UsSeason 2 hit a major milestone for the fan-favorite series. The premiere episode, titled "Future Days," which aired on April 13, saw a positive ratings jump for the popular HBO series.

Per Variety, the episode reached 5.3 million viewers at its peak, marking a 13% increase from the 4.7 million viewers who tuned in to the series premiere in 2023. These numbers come from the Nielsen measurements of linear viewers watching the series via cable access to HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery's internal data regarding the number of viewers who streamed the episode on Max.

Based on the hit Naughty Dog video game series of the same name, The Last of Us Season 1 premiered to rave reviews from critics and audiences. The series stars Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller, a middle-aged man trying to survive in the post-apocalyptic, cordyceps zombie-infested remains of the former United States. Is The Last of Us Season 2 Changing Even More With Joel and Ellie?
Image
The first episode of The Last of Us Season 2 was released yesterday and it featured a handful of deviations from the source material. While the showrunners aren’t concerned about making a one-on-one adaptation, they wanted to elevate and amplify the experience with a few creative changes. Fans of the games will likely criticize some of these changes, but these were not done without a good reason.

HBO released a new teaser for the following episodes, and some eagle-eyed fans caught an interesting still featuring both characters at a time that never occurred in the game. This could suggest that the show will make even more changes, or the showrunners could repeat the same mistake Naughty Dog years ago.

The Last Of US Season 2 Star Kaitlyn Dever On Abby's Surprising Debut & Chilling Revenge Vow - Spoilers

"Slowly. When we kill him, we kill him slowly."

As character introductions go, it doesn't get much more unnerving than Abby Anderson's debut in last night's season 2 premiere of The Last of Us. In a change to the Naughty Dog video game that's proven to be somewhat divisive, the show immediately explains why Abby is seeking revenge against the man who killed her father in the season 1 finale, Joel Miller.

Abby convinces her friends to help her track Joel down, but they decide to investigate a new faction (who will turn out to be the Washington Liberation Front/Wlf) first, and we don't see them again until the closing moments of "Future Days" when Abby's crew arrives to the outskirts of the Jackson settlement.

MCU Star Pedro Pascal Reveals High Fan Expectations Make Roles "Scary"
Image
Pedro Pascal has had a stellar line of work over the past few years as his popularity continues to grow. Initially, the actor had his fair share of fans and support when he took on roles in Game of Thrones, Narcos, and even the villain in Kingsman: The Golden Circle. However, Pascal has now skyrocketed in fame with career-defining performances as the titular character in The Mandalorian, and as Joel in HBO's adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us. As it turns out, Pascal is well aware of the expectations that come with playing such compelling characters in well-known franchises with dedicated fan bases, particularly now that he has a leading role in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal talked about his fears of not living up to what fans have come to expect from the characters he portrays. Despite being intimidating for him,...

Neil Druckmann Admits His Brutal Creative Process Which Explains That The Last of Us Part 2 Death
Image
The Last of Us is hailed as one of the best stories ever told in gaming by many, and fans became attached to its characters. Director Neil Druckmann struck gold with an original story about a post-apocalyptic world devoid of life and love, and Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson brought their A-game for their respective roles, but the director can only do so much to keep their characters interesting. All good things must end, and some fans felt Joel Miller’s demise in the controversial sequel was too soon and an indication that no one is safe.

GTA 5’s Trevor Wants to Return as the Sacrificial Lamb in GTA 6, But Rockstar Games Need a Clean Break
Image
GTA 6 is expected to be released later this year for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S; however, the gaming community is growing more impatient with the lack of information shared by the developers. While the world waits for an update, a veteran voice actor shared how he would like to give his iconic character a bloody and well-earned retirement.

GTA 6 Fans Don’t Need a Reminder of the Decade-Long Development Phase

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto games don’t necessarily rely on previous games to get players up to speed for the new story; however, some fans are holding out hope to see some protagonists get referenced or even a brief second cameo. While the odds of older characters like Franklin, Michael, and Trevor appearing in GTA 6 are low, Steven Ogg wouldn’t mind showing up to give himself a bloody farewell.

"I Can't Tell The Difference": Indiana Jones And The Great Circle Fans Debate On The Similarities Between Voice Actors
Image
No, that's not really Harrison Ford you're hearing in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - but you're not alone if you can't tell the difference. Although role originator Harrison Ford has portrayed the derring-do adventurer on screen as recently as 2023's The Dial of Destiny, he doesn't lend his voice to Lucasfilm and Machine Games' recent adaptation. Instead, the video game Indy is played by prolific voice actor Troy Baker, best known for portraying Joel Miller in The Last of Us, Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite, and Sam Drake in Uncharted, among many others.

Reddit user MixedMartialLaw recently shared a comparison of the two actors' work, prompting many players to comment on Baker's near-perfect recreation of Ford's performance. In a three-minute video, the original post juxtaposes similar lines from the Indiana Jones films and The Great Circle, allowing players to hear their tones, inflections, and pronunciations side by side.

The Last of Us and 4 other video game movies/shows coming in 2025

In perhaps a surprise twist that no one saw coming, video game adaptations are not complete failures anymore. Yes, we'll always have our Netflix's Resident Evil or Paramount+ Halo, but there have also been some successes.

In preparation for the new year, we'll be talking about several video game films and television shows that we are most excited about. Which adaptations made our list?

A Minecraft Movie

Everyone seems mixed about next year's theatrical release of A Minecraft Movie. So much so that it seems the trailer has been better received than when the teaser dropped.

Almost everyone has heard of Minecraft but in case you haven't, the sandbox game, released in 2011, enabled players to create their own world stylized in 8-bit-like art. Over the years the game drew fans of practically all ages, spreading out into the merchandising world of toys and clothing.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3's Record-Setting Rotten Tomatoes Score Addressed By Franchise Writers
Image
Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Rotten Tomatoes score is addressed by the franchise writers. Released on December 20, the video game adaptation film is the third film in Paramount's modern Sonic franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has already been confirmed, which will continue the story of Sonic, Shadow, and more beyond the events of the second movie. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had a moderate box office opening, raking in just over $60 million during its first weekend. It continues to play in theaters, competing against Mufasa: The Lion King and returning favorites such as Moana 2.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Sonic writers Joel Miller and Pat Casey react to the movie's Rotten Tomatoes score. When making Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the pair joked that they recognized the similarities between Shadow and "a certain dark doppelganger from another superhero franchise part 3," referencing Spider-Man 3. They worried that there was a "curse involved" to third movies.

This 2018 Sci-Fi Movie Prepared Pedro Pascal For His 'Gladiator II' and 'The Last of Us' Roles
Image
After 20 years of rumors and development, Ridley Scott's sequel to the Best Picture winner Gladiator is finally in cinemas. As if that wasn't enough to make audiences excited, Gladiator II also treats us to some standout supporting performances, including one from Pedro Pascal, who brings depth and humanity to the role of General Acacius. His character is a conflicted anti-hero who reluctantly finds himself as a paternal figure for the story's younger lead. Ring any bells? Of course. In Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin's 2023 TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game, The Last of Us, Pascal plays Joel Miller, a smuggler tasked with transporting a young woman named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the US during a fungal zombie pandemic. This theme is not exclusive to The Last of Us, having featured prominently in countless fantasy and sci-fi stories, including The Mandalorian, which also stars Pedro Pascal as a similar archetype.

“I don’t believe that names sell videogames”: Troy Baker isn’t Worried About Hollywood Actors ‘Taking Over’ Voice Artists After Metal Gear Solid 5 Shuffling
Image
Troy Baker is one of the most prominent voice actors in video games, having voiced Joel Miller in The Last of Us and Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite. Baker was part of Hideo Kojima’s final game for Konami, Metal Gear Solid V, playing Revolver Ocelot. The lead voice actor in the game was replaced by a film actor. When Baker was asked about it, he shared that he wasn’t worried about film actors taking over video game roles.

David Hayter, who played Solid Snake in the previous installments, was removed from Metal Gear Solid V without notice. He was replaced by Kiefer Sutherland as Kojima believed he could also bring the subtle facial movements required for the character.

HBO's The Last of Us Cast and Character Guide
Image
The following contains mentions of rape.

The Last of Us quickly became HBO and Max's most popular show after its premiere episode, "When You're Lost in the Darkness." In the span of nine episodes, viewers fell in love with the characters as they watched them struggle in a post-apocalyptic society, and cried when many of them died by the elements of the cruel world. Just as they did in the original video game, characters came and went on Joel and Ellie's journey, leaving very few by the end. But since the series has been renewed for a second season, it only means new survivors for the duo to encounter.

The Last of Us primarily follows Joel, a rugged survivor grappling with grief from his past, and Ellie, an immune teenager who uses her wits as a shield of armor. The two are tasked by the freedom-fighting organization known as the...

The Last of Us emerged as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of 2023. Starring Pedro Pascal in the lead role, the series set a new gold standard for video game adaptations. It also won Pascal his first Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series but he failed to win in the category.

However, one of the most gut-wrenchingly emotional scenes from the show’s sixth episode was improvised by Pascal. During a podcast appearance, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann peeled the cover on the emotional scene and Pascal’s improvisation while proving why he should have won an Emmy for the performance.

One Of The Last Of Us' Most Gut-Wrenching Lines Was Improvised By Pedro Pascal
Image
HBO's "The Last of Us" doesn't need much improvisation. The heart-pounding series from Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann pulls plenty of its best lines from the video game on which it's based, and when writers do make changes, they tend to be for the better. Series cinematographer Eben Bolter even described the show's Emmy-winning third episode screenplay to /Film as a "golden script" and "an instruction manual for greatness." It sounds like improv moments were few and far between during the filming of the first season, but Pedro Pascal did manage to ad lib a line that made one key moment stronger.

In a conversation with original Joel Miller voice actor Troy Baker for "The Last of Us Podcast," co-creators Mazin and Druckmann unpacked an emotional episode 6 scene in which Joel broke down to his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna), revealing the true depths of his care for Ellie (Bella Ramsey...

The Last Of Us Season 2 Can Overcome Its Biggest Challenge With Non-Linear Storytelling
Image
The Last of Us season 2 faces the challenge of adapting a dual-perspective story. Joel's early death is a challenge because it was unexpected and would limit the amount of screen time for Pedro Pascal in the series. A non-linear narrative could work for The Last of Us season 2 by strategically using Joel flashbacks or dual timelines and cross-cutting between Abby and Ellie's stories in a logical and balanced way.

HBO's The Last of Us will tackle the storytelling of Naughty Dog's second game in the franchise, and its biggest challenge in doing so can be overcome with a non-linear approach. Following the success of The Last of Us season 1, there are high hopes for season 2, especially since it will involve the controversial Last of Us character, Abby. Limited The Last of Us season 2 cast updates means it's unknown which actor will take on the role, despite Abby already being cast.

Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Last Of Us.

Cordyceps, the fictional virus in HBO's The Last of Us, is based on a real-life fungus that infects ants and spiders but poses no threat to humans. Joel's forgetfulness to buy pancake mix and a birthday cake turns out to be his saving grace, as the Cordyceps virus was infecting people through contaminated flour.
