Wrote and/or sang several hit country songs such as "Dang Me", "Do-Wacka-Do", "Chug-A-Lug", "England Swings", "Little Green Apples", and his biggest hit "King of the Road".

Wrote the original score for the hit Broadway musical "Big River", which was based on Mark Twain's "Huckleberry Finn". He won two Tonys for the work.

(2010 - 2011) His musical, "Big River", was performed at the Bohemian Theatre Ensemble in Chicago, Illinois with Andrew Mueller and Courtney Crouse in the cast. P. Marston Sullivan was the director. Nicholass Davio was the musical director.

(1997-1998 Season) His musical, "Big River," was performed at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey with Lawrence Clayton, David Gunderman, Steve Boles, John Hillner, Shannon Stoeke and Jessica Wright in the cast. James Rocco was director and choreographer. Vicki Carter was musical director. Michael Anania was scenic designer. Jack Mehler was lighting designer. Michele Wynne was costume designer.

William Hauptman wrote the book. The musical was adapted from the novel by Mark Twain. Jeff Calhoun was director and choreographer.
