Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who rose to fame as the son on 1980s megahit The Cosby Show and had a prolific acting career that included series-regular slots on The Resident and Malcom & Eddie and was a Grammy-winning recording artist, died Sunday in a drowning accident while on a family vacation in Costa Rica. He was 54.

Costa Rican National Police told ABC News that Warner’s official cause of death was asphyxia. Police said he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon province, after being caught by a high current. He was found Sunday afternoon.

The Associated Press reported that the local police initially reported that Warner “was rescued by people on the beach.” But first responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross found him without vital signs, and he was taken to the morgue.

Dracula is one of the most iconic characters in horror, having been adapted countless times on stage and screen. Robert Eggers recently reinvented the timeless tale in Nosferatu, and now another distinct approach to the vampire mythos is coming to the big screen. Based on Joe Hill’s short story of the same name, Abraham’s Boys: A Dracula Story is a sequel to Bram Stoker’s epistolary novel. Picking up decades later, it is a psychological horror story about Abraham Van Helsing and his family.

The film follows Max and Rudy Van Helsing, who have spent their lives under the strict and overprotective rule of their father, Abraham. Unaware of his dark past, they struggle to understand his paranoia and increasingly erratic behavior. But when they begin to uncover the violent truths behind their father’s history with Dracula, their world unravels, forcing them to confront the terrifying legacy they were never meant to inherit.

Kaiju No. 8 season 2 was supposed to debut with a bang. Yet, right off the bat, it is apparent that the sequel series will struggle to find its footing in the highly competitive summer 2025 anime season. The anime is debuting almost three weeks into July, at a time when most of its competitors have already found their appropriate fanbase.

Yet, its late release is the least of the anime’s problems. Episode 1 of season 2 adds too many anime-original sequences, and unfortunately, not all of them serve a purpose. The episode feels padded out with fillers instead of scenes that will actually progress the plot.

When I first heard that Kaiju No. 8 was making a return with the second season, I was pumped up to see Kafka Hibino make his epic return after his struggling journey in season 1. The 32-year-old protagonist offers a refreshingly mature and deeply relatable journey for anime fans that differs from the typical young hero archetypes who are frustratingly handsome and unnecessarily powerful.

This first episode of Kaiju No. 8 season 2 got my hopes up, and although the narrative definitely took its sweet time to get moving, it eventually reached the spot. The entire first episode is divided into three different developments, and two of them focus on Kafka’s struggles and his internal conflicts with what is going to happen next.

Within the story, the one theme that Kaiju No. 8 absolutely perfected was unpredictability in following one’s dream. The story is a constant reminder that even after things do not go as planned, characters still manage to find a place for themselves in the world. The best example of this is the protagonist of the story, Kafka Hibino himself, who has failed every single time but still made it big.

Ever since the second season of Kaiju No. 8 was announced, I have been excited to see the next phase of Kafka Hibino’s journey. From working as a cleaner to joining the Defense Force that literally destroys Kaiju, Kafka has come a long way, and I am happy to see him grow even more in the upcoming story.

However, there is one aspect of the story that helps his growth the most, according to me, and that is the absence of a love interest in his life. While some would argue that Mina Ashiro is his love interest, the dynamic between the two is very different and does not involve romance. This has helped him stay focused on his goal and make sure he continues to grow no matter what.
