This Day That Year: 20 Years Of Shoojit Sircar’s Debut – Yahaan
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Shoojit Sircar’s directorial debut Yahaan, which released 20 years ago in a new installment of This Day That Year series.

Beautiful faces, smiling faces, saddened faces, perturbed faces… The Kashmir that we see in debutant director Shoojit Sircar’s Yahaan is a valley of mystery and joy. Cinematographer Jakob Ishre has used blue-tinged lenses to highlight the mood of doom and beauty.

There have been at least two other films earlier where love has unfolded in the clammy clasp of Kashmiri militancy. Neither Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir nor Ashok Pandit’s Sheen got the the sur of romance-in-the-times-of-ravages.

Yahaan inches closer to the romance and brutal realism of the Valley without losing out on the basic aethetic value of the story. Director Sircar takes his time to build up a romance. The early sequences showing the army offier Captain Aman(Jimmy Shergill) darting open-mouthed looks...

This Day That Year: Raj Kumar Hirani’s Underwhelming Sanjay Dutt Biopic Completes Seven Years
Image
Subhash K Jha, in a new installment of This Day That Year, looks at Raj Kumar Hirani’s Sanju, which featured Ranbir Kapoor transforming himself into the Sanjay Dutt, in a film that released in 2018.

Raj Kumar Hirani’s biopic Sanju on the controversial star is long on drama, short on facts. It cleverly makes Sanjay Dutt look like a victim of his own naivete. To his credit, Ranbir Kapoor plays Sanjay Dutt with such ardent goofiness and sincerely disingenuousness that I seriously began to wonder if the film’s opening joke—about a bogus biographer played by Piyush Mishra (all people!) likening Dutt to Bapu—had come true.

Raj Kumar Hirani and his writer Abhijat Joshi lay the blame for Dutt’s sordid image squarely on the media. There is a silly newspaper editor played by Prakash Belawadi who is shown as ‘guilty’ of printing an article asking ‘Is Sanjay Dutt Finished?...

This Village-Set, Hard-Hitting Film Is the Complete Opposite Of Panchayat — Now Streaming On Ott
Image
This Gritty Village Drama Is Opposite Of Panchayat(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

After three much-loved seasons, Panchayat Season 4 has finally arrived on Amazon Prime Video. The village-set series, often called a modern version of Malgudi Days, is widely admired for its rustic charm, simple storytelling, and relatable characters.

But if you’re in the mood for a hard-hitting, dystopian rural drama with intense performances and a powerful message, here’s something different. This critically acclaimed film is the complete opposite of Panchayat’s feel-good humour. On the contrary, it’s a disturbing and brutal take on a serious social issue. So, viewer discretion is strongly advised. Read on to find out what this film is and where it is available to watch online.

The Film That’s The Complete Opposite Of Panchayat

We are talking about the 2003 dystopian drama Matrubhoomi: A Nation Without Women. Directed by Manish Jha, the film...

When Kangana Did A Hooch Version Of Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill
Image
Subhash K Jha examines the one where Kangana did a version of Uma Thurman’s Kill Bill in Sai Kabir‘s Revolver Rani (2014).

In a scene straight out of a street play, Kangana Ranaut, playing what seems like a cross between Uma Thurman in Kill Bill and Seema Biswas in Bandit Queen, Kangana in Revolver Rani which clocks 11 years on April 25, tells the mother of a young girl, “Teach her how to shoot a gun. It’s the only way she can survive.”

Revolver Rani (Rr) is an enormously disturbing and yet deeply satisfying tribute to many things at the same time. Director Sai Kabir (who had previously directed an unreleased film) pays a hefty homage to many filmmakers, among them Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bharadwaj, Quentin Tarantino, Mehboob Khan, and Shekhar Kapoor. And yet, for all its derivative aspirations, Rr is a fiercely original piece of cinema, crafted with compelling concentration and impassioned intuition.

Revisiting Anurag Kashyap’s 2009 brutal Gulaal
Image
Anurag Kashyap’s Gulaal was released 16 years ago, and Subhash K Jha revisits the brutal drama where Shakespeare meets Quentin Tarantino.

Gulaal emblazons itself across the screen as a deft and brutal film on the culture of decadence in a typical north Indian setting. And it spares no room for niceties as it is a powerful portrait of a culture that thrives on bullying tactics. The homage to the cinema of Vishal Bhardwaj is rampant in Gulaal.

Somewhere in the brilliantly cohesive soundtrack, we even hear strains of Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Pani pani re’ from Bhardwaj’s Maachis in the film where life is lived by the gun and the mantra for survival is deception.

The world of Gulaal is crowded, claustrophobic and potent. The writer-director spares us none of the details in bringing to life a world where unlicensed guns and unchecked lawlessness rule. This is the kingdom of anarchy.

18 Years Of Manoj Bajapayee’s War Film 1971
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits the war drama based on a true story titled 1971, starring Manoj Bajpayee and Ravi Kishan, which released to critical acclaim in 2007.

War films are hard to make, especially in India, where budgets are often as constrained as the director’s vision.

Director Amrit Sagar manages to make 1971 look filled-out and believable, not just at the centre but also at the edges. The snowy Manali backdrop, where the six protagonists negotiate a lethal game of cross-border politics, helps to keep the proceedings above the mound of mundane that’s often the fate of politically-driven movies.

Though the immediate impulse is to look at this fidgety-fingered flick as a didactic bhai-bhai cross-border drama, Sagar and his crew, especially Chittranjan Das behind the compelling camera and Piyush Mishra in front with the energy-driven, often flippant-at-top-but-profound-beneath dialogues, bring a quality of rhythmic ruggedness to the narrative.

Unlike that other star-studded...

Illegal 3 Series Review | starring Neha Sharma and Piyush Mishra
Image
Illegal 3, the latest installment in the legal drama series, unfortunately, does not live up to its potential.

Despite its promising premise and a strong cast, the series struggles with pacing and depth, which ultimately detracts from its overall impact.

The storyline, while initially intriguing, soon becomes predictable and formulaic. The central plot revolves around a high-stakes legal battle, but it lacks the complexity and tension that made the previous seasons more engaging. Viewers may find themselves losing interest as the episodes progress, due to repetitive scenarios and a lack of surprising twists.

Character development is another area where Illegal 3 falls short. While the actors deliver commendable performances, their characters are often one-dimensional and do not evolve in a meaningful way throughout the series. This lack of growth and depth makes it difficult for the audience to form a strong connection with the protagonists and their struggles.

That said, Illegal 3 does have its moments of brilliance.

April 2024 Box Office Expectations (400 Crore – 9 Releases): Ajay Devgn & Akshay Kumar’s 300+ Crore Massive Eid Together Might Not Beat Salman Khan’s Best?
Image
April 2024 Box Office Expectations: 400 Crore With 9 Releases ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Another month has arrived, and another set of releases is scheduled for this Eid month. The biggest one, of course, is the massive Ajay Devgn Vs Akshay Kumar clash at the April 2024 box office with Maidaan and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. However, if all goes well, then the two films might put up a strong show, bringing a massive 300 crore collection on Eid.

However, despite the 300 crore cumulative collection, the two Eid releases might not beat Salman Khan‘s best Eid performance of 320.24 crore by Bajrangi Bhaijaan in 2015. The film was helmed by Kabir Khan and is the biggest Eid release till date.

April 2024, the box office will witness 9 releases that include a clash we discussed and another clash between Dukaan and Jnu. There will also be a triple clash between Janhvi Kapoor, Vidya Balan, and Uorfi Javed. Overall, the...

Jahangir National University: Is Bollywood ready for yet another propaganda film before the elections?
Image
The ongoing elections 2024 have unleashed a frenzy of political opportunism and theatrical absurdity. As if the spectacle of actors jumping into the political fray wasn’t enough, we now have the grotesque amalgamation of cinema and politics embodied in the forthcoming film, ‘Jahangir National University’ (Jnu).

This cinematic debacle features a mishmash of familiar faces from the entertainment industry, including Siddharth Bodke, Urvashi Rautela, Ravi Kishan, Piyush Mishra, Vijay Raaz, and Rashami Desai. However, instead of showcasing any semblance of artistic merit or intellectual depth, the teaser for ‘Jahangir National University’ is an insipid display of theatrical bombast and vacuous sensationalism.

Released amidst a deafening silence and a palpable lack of public interest, the promotional material for this film reeks of desperate attempts to manufacture controversy for the sole purpose of garnering attention. The narrative presented is not just one-dimensional but egregiously biased, reflecting a clear agenda to manipulate public...

‘Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust’ Review: The Equilibrium Between Oppression and Freedom
Image
Why do we find ourselves yielding to the sway of an authoritative regime? Is it a testament to our fragility, or perhaps a divergence from the principles championed by the liberal ethos? Yet, can we guarantee that in ushering in a society governed by liberal ideals, we won’t inadvertently birth a new autocracy? Schirkoa: In Lies We Trust (2024) is an animated film, based on Ishan Shukla’s short film of the same name made in 2016, fearlessly navigates such uncharted territory, compelling us to reassess our perceptions of an all-encompassing society. This cinematic venture invites us to question the fabric of our beliefs, urging a contemplative exploration of the intricate dynamics that shape the landscapes of inclusivity. The enigma between totalitarian governance and freedom beckons us to ponder our allegiance and the ever-shifting nature of power. The narrative unfolds within the suffocating confines of a totalitarian state, where the essence...

‘Main Atal Hoon’ Movie Review | Timely but straightforward biopic of a beloved leader
Image
Politics and actors have always had a deep-rooted connection, so it is hardly surprising that irrespective of his or her political affiliation, an actor does not let an opportunity to essay the role of a popular leader pass by. Especially if the subject is the former Prime Minister late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Directed by Ravi Jadhav, ‘Main Atal Hoon’ is a biographical drama that follows the life and political career of Vajpayee, a beloved mass leader who was not only a politician, but also a poet, a gentleman, and as the film suggests, “a statesman”.

Highlighting Vajpayee’s role in shepherding India during some of its most challenging times, including the Kargil War with Pakistan and the Pokhran nuclear tests, the 137-minute film attempts to explore the man behind the politician, revealing his personal struggles and relationships with family and friends, as well as his love for poetry and literature.

Of course, I don’t generally admit that,” he tells Ians.

While he did get a job in Singapore, in less than a year it started getting boring for him.

“In this sea of monotony, I started sketching in my diary and I...
