Who Prince Charming In Shrek 2 Is Voiced By (& Where You Know Him From)
Image
The voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2 is provided by one of Britain’s most acclaimed actors. Released in 2004, Shrek 2 was one of the best-received sequels ever made, with universal critical acclaim to match its predecessor and even more success at the box office. The Shrek sequel also continued to subvert the expectations of fairy tale traditions: after Prince Charming embarked on a daring quest to free the princess from the tower, he was shocked to learn she’d already been rescued by and married her savior – an ogre. Whereas Prince Charming is typically depicted as a hero, he's one of the villains of the Shrek franchise.

The Shrek movies have one of the most star-studded voice casts of any animated franchise. It’s headlined by a trio of A-list icons – Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Fiona – with just as much...

Link Tank: Could The Punisher Return in the MCU?
The Punisher (2017)
We’ve heard all about Kingpin and Daredevil returning to the MCU, but what about The Punisher? Jon Bernthal weighs in on Frank Castle’s potential revival.

“It’s been nearly 3 years since Netflix canceled The Punisher, along with its entire Marvel slate of programming. And while some Netflix characters, like Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, are being reincorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, others are unlikely to join the family-friendly Disney/Marvel brand.”

Review: "Arabesque" (1966) Starring Gregory Peck And Sophia Loren; Blu-ray Special Edition

“A Beautiful Mess”

By Raymond Benson

Filmmaker Stanley Donen had substantial success with his comedy-thriller, Charade (1963), which starred Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. It was hyped and critiqued as “Hitchcockian” in tone and style, especially the light-hearted and glitzy To Catch a Thief (1955). (There are many who mistakenly believe that Charade is a Hitchcock film.)

The studio then wanted to repeat that success with a similar picture, Arabesque, also with Cary Grant in the lead role with Donen directing again. However, Grant felt that the script was “terrible” and passed. Donen allegedly wasn’t too thrilled with the script, either, and he wasn’t too keen on making the picture without Grant.

Then Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren expressed interest in the movie, so Donen acquiesced. Sounds like a fairy tale scenario for the greenlighting of a Hollywood movie, right? The two Oscar-winning stars were cast,...

Ray Davies Talks ‘Arthur’ Reissue, ‘Project Kinks’ Reunion Project
The Kinks were on the verge of collapse when they began 1969’s Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire). They’d just parted ways with original bassist Pete Quaife and their previous album, 1968’s The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, failed even to chart in their native England despite excellent reviews. Making matters worse, an ongoing feud with the American Federation of Musicians made it impossible for them to tour in the States, a devastating blow at a time when groups like Led Zeppelin and...

Kenneth Branagh and Julian Mitchell: how we made Another Country
Writer Julian Mitchell and actor Kenneth Branagh remember the struggle to mount a risky anti-establishment play, and how Rupert Everett did his best to spice it up

Julian Mitchell, writer

In 1979, when Mrs Thatcher stood up in the Commons and announced that the third man in the Burgess and Maclean spy case was Anthony Blunt, lots of people wrote articles and books saying how easy it must have been for these men to go over to Russia. But their reasoning didn't explain it to me. There's a great difference between betraying your country and wanting to change the world.

What wasn't really mentioned was that almost all the men involved were gay – though I'm not sure we said "gay" back then – and had all been to the same kind of public school. I'd been at Winchester myself. Though I hadn't been rebellious, I knew the oppressive way boarding school can work on people,...

Rupert Everett scoops Sheridan Morley prize for memoir Vanished Years
Judges reward 'surprising, hilarious and wise' follow-up to British actor's first autobiography Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins

Rupert Everett has won this year's Sheridan Morley prize for his second autobiography, Vanished Years.

The memoir, which takes its title from Noël Coward's last poem, picks up the actor's story in the last decade with a generous helping of Proustian flashbacks en route. It's Everett's second memoir, following his 2006 publication Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins, which detailed his rise to fame after starring in the film of Julian Mitchell's boarding school-set drama Another Country, at 25.

Everett, currently starring as Oscar Wilde in the West End production of David Hare's The Judas Kiss, has described the latest instalment "a middle-aged book" on account of its romantic nostalgia.

Published in September, Vanished Years was widely and lavishly praised in reviews, with the Guardian critic Talitha Stevenson describing it as "a tragical comical,...

DVD Release: Another Country
DVD Release Date: May 7, 2013

Price: DVD $19.95

Studio: Hen’s Tooth

Rupert Everett (l.) and Colin Firth star in Another Country.

Rupert Everett (Hysteria) and Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) star in the 1984 biographical drama-romance Another Country, which marked Firth’s movie debut and one of Everett’s first starring roles.

Set in England in 1932, the film focuses on Guy Bennett (Everett), an upper classman attending an elite British boys’ school. Amid an atmosphere of wealth and privilege, the flamboyant Guy embraces awareness of his gay identity just as his best friend Tommy (Firth) faces a growing preoccupation with Karl Marx. Each rebels in his own way against the demands of social conformity. But it is Guy’s infatuation with an underclassman (Cary Elwes, No Strings Attached) that takes center stage as his contempt for authority clashes with the school’s rigid code of conduct.

The PG-rated Another Country was...

Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange (1971)
New 'Clockwork Orange' Explains Dystopian Obsession
Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange (1971)
The following is an introduction to a new edition of Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" [W.W. Norton, $24.95] written by Andrew Biswell. The piece sheds light on the enduring legacy of the novel, and the various dystopian works that influenced Burgess's writing. Biswell also discusses Burgess's (often clever) responses to the novel's adaptation, and ideas for adaptations that never came to fruition:

In 1994, less than a year after Anthony Burgess had died at the age of seventy-six, BBC Scotland commissioned the novelist William Boyd to write a radio play in celebration of his life and work. This was broadcast during the Edinburgh Festival on 21 August 1994, along with a concert performance of Burgess’s music and a recording of his Glasgow Overture. The programme was called "An Airful of Burgess," with the actor John Sessions playing the parts of both Burgess and his fictional alter ego, the poet F. X. Enderby. On the same day,...

Jonathan Cecil obituary
Versatile actor and writer often called upon to play toffs and bumbling clerics

The actor Jonathan Cecil, who has died of pneumonia aged 72 after suffering from emphysema, spent much of his career playing upper-class characters. That is hardly surprising since his father was Lord David Cecil, Goldsmiths' professor of English literature at Oxford University, and Jonathan's grandfather was the 4th Marquess of Salisbury. Although often typecast as a comic blueblood, there was infinitely more to Jonathan than that. He excelled in Chekhov and Shakespeare, and four times played Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night, always investing the character with a silvery pathos. In 1998 he had an outstanding season at Shakespeare's Globe, where he appeared in As You Like It and Thomas Middleton's A Mad World, My Masters, in which he played Sir Bounteous Progress – "gazing benignly", as John Gross wrote, "on almost everything, even his own undoing".

Silvio Narizzano obituary
Director best known for Georgy Girl, a romantic comedy set in 60s London

The film and TV director Silvio Narizzano, who has died aged 84, handled several genres throughout his career, including black comedies, period pieces, social dramas, action thrillers and horror movies. But one picture, his swinging London romantic comedy Georgy Girl (1966), stands out from the rest of his eclectic filmography.

Georgy Girl was part of the trend in which British cinema shifted the focus from provincial life and back to the metropolis, celebrating new freedoms and social possibilities. Narizzano, influenced by the French New Wave and his chic contemporaries Richard Lester, John Schlesinger and Tony Richardson, explored such "shocking" subjects as abortion, illegitimacy, adultery and sexual promiscuity with a light touch. The film, which took its cue from the jaunty title song by the Seekers, had superb performances from Lynn Redgrave as the virginal and plain Georgina; Charlotte Rampling...

After performing with the Drama Centre London, he was cast as the lead in a West End production of Julian Mitchell’s Another Country. 30 Greatest Gay Actors #13: Rupert Everett
Rupert Everett first came to public attention in 1981, when he was cast in Julian Mitchell’s play and subsequent film Another Country as an openly gay student at an English public school. Despite starring in Another Country, Everett only came out during a press interview in Paris nine years later and ever since he has defined and re-defined himself for the mass media. His coming out helped in shattering stereotypes and advance public discourse about homosexuality, gay actors, and the film industry. However Everett still to date admits that it has also cost him several roles in Hollywood.

Everett emerged as a film actor in the mid-1990s, first receiving attention for his performances in Nicholas Hytner’s adaptation of Alan Bennet’s The Madness of King George and Robert

His most excellent role: Francesco Dellamorte in Cemetary Man

Altman’s Ready to Wear, but his career really took off...

Screen Queens: Another Country
Hey, MattCanada here with this weeks queer cinema post. I finally got around to watching Another Country. It was not what I expected at all and this did affect how much I liked the film. My expectations going into the movie were of a spy thriller with a hefty dose of gay sex, not PG fondling. What I was confronted with was a drama which explores the British class system through the study of Guy Bennett's (fictionalised Guy Burgess) disenfranchisement from his class because of his homosexuality at an unnamed Boys Public School (read: super posh). The film is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and intelligently written - a Merchant Ivory film in everything but name.

Rupert Everett in his star-making role (first on stage, then on screen)

The lead actors are all strong, especially Rupert Everett's flamboyant toff Guy Bennett. Everett does not overplay him which is a...
