‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Connects Stephen King’s Worlds in Chilling Teaser
Image
HBO has released the second official trailer for It: Welcome to Derry, offering a chilling preview of the upcoming nine-episode series based on Stephen King’s 1986 horror novel. Arriving on HBO Max this October, the prequel pulls audiences back into the cursed town of Derry, Maine, to explore the evil that lurked there long before the Losers’ Club faced off against Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

The teaser begins in 1962, as a new family settles into town, unaware of the dark force that quietly festers beneath the surface. Early glimpses hint at a population infected by paranoia and cruelty, as an unexplained evil appears to feed on Derry’s collective fears. While Bill Skarsgård’s return as Pennywise is only teased, his looming presence is unmistakable, with references to mysterious disappearances and unspoken horrors suggesting the beginning of a fresh cycle of terror.

The 5 Best John Wayne Movies That Are Streaming For Free
Image
Let's get this out of the way from the start: John Wayne was a problematic figure, and he is reviled in some quarters for his track record of bigoted views and Commie-bashing during the Red Scare. However, there is little denying that the Duke was a true Hollywood legend and one of the most memorable actors in the history of cinema. Over 45 years since he passed away, Wayne is still one of the first names that spring to mind when we think about Western movies, and rightly so. But he also transcended the genre that made him a superstar, standing alongside the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Mickey Mouse, and Marilyn Monroe as an icon of the 20th Century.

Like many modern viewers, I didn't know a ton about Wayne until quite recently when I started writing about his movies for /Film; as a progressive type, I felt an aversion towards...

Guillermo del Toro picks It’s a Wonderful Life as his favorite Christmas movie
Image
This past holiday season, we shared some unconventional Christmas movie recommendations, like The Silent Partner, Anna and the Apocalypse, The Ref, and my own recommendation, Trancers. But even though I love Trancers and also watch Anna and the Apocalypse every December, my two favorite Christmas movies are not unconventional choices at all: every December 25th, I watch A Christmas Story and Christmas Vacation. Very common choices. Someone else with very common choice for their favorite Christmas movie is filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, who revealed to BFI that his holiday favorite is It’s a Wonderful Life.

Directed by Frank Capra, who crafted the screenplay with Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, and Jo Swerling, the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life was based on the short story The Greatest Gift by Philip Van Doren Stern (which was loosely based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol) . Here’s the synopsis: George Bailey has so many...

10 Best Westerns Featuring Doc Holliday (That Aren't Tombstone), Ranked
Image
John Henry "Doc" Holliday (1851–1887) was a sharp-witted dentist-turned-gunslinger and gambler with a hot temper who ultimately became famous for his role in the Wild West and his close friendship with lawman Wyatt Earp. Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Holliday turned to gambling and occasionally worked as a dentist. He developed a reputation as a skilled card player and a quick-draw gunfighter. Holliday's partnership with Earp led him to become involved in law enforcement conflicts, including the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, in 1881. This deadly confrontation, pitting Earp and Holliday against the Clanton-McLaury gang, became legendary.

Doc Holliday died in Colorado in 1887 at the age of 36. His colorful life story has been the subject of many books and movies, most notable in the 1993 movie Tombstone with Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday. However, Doc’s life inspired many other movies, including some that rival the legendary Tombstone itself.

‘Hope the Fans are Excited’: Bill Skarsgard Hypes Up Pennywise Comeback in Welcome to Derry Series
Image
Swedish actor Bill Skarsgård opened up about his long-awaited return as Pennywise in the upcoming HBO spinoff series Welcome to Derry. Skarsgård first portrayed the shape-shifting demon clown in Warner Bros.’ blockbuster It franchise.

During a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Skarsgård revealed what it was like reprising the fan-favorite villain again, after five years since It Chapter Two made its theatrical debut. He explained that it was kind of weird to be working with the same people he worked with during the It movies. “It was strange to be back. [Producers] Andy and Barbara Muschietti were doing the show, and I adore them. Most of the crew was the same people that did the movies. So it was this weird thing of going back to this gang of people that you created this thing with.”

The Best Christmas Movies On Amazon Prime Video
Image
As the Christmas season approaches, you're probably ready to get into the holiday spirit with some on-brand movies — and if we're putting aside all but one streaming service, there are some pretty great selections on Amazon's Prime Video. I'm just as susceptible to holiday cheer as anyone else, and whether they're from my childhood or new discoveries, I like to settle in on a chilly early winter night with a holiday-themed movie. So what are some great selections on Prime Video?

This list obviously excludes anything that requires a secondary subscription — looking at you, movies available on Prime through Max and Starz — as well as anything you have to pay to rent, but there are still some pretty solid holiday movies to choose from on the online retailer's proprietary streamer. From dramatic family Christmases to a sprawling British ensemble comedy to one of the most famous (and emotional) Christmas movies in cinematic history,...

It's a Wonderful Life Was Initially a Flop (with Communist Allegations)
Image
Over the decades, Frank Capra's 1946 holiday-themed family film, Its a Wonderful Life, has established its place in American culture as a Christmas classic. Perhaps it's more correct to call it the Christmas classic. That would come as a great shock to anyone alive back then when it first hit (empty) theaters.

An ode to nostalgia among the Greatest Generation (back when that generation were just in their teens and 20s), the movie itself has taken on a larger reputation embodying the very concept of nostalgia, the ultimate Hallmark movie before the Hallmark Channel existed. That cheery title belied the fact that the production of the film had been a colossal pain for everyone involved, and left the director in misery and self-doubt, lashing out at all those creative parties he depended on most. Forget the cheery aura, nobody made any friends on this set.

To put things in necessary perspective,...

10 Western Movie Tropes That Define The Genre
Image
Western movies have long been built on repeated tropes that define the genre. As the exciting stories of how cowboys, bandits, and outlaws make their way through a lawless life across the Wild West frontier, many tropes and cliches have reappeared time and time again to the point that they become readily associated with the genre itself. These tropes helped create a cinematic language for Western movies and helped them stand apart from other types of genre films.

Many of the best Western movies ever made were packed with tropes and cliches of the genre. The acclaimed collaborations of icons like John Wayne and John Ford would not have been possible without the foundations of the Western genre and the tropes and clichs that it embodied. From over-the-top brawls in dusty saloons to lone gunmen facing off against ruthless crooks in a lawless town, these tropes helped define Westerns.

After Tony Awards, will Sarah Paulson or Jeremy Strong join the Triple Crown of Acting club?
Image
To date, there are 24 distinguished individuals (living and deceased) who have won competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards. The Triple Crown of Acting, as it’s known — see the list below. And there’s no horsing around.

Glenda Jackson became the most recent person to join the club when she received the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play in for “Three Tall Women” in 2018.

While the recent 77th Tony Awards didn’t produce another Triple Crown Acting champion (there was no Tony-less Oscar and Emmy winner in contention), it is possible that some unsuspecting thespian was put on course to becoming the 25th name on the list above. And so the awards plot thickens.

See Watch our lively chats with hundreds of 2024 Emmy contenders

I’ll appropriately start with Sarah Paulson, who accepted the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for “Appropriate.” (It marked her first Tony nomination.

An Iconic and Controversial Western Is Coming to Prime Video
Image
A controversial Western is about to hit Prime Video, and fans of the classics are gunning for a rewatch of 1952's High Noon.

Directed by Fred Zinneman and starring Gary Cooper, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado, Grace Kelly, Ian McDonald, and Lon Chaney, 1952's High Noon is slated to arrive on Prime Video for streaming on June 1. Though the film has been available for purchase and rent previously, the upcoming addition to Prime Video's regular roster of films marks the first time that High Noon has been available for streaming on the service. Upon its release, the film was hailed as "un-American" by classic Western actor and Hollywood icon John Wayne, largely due to its subversions of typical Western themes.

Review: Fred Zinnemann’s High Noon on the Kl Studio Classics 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
Obviously it wasn’t by design, but the early-1950s renewal of the western genre, aided in large part by the success of Winchester ’73, which heralded a career second act for both its director, Anthony Mann, and its star, James Stewart, was answered in other quarters of the industry by multiple endeavors to take the once disreputable genre, previously dismissed as Roy Rogers/Saturday-matinee bunkum, all the way into the hallowed halls of state-sanctioned, capital-a art. And, as it happened, the two westerns that made a big runner-up showing at the 1952 and 1953 Oscars, High Noon and Shane, respectively, also served, by virtue of holding what wide swaths of the future cinephile demographic would come to view as Vichy letters of transit, as high-value targets for skeptics of the official cultural narrative.

These auteurist critics and film buffs, whose philosophy acquired definite contours some 10-odd years later, observed a different watershed moment: Rio Bravo.

Oscars: American-born acting winners cover 36 states and territories

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.

At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. New York (home to 49 winners) is the most common birth state among the entire group, followed by California (34), Illinois (13), Massachusetts (11), and Pennsylvania (11).

Bearing in mind our specific birthplace focus, the 16 states...

8 Book Couples Made Better By The Movie Or TV Adaptation
Image
Onscreen relationships can often surpass their written counterparts due to exceptional chemistry between the actors and the visual aspects of the adaptation. Examples, such as Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler from "Gone with the Wind," show how star power and incredible performances can elevate a relationship onscreen. Characters like Bridget Jones and Mark Darcy or Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley benefited from the subtleties of their romance being brought to life in movies, adding extra impact and enjoyment.

It can be disappointing when a book gets adapted for movies or television and the couples or relationships feel lackluster in comparison, that’s why it is so enjoyable to watch onscreen relationships that end up even better than their written counterparts. Often an onscreen relationship can improve upon the version seen in the book due to incredible chemistry between the actors playing the role, or the visual aspects of the adaptation...

The Greatest Showdowns in Cinema History
Image
Cinema has long showcased the fight between heroes and villains, with many of the best films climaxing in a showdown between good and evil. Everything from classic westerns to gritty action movies has followed heroes in their attempt to survive or defeat an enemy, all drawing down to a necessary duel. While some cinematic finales follow big, epic battles between armies, the best way to show heroes against villains is in smaller, personal showdowns.

A great showdown between heroes and villains can either lead into the next chapter of a character's story or signal the end of an epic saga. Regardless, fans will often wait until the very end of a film to finally see the protagonist prevail in a tense confrontation against the bad guy. Some of the most enduring and iconic moments ever put into film are centered around these final confrontations, and help the film retain love and praise for decades.

The Christmas Movie Villain Who Didn't Deserve His Punishment
Image
Can you think of a villain from a Christmas movie that didn't exactly face justice for their crimes? The obvious answer is Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) from It's a Wonderful Life, who never faces any consequences for his actions despite stealing a significant sum of money from Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitchell). However, seeing how Saturday Night Live did a whole sketch about how an angry mob should have seized Mr. Potter, we thought that was maybe a bit too obvious of a choice. Plus, Mr. Potter not being punished for his crimes is actually fairly consistent with the film's themes about money and power keeping the wealthy elite away from harm.

Why It's A Wonderful Life Was Colorized (& When) Explained
Image
It's a Wonderful Life, originally released in black and white, was later re-released in color due to the popularity of colorized films. Director Frank Capra decided to colorize the movie after seeing the success of a colorized Cary Grant film, Topper. The film entered the public domain in the 1970s, leading to multiple studios releasing their own colorized versions, which sparked controversy among fans who preferred the original black-and-white version.

The classic version of It's a Wonderful Life is in black and white since that medium was the norm when the movie premiered in 1946. However, once colored pictures became easier to produce and more popular, the Christmas film was re-released in color. Now, audiences have the option of viewing the movie in black and white or in color. Most airings of It's a Wonderful Life typically stick to the original version of the holiday classic, though.
