‘The Gilded Age’ Scores A Fourth Consecutive Series High Audience With Season 3’s Penultimate Episode
Image
The Gilded Age just keeps reaching new heights as it heads toward its Season 3 finale.

The penultimate episode drew 4.6M viewers in the three days since it debuted on HBO on Sunday, setting another series record, per Warner Bros. Discovery. This is now the fourth consecutive week that the third season has managed a new series high audience.

Ahead of Sunday’s finale, the show is apparently drawing in new viewers at a record pace. The company says that The Gilded Age is currently adding viewers at a rate nearly 50% higher than in previous seasons.

Of course, newcomers are playing catch up, so much of this viewership is actually boosting the previous seasons, too. Wbd says that Season 1 viewership was up approximately 30% last week compared to the same week leading into last season’s Episode 7.

This bodes incredibly well for the show’s fourth season, as it has already received a renewal from HBO.

‘The Gilded Age’ Renewed For Season 4 By HBO
Image
HBO has handed a Season 4 renewal to Julian Fellowes’ period drama The Gilded Age. The pickup comes ahead of the Season 3 finale on August 10, which will wrap some storylines while setting up more drama and intrigue.

The Gilded Age, which leans into the New York theater community for its strong — and expansive — ensemble cast, has been a true word-of-mouth phenomenon. Launching on HBO’s lower-profile Monday night, it defied the odds and drew a solid viewership to earn a Season 2 renewal. Moving to HBO’s marquee Sunday night, The Gilded Age has been on an upswing since, finding a new gear with its current third season.

Premiere-night viewing has grown for five consecutive weeks, with Episode 5 drawing a new series high of 4 million U.S. cross-platform viewers within its first three days of availability. It was accompanied by a new weekly viewership high on HBO Max. Season-to-season, The Gilded Age...

How ‘The Gilded Age’ Newcomer Jordan Donica Charmed His Way Into the Role of Winning Peggy’s Heart
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season three, episode five of The Gilded Age.]

Broadway actor Jordan Donica’s arrival as Dr. William Kirkland has spiced up Peggy Scott’s love life on The Gilded Age.

What started as a house call to treat his mentor’s daughter from a debilitating cold has blossomed into one of the HBO’s hit period drama’s hottest romances. Since his introduction in episode two (“What the Papers Say”), Dr. Kirkland has become a fixture. Peggy (a role Denée Benton has made a fan-favorite) and her mother Dorothy’s (Audra McDonald) visit to their cousin Athena (Jessica Frances Dukes) in Newport, Rhode Island, where his family has long maintained a home, in episode three (“Love Is Never Easy’) solidified his presence. From the moment Dr. Kirkland knew Peggy was nearby, he reached out with a letter requesting permission to “call on her.” That led to a romantic get-to-know-you stroll, parasol and all, by the...

Video: Audra McDonald, Denée Benton, & More Discuss Portrayal of Black Elite in The Gilded Age
Image
A new behind-the-scenes video has been released for The Gilded Age, featuring interviews with cast members and Broadway alums Audra McDonald, Phylicia Rashad, Denée Benton, and Jordan Donica. These stars, along with executive producers from the show, discuss the exploration of Black elite social dynamics as presented in the series. Taking place in the 1880s, Season 3 introduces the Kirkland family, played by Rashad, Donica, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Their portrayal contrasts with the Scotts, offering a nuanced look at the Black experience during the Gilded Age. "It's important that we have the Scotts and the Kirklands engage with one another because it allows us a different portal into the Black elite," says co-executive producer Erica Armstrong...

‘The Gilded Age’ Stars on How Mrs. Kirkland & Colorism Will Impact Peggy & William’s Courtship
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 3, “Love Is Never Easy.”] The Gilded Age portrays the Black elite of 1880s New York City in a way never before seen on TV, and Season 3 has allowed the HBO period drama to dive into its most nuanced depiction of this society yet through the inclusion of colorism and intersectional feminism storylines. Episode 3, which aired on Sunday, July 6, began Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) and Dr. William Kirkland’s (Jordan Donica) courtship, leading to each of their families meeting at a party in Newport, Rhode Island. Played by Phylicia Rashad, Mrs. Kirkland is essentially the Mrs. Astor (Donna Murphy) of this community, meaning she has extremely high expectations for her son’s future marriage. Her husband, Mr. Kirkland, is played by Brian Stokes Mitchell. The Kirklands and Scotts first meeting marked a reunion for Audra McDonald (Mrs. Scott) and Mitchell, who costarred in the original Broadway...

‘The Gilded Age’ Star Denée Benton Talks Peggy’s New Romance, Sparring With Phylicia Rashad: She’s the ‘Agnes of Newport’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Gilded Age Season 3, Episode 3.”

“The Gilded Age” hard-launched a new romantic interest for Peggy Scott, bringing a whole family of baggage along with him.

Sparks flew almost immediately between Peggy (Denée Benton) and Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica) after he treated her severe case of pneumonia earlier in Season 3. But a trip to the beach town of Newport in Episode 3, titled “Love Is Never Easy,” sealed the start of their courtship after the doctor invited Peggy on a walk along the cliffs.

“That was such a beautiful day, truly, because it actually does look as stunning as it does in the episode,” Benton told TheWrap of filming the idyllic first date. “To see it with us in those really vibrant costumes, and all the other Black couples and their costumes like eating grapes and sitting, it was transporting.”

Newport Mansions, Power Shifts Headline The Gilded Age’s Third Season
Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Cynthia Nixon, Louisa Jacobson, Morgan Spector, Carrie Coon, and Denée Benton in The Gilded Age (2022)
With its ballroom doors swinging open again, HBO’s The Gilded Age returns for a third season on 22 June, carrying the story from Manhattan to Newport, Rhode Island, where filming inside landmarks such as Marble House and Rosecliff gives the resort its biggest screen role yet.

Season two’s moderate but steady audience—0.05 in adults 18-49 and 643,000 same-day viewers—convinced HBO to green-light a new run the morning after last year’s finale.

Creator Julian Fellowes and co-showrunner Sonja Warfield now explore what happens after society’s gates swing shut behind the ambitious, focusing on marriages, money and a divorce that could spell social ruin in a world where no-fault separation is still decades away.

Power shifts inside the Van Rhijn townhouse when newly wealthy Ada Brook seizes the household reins, a turn star Christine Baranski calls “a spectacular psychological shift” for her once-dominant sister Agnes.

Cynthia Nixon describes Ada as “a woman-child…...

“There Will Be Hurdles”: ‘The Gilded Age’ Producer Dishes on the Complicated Romances of Season 3
Image
The Gilded Ageprovides plenty of drama, ambition, and romance even as it explores the lavish lives of the elite members of New York society in the 1880s. There is much to get into with these high-class individuals as they scheme and plot to gain advantages where applicable. The show is headed towards a third season which is set to premiere this summer and there will be lots of relationships that need sorting out. From the budding romance between Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and Larry (Harry Richardson), the heartwarming dynamic established between Mrs. Bruce (Celia Keenan-Bolger) and Mr. Borden (Douglas Sills), and the beautiful and tragic marriage of Ada (Cynthia Nixon) and Luke Forte (Robert Sean Leonard), romance is certainly going to be on the burner when the series returns for Season 3.

Despite all these other intriguing and complex romances, none quite lit things up in The Gilded Age scene, like George...

‘The Gilded Age’ Teases Marriage and Upheaval in Season 3
Image
HBO is promising more high-society unrest in season three of The Gilded Age.

The network has set a June 22 premiere date released a first teaser for the drama’s forthcoming season. The teaser shows Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) sticking to her “too much is never enough” ethos and preparing to marry off her daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) — a prospect which, judging by Farmiga’s expression in a few shots in the minute-long clip, doesn’t excite Gladys very much.

Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), meanwhile, expresses an opposite view: “Some people want to marry for love. I know I do,” she says — to which her aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) replies, “I don’t understand.” Watch the teaser below.

The season logline for season three of The Gilded Age reads, “Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society.

Why ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 won’t be eligible for any Emmys this year
Image
After an 18-month break, get ready to give a warm welcome back to Bertha, Marian, Agnes, Ada, and the rest of The Gilded Age gang. Season 3 will premiere the first of eight episodes in June, HBO announced today, six months after Season 2 wrapped on Dec. 17, 2023. Although a specific launch day wasn't announced, a June premiere date for the new season means it won't be eligible for the current 2025 Emmys cycle, whose cutoff is May 31. Instead, Gilded Age Season 3 will compete at the 2026 Emmy Awards.

Returning cast members for the 1880s period piece that pits "new money" New Yorkers against the established wealthy, include Carrie Coon (hot off her White Lotus Emmy buzz) as Bertha Russell, Christine Baranski as Agnes van Rhijn, Cynthia Nixon as Ada Forte, Morgan Spector as George Russell, Louisa Jacobson as Marian Brook, Denée Benton as Peggy Scott, Taissa Farmiga as Gladys Russell, Harry Richardson as Larry Russell,...

Image
Those actors scurrying around at the festival in Palm Springs would have been better served witnessing masterclasses in artistry from Viola Davis and Ted Danson, the recipients of Golden Globes honors on Friday night.

Not only that, there was Mary Steenburgen and Meryl Streep, too.

And Carol Burnett and Jane Fonda!

Streep spoke of her first meeting with Davis. It was when the two women met at the table read for the screen version of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt.

Streep admitted that that she’d been a little out of sorts because playwright Tony Kushner had hailed Davis as his “favorite actor in the whole world.”

But then Streep sat opposite Davis at the read-through, with Amy Adams and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, and saw exactly what Kushner had meant.

10 Great Horror TV Shows Recommended By Stephen King
Image
Stephen King is a horror genre staple, and he often recommends TV shows or movies that he enjoys. He's best known for iconic horror novels such as The Shining and It, and has remained in the public spotlight for his books and adaptations of his work. Stephen King even has another book on the way, continuing a legacy that has scared readers for decades.

Because of his reputation in the horror genre, many trust his recommendations for different works, whether they be novels, TV shows, or even films. The genres of his recommendations often vary, but horror still seems to be the most consistent. Though many of King's books could still use sequels, his recommended shows such as Cabinet of Curiosities and Midnight Mass will have to do in the meantime.

Quick Links Was the Evil Series Finale Rushed? Evil Left Some Doors Open for a Fifth Season

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Evil After four seasons, the supernatural crime drama Evil came to a close this past August with a series finale that left fans wanting more. Often praised for its creative uniqueness among television shows, Evil deftly combined an exploration of faith and possession with the inherent evil that exists in the choices of man. The series' cancelation was announced in February, with Paramount+ announcing that the creators would be given just four additional episodes to wrap up the series. While fans may be disappointed with the strings left untied, this uncertain representation of finality is a rough though worthwhile ending to the series that speaks to the lingering question of what creates evil.

Starring Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Katja Herbers (Westworld), and Aasif Mandvi (A Series of Unfortunate Events...
