The Harlem Globetrotters On Gilligan's Island Almost Featured A Different Team

Though there are only three seasons of "Gilligan's Island," the CBS sitcom became hugely popular thanks in part to its frequent showings in syndication. The show debuted in 1964 and ran until '67, but it was shown widely throughout the '70s and '80s, helping establish it as one of TV's most familiar sitcoms.

But it wasn't just the show itself that gave "Gilligan's Island" its cultural recognition. Once the series wrapped up, it lived on in the form of two animated spin-offs: "Gilligan's Planet" and "The New Adventures of Gilligan." Most of the castaways from the S.S. Minnow — named as such for a hilarious reason — also returned in three live-action TV movies: "Rescue From Gilligan's Island" (1978), "The Castaways on Gilligan's Island" (1979), and "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" (1981).

In the latter, the original castaway characters returned to the...

‘Blood Delirium’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: John Phillip Law, Brigitte Christensen, Gordon Mitchell, Olinka Hardiman | Written and Directed by Sergio Bergonzelli

Sergio Bergonzelli’s Blood Delirium is a pulpy and eccentric exploration of madness, obsession, and gothic horror tropes, blending the grotesque with the surreal in a manner that is uniquely European. Released in 1988, this Italian horror oddity operates at the intersection of exploitation cinema and psychological thriller, offering viewers a bizarre and unsettling experience that defies conventional narrative expectations.

Blood Delirium tells the story of a deranged artist named Saint Simon (played with unnerving intensity by John Philip Law) who, after the death of his wife, spirals into madness. Living in a decaying mansion with a demented servant named Herman (Gordon Mitchell), Saint Simon becomes obsessed with creating “perfect” art through increasingly macabre means. The arrival of a woman who resembles his late wife plunges the characters into a spiral of murder, manipulation, and hallucination.

Arrow Video

Starring Barbara Nelli, Helga Liné, Franco Nero, Erica Blanc

Written by Giovanni Grimaldi, Bruno Corbucci

Directed by Massimo Pupillo, Alberto De Martino, Mino Guerrini, Damiano Damiani

The success of 1957’s I Vampiri, a grimly beautiful fantasy directed by Riccardo Freda and Mario Bava, provoked an unexpected trend in the country known for neo-realism; Italian horror films began to embrace the classical romanticism of Rebecca over the modernistic shocks of Psycho. Elegant nightmares like Bava’s Black Sunday cast their spell and soon this new breed of gothics—united by sumptuous black and white photography—dominated movie theaters with tbeir come-hither promise of seductive spirits and strategically lit negligees.

A few of these thrillers were more brazen in their approach—flaunting their teasing nudity and blood-soaked denouements, exploitation fare like Atom Age Vampire and The Playgirls and the Vampire took aim at...

‘White Fire’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Image
Stars: Robert Ginty, Fred Williamson, Belinda Mayne, Jess Hahn, Mirella Banti, Diana Goodman, Gordon Mitchell | Written and Directed by Jean-Marie Pallardy

White Fire, also known as Vivre Pour Survivre (the on-screen title of this new Arrow Video Blu-ray release) is a 1984 action film made in Turkey, by a French man, and features two superstars of exploitation cinema: Fred Williamson and Robert Ginty (The Exterminator). If that’s not a recipe for success I don’t know what is!

White Fire tells the story of brother and sister Bo (Ginty) and Inga (Belinda Mayne), two orphans turned jewel thieves who target the legendary ‘White Fire’ diamond — a priceless rock so hot it actually burns those who try to lay their hands on it! When tragedy strikes, Bo undertakes an outrageous plan involving plastic surgery and explosives to infiltrate the mine where the diamond awaits. Bo’s plan hits an unexpected snag...

Sandahl Bergman
‘She’ Blu-ray Review (Kino Lorber)
Sandahl Bergman
Stars: Sandahl Bergman, Gordon Mitchell, David Goss, Quin Kessler, Elena Wiedermann, Harrison Muller | Written and Directed by Avi Nesher

Written and directed by Avi Nesher (Doppelganger), She is loosely, and I do mean loosely, based on the novel by H. Rider Haggard. Fresh off her appearance in films like Conan the Barbarian and Red Sonja, Sandahl Bergman stars as the titular the beautiful warrior-queen who rules by the sword in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Women battle, men are used for ritual sex and sacrifice, but the arrival of three strangers plunges She into a nightmare quest for survival.

Together, She and her ill-matched companions cross the Forest of Yellow Death to encounter a tribe of innocents by day and man-eating werewolves by night, and an invisible sailor who literally multiplies when attacked. They make a last stand on Blood Bridge against The Norks, a master warrior tribe that lives only by war and pillage.

Hercules in the Haunted World
Mario Bava excelled with at least five super sword ‘n’ sandal pictures — shooting two Hercules classics and directing two viking sagas in addition to this eye-popping mix of mythology and horror. Forget warring armies and casts of thousands. Bava places Reg Park, Christopher Lee, and several beautiful Italo actresses within his weird visual world of and hallucinatory imagery: swirling mists, intensely physical actors and retina-burning color. Kino’s disc carries three discrete versions on two discs, and a gotta-hear commentary by Tim Lucas. On your next trip to The Underworld, remember Not to trust what you see! Trust instead, uh, trust your … oh, just use the Force!

You've been Djangoed! Ten Spaghetti Cowboys that shaped the genre
Keeping up with his career plan of paying homage to every film genre going, Quentin Tarantino has moved onto the spaghetti western with Django Unchained (2012). It’s not a remake of the pasta classic Django (1966), or indeed a spaghetti western, but it has clearly taken its inspiration from those violent Italian productions that swamped the late sixties.

Hollywood may have dominated the field since the beginning of motion pictures but European westerns are not exactly new; the earliest known one was filmed in 1910. Sixties German cinema made good use of Kay May’s western heroes Shatterhand and Winnetou, and the British produced The Savage Guns (1961), Hannie Caulder (1971), A Town Called Bastard (1971), Catlow (1971), Chato’s Land (1972) and Eagle’s Wing (1979). When the genre showed signs of flagging in the mid-sixties, a clever Italian director named Sergio Leone took it upon himself to reinvent the western – spaghetti style!

What made the spaghettis...
