While it was on the air, Fairy Tail became one of the biggest shoneen anime series. Though it never competed with any of the Big 3, it earned a spot in the tier below them, mostly for its cool, yet quirky characters. It was easy for viewers to find a character they identified with, and even a good ship pairing they liked.
That said, while there were plenty of cool characters, Hiro Mashima also created a number of weird characters to populate his world. Having either weird designs, weird powers, or both, these characters made the series just as much as the main characters did. Any true fan of the series will recognize even the most obscure characters, often because they were so cartoonish they were hard to forget.
