While Star Trek: Enterprise certainly has its share of detractors, many fans enjoy it as a prequel to the original Star Trek series, where Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) heads up a crew that travels in Enterprise Nx-01, the first Starfleet vessel to achieve warp 5, nearly 100 years before the Ncc-1701 takes flight.
Over a 4-year run, the show featured some great guest stars who gave life to some memorable antagonists, so let’s take a look at a few that left a definite impact on the series and the franchise itself.
1. Dean Stockwell as Grat in “Detained”
In the episode “Detained” (S01E18), Hollywood veteran Dean Stockwell plays Colonel Grat, the head of a Suliban internment camp who imprisons Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) and the ship’s navigator, Travis Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery). The General Hospital cast and forces behind the scenes are paying tribute to their friend and colleague Leslie Charleson, who passed away on January 12 from a long illness. Charleson, who played Dr. Monica Quartermaine for 45 years, made a strong impact on those who knew her.
Honoring a Soap Opera Icon Behind the Scenes
Executive Producer Frank Valentini announced Charleson’s passing on Gh’s Instagram account. In the heartbreaking message, he talked about her legacy and how her character made a huge mark on the show. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson. Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set.

The USS Enterprise-d of Star Trek: The Next Generation was missing one element that every other Starship Enterprise has had. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his Enterprise crew, Tng ushered in a new golden era of Star Trek that lasted throughout the 1990s. With crew members like Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) and Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), the crew of Captain Picard's Enterprise became almost as popular as that of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner).
In both Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, each main character had a specific role to play on their Starship Enterprise. Both ships, for example, had Chief Medical Officers and Chief Engineers who were part of the main cast. But while the Enterprise of Tos had a dedicated helmsman in Lt. Best known for playing Lt. Commander Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, actor Michael Dorn also directed four episodes of Star Trek. Dorn is one of many Star Trek: DS9 actors who became directors. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko) and Rene Auberjonois (Constable Odo) each directed nine episodes of DS9. Tng's LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), and Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Duncan McNeill (Lt. Tom Paris) and Roxann Dawson (Lt. B'Elanna Torres) have all become successful television directors.
Many Star Trek actors, including Dorn, got their chance to direct episodes because Star Trek producer Rick Berman's "Director's School" let interested actors from 1990s Star Trek shows get hands-on experience as directors. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally making Star Trek: Enterprise more important. Originally airing from 2001 to 2005, Star Trek: Enterprise attempted to beat franchise fatigue with a prequel series set earlier in the Star Trek timeline. Star Trek: Enterprise starred Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer in command of the previously unknown Nx-01 Enterprise in the 2150s. Archer was joined by new characters in crew positions that were already familiar to Star Trek fans, like Ensign Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) handling communications, Chief Engineer Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), and Ensign Travis Mayweather (Anthony Montgomery) at the helm.
Although Star Trek: Enterprise followed a familiar format, Enterprise's awkward position as a Star Trek prequel meant it had a hard time fitting into Star Trek's shared universe organically. Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager benefited from a shared timeline, Star Trek character crossovers,...

From the beginning, one of the most integral elements of Star Trek has been the interplay between real-world social issues and science-fiction storytelling. Not only does this affect the themes of the stories that Star Trek tells, but it also creates a special relationship by integrating its characters directly with "real world" events.
Whether taking place in the modern day, recent past, or near future, many entries in this franchise have taken place in a world that is not yet the utopia that Gene Roddenberry envisioned. By crossing over into the real world, Star Trek gets to tell more grounded and human stories or find comedy in creating fish-out-of-water scenarios for beloved characters.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' crossover paid tribute to Enterprise and connected it to the 24th century in a heartfelt and clever way. The crossover honored Captain Jonathan Archer's crew and showed the admiration that Captain Pike and his team have for the earlier Enterprise pioneers. Fans of Star Trek: Enterprise appreciate the acknowledgment of the show's legacy in modern Star Trek.
My favorite parts of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' crossover were the callbacks to Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, and written by Kathryn Lyn and Bill Wolkoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 7, "Those Old Scientists" brought Star Trek: Lower Decks' Ensign Bradward Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Ensign Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) to the USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Strange New Worlds' crossover was a tribute to Star Trek fans, and, surprisingly, a loving ode to Star Trek: Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, the final season, is currently underway. The series debuted in 2017 and was used as the launch title for the streaming service CBS All Access, now rebranded Paramount+. It was also the first Star Trek series on television in 12 years following the conclusion of Star Trek: Enterprise back in 2005. While Paramount has spent nearly a decade trying to get Star Trek 4 out of development hell, the franchise has been going strong on Paramount+ with various series on the streaming service at different times of the year. Now, there is almost always a Star Trek series on the air at any given point.
Star Trek: Discovery is a fascinating case for the franchise, as it was originally conceived as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, but following the conclusion of Season 2 and starting in Season 3, the series jumped far into the future, the farthest point in the franchise history.

George Takei's childhood experiences in Japanese American internment camps influenced an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise called "Detained." The episode "Detained" addressed the issue of prejudice and drew a direct comparison to how Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated during World War 2. George Takei's role as Sulu in Star Trek allowed him to raise awareness of the internment camps and advocate for equal rights, reflecting his own personal experiences.

Captain Archer defended Nausicaans in "Fortunate Son" to prevent a conflict and save the Fortunate Son and its crew. Jean-Luc Picard was stabbed by Nausicaans and needed an artificial heart in "Samaritan Snare" and "Tapestry." Picard's artificial heart no longer matters as he now has a synthetic and positronic body in Star Trek: Picard seasons 2 and 3.
Star Trek: Enterprise's Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) actually defended the same aliens who stabbed Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) though the heart in Star Trek: The Next Generation. About 200 years separate the pioneering 22nd-century voyages of Captain Archer's Nx-01 Enterprise and the 24th-century explorations of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's USS Enterprise-d. The premise of Star Trek: Enterprise was flawed from the beginning as it failed to establish the ship as the only human vessel in space, thus lessening the drama of the show. The original idea of the show, where Enterprise would be the lone human vessel in deep space, was deemed more rugged and dangerous but was changed due to various factors, which resulted in a more predictable Star Trek series. Manny Coto's efforts to inject new energy and focus into Enterprise couldn't prevent its cancellation in season 4, but the prequel has gained a new audience in recent years through streaming.

Star Trek: Enterprise's Nx-01 Enterprise had grapplers instead of a tractor beam, which failed when they tried to save trapped crew members. Grapplers have gained renewed interest in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with Ensign Boimler and Lt. LA'an Noonien-Singh geeking out over them. It's unclear when Starfleet developed tractor beam technology, but it became commonplace by the time of Star Trek: Discovery and The Original Series.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 7, "Those Old Scientists," now streaming on Paramount+.
Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks joined forces in the rare crossover episode blending The Next Generation with early Star Trek. However, what makes "Those Old Scientists" more than the typical franchise celebration is how it embraces all eras of Star Trek, allowing the Enterprise era of the 22nd Century to save the timeline. Again.
Enterprise shares some creative DNA with Star Trek: Discovery and Strange New Worlds since all are prequels to The Original Series. In fact, the show is closer to Discovery in how it originally tried to distance itself from its franchise predecessors. At the time, the producers and audience were critical of the episodic, ship-adventure format that dominated the franchise. Ironically, Strange New Worlds is lauded for that precise story structure. If Michelle Yeoh's Star Trek: Section 31 movie involves time travel, it could delve into the very origins of the shadowy organization, which would mean a visit to Star Trek: Enterprise's era. In Section 31, Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh returns as Emperor Philippa Georgiou, the dangerous ex-despot of the Mirror Universe she played in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1-3. Georgiou joined Section 31 in Discovery season 2, and the upcoming Paramount+ original, made-for-streaming movie promises to make the Emperor face the sins of her past.
Emperor Georgiou is no stranger to time travel and reality jumping. As she was about to be overthrown from her role as absolute ruler of the Mirror Universe's Terran Empire in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, Georgiou followed Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) to Star Trek's Prime Timeline. Georgiou helped end the Klingon War of 2256/2257 before she joined Section 31 and helped the USS Discovery stop the rogue A.

Star Trek has no lack of hotshot starship helmsmen across its various movies and TV series, but which pilot is Starfleet's true top gun? One of the most important Starfleet Officers serving on a starship's bridge is the helmsman, the person responsible for piloting the ship throughout deep space, in and out of warp speed, and even within a Federation starbase. Some of Star Trek's most beloved characters are the helmsmen of the USS Enterprise or the eponymous starships of Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Discovery.
For a generation, Star Trek's definitive helmsman was Mr. Sulu (George Takei), the legendary pilot of the Starship Enterprise commanded by Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Interestingly, perhaps to avoid comparisons to Sulu, Star Trek: The Next Generation did not have a dedicated helmsman after season 1. In the first Tng season, Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was the Enterprise's pilot,...

Each "Star Trek" show is, despite its tendency to focus on starship and space station captains, an ensemble drama. Each series (the first two seasons of "Picard" notwithstanding) is about the workplace dynamic on board a space vessel, with characters of different backgrounds and personalities working together to solve crises. The characters may occasionally butt heads, but "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry (in)famously discouraged that sort of conflict, preferring to depict a future where everyone got along, or at least treated each other with professional respect.
The group dynamic of "Star Trek," however, occasionally led to a perhaps-unconscious reliance on certain archetypes. Each Trek show, for the most part, features Stalwart Captain, Approachable Guy, Sensitive Soul, Culture Shock Alien, The Muscle, The Broody Outsider, Impatient Weirdo, Nerdy Tech-Head, and Inexperienced Noob. These broad "types" could alternately be combined into a single character or spread among many, but one can...

Captain Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) memorably made pizza in Star Trek: Picard season 1, and his culinary skills were actually set up in the series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise. Riker was the star of Enterprise's final episode, for better or worse. "These Are The Voyages..." centered on then-Commander Riker consulting the crew of the Nx-01 Enterprise on the holodeck as he mulled over his moral dilemma in the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7 episode, "The Pegasus."
Riker and his wife, Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), as well as their young daughter, Kestra (Lulu Wilson), were welcome guest stars in Star Trek: Picard season 1. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Soji (Isa Briones) sought out the Troi-Rikers for sanctuary at their home on the planet Nepenthe. Riker quickly deduced that his former Captain was in trouble with the Romulans, while Deanna also sussed out that Soji was an android, and a more...

The series finale of Star Trek: Enterprise is the most maligned ending of any Star Trek show, but there are also a number of good things about “These Are The Voyages…” that have continually been overlooked. Star Trek: Enterprise ended its 4-season run in 2005, which also marked the end of the era of Star Trek produced by Rick Berman which began with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. The prequel series was plagued by low ratings on the Upn Network, and Enterprise was the first live-action Trek show since Star Trek: The Original Series not to run for 7 seasons.
The main problem with Star Trek: Enterprise’s series finale boils down to the episode’s premise: “These Are The Voyages…” revolves around Tng's Commander Will Riker. Those are the main grievances used to condemn “These Are The Voyages…” and the complaints are valid. Yet the finale is not without its strong points as well.

The makers of To The Journey: Looking Back on Star Trek: Voyager just shared their clip showing several Star Trek alumni, including George Takei, Mary Chieffo, Armin Shimmerman, Jeffrey Combs, Andrew Robinson, and Voyager stars Robert Beltran and Tim Russ as well, sitting in a decidedly space-agey chair for interviews. The reunion, as you can see, is a joyous one, as the interviewees clap along with the crew as they reunite to discuss the legacy of Star Trek.

I say at last, but I’m not sure it was at the top of anyone’s list of movie treasure troves. Anyway, if you’re feeling particularly trashy (there’s no shame in that), sit down for Unbelievable!!!!! in an online premiere this August 1st. The premiere will also come with a virtual convention.

Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes, longtime stars of “Days of Our Lives,” received a lifetime achievement award, as did veteran kids TV creators Sid and Marty Krofft.

Chandler Massey (“Days of Our Lives”) will win the Daytime Emmy for Best Supporting Actor according to our official predictions, which place him out front with leading odds of 4/5. Winners will be announced on Sunday night, April 29, after being decided by blue ribbon panels that watched sample performance reels. Gold Derby contributor Tony Ruiz and I watched all the submissions and agree that Massey is out front, but he’s not a slam dunk by any means. He faces tough competition. Watch our predictions slugfest above.
“Chandler Massey knows how to submit, clearly. He’s won three out of four times [for Best Younger Actor] and could easily go four-out-of-five,” says Ruiz about Massey’s performance as his character struggles with amnesia and assault. “There’s a lot of emotional range. I think the scene with the strangling … he’s spectacular in that scene, the kind of explosive anger than Emmy voters love.” I agree with Ruiz,...

Laura Wright has been a daytime TV star for 27 years, but she didn’t receive her first Daytime Emmy nomination until 2011, when she contended for and won Best Actress for playing Carly Corinthos on “General Hospital.” She’s now nominated for the fifth time in seven years for the role. Can she prevail again? The winners will be announced on April 29, but they’ve already been decided in the soap opera acting categories by blue ribbon panels that watched sample performance reels. Watch Wright’s submission above.
Wright’s reel consists of three separate storylines. In the first scene Carly confronts Sonny (Maurice Benard) about keeping a secret: Nelle (Best Younger Actress nominee Chloe Lanier) drugged Sonny and fooled him into thinking they had an affair as part of a revenge plot against Carly. Sonny knew about the scheme but kept his mouth shut and thus let Carly continue trusting...
