Fans of "The Good Wife" were left stunned Sunday (March 23) when Will Gardner's client Jeffrey Grant (guest star Hunter Parrish) crumbled under the pressure of being on trial for murder and stole a guard's gun, opening fire inside the courtroom. Gardner later died at the hospital.

Actor Josh Charles' exit seemingly comes out of nowhere, since the show managed to keep this completely under wraps. But it actually has been in the works since Season 4, when Charles asked to leave the show.

In the above video, Charles explains that he felt it was time to move on. "There's been a lot of people that have asked me what the reason is why I wanted to leave the show. I thought that I felt however much that I enjoyed the experience, that I was ready for the next chapter in my life, both creatively and personally," says Charles.

This week's "Good Wife" wasn't the high-octane episode that Season 5 has become known for, but it did set some very interesting wheels in motion for the second half of the season.

Case of the Week

Lemond Bishop is back, with the lawyer Lester in tow who deals with Bishop's less-than-legal activities -- played by the always-awesome Wallace Shawn. This time it's the DEA coming after Bishop. They've got testimony from a "witness" about Bishop transporting and storing bricks of cocaine.

However, it turns out the witness is a false evidence trail, which the DEA must construct when they receive information from Nsa wiretaps. That's "Parallel Construction, B****es."

The Nsa surveillance, if you'll recall, is the on-going storyline that dates back to the Lockhart/Gardner case of Danny Marwat from Season 3.

"The Good Wife" does not waste any time clearing up the cliffhanger from last year's fall finale and it turns out to be pretty much what we thought it was, thankfully. Glad to see the show didn't go the cliched right we were fearing it might.

It turns out Marilyn's baby daddy is Peter Bogdanovich, the famous film director behind "The Last Picture Show" and "Paper Moon," who cameos in the episode as himself. Random, to be sure, but it's pretty delightful that he actually showed up in the episode.

"The Good Wife" Season 4 came to a dramatic finish Sunday (April 28), leaving us with several questions going into Season 5.

First, let's talk about that ending. We will admit to being completely fooled that Alicia was meeting Will -- and we were rolling our eyes a bit. It's not that we don't like Will and Alicia together, it's that we're tired of the back and forth. She had her dalliance with him, now Alicia either needs to leave Peter and go with Will, or choose to remain with Peter. The back and forth has to stop.

Part of the masterful fake-out was the way they shot Alicia leaving the election party. It was such a good call-back to "Foreign Affairs," the episode near the end of Season 2 where Peter wins the State's Attorney election and Alicia leaves the party crying because she has just found out about his affair with Kalinda.

It's hard to write a teaser preview for the "Good Wife" Season 4 finale -- it's so, so good and yet saying just about anything is spoiler-y. But trust us, from start to finish, it is an A+ episode and easily our favorite season finale the show has done yet.
