Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
Joe Manganiello remembers his friend, the late Paul Reubens, in a heartfelt moment during a new interview
Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
The new in-depth documentary, Pee-Wee As Himself, made a splash at Sundance as audiences were granted access to never-before-seen footage and a final interview with the Pee-Wee star himself — Paul Reubens. The documentary was recently added to HBO Max (is it time to call it that yet?) and features a soul-baring recount of events straight from Reubens, as well as interviews from close individuals, including sister Abby Rubenfeld, artists Gary Panter and Wayne White, actors Lynne Stewart, John Moody, Alison Mork, Natasha Lyonne, S. Epatha Merkerson, Laurence Fishburne, Debi Mazar, David Arquette, Laraine Newman, and Cassandra Peterson, and filmmakers Tim Burton and Judd Apatow.

The Hollywood Reporter recently spoke with Joe Manganiello while promoting his series, Deal or No Deal Island, when he reflected on his friend Reubens. Manganiello can be seen alongside Reubens in Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, and the actor stated, “I love Paul and I miss Paul a lot.

The ’Pee-wee as Himself’ Trailer Is a Party, and You’re Invited
Image
The man behind Pee-wee Herman, Paul Reubens (Blow), is ready to truly reveal himself. It’s just unfortunate that his definitive documentary, Pee-wee as Himself, had to come out posthumously.

The HBO Original two-part documentary directed by Matt Wolf premieres Friday, May 23 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on HBO. Put together, it’s a three-hour, 20-minute portrait of Reubens. And that’s exactly how the two parts will air on linear HBO — together. You can watch them however you want on Max.

Pee-wee as Himself is centered on “a soul-baring interview” with Reubens, per the synopsis, and is “a window into his never-before-discussed personal life.” It was a particularly lengthy soul-baring interview: Pee-wee as Himself is pieced together from more than 40 hours of interview footage filmed before Reubens’ death in 2023. Wolf also had at his disposal more than 1,000 hours of archival footage and “tens of thousands of never-before-seen photographs” from Reubens’ personal collections,...

Official Trailer for 'Pee-wee as Himself' Biopic Doc on Paul Reubens
Image
"He wanted people to see who he was as Paul." HBO has revealed the trailer for Pee-wee as Himself, a two-part documentary presentation coming to Max this May. "For the first time, meet the man behind the character." Starring Paul Reubens, about Paul Reubens, featuring Paul Reubens, in the definitive life story film examining Paul Reubens (and his iconic character Pee-wee Herman). The doc starts out revisiting Reubens' childhood and his desire to be an actor, inspired by the iconic TV shows like "Howdy Doody," "Captain Kangaroo," and "I Love Lucy." Subsuming himself into the character of Pee-wee, Reubens hides his personal life, and recognizes too late that fame makes for a complicated companion... Later, Reubens talks candidly about his fame as a pop culture icon and the lows he endured as he faced rumors, vilification, and the vitriol of the media. With guests including Abby Rubenfeld, Gary Panter Wayne White,...

Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
Pee-wee as Himself to Debut on HBO and Max on May 23
Paul Reubens in Pee-wee as Himself (2025)
The HBO Original two-part documentary Pee-wee as Himself, directed by Matt Wolf (HBO’s The Stroll), debuts Friday, May 23 (8:00 p.m.-11:20 p.m. Et/Pt) with both parts airing back-to-back on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.

Driven by a soul-baring interview with Paul Reubens, the man behind the iconic character Pee-wee Herman, Pee-wee as Himself is the definitive portrait of the comedic performer, and a window into his never-before-discussed personal life.

Determined to correct the record and tell the factual story of his life, Reubens excavates his kaleidoscopic influences, origins in the circus and avant-garde performance theater, and career choices, while reflecting on the reasoning behind, and the consequences of, severing his beloved alter ego from his authentic self.

Woven together from over 40 hours of interview footage filmed before Reubens’ premature death in 2023, 1,000 hours of archival footage, and tens of thousands of never-before-seen photographs from his personal collections,...

John Moody
FoxNews.com Executive Editor John Moody is none too pleased about the U.S. Olympic Committee’s commitment to diversity in this year’s Winter games in PyeongChang, South Korea. In a take on FoxNews.com, Moody blasted the Usoc, who praised the team’s diversity in this Washington Post story from earlier this week. “Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger.’ It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to ‘Darker, Gayer, Different.’ If your goal is to win medals, that won’t work,” Moody wrote of the team’s drive to increase representations for Asian, African-American and...

Playhouse Bound
In each episode of the Emmy-winning Saturday morning CBS series "Pee-wee's Playhouse" (1986–91), there was a "secret word of the day." When someone uttered it, everyone else would scream. If there's a secret word for the show's star, Paul Reubens, right now, it would be "comeback."The actor has spent the past year prepping his brand-new stage show, "The Pee-wee Herman Show," running through Feb. 7 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. The ambitious production features 11 actors and 20 puppets—a first for Reubens, who on his series relied on the magic of editing to bring puppets like Pterri, Chairry, Conky, Globey, and Magic Screen to life. Reubens says the tension and anxiety of creating the live show are palpable, and he has one question on his mind: Are the puppets going to perform?"This show is in many ways like the series, except we never did that live," says Reubens. "A...

Pee-wee Herman creator Paul Reubens wants ‘Playhouse’ movie, reintroduce character to new generation
Peace, love, jobs, forget all that stuff. What the world needs now, is Pee-wee, sweet Pee-wee.

In a recent interview with the AP, Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-wee Herman, talked about his plans to reintroduce his iconic character back into society. His first step? His live stage show The Pee-Wee Herman Show. His second step? A feature-length film:

“Well, you know, I really want to make a movie version of The Playhouse, my Saturday morning kid show. [The live show] seemed like a great way to do it: Reintroduce it, get back out there, introduce Pee-wee to the new generation that didn’t know about it,” he said.

His Saturday morning TV show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, was canned in 1991 when Reubens was arrested for indecent exposure.

The Pee-wee Herman Show will run at the Club Nokia theater in Los Angeles from January 12th to February 7th. It will feature 20 puppets, along with many original cast members,...
