Moor

Cadet - Marko Stojiljkovic - 19692
Adilkhan Yerzhanov
Last year, Adilkhan Yerzhanov completed and presented no less than three features which all featured Anna Starchenko in prominent roles and enjoyed premieres at big festivals. Unlike Steppenwolf (premiered at Rotterdam) and Moor (premiered at Tallinn Black Nights) that got some international attention, Cadet flew pretty much under the critics’ radar. After its premiere at Tokyo, the film was shown at this year’s Berlinale (Forum section), Hong Kong and Haapsalu White Nights.

Cadet should serve as a companion piece, maybe even a weird prequel to Moor in some stretched movie universe, but there is a bit of genre difference here. Yerzhanov, known for his unique combination of genre approach and “guerilla” production conditions usually sticks to the mixture of drama, dark comedy, action, thriller and neo-western, but now he plunges straight to horror. Echoes of the now popular “elevated” approach to the genre are to be heard in a.

Denzel Washington
Othello | Denzel Washington set for new movie
Denzel Washington
After breaking records on Broadway, Denzel Washington is set to play Othello in a brand new feature film adaptation.

Denzel Washington has already brought us one memorable turn as a doomed Shakespearean hero in recent years, with his take on the ambitious and violent usurper Macbeth in Apple’s The Tragedy Of Macbeth collaborating with director Joel Coen.

However, following a highly successful opening on Broadway which has broken the record for the highest opening week gross ever, it looks as though his stage version of Othello may be making the same transition.

This isn’t entirely new news, given that Washington publicly introduced the idea of playing Othello back in November on The Today Show while out and about promoting Gladiator II. We wondered at the time if that meant that Washington was being lined up to take the title role opposite Daniel Craig in Barbara Broccoli’s planned take on the play,...

Jennifer Lopez Brings Child Emme, 17, to Broadway's 'Othello' Opening Night in Rare Outing
Image
Jennifer Lopez made a rare appearance with her child, Emme, 17!

The pair hit up opening night of the Shakespeare play Othello on Broadway at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday (March 23) in New York City. The play stars Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal.

In the Shakespeare play, Denzel, a Tony and Academy Award winner, stars as Othello, “the noble Moor of Venice and commanding warrior-general. Opposite him, Tony & Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal portrays Iago, the ambitious lieutenant and masterful manipulator. Spurned for promotion, Iago’s relentless quest for vengeance against Othello and his wife, Desdemona (portrayed by Molly Osborne), plunges them into a shocking web of deception and betrayal.”

Othello runs through June 8 in New York City. You can buy tickets while they’re still available – it’s a super hot item and they won’t be around long!

‘Othello’ With Denzel Washington & Jake Gyllenhaal: Once Again Iago Gets The Last Laugh – Broadway Review
Image
Othello

Opening night: March 23, 2025

Venue: Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre

Written by: William Shakespeare

Directed by: Kenny Leon

Cast: Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Molly Osborne, Andrew Burnap, Anthony Michael Lopez, Daniel Pearce, Kimber Elayne Sprawl, Neal Bledsoe, Julee Cerda, Ezra Knight, Gene Gillette, Rob Heaps, and William Connell, Ty Fanning, Ben Graney, Daniel Reece, Christina Sajous, Greg Wood, with swing Abiola Obatolu.

Running time: 2 hr 35 min (with intermission)

Deadline’s takeaway: Othello, director Kenny Leon’s new Broadway staging of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies starring two of our greatest actors – Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal – in two of the Bard’s best roles doesn’t take too long to recover from an odd misstep: the projection of words onto a back wall suggesting the time is The Near Future. The modern-dress production – a practice that’s become so common among stagings of Shakespeare over recent decades that the disclaimer is anything but necessary.

Suburban Fury Review: Unraveling the Complexity of Sara Jane Moore
Image
Sara Jane Moore is a normal name for a person with a very interesting story. Her life was a tapestry of suburban normalcy, tumultuous relationships, and surprising radicalism because she was born in West Virginia in 1930. She had been through five marriages and a time as an FBI informant before she tried to kill President Gerald Ford on September 22, 1975.

On that terrible afternoon in San Francisco, Moore hid herself in a crowd with a. 38-caliber pistol because she thought her action would show how bad American democracy was. The shots she fired, which barely missed Ford, were a desperate cry for attention in a society that didn’t always listen to women.

This attempt, which happened just 17 days after Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme’s, made the nation confront a scary truth: disillusionment can lead to violence. Moore’s actions symbolized a generation’s anger, revealing the lengths one might go for...

The 10 Best Cannon Films
Image
If you were a movie fan in the 1980s, then you have at least a little soft spot for the Cannon Group. Walk through any video store, and you’d be greeted by covers featuring oiled up men, steely ninjas, and so many guns. If you wanted low-quality, instantly satisfying trash, you looked for the Cannon logo.

Although it had been around since the late 1960s, Cannon became Cannon in 1979, when Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus took over, ushering in a golden age of low-budget, deeply satisfying shlock. Under the cousins’ reign, the Cannon Group pumped out movie after movie, hitting its peak in 1984, when it put out 42 features in one year. So dominant was Cannon that they very nearly produced a Spider-Man movie directed by none other than James Cameron. However, that same hubris drove the cousins to overreach, and after the flop of their big-budget play...
