An ex-EA boss and former head of PlayStation have pondered whether the cost of exclusive games hardware might spell doom for consoles.

The recent spate of industry layoffs, and the sheer costs involved in making both games and hardware, seems to have left two of videogaming’s big-name executives mulling the future of the humble console.

First up, let’s go over to Peter Moore, who for years was a senior executive at Electronic Arts, and was also head of Xbox at Microsoft for a time. When asked by IGN whether the current generation of consoles might be the last, Moore replied, “I think it’s a real serious question that’s being asked I’m sure in Tokyo, in Redmond, Washington, in Kyoto. That’s what everybody’s working on right now, because when you start off that next generation, you’ve got to be ready to absorb billions of dollars in losses.

Over the years, Microsoft’s Xbox has developed and evolved in many ways. From rising trends in technology to moving away from exclusivity, the company has seen several changes in how it envisions the future, particularly the consoles.

It may seem a little surprising, but there was a point in the console’s life cycle when the company wanted to move away from it entirely. There was little hope for the future, and the team didn’t really know how things would pan out. Fortunately, that isn’t the case now.

The Former Head of Xbox Has Been Vocal About Things It’s hard to imagine the last few years without certain consoles.

An interview with IGN goes on to dive into Peter Moore’s history back when he was leading Xbox. This was around the time of the Xbox 360, and console gaming was on the rise. Or, that’s what gamers believe universally.

In an interview with IGN, former Xbox executive Peter Moore commented on Xbox’s decision to port formerly exclusive titles to other platforms as well as the rumors that the company is considering exiting the video game hardware market. While Moore doesn’t reveal much new information about those reports, he does paint a somewhat grim future for the future of the console industry.

“Yeah, well the numbers don’t lie. Let’s not forget hardware is a messy business,” Moore says. “If you extract hardware and look at the P&l (profit and loss) on its own, it’s brutal, but it’s the facilitator to the software and services that drive the industry. You’ve got a generation coming through now, and this is the concern maybe Phil’s talking about, that’s more likely to be utilizing their smartphone for everything, including gaming.”

Some great news for exhibition Monday morning: Amazon Studios is getting back into the wide theatrical-release business with Ben Affleck’s Nike movie Air, starring his fellow Good Will Hunting co-Oscar winner Matt Damon.

Air will get a global theatrical release on Wednesday, April 5, heading into the lucrative Easter weekend. This is the first wide theatrical release from Amazon since its Sundance acquisition, Mindy Kaling’s Late Night, which had a wide summer release in 2019.

I hear Air will have a longer theatrical window than Amazon Studios’ recent limited theatrical releases, before hitting Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. It truly is a first-of-its-kind arrangement for the studio as Amazon will distribute the film globally, with Warner Bros. Pictures handling international as part of its distribution pact with Amazon’s MGM. Amazon Studios only had U.S. on Late Night, not global rights.
