Slashers aren’t my personal favorite sub-genre—they’re high up there—but I do consider them to be perhaps the most significant of the horror family for one particular reason…at one point or another, just about every teenager encounters them. Everything from Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street to more recent fare such as the Fear Street trilogy, these films about teens confronting sex, drugs and death, they speak to a pivotal moment in our lives that allows them to resonate during a crucial age. Of course, it helps that they also tend to be pretty damn fun.
Every generation has that handful of slasher films that were important to them. I grew up in the 90s, so the big one for me was Scream, Wes Craven’s brilliant meta movie that managed to be scary while poking fun at the formulaic tropes that had developed over the years.

Seated behind his organ at Stax Records’ recording studio in Memphis in the Sixties, Booker T. Jones was a first-hand witness to musical history. As part of Booker T. and the Mg’s, Stax’s house band, Jones played on soul landmarks by Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Carla Thomas and especially Sam & Dave. Two days ago, Jones heard, like most of the world, that Sam Moore had died at the age of 89, depriving American music of another legend. (His on-and-off musical partner Dave Prater died in 1988.)

Sam Moore, one-half of the Grammy-winning R&b duo Sam & Dave behind ’60s hits “Soul Man,” “Hold On I’m Coming” and “I Thank You,” died this morning in Coral Gables, Fla. at the age of 89.
The cause of death was listed as complications recovering from surgery.
Born on October, 12, 1935, Moore grew up in Miami’s Overtown and Liberty City neighborhoods and began his musical journey in church. Upon becoming the singing Mc and talent show host at Miami’s King O’ Hearts Club, he met Dave Prater, a local baker who tried out for the club’s talent show. Thus was the genesis of Sam & Dave, who were eventually inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
After being discovered in late 1964 at the club, where they had become locally known, Sam & Dave were signed to Atlantic Records. Jerry Wexler loaned the duo to Atlantic’s southern production arm,...

Sam Moore, one-half of the legendary soul group Sam & Dave, known for their iconic hits including “Soul Man” and “Hold On I’m Coming,” has died at the age of 89.
According to Roger Friedman of Showbiz 411, Moore passed away on Friday, January 10th due to complications from a recent surgery.
A native of Miami, Moore began singing in his local church and briefly considered pursuing a career in gospel music. However, he had a change of heart after seeing Jackie Wilson perform in concert and shifted his focus to pop and soul. He met future collaborator, Dave Prater, at a talent show, and together they began recording music as Sam & Dave. By 1965, the duo signed a record contract with Atlantic Records and were subsequently “loaned out” to Stax Records, through which they released their biggest hits. In 1968, Sam & Dave appeared at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memorial concert at Madison Square Garden.

Donald Trump is guilty of many crimes (starting with at least 34 felonies, to be exact), and one of them is questionable taste in music. We say “questionable,” not “bad,” because while the song choices at his campaign rallies are often fine in themselves, the former president has the nasty habit of playing them without getting permission from the relevant copyright holders. The latest example: He’s just been hit with a cease-and-desist letter from the estate of Isaac Hayes, insisting that Trump stop playing “Hold On, I’m Coming” immediately...

Another week, another episode of Aew: Dark which emanates from Grand Rapids, Michigan – which means this was taped at the same time as this past weekend’s Battle of the Belts special. We’ve got Taz and Excalibur on commentary as usual so let’s get to the action!
Match #1: Private Party, The Butcher & The Blade def. Isaiah Broner, James Alexander, Brayden Lee, & Sam Moore
My Thoughts: So we open Dark with an 8-man quasi-squash match. Hey, at least Private Party, The Butcher & The Blade are getting “TV” time right? Right..? It seems both teams are floundering somewhat after the end of the Hfo/Ahfo so to see them in action is good, even more so when the in-ring action is good too!
My Score: 2.5 out of 5 Match #2: Anna Jay A.S. def. Megan Meyers
My Thoughts: Anna Jay gets a new name and new attitude… Hopefully her...

How the 1940s standard “Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe” failed to be adapted into a Joe Biden campaign song until now is a mystery, but Cher recognized the obvious pairing of classic song and candidate and has recorded her rewrite of the tune, which was originally sung by Ethel Waters in the 1943 film “Cabin in the Sky.”
The song, with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg, was nominated for an Oscar after Waters sang it in the Black-themed Vincente Minnelli film. Many of the original lyrics would not do — Waters refers to “little Joe” in the film version, which sounds more like a nickname Donald Trump would apply to the candidate than something they’d want in a campaign anthem. So that reference gets changed to “president Joe” in Cher’s version, among other alterations.

Country Music Hall of Fame, Grand Ole Opry member and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels passed away this morning, Monday, July 6th at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee.
Doctors determined the cause of death was a hemorrhagic stroke. Daniels was 83.
Charlie Daniels was a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known for his contributions to Southern rock and bluegrass in addition to country. From his Dove Award-winning gospel albums to his genre-defining southern rock anthems and his Cma Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. An outspoken patriot, beloved mentor, and a true road warrior, Daniels parlayed his passion for music into a multi-platinum career and a spotlight supporting the military, underprivileged children, and others in need. The Charlie Daniels Band has long populated radio with memorable hits such as the signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

For generations of aspiring musicians from the Deep South, country music and R&b are inextricably linked. That was part of the inspiration for a unique blending of performers from both genres for a duets album and corresponding PBS TV special in March of 1994. Rhythm, Country and Blues, released on the McA Nashville label, featured combinations of like-minded artists, one from country and one from R&b, interpreting songs from both genres.

Clint Eastwood’s daughter Alison Eastwood was done with acting after appearing in 2014’s “Finding Harmony.”
Or so she thought.
It was a Friday night and she and her husband were heading to dinner when her father’s producer Sam Moore called. “He [says], ‘You know, your dad wants you to do this film,” Alison recalls. “I almost threw up. [My husband] was like, ’Is everything Ok? Did somebody die?’ I’m like, ‘No, I just don’t feel very well.’ I retired from acting and I sort of threw in the towel and decided to focus on a lot of different things so I thought, why does he want me?”
The movie is the upcoming “The Mule,” which Clint Eastwood directed and stars in. Alison plays his — what else? — daughter in this true story about a 90-year-old who is caught smuggling $3 million worth of cocaine through Michigan for a Mexican drug cartel.

Singer-songwriter Tony Joe White, a prolific tunesmith whose swamp-soaked 1968 pop hit “Polk Salad Annie,” reflected his Louisiana upbringing, died yesterday, Wednesday, October 24th, of natural causes at his home in Leipers Fork, Tennessee, just outside Nashville. He was 75.
White, who had a Top Ten record with “Polk Salad Annie,” also saw it popularized by Elvis Presley. He was also perhaps best known as the writer of the deeply atmospheric and soulful “Rainy Night in Georgia,” a Number Four pop hit for Brook Benton in 1970 and covered by a number of...

Beach Boys singer Mike Love was at the White House to watch Donald Trump sign the Music Modernization Act into law, and when he stepped up to the podium he went way off topic to heap praise onto the president for his supposed effort to help Whitney Houston in her time of need.
“Thank you so much for your support of music historically,” he said. “I remember you tired your best to help get Whitney Houston in some kind of shape. I remember being at Mar-a-Lago with this guy right here.

I hear people ask, “Who’s gonna be the next queen?” Shut up! Aretha Franklin was the one. She could take a jazz song and make it Aretha. She could take blues and make it Aretha. Puccini’s aria “Nessun Dorma”: She could make it Aretha. There were only two people who could do that — her and Ray Charles.
At the Grammys in 1998, when Pavarotti had a cold and canceled, the producers had an emergency on their hands. They asked: Could she do “Nessun Dorma”? She had been studying opera and she had sung the aria two nights earlier at the MusiCares dinner. That first night, she did it in her key, with her arrangement. But when she was called to fill in for Pavarotti at the Grammys, with almost no rehearsal, she had to do it in his key, with his arrangement. She’d always been great, but...
