Warners knocks us out with a beautifully remastered Rko noir. Nicholas Ray's crime tale is like no other, a meditation on human need and loneliness. It's a noir with a cautiously positive, hopeful twist. The Warner Archive is known for pleasant surprises, but this one is a real thrill -- one of the very best Rko films noir, reissued in a much-needed beautiful restoration.

Reportedly a resident at the Motion Picture and Television Home in Woodland Hills, Audrey Totter would have turned 96 on Dec. 20. Born in Joliet, Illinois, Audrey Totter began her show business career on radio. She landed an MGM contract in the mid-’40s, playing bit roles in several of the studio’s productions, e.g., the Clark Gable-Greer Garson pairing Adventure (1945), the Hedy Lamarr-Robert Walker-June Allyson threesome Her Highness and the Bellboy (1945), and, as an adventurous hitchhiker riding with John Garfield,...

Until the day he died, I always called him "Daddy." He was Walter Harry Ebert, born in Urbana in 1902 of parents who had emmigrated from Germany. His father, Joseph, was a machinist working for the Peoria & Eastern Railway, known as the Big Four. Daddy would take me out to the Roundhouse on the north side of town to watch the big turntables turning steam engines around. In our kitchen, he always used a knife "your grandfather made from a single piece of steel."

I never met my grandparents, and that knife is the only thing of theirs I own. Once when I was visiting my parents' graves, I wandered over to my grandparents' graves, where we'd often left flowers on Memorial Day. I realized consciously for the first time, although I must have been told, that my grandfather was named Joseph. My middle name.

What Does Film Preservation Mean To You?: As of this writing, Friday morning February 12, 2010, 8:50 a.m. Eastern time, we are a couple of days from a very ambitious online film event: "For The Love of Film," a film-preservation themed blogathon hosted by the sites Self-Styled Siren and Ferdy on Film. The ambitiousness pertains not merely to content, but to a goal—there's a fund-raising component to the project.

And we are mere hours from another ambitious and exciting online film event: the live-streaming of a new restoration of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, put together, if I'm not mistaken, the redoubtable Frederick Murnau Foundation. "It's said that nearly an hour of footage, long thought to have been lost, has been added," enthuses Roger Ebert, who provides details of the virtual screening at his blog. I'll be watching.

Global phenom though it's been, the Korean New Wave has been as badly hit by the 2008 economic crisis as any national industry, a situation that opened the door in the last two years for a variety of dirt-cheap indies, most notoriously Yang Ik-joon's "Breathless," which took South Korea by storm. The far less flamboyant example is Noh Young-Seok's "Daytime Drinking," a peripatetic generation-z comedy that's as eventless, but as seductive and wistful, as a real afternoon boozing spree.

In fact, it's a difficult movie to stay sober for. The cultural context, provided neatly on the Canadian DVD notes by Asian film obsessive Grady Hendrix, is simply that Koreans drink a lot, and they drink a lot of soju (a cheap, low-amp, sweetened vodka potion, consumed at the rate of almost seven gallons per adult per year), and so movies like Noh's (and Hong Sang-soo's, among others) express a reality...

Doesn't matter if you're straight, gay, male or female, or anywhere inbetween, above or below: we love our women blonde, buxom, breathtaking and baaaaad! So to satisfy our (ahem!) peninsular obsessions, this year's edition of Noir City revives their immensely popular "Bad Girls of Film Noir" with a double-bill highlighting Cleo Moore: One Girl's Confession (1953) and Women's Prison (1955).
