‘The Unholy’ (2021) Movie Review: Barely a Passing Grade
Image
The Unholy is a horror movie directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It is based on the novel written by James Herbert.

A supernatural horror film about miracles and apparitions, with a lot of religion (Catholic this time) and some clichés that work in lightweight horror films that work in a film that treads a firm ground without any risks…

Plot of The Unholy

A journalist with no scruples on the hunt for a scoop runs into the miracle of an apparition… and something else.

Movie Review The Unholy (2021)

If you like religion themed films, then this one is just about okay, it has its film touch (a little too much if you have watched movies for some time). It has touches of The Exorcist, apparitions like in The Ring and many others. Here and there, reputed screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos directs his first feature film cleverly but staying...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan stars in trailer for ‘The Unholy’
The Unholy (2021)
Sony Pictures Releasing UK has debuted a new trailer for the horror film ‘The Unholy’ starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Gerry Fenn (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a disgraced journalist turned stringer-for-hire, of supernatural tabloid fodder, is sent to investigate a strange occurrence in a small farming community. A born sceptic, Fenn quickly dismisses the incident as just another benign story. But, before he writes it off as a hoax; Fenn witnesses a deaf, teenaged girl, Alice (Cricket Brown), whispering next to a petrified oak tree in the middle of a field. What follows, to his disbelief, is a series of inexplicable events that has the locals convinced Alice can perform miracles.

When word spreads that Alice’s power to heal is attributed to the Virgin Mary, it fans the flames of curiosity from those near and far to witness the miraculous occur firsthand. As the hopeful masses descend upon this off-the-beaten-path town,...

The Unholy (2021)
‘The Unholy’ Film Review: Miracles, Mayhem and Monotony in Meh Religious Thriller
The Unholy (2021)
There’s the germ of a provocative idea in “The Unholy” — namely, what if you took a religious-visitation movie like “The Song of Bernadette” or “The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima” and turned it into a horror movie? Had the film bothered, or dared, to pursue that notion to the fullest, “The Unholy” might be something other than the standard-issue, priests-versus-demonic-spirits thriller that it is.

You’ve seen this one before, countless times, with its superhero priests and seemingly omnipotent spirits who are somehow powerless against containment prayers and quick-thinking investigative journalists. On top of that, it’s a PG-13 horror movie, which takes excessive gore off the table, pushing the director to replace it with lukewarm jump scares.

The film’s opening sequence, set in 19th-century Massachusetts, offers a woman’s Pov. She’s accused of being possessed, then nailed to a tree and set on fire. The...

Sony Dates Horror Film ‘The Unholy’ For Easter Weekend
Image
With Easter weekend less than a month away, Sony announced today that it will be opening the Evan Spiliotopoulos’ Screen Gems supernatural PG-13 horror movie The Unholy on April 2.

The feature based on the James Herbert novel Shrine joins Warner Bros/Legendary’s theatrical release of Godzilla vs. Kong which is opening on Wednesday, March 31 (and also hitting HBO Max simultaneously) as the big wide releases for the holiday weekend. That period has traditionally been a robust time at the B.O. given how the frame coincides with spring break. During great pre-pandemic box office times, Warner Bros’ Batman v. Superman is the record B.O. opener for Easter weekend with $181M domestic, while Universal’s Furious 7 is second with $161.2M. There’s great hope in the industry that Los Angeles might have the go-ahead to reopen cinemas by Easter weekend. This past weekend, New York City reopened its...

Diamantino (2018)
Portugal’s Film Industry Gets a Funding Boost
Diamantino (2018)
Despite producing only around 15 feature films per year, Portuguese cinema has consistently won significant festival prizes.

In 2018, awards for Portuguese films included Cannes’ Critics’ Week winner, “Diamantino” by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, and “The Dead and the Others” by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, which took a Special Jury Prize at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

Portuguese filmmakers have survived through a mixture of dedication, creative ingenuity and co-productions. Amid economic crisis, in 2012, the situation seemed dire, with Portugal’s National Film and Audiovisual Institute (Ica) unable to open any funding lines.

However a 2012 film law, revised in 2014, provided new revenues for the Ica by introducing levies on subscription TV services. As a result, the Ica has been able to channel significant additional funding into the domestic industry, including new support programs for TV series and animation features.

Investment obligations for domestic broadcasters have also been upped including reinforced commitments for public broadcaster,...

Official Trailer for Brazilian Western 'O Matador' From Marcelo Galvão
"When you're born to kill, you have to have an empty mind." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a Brazilian western titled O Matador, telling the story of Cabeleira, a feared killer living in the countryside of Pernambuco State in the 1840's. Diogo Morgado stars as Cabeleira, a gunman who goes looking for his missing mentor but ends up working for a ruthless French land baron as a hired assassin. The cast includes Maria de Medeiros, Will Roberts, Etienne Chicot, Phil Miler, Marat Descartes, Mel Lisboa, and Paulo Gorgulho. The trailer has another English title, simply just The Killer, but I like O Matador better. This definitely seems like a gritty western, with plenty of violence and slick cinematography. Watch below. Here's the official trailer for Marcelo Galvão's O Matador, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In a lawless land, Shaggy (Diogo Morgado), investigates the whereabouts of the bandit, Seven...

Latest 'Hur' Remake Gets a Loud, Bombastic Trailer for the Fast and Furious Crowd
'Ben-Hur' 2016 with Jack Huston: Chariot race to the death. 'Ben-Hur' 2016 trailer: 'Gladiator' meets 'Fast Seven' meets 'Star Wars' meets… Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have released the trailer for their 2016 Ben-Hur remake (or reboot or readaptation) – a.k.a. Fast and Furious A.D., as one wag called it in an online comment. Instead of grandiose spectacle featuring at its core a “human” story with Christian overtones, this chariot-and-sandals epic is being sold as Gladiator meets Fast Seven meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand meets Star Wars – with Morgan Freeman's Sheik Ilderim as the Roman Empire's dreadlocked version of Alec Guinness' Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi. Say what you will, the trailer-makers sure know their target audience. And that's not the same crowd that would go check out what's usually referred to in the U.S. media as “faith” (i.e., Christian) movies. One assumes that particular audience segment will be getting...

The CW Kills The Messengers
And that’s a wrap – the lone question mark remaining on The CW’s lineup has been resolved, with word that freshman apocalyptic drama The Messengers will not be returning for a second season.

Lukewarm reviews and paltry ratings made cancellation very likely for the show, which followed a group of individuals tasked with tracking down the Devil himself and preventing the long-foretold end of days. Shantel VanSanten (One Tree Hill), Sofia Black-d’Elia (Gossip Girl), Joel Courtney (The Haunting Hour), Jd Pardo (Revolution) and Diogo Morgado (The Bible) all starred in the series.

The CW relies on its teen audience to tell it what they like, and the writing was on the wall for The Messengers when it failed to spark anywhere near as much interest as freshman series Jane the Virgin, The Flash or iZombie. That it premiered to a downright awful 1.2 million viewers and a 0.3 rating practically...

The Messengers: TV Show Cancelled; No Season Two for CW Series
You know that old line about "Please, don't shoot the messenger"? Well, The CW has done just that. The network has cancelled The Messengers after one season. Only three episodes have aired thus far.

On The Messengers TV show, a mysterious object plummets to Earth and explodes in a blinding flash. It sends out a shock wave that instantly connects five strangers. The move to cancel the series doesn't come as much of a surprise. The Messengers has performed quite poorly so far, even for a Friday night show. Last week's installment hit a new low with just 650,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic.

Diogo Morgado in The Messengers (2015)
'The Messengers' won't get a second season on The CW
Diogo Morgado in The Messengers (2015)
There will be no Second Coming for The CW's "The Messengers." Due to low ratings, unimpressive reviews and an impossible Friday time period, it was already a foregone conclusion, but now it's also official: "The Messengers" won't be back for a second season. Yes, it's a early for The CW to be prepared to go out on that limb, since only three episodes have aired. And yes, I'm already prepared for several people to talk about networks no longer giving shows time and whatnot. There are, however, realities that exist.  "The Messengers" actually premiered with a somewhat respectable 1.195 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49. The second week dropped to 771,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. Last week's new episode of "The Messengers" drew 651,000 viewers and did a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. It did a coveted 0.0 rating and a 0 share among female viewers 12-17.  That, apparently, has been...

The Messengers' Diogo Morgado Embraced His Inner Breaking Bad Fanboy While Filming in Albuquerque
Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad (2008)
Even sexy CW actors are obsessed with Breaking Bad! Diogo Morgado, star of The Messengers, The CW's spooky new sci-fi series, embraced his inner fanboy while filming his new show in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Southwestern city, now-fabled setting of the hit AMC series (and subsequent spinoff, Better Call Saul), still houses plenty of Walter White-frequented locations -- the White homestead, A1A car wash (aka Octopus car wash), Los Pollos Hermanos (aka burrito and burger joint Twisters). Morgado told Us Weekly that he definitely took the Breaking [...]...

Trey Callaway Talks The Messengers and How the Concept for the Show Evolved
The new CW series The Messengers explores what happens after a mysterious object plummets to Earth and explodes in a blinding flash, sending out a shock wave that instantly connects a group of strangers with extraordinary gifts, from inexplicable strength to the ability to heal others. As these Angels of the Apocalypse learn that they may be the only hope for preventing the impending Rapture, a mysterious figure known only as The Man (Diogo Morgado) brings death and suffering wherever he appears. During this exclusive interview with Collider, executive producer Trey Callaway talked about how the concept for this show evolved, keeping this a character-driven story within the mythology that they’ve established, the core values of the story, the motivations of The Man, the influence of God vs. the Devil, sparingly showing the wings of these new Angels of the Apocalypse, the challenges of having such a large cast,...

The Messengers Review: Angels Are Among Us on the CW
Angels, demons, "The Man" (who appears via meteor) … these feel like dark portends for any show. But with only the pilot available for review, it's hard to know where The Messengers may fall on the spectrum of CW series. Is it doomed like The Tomorrow People, or will it get steadily better (and build up an audience) like The 100? Though it very closely follows NBC's Heroes model, is it instead more the heir apparent to Supernatural? To start, The Messengers features a lot of the hallmarks of almost any given CW series -- the cast is young and attractive, and there is a superpower/fantasy hook -- but it also actually feels a little ambitious in its themes. [caption id="attachment_443769" align="alignright" width="350"] Image via The CW/caption] Still, this setup may sound achingly familiar: The Messengers follows the story of five individuals whose lives change dramatically after a meteor hits in the desert and...

The Messengers — The CW’s new drama is Rapture-ous.
A strange occurrence in the New Mexico desert stops the hearts of five strangers, then resurrects them again — as Earth-bound angels. Not the white-robed, harp-toting kind. The “oracles of the apocalypse” kind, in Everyman clothing. As these unwitting emissaries — a scientist, a single mom, a bullied student, an FBI agent and a televangelist — come to grips with extraordinary new powers and how they got them, their lives begin to intersect with one another’s and that of a mysterious figure known only as “The Man” (Diogo Morgado). Meet The CW’s The Messengers. “If Close Encounters and The Stand … Continue reading →

The Messengers Season 1 Review
This review is based off the first episode of season 1, which was provided to us prior to broadcast.

If Supernatural and Smallville had a brief affair, their love child would be the pilot episode of The Messengers. Between the plain-clothed Lucifer-esque character spinning his own agenda and the other worldly imagery, it certainly appears to be a marriage between some of the more interesting parts of both long-lived (living) shows.

“Awakening” serves primarily as a meet-and-greet type episode, not unlike the format viewers would expect to see from any series debut. With promos for the latest CW show giving potential fans a fairly accurate portrayal of what they can look forward to on this Friday’s premiere, it’s the details more than the high points that are what sets this show apart from the rest of the network’s existing lineup.

The Messengers spends the bulk of its first...

Juan Pablo Di Pace, A.D. The Bible Continues' Hot Jesus, Talks Nickname and Faith—Watch the Interview!
Juan Pablo Di Pace
What's better than a hot actor playing Jesus? Another, possibly hotter actor playing Jesus. Argentina-born actor and Dallas reboot alum Juan Pablo Di Pace (pronounced dee Pahtch-eh), 35, plays the role in executive producers Mark Burnett and wife Roma Downey's second biblical adventure miniseries, A.D. The Bible Continues, which premieres on NBC this Easter Sunday. Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado, now 34, had portrayed the part in their hit 2013 History channel miniseries The Bible and their 2014 film Son of God. In an interview with E! What Does Juan Pablo Di Pace Think of His New "Hot Jesus" Title? Watch and Find Out!
Have you met the new Jesus Christ? He's heavenly looking (no pun intended...Ok, maybe a little). Actor Juan Pablo Di Pace has taken on the holy role for NBC's miniseries A.D. The Bible Continues, the network's sequel to The Bible premiering on April 5, and has since been appropriately dubbed the new "Hot Jesus," (which was previously held by Diogo Morgado) but don't expect him to be all giddy about his superficial title. During an interview with E! News the (single!) Argentinean star admitted he was thankful for the praise but that's not what this role is about for him. "I don't feel the pressure. To me, it cheapens my experience of the role," he explains, "It...

NBC's upcoming series A.D. The Bible Continues picks up where The Bible miniseries left off and Et sat down with the series producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey to discuss their latest faith-based project.

"People are loving it," Mark said. "They're saying that A.D. is kind of The Bible meets House of Cards meets Game of Thrones."

Diogo Morgado in The Messengers (2015)
Before a busy Television Critics Association press tour day that featured the renewal of eight fall dramas for next season, The CW also announced its adjusted midseason schedule. The spring announcement includes time slots for "iZombie" and "The Messengers," a shift for "Supernatural" and a home for the new reality competition "Cedric's Barber Battle." From "Veronica Mars" veterans Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright, "iZombie" will premiere on Tuesday, March 17 at 9 p.m. after a new episode of "The Flash." The drama, which stars Rose McIver as a medical resident who becomes a zombie and uses her undead state to help fight crime, will be taking the place that "Supernatural" has filled strongly this season. Kelsey Grammer Says NatGeo's 'Killing Jesus' Is 'Pretty Graphic'
Kelsey Grammer at an event for X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
Kelsey Grammer plays King Herod in National Geographic Channel's Killing Jesus and Et has the scoop on the making of the telepic.

News: Diogo Morgado is Jesus in The Bible

"I know there are some scenes that are pretty graphic," Kelsey told Et. "I think the beheading of John the Baptist is pretty serious."

Killing Jesus is based on the bestselling book by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard, which centers on the history and conspiracy surrounding Jesus' life and death.

"He was very intense and confrontational at the end of his life," Bill told Et. "Jesus was a revolutionary. He really was angry, but it was a righteous anger."

Kelsey, who describes himself as a religious man, said his faith had nothing to do with his decision to play the part.

"I read the part and thought, 'Wow, I'm gone by page 8, I think. Ok, why not?'" Kelsey said.
