D23 returns us to The Grid thanks to the recently screened footage of Tron: Ares. Actors Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges, and Evan Peters joined the D23 stage to introduce the footage, which Deadline describes as follows:
"The light cycles of Tron are seen speeding through city streets, leaving laser thin waves behind them, and splicing cars on the street in half. Jared Leto plays the Tron-like character clad in red while Greta Lee plays a brilliant programmer whose great work has Ares coming into the world. Leto in the voice-over of the trailer says, I came here to find somethingsomething important. We see him zooming on a light cycle with Lees character. Bridges, who is the hacker and original video game character Kevin Flynn, appears as something of an apparition at the end in white robes."

Among its many achievements, the pioneering 1982 science-fiction film Tron enabled audiences to experience the awesome sensation of being sucked into a video game world of endless possibilities and wonder. By inventing technology that far surpassed anything available through 1980s arcades and consoles, Tron inspired audiences to dream of a future in which real-world game-playing was as fun and interesting as the thrilling game sequences in the film.
Tron, the first feature film to extensively use computer-generated imagery (CGI) alongside live-action elements, was so far ahead of its time that it was disqualified from winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects because the Academy felt that the film’s use of computer animation amounted to cheating. By creating its own unique digital world, Tron turned the limitations of 1980s animation and CGI to its advantage. Over 40 years after its release, the film remains a mind-blowing viewing experience, unlike any other movie ever made.

The science-fiction and action-adventure movie Tron 3, also known as Tron: Ares, is officially moving forward after years of uncertainty. The Tron IP has technically never been a success; the original movie in 1982, written and directed by Steven Lisberger and starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and Cindy Morgan, was considered a box office flop, although its aesthetic and special effects made it a cult classic and kept it alive in people’s imagination for the decades that followed. As for Joseph Kosinski's Tron: Legacy, featuring Bridges, Olivia Wilde, and Garrett Hedlund, it was generally not considered a hit either when it came out in 2010; though it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound Design, it did not generate enough revenues to lift the franchise off the ground.

From the mind of Steven Lisberger, the original Tron movie was praised for its groundbreaking visuals upon its release in 1982 and, over the years, became a cult classic sci-fi film. From director Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy was released almost 30 years later as one of the first examples of a legacy sequel. After a threequel spent years in development hell, Tron 3 with Jared Leto finally got off the ground earlier this year.
Now, at Walt Disney World's All The Disney Thrills event, Boxleitner and Morgan reacted to the news of Tron 3 in an interview with ComicBook.com. The original Tron stars seemed open to the idea of returning in the threequel, but also are unsure if they will be involved. Read what they said below:

"Caddyshack" started out as a straightforward coming-of-age comedy about a young guy working as a caddie on the links of a posh golf club; by the time it reached the screen, it had become a summit meeting between three comic heavyweights of the time. There was Chevy Chase, the former star of "Saturday Night Live;" Bill Murray, the then-current star of the show; and Rodney Dangerfield, the stand-up legend whose club in New York helped launch the career of many comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Carrey. There was also a gopher that looked remarkably like a hand puppet, but the coming-of-age stuff was largely relegated to filler by the antics of its three stars.
After the huge success of "National Lampoon's Animal House," Harold Ramis and Douglas Kennedy decided to take the riotous underdog formula to the links. They'd both had experience at golf clubs as teenagers and, together...

On July 9, 1982, Disney unveiled the sci-fi actioner Tron in theaters, where it would gross $33 million and, decades later, get a sequel in Tron: Legacy. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
It would be all too easy to describe the Disney Studios’ Tron as yet another special effects movie in a year that has seen special effects achieve unprecedented heights of sophistication and technical virtuosity. It is that, of course, and it probably relies more heavily on computer-generated animations than any other movie yet produced. Both the eye and the mind are continually boggled by a bombardment of images that quite literally defy description. Who could hope to describe the electronically produced transformations that take place at faster-than-lightning speeds in the complex circuitry of a computer? They must be seen to be believed and even then you’re not quite sure.
But young Steven Lisberger, who both wrote and directed Tron,...

Stream of the Day: 10 Years After ‘Tron: Legacy,’ the Original Film Explains Why a Sequel Was Doomed
With readers turning to their home viewing options more than ever, this daily feature provides one new movie each day worth checking out on a major streaming platform.
When Steven Lisberger first conceived of what would become his 1982 film “Tron,” the fledgling filmmaker had a startling vision of the future: an animated feature that could explore the world of early video games like “Pong” in the kind of detail not yet available for live-action moviemaking. With producing partner Donald Kushner — with whom he’d made the 90-minute Olympics-themed animated feature “Animalympics” — Lisberger set up an animation shop to bring “Tron” to fruition. However, they eventually decided to explore the story through a blend of live-action footage and computer animated sequences.

Let’s get it out of the way: 1982’s Tron is a perfect example of a film wherein style completely trumped substance to its lasting detriment. That’s not to take away from its importance as a groundbreaking piece of work, one undeniably laced with rich iconography, but instead to point out that on a narrative level, Tron left a lot to be desired, too caught up – and understandably so – in exploring its own world to focus on giving us a solid story with which to truly support itself. As a result, with several decades now under its belt and its once incredible effects and animation now painfully dated, it’s even easier to see that there’s no real meat on the film’s bones that has allowed it to truly stand the test of time for most people outside of its own loyal fanbase.

Tron 3 was in the planning stages well before Tron: Legacy hit theaters in 2010, but five years passed before the sequel moved forward. Everything started to come together quite quickly once it was announced, with director Joseph Kosinski set to return along with leads Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. In a recent interview with Collider, Olivia Wilde claims that the only delay on the movie was breaking the story. They needed to get it right before they prematurely told everyone it was happening. She then confirmed that the sequel will pick up shortly after the events seen in Tron: Legacy, with a story that revolves around her character Quorra existing in the real world alongside Sam Flynn. About the screenplay she says:
"I love this character of Quorra so much and I've built her with Joe Kosinski and we took her such a long way from what was written to what we made.

Tron 3, which is rumored to be titled Tron Ascension, will indeed bring back Olivia Wilde as Quorra. She joins previously announced Tron: Legacy co-star Garrett Hedlund. Joseph Kosinski is also confirmed to be returning to direct this follow-up to his 2010 Disney sequel.
Tron: Legacy was the long-awaited continuation of the 1982 flop-turned-cult favorite Tron, which took its hero inside a computer world known as the Grid. Both the original and the sequel starred Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner, though neither actor is yet confirmed for this next movie. Tron: Legacy revealed that Jeff Bridges's character, computer programmer Kevin Flynn, had a son named Sam, played by Garrett Hedlund.
Sam jumps into the Grid to search for his long lost father. While there, he meets Olivia Wilde's character Quorra, an algorithm made flesh who escapes the world of the Grid at the end of Tron: Legacy and enters our reality.

Earlier this month, we reported that Disney's Tron 3 is set to start shooting this fall, with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski confirmed to be back at the helm for this long-awaited follow-up. Today, Production Weekly is reporting that the sequel is now titled Tron: Ascension, with production scheduled to begin in Vancouver this October 2015 to February 2016. Disney has not confirmed the title or the production schedule at this time, but Production Weekly was the first to reveal the Terminator Genisys title for the first time back in December 2013, so it's certainly possible that Tron: Ascension is the actual title.
Garrett Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn in Tron: Legacy, is the only actor currently confirmed for Tron: Ascension at this time. With production said to begin later this year, hopefully we'll start hearing about whether or not Tron: Legacy cast members Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn), Olivia Wilde (Quorra) or Bruce Boxleitner...

Yesterday, it was widely reported that Tron 3 was moving forward, with shooting set to begin in Vancouver this fall. Now it is being confirmed that Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski will also helm this follow-up. At this time, Garrett Hedlund, who played Sam Flynn, son of Jeff Bridges's Kevin Flynn, is the only actor said to be returning.
While it is now confirmed that Tron 3 will start shooting sometime in October, Disney has not yet officially green lit the second sequel to the 1982 cult hit Tron. It is said that studio operators in Vancouver are competing to land the production. No booking has been confirmed. Vancouver will also host another sci-fi tentpole sequel this year, with Star Trek 3 shooting sometime this spring.
It is not yet known if Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn), Olivia Wilde (Quorra) or Bruce Boxleitner (Alan Bradley/Tron) will reprise their roles. Tron: Legacy...

Back in December 2012, two years after Tron: Legacy hit theaters, Garrett Hedlund confirmed that he will return to play Sam Flynn in Disney's Tron 3, but we haven't heard much about the sequel since then. Today, VanCity Buzz reports that production is scheduled to begin on October 5, with Garrett Hedlund currently the only confirmed star at this time. Sources from Badass Digest and /Film confirm the report, while adding that Joseph Kosinski is coming back to direct.
Joseph Kosinski revealed back in October 2013 that the script was still being written by Jesse Wigutow (The Crow reboot), who rewrote the original script by David Digilio (Eight Below). While the director insisted at the time that the project was still moving forward, this is the first we've heard about production getting under way this year. It remains to be seen if Jeff Bridges (Kevin Flynn), Olivia Wilde (Quorra) or Bruce Boxleitner (Alan Bradley...

Microsoft's debut games console, the Xbox, made a big impact on gaming, but not all of its games got the attention they deserved...

The new generation console war may turning towads a two horse race, with Nintendo playing catch up, but wind back a few years, and Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo were all hard at it, competing for your money and loyalty. The PlayStation 2 would go on to win the war of its generation, but Microsoft's Xbox was a tough competitor, giving the company a secure foothold, which it would later take advantage of in the next generation with the Xbox 360's dominance.
The original Xbox had a host of great games, many of which have gone on to become successful franchises, with no better example than Halo, but not all of its good games gained the attention they deserved, even if sequels managed to appear in later years.

To quote Homer Simpson, “did anybody see the movie Tron?” Okay, okay, I’m sure quite a lot of people have actually seen Tron, and probably liked it. Wait, no, I don’t mean the Tron with the Daft Punk soundtrack and Olivia Wilde lying on a sofa. I’m talking about the original Tron. The Tron from 1982, with the light cycles and the funny graphics, and Jeff Bridges playing, well, Jeff Bridges.
From a modern perspective, Tron just about holds up to our often critical gaze. Of course the computer animation appears very basic, the science fiction tale is riddled with clichés, and the overall feel of the film at times verges on comedic. But, despite all its flaws and narrative simplicity, Tron is fundamentally a strong film.
Even at face value, it is a film worthy of praise for its innovative daring and way-ahead-of-its-time-ness; courtesy of the brains of creator Steven Lisberger,...

Don't worry, Disney sci-fi lovers. Two of their most beloved genre franchises are still on track with the sequel Tron 3 and the long-awaited remake The Black Hole coming in the near future.
In April, it was announced that Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts was hired to pen a new version of The Black Hole. Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski, who will also helm this massive space epic for Disney, promises that Spaihts is hard at work on the remake. And that a screenplay for Tron 3, which he is also directing, is also in the midst of being hammered out.
"Both projects are being written right now by two really talented writers. Jon Spaihts is writing The Black Hole and Jesse Wigutow is writing Tron 3. Both scripts are in progress, I'm really excited about both. The fundamental ideas of both are really interesting. The Tron sequel kind...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Sometimes imitation can lead to sincere embarrassment. I’ll let you decide if sitting through this song & dance number clearly inspired by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video from the 1985 TV horror musical The Midnight Hour will make you want to get dead.
It must be said that The Midnight Hour boasted quite an eclectic cast of B and C list actors, some whose careers had long since peaked and others who would go on to become better known than they were at the time they appeared in this.
LeVar Burton
Peter Deluise
Dedee Pfeiffer
Dick Van Patten
Kevin McCarthy
Kurtwood Smith
Cindy Morgan
Mark Blankfield
Wolfman Jack
Macauley Culkin
The bell of this monster’s ball was Shari Belafonte. “Get Dead” was her big musical number, and it delivered everything you could expect from a cheesy TV movie stab at recreating the aesthetics...

Whether the gathering of geeky masses makes you want to take solace in your batcave or dust off the old Captain America cosplay outfit, there's no denying that the folks of Motor City Conventions have once again lined up a great show for fans. Now in its 22nd year, McCc is set to bow May 13 - 15 at the Suburban Collection Showplace and, from the looks of it, should be a bigger show than ever.

I’m not entirely sure the use of the word “Classic” on the cover is entirely justified here, since Tron‘s popularity must surely be classed more as a cult thing than something of the mainstream. Judged by “traditional” factors for critique, it doesn’t exactly shine; the tone extremely camp and a little too self-consciously wierd, the script is full of problems and the pace is all over the place, but it still conjours up a tangible nostalgia that is as much indicative of the magic of cinema as real quality is.
In conjunction with the Blu-ray release of Tron Legacy, the original “classic” is now also available to buy on blu-ray.
Although everyone should by now know the plot, there may be those of you out there who haven’t yet seen the original Tron, having only just discovered the sequel, so here goes anyway. Ex-encom employee Kevin Flynn...

Hereafter (Warner Bros.) Clint Eastwood’s spiritual thriller follows a trio of characters whose seemingly disparate paths converge: Matt Damon as a blue collar Joe who tries to fight against his psychic powers that see “the other side,” Cecile de France as a journalist who somehow survives the tsunami that crushed Indonesia, and a London schoolboy (Frankie and George McLaren) who seeks answers after losing his twin brother. Like all of Eastwood’s films, the narrative construction is tight as a drum, with solid work by all involved. That said, “solid” would have to be the operative word to describe the proceedings here, as well as “unremarkable” and “uninvolving” on an emotional level. Perhaps we expect too much when we see Clint’s name on a film these days, but that’s the flip side of being one of the best. Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

Tron director Steven Lisberger discusses his experiences on Tron: Legacy
Steven Lisberger changed visual effects forever with his landmark sci-fi adventure Tron in 1982. 28 years later, he returned to produce the highly-anticipated sequel Tron: Legacy, which arrives on DVD, two-disc Blu-ray/DVD, four-disc Blu-ray/DVD/3D Blu-ray, and Tron: Legacy/Tron: The Original Classic five-disc Blu-ray on April 5. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment recently provided us with an interview with Steven Lisberger about his experience making Tron: Legacy. Here's what he had to say.
How long did it take to get the green light for Tron: Legacy?
Steven Lisberger: We started discussions at Disney about 11 years ago, but there have been rumors of a sequel for much longer than that. Over the years, I've seen numerous Disney executives go from black hair to grey - and the sequel itself has changed and gone through many different phases. When the...

Last fall’s “Tron Legacy” was one of the most anticipated movies of all time. From the teaser film released at Comic-Con International in San Diego years before to the elaborate events staged across the country, “Tron Legacy” was one of the most unique films in recent memory — and that’s before you factor in the special effects. But for “Tron” fans, this was something they’ve been waiting for since 1982. And they weren’t alone.
For actor Bruce Boxleitner, the resurgence of the “Tron” franchise 15+ years after the original was a chance to continue the story and give back to the fans who have approached him throughout the years expressing their love for the original film and the desire for more.
Although he starred in two major television hits in “Scarecrow & Mrs. King” and “Babylon 5,” Boxleitner will always be best remembered by the world at...
