Netflix's My Oxford Year Had To Shoot That Karaoke Scene Multiple Times For A Good Reason
Image
This post contains major spoilers for "My Oxford Year."

Netflix might be responsible for one of the best limited series of the year in "Adolescence," but that doesn't mean the streamer has forgotten how to churn out the easily binge-able melodramas that helped it win the streaming wars. "My Oxford Year" is the latest Netflix romance film and it's, well, nonsense really. But it's sort of fun nonsense in that it makes no attempt whatsoever to apologize for its young adult modern-day fairy tale naiveté.

The film stars Sofia Carson, who played Nora Parisi in Netflix's "Carry-On" and has been making a name for herself as an aspiring queen of Netflix romantic dramas, beginning with 2022's "Purple Hearts" and continuing on to the romantic comedy "The Life List" (which dominated Netflix's top charts in 2025). Now, she's returned for more romance with "My Oxford Year," a BookTok fantasy come to life...

My Oxford Year Author Julie Whelan Aims To Revolutionize Audiobook Industry
Image
My Oxford Year author Julia Whelan reveals how she wants to change the audiobook industry. The romance novel was Whelan's debut work, focusing on the story of a young woman named Anna who sets out to attend England's Oxford University. There, she meets a man who will change both of their lives.

This year, My Oxford Year was released as a movie of the same name, directed by Iain Morris and debuting on Netflix on Aug. 1. My Oxford Yearstars Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest in the lead roles, with a supporting cast that includes Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Poppy Gilbert.

Meanwhile, via The Rolling Stone, Whelan explained how she wishes to change the audiobook industry through the romance genre. This stemmed from her own work providing the voice of Amy in the audiobook for Gone Girl, for which she was only paid $2,500. The author noted that audiobooks are "a multibillion-dollar industry.

My Oxford Year: Cast, Ending Explained, Quotes, Photos, Plot
Image
Prepare to laugh and cry with Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest in My Oxford Year, a new romance written by Allison Burnett (Autumn in New York) and Melissa Osborne, and directed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, now streaming on Netflix. The film is based on a novel by Julia Whelan, which was adapted from Burnett’s original screenplay. Head to campus with the brand-new trailer above.

“Iain Morris created one of the most iconic pieces of British television, The Inbetweeners,” says Carson, who also executive produces the movie — her second production credit following 2022’s Purple Hearts. “Comedy is his language. It was so important for Marty to bring in Iain as our director, because he was so certain of the importance of comedy to the DNA of this film. You simply cannot have a British romance without iconic British humor. Iain’s vision of this film brought to life a sweeping,...

My Oxford Year: Netflix's New Romantic Drama Becomes Streaming Hit Despite Low Rt Score
Image
For the past six weeks, the animated KPop Demon Hunters has been dominating Netflix's Global Top 10 chart, finishing in first or second place every week since its release on June 20. It's even earned the distinction of becoming Netflix's fourth most-watched movie of all time with 158.8 million views, ranking behind Don't Look Up, Carry-On, and Red Notice.

However, for the past two weeks since its release on July 25, it's been Happy Gilmore 2 that has topped Netflix's Global Top 10 chart with 46.7 million views and 40.8 million views, respectively. In fact, Happy Gilmore 2 received 46.7 million views within its first three days, marking the biggest debut ever for any Adam Sandler movie on Netflix.

Happy Gilmore 2 also recorded the largest opening weekend ever for a Netflix film in the United States. While these two titles have been dominating the streamer's charts for the past few weeks, Netflixhasa new movie on its Global Top 10 chart this week.

How ‘My Oxford Year’ Brings a Fresh Spin to Love and Loss
Image
When director Iain Morris was approached about directing Netflix’s My Oxford Year, he thought they got the wrong person.

For Morris, a British comedy legend best known for creating The Inbetweeners, taking on a romance film wasn’t something he necessarily thought was in his future, but perhaps that was the point.

“This script came through, and I thought, ‘They got the wrong person,’ because it was quite sincere. It was quite romantic. I was like, ‘Oh, I wonder if they know what I do?,’” Morris tells The Hollywood Reporter. But when speaking with producer Marty Bowen, Morris recalls the “first thing” he told him being, “I love The Inbetweeners. I’d love [for] you to try and bring some of that energy to this and see how it goes.”

“And I’m a terribly shallow and a sucker for flattery,” Morris quips. “And I thought, ‘Okay, I wonder if I can?...

‘My Oxford Year’ Star Corey Mylchreest Breaks Down That Karaoke Scene and Talks Jaime’s Big Choice
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Netflix’s My Oxford Year.]

When portraying King George in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Corey Mylchreest left audiences in love and heartbroken after his character’s emotional arc. Now the actor is set to once again make the audience swoon and possibly cry in Netflix’s My Oxford Year.

In the film, directed by Iain Morris and based on Julia Whelan’s 2018 novel of the same name, Mylchreest stars as Jamie, an Oxford professor who falls in love with American student Anna (played by Sofia Carson). What begins as a fun fling evolves as the two grow a strong bond built on poetry and literature, before profoundly altering each other’s lives and subverting each other’s expectations. However, Jamie reveals that he has been secretly battling cancer, the same illness to which he lost his brother, and has made the decision to no longer continue treatment much to his father’s protests.

Sofia Carson Is Ready to Offer a “Classic Timeless Love Story” With ’My Oxford Year’
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Netflix’s My Oxford Year.]

Audiences may have seen Sofia Carson fall in love onscreen in roles such as Netflix’s Purple Hearts and the Life List, but her new film is offering a revival of the traditional classic love story.

“There’s a certain level of escapism that comes with falling in love with a love story that is so beautiful to be able to offer that, and this one in particular just felt timeless,” Carson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It felt like it had been a while since I had seen a classic and timeless love story brought to life for this generation.”

That love story is My Oxford Year, directed by Iain Morris and starring Carson (who also exec produce) and Queen Charlotte star Corey Mylchreest. The film, based on the 2018 book by Julia Wheelan, centers on Carson’s Anna, an ambitious young American woman who sets...

Netflix’s New Releases Coming in August 2025
Image
An Oxford-set college rom-com from the guy behind The Inbetweeners; the return of one of Netflix’s biggest ever shows; Genndy Tartakovsky’s latest adult animated project; Vanessa Kirby’s return to more intimate dramas about the human condition; a documentary that promised to shed new light on the Jussie Smollett hate crime incident; and a murder mystery film featuring several British and Irish acting icons are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in August.

Kicking off August is the rom-com My Oxford Year, which focuses on the tried and trusted formula of a young American girl heading to stuffy old Europe and finding love with some impossibly handsome and terribly charming guy, so it’s almost guaranteed to find a huge audience. In this instance, Sofia Carson plays Anna, an ambitious American student at Oxford University whose life is changed when she meets...

On-Air Film Review: Another Yank is There in ‘My Oxford Year’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on July 31st, 2025, reviewing the new film “My Oxford Year,” similar in theme to the previous “A Yank in Oxford.” Streaming on Netflix beginning August 1st.

Sofia Carson is Anna De La Vega, an ambitious post graduate who decides to take a gap year to study Victorian poetry – before her financial job starts at Goldman Sachs –at the prestigious Oxford University in England. After a meet cute in which Anna gets car-splashed by an errant Jaguar, the driver happens to be her eventual poetry instructor Jamie (Corey Mylchreest). Over first editions and languid words the two begin a love affair, the torrent of which is interrupted by news of Jamie’s rare cancer … it seems that all the happiness might be upended by reality. As Lord Alfred Tennyson wrote, ’Tis better to have loved and lost,...

My Oxford Year (2025) ‘Netflix’ Movie Review & Ending Explained: What Happens to Jamie?
Image
Netflix’s penchant for taking two pretty and committed faces and throwing them into a cesspool of romantic mediocrity continues with its latest offering, “My Oxford Year” (2025). Starring Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest, the Iain Morris-directed film aims for poignancy but can only become a series of tried and tired romantic tropes.

The film pits a dainty dreamer-girl against a swoonworthy British boy who serves cake, figuratively and literally. Understandably, the two get involved in a fling, which turns out to be something more. Let us see how Anna and Jamie shape each other’s lives.

My Oxford Year (2025) Netflix Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

Anna (Sofia Carson) is someone who has planned her entire life, starting with chalking out her career as a financial analyst at Goldman Sachs. However, underneath that pragmatism, there is a wishful little girl’s dream hidden somewhere. It is that little girl’s voice...

My Oxford Year review – so-so Netflix romance trades on anglophilia
James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Simon Bird, and Joe Thomas in The Inbetweeners (2008)
An American lives out her British dream in an uninspired yet competently assembled trifle from The Inbetweeners creator Iain Morris

Call it the Bridgerton effect, which itself was arguably the result of The Crown effect, but the Netflix algorithm is currently aimed toward the UK with moonier eyes than usual. Last month saw Lena Dunham recount her days as an American getting to grips with the realities of London in Too Much, and as production begins on yet another adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, here comes the sudsy romance My Oxford Year where the object of affection is England itself.

One might assume that a university-set film directed by The Inbetweeners creator Iain Morris would be a ribald comedy geared toward a younger male crowd, but My Oxford Year, based on a novel by Julia Whelan, picks sentiment over sauce. It’s a frothy, throwaway fantasy about another American hoping...

Netflix’s My Oxford Year: A Study in Ambition and Elegy
Image
With its premiere on the Netflix streaming service, My Oxford Year arrives as a romantic drama navigating the well-trodden terrain of love and loss against the storied backdrop of British academia. Produced by Temple Hill Entertainment, a company with a notable portfolio in emotionally resonant narratives, the film charts the collision of two lives: Anna De La Vega (Sofia Carson), an American student of immense ambition, and Jamie Davenport (Corey Mylchreest), her charismatic but troubled literature tutor. The film’s genesis is unusually circular: it is an adaptation of Julia Whelan’s novel of the same name, which was itself adapted from an original screenplay by Allison Burnett. Burnett returns as a co-writer for this cinematic version, completing a rare journey from screen to page and back again. The project is helmed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris, a director whose background in comedy suggests a deliberate, and perhaps unexpected, tonal strategy for the material.

‘My Oxford Year’ Review: Sofia Carson Learns Lessons of the Heart in Netflix’s Disheartening Weepie
Image
Seconds after the opening credits of “My Oxford Year” have discreetly scrolled across the screen, our happy heroine strolls the streets surrounding the titular British institution and is haphazardly doused by a massive puddle thanks to a vintage vehicle driven by her soon-to-be paramour. This klutzy comedic moment endemic to the rom-com genre unfortunately doubles as a fitting metaphor for the viewing audience, as the ensuing shenanigans make us feel pelted by that same gutter water time and time again. What should be a tender, feminist-minded story centered on a young woman rediscovering her dormant childhood dreamer turns into a middling melodrama about being with a cute guy in desperate need of her rescue.

Anna de la Vega (Sofia Carson) has been fantasizing about attending Oxford University since she was 10 years old, cracking open a dusty old book of poetry for the first time. Even before her face appears on...

7 Best Movies and Shows to Watch on Netflix This Weekend: August 1, 2025
Image
It’s been a long, hot summer — really, really hot. We find ourselves entering August, maybe standing not quite so tall as we did back in June, maybe slipping and sliding a little, in our own personal pools of sweat, onto the next page of the calendar. But you know what? We may be exhausted, but we’re not defeated. No, the blazing sun and rising temps may be doing their worst, but we’re stronger than we ever knew. And the best way to honor that truth (and also to hide inside with the AC blasting) is to take in a heat-wave stream.

So call up a summer classic that will speak straight to your hazy brain, a steamy supernatural origin story, or a sizzling reality competition that really turns up the heat. There’s no better way to keep things cool this August weekend.

Love across the pond.

Will There Be Time Bandits Season 2? All You Need to Know
Image
Taika Waititi really seems to be on a streak of losing shows and films. The filmmaker adapted the acclaimed Terry Gilliam film Time Bandits as a show for Apple TV+ but the series was canceled after its very first season. The adventure comedy series featured Lisa Kudrow, Kal-El Tuck, Charlyne Yi, and Waititi himself.

The series was co-created with Jemaine Clement and Iain Morris. While the show achieved critical acclaim, it did not seem to get the required viewership for a historic fiction sci-fi adventure series as big as that and hence was reportedly canceled. However, interest still remains within a small circle of fans.

Romy and Michele's High School Reunion 2 Might Finally Happen 27 Years Later, Star Reveals
Image
It’s been nearly 30 years since Romy and Michele attended their 10-year high school reunion in 1997, but talks of a sequel film to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion are heating up once again. One of its stars, Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino, who played Romy White in the original movie, told People that a sequel is “close” to becoming a reality.

Sorvino, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996 for her role in Mighty Aphrodite, said that a follow-up to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is “so close to being greenlit,” and added that a director has already been hired for the project.

They’ve done his deal, they’ve done Lisa (Kudrow) and my deals as executive producers.

Taika Waititis Reboot Of Cult Classic 80s Sci-Fi Adventure Gets Uncertain Update From EP After 3 Years of Silence
Image
Director and producer George Nolfi offers a surprising update for Taika Waititi's Flash Gordon reboot after three years of silence. First created by Alex Raymond in 1934 for comics, Mike Hodges brought the character to the big screen in 1980 with Flash Gordon, starring Sam Jones, Melody Anderson, Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, and Max Von Sydow. Waititi was brought on board to write and direct an animated reboot for 20th Century and Disney, though it was later reconceived as a live-action project in 2021.

As Nolfi discussed his new action-thriller Elevation with Collider, the director opened up about his involvement with Waititi's Flash Gordon reboot. Nolfi was originally on board as a producer, but he indicated he's drifted away from it in recent years. He said:

I'm not too involved with that one. There are a couple of things coming up that I can't talk about that I'm humbled to be involved...

Apple TV+ Cancels Time Bandits After Just One Season
Image
In surprising news, Apple TV+ has decided to pull the plug on Time Bandits. The series premiered on the streaming platform on July 24 and ended its 10-episode run less than a month ago, on August 21. The series, which is an adaptation of Terry Gilliams 1981 movie of the same name, has been canceled after just one season, per Deadline.

It's not possible to gauge the shows success (or lack thereof) because the viewership numbers have not been made public yet. But the rationale behind the cancellation seems to be the shows lackluster performance, as it did not make it to Nielsens Top 10 rankings. In an era where big-budget shows, especially in the fantasy genre, are under intense scrutiny, they must meet certain viewership criteria to justify continuation on their respective streaming services. Unfortunately, Time Bandits fell short of expectations, leading Apple TV+ to reconsider the shows future.

Apple TV+ cancels Time Bandits after one season
Image
The other month, Apple TV+ aired the season finale to Time Bandits, its TV update of Terry Gilliam's 1981 time-hopping adventure movie. Now, not 30 days later, the streamer has opted to call it quits. Time Bandits is canceled, according to The A.V. Club.

We enjoyed the loose, family-friendly tone of Time Bandits, which starred Lisa Kudrow as the head of a time-traveling band of merry robbers and Kal-El Tuck as the young history nerd who joined them on their adventures. But you'd be forgiven if you didn't even know this series existed. Despite having some big names behind it — the show was created by Iain Morris, Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the latter two of whom also created What We Do In The Shadows — there wasn't much buzz about it. Considering that it cost a pretty penny to make — building sets for every new era the Time Bandits visit doesn't...

Terry Gilliam at an event for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
Time Bandits | Apple cancels Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s TV series after one season
Terry Gilliam at an event for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
The Taiki Waititi remake of Terry Gilliam’s beloved Time Bandits won’t be returning, with poor viewing figures being the likely culprit.

When Apple TV+ first announced that it was making a fantasy series –Time Bandits – based on the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name, it sounded like a clever idea, not least because of the talent involved. It was created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi (who would also appear in the series) as well as Iain Morris, best known as the co-creator of The Inbetweeners.

Apple didn’t skimp on the budget either (does it ever?) with all of those dollars definitely showing up on the screen. High production values meant impressive lighting and special effects and we’ll bet Mr Waititi didn’t come cheap either. According to The Hollywood Reporter though, none of that was enough to tempt audiences in the numbers that Apple was hoping for,...

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled After Single Season at Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ won’t reset the clock on Time Bandits.

The tech giant’s streaming service has canceled the series, an adaptation of a 1981 feature film by Terry Gilliam, after a single season. The news comes less than four weeks after Time Bandits completed its 10-episode first season on Aug. 21.

As is the case with most streaming series, viewing figures for Time Bandits aren’t publicly available. The show didn’t break into Nielsen’s top 10 original streaming series in the first four weeks of its run (Apple TV+ released two episodes per week). Critics were largely positive on the show; The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg wrote that particularly in the second half of the season, Time Bandits is “actively funny and clever and just a little bit emotional.”

Like the film, the series follows a young history buff (Kal-El Tuck) who’s recruited to join a band of...

Time Bandits' Future on Apple TV+ Revealed Weeks After Season 1 Finale
Image
The future of Time Bandits on Apple TV+ has been revealed. Unfortunately for fans of the series, it's not good news at all.

Per Deadline, it's been reported that Time Bandits has been canceled after one season. The news comes less than a month after the show ended its freshman season on Apple TV+, concluding on Aug. 21 after initially debuting on July 24. Consisting of 10 episodes in total, the first and only season released two episodes together on a weekly basis. While the show garnered a respectable 78% score on Rotten Tomatoes, its viewership was not particularly high, as Time Bandits failed to crack the Nielsen Top 10 rankings for streaming titles.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled After One Season at Apple TV+
Image
“Time Bandits” has been canceled by Apple TV+ after one season, Variety has confirmed.

The fantasy series, starring Lisa Kudrow, follows a group of thieves and their newest recruit — an 11-year-old boy named Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) — hopping across time and space to plunder riches. Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi created the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1981 cult classic, with Clement and Morris serving as co-showrunners.

Along with Kudrow and Tuck, the cast includes Tadhg Murphy, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva, Charlyne Yi, Rune Temte, Rachel House, Kiera Thompson, James Dryden, Felicity Ward, Francesca Mills and Imaan Hadchiti.

Clement, Morris and Waititi wrote and directed select episodes of “Time Bandits” Season 1; they also executive produced alongside Garrett Basch, Jane Stanton for Handmade Films and Tim Coddington. The now-defunct Paramount TV Studios produced with Anonymous Content’s AC Studios and MRC Television.

In July, Morris spoke to Variety about introducing “Time Bandits” to a new audience.

‘Time Bandits’ Canceled By Apple TV+ After 1 Season
Image
Time Bandits‘ latest adventure has come to an end. Apple TV+ has opted not to renew the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s cult classic film for a second season. The news comes almost a month after the 10-episode first season of the fantasy series starring Lisa Kudrow ended its run, released in batches of two episodes weekly.

The development is not entirely surprising. Despite the nostalgia factor and mostly favorable reviews (78% on Rotten Tomatoes), Time Bandits, created by Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris and Taika Waititi, did not attract large enough audience and was not able to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings.

After the initial round of the streaming wars where gaining market share was the sole objective, streamers have been applying a more disciplined approach in their shift to profitability,...
