Black Flag have announced a new lineup surrounding founding guitarist Greg Ginn.
The new lineup was unveiled in a post on the group’s Instagram page, with Ginn now joined by vocalist Max Zanelly, bassist David Rodriguez, and drummer Bryce Weston. The announcement also teased the band’s first new music in 12 years, along with upcoming live performances.
“We’re turning the page,” the post reads. “Black Flag is entering a new era — and we’re hyped to welcome three incredible new members… the new lineup is already in the studio and the rehearsal space — writing, jamming, and bringing fresh energy.”
Ginn resurrected Black Flag in 2013 with the release of the comeback album What the…, a widely-panned effort that Ginn has since acknowledged as subpar. The Black Flag name has been marred with negativity ever since.

One of the more controversial moments of the final day (April 13th) of the Coachella festival’s first weekend came during a set by L.A. punk legends Circle Jerks.
Following a rendition of the rebellious political song “Coup d’état,” frontman Keith Morris made a point to clarify some of the song’s lyrics — namely the last line, “kill all” — in the context of the modern day.
Addressing the crowd, Morris said [as transcribed by Sf Gate]: “That song, that last line, ends with ‘kill all.’ That’s a pretty fucking ugly statement. In ugly times. Do not think that we encourage that.”
However, he added, “What we do encourage — what would be totally fucking happening — would be an army of Luigis,” referring to Luigi Mangione, who faces federal and New York state charges for the alleged murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in late 2023.

There are many pitfalls that can await a band on their musical journey, but losing a lead singer is usually curtains for a band's career. Standing front and center to take all applause and criticism, it is a difficult balance to keep both a band and one's self on the straight and narrow. Be it through tragedy, incident, or the classic trope of 'musical differences', losing a vocalist is such a difficult thing to survive for any musical ensemble.
Despite losing the sound and aesthetic that so often characterizes an artist's output, not all bands are resigned to the scrapheap when their vocalists depart. There are a select few bands who went on to find success with a new frontman, delivering classic records and sold out shows all over the world.

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: After going on a hike and getting “really stoned,” Off! guitarist Dimitri Coats approached his friend and bandmate Keith Morris with a tall order: He wanted to make a film that featured the band… with the singer’s erectile dysfunction as the inciting incident. “I was a little worried (Keith) wouldn’t go for it,” Coats told IndieWire.
Morris, the legendary dreadlocked former lead man for The Circle Jerks, detailed his struggle with diabetes in in his 2016 autobiography “My Damage.” And, as he previously disclosed to Coats, erectile dysfunction (now resolved) was an early warning sign. In the film Coats envisioned, Morris never followed his musical dreams and became a defeated elderly porno store clerk who is inspired by a bout of erectile dysfunction to visit a “boner doctor”.
This leads to a hallucinogenic “antidote” created by aliens with the help of albino bees,...

When the Ramones first performed “Blitzkrieg Bop” at Cbgb some 44 years ago, no one could have imagined the song would be heard in virtually every stadium and in multiple TV spots for mainstream products like Coppertone, GoPro, Peloton, At&T and Taco Bell.
And punk rock, the genre of music that the Ramones and so many others ushered in, seemed destined for an equally short shelf life. Yet despite its built-to-self-destruct ethos, punk rock has not only endured, it continues to attract fans both old and young — anyone who’s read this far has probably already heard about the dust-up between Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (aka Rotten) and former Ramones drummer Marc Bell at an onstage Q&A last week to promote the film, which is at turns hilarious, pathetic and ridiculous, and often all three at once.
Two current documentaries illustrate the genre’s remarkable durability and continued relevance:...

Punk’s not dead, but it is about to get murdered. At least that’s the premise of New Wave anti-biopic “The Icarus Line Must Die,” directed by Michael Grodner in his feature debut.
The story follows Joe Cardamone, infamous frontman of post-hardcore band The Icarus Line, in a black-and-white Jim Jarmusch-esque light thriller, as he navigates Los Angeles, haunted by an anonymous texter threatening to kill him. Based on Cardamone’s real life as a musician and producer, the film illuminates the lives of the artists who’ve been slogging in the clubs, trying to do the impossible — get signed to a major label — even as they lament that they need the majors in the first place. It’s an age-old story about the corruptibility of art under capitalism.
What sets Grodner’s story apart is its intense focus on specific people in the scene who are emblematic...

Exclusive: The Icarus Line, the infamous La-based punk rock band fronted by Joe Cardamone, are heading to the silver screen after Dark Star Pictures picked up semi-biopic The Icarus Line Must Die.
The film, a dark dramatic narrative set against the backdrop of the current La underground music scene, will be released theatrically in June 2018 with a July home entertainment release in the U.S.
It tells the story of Cardamone as he navigates his way through the ups and downs of the modern music landscape with a new album and a major label deal in sight, while trying to keep his band, his relationship and his life from falling apart.
The Icarus Line were notorious during the early 2000s, touring and tearing up the world with their brand of Birthday Party-style chaos. Picking fights with bands like the Strokes – Cardamone, a member of the Buddyhead collective once spray-painted ‘Sellouts...

Joe Cardamone knows a thing or two about being in a lauded band with trouble and tragedy to spare. The former frontman of The Icarus Line, once billed by The Guardian as no less than “the greatest rock group of the 21st century,” struck out on his own back in 2015, so it’s only fitting that Michael Grodner’s narrative feature — appropriately titled “The Icarus Line Must Die” — will have its world premiere later this month after first starting filming that same year.
Di”The Icarus Line Must Die” is a narrative feature inspired by the No Wave films of the late ’70s and early ’80s and explores the La underground music scene. The film tracks Cardamone as a veiled version of himself — also a guy named Joe, also the frontman of a band called The Icarus Line — as he navigates his way through the ups and downs of the modern music landscape.

Chicago – One of the many things I love about The Criterion Collection is the even battlefield that it creates within its own archives. A film by Alfred Hitchcock or Akira Kurosawa or Charles Chaplin can sit next to a cult hit like “Repo Man.” I grew up in the era of “Repo Man“‘s growing cult status and it’s amazing to me to see this midnight movie given the same level of respect as films widely recognized as classics. “Repo Man” is a classic in its own way and the people at Criterion recognize that. Fans of the movie, and there are Many, will be more than satisfied.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Repo Man” is such a defiantly weird, punk rock movie that its unique nature has made it timeless. The film would be a cult hit if it came out today, nearly three decades after its release. Do you know how few ’80s films,...

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: April 16, 2013
Price: DVD $29.95, Blu-ray $39.95
Studio: Criterino
Emilio Estevez is the nihilistic Otto in Alex Cox's Repo Man.
Alex Cox’s (Searchers 2.0) singular science fiction comedy Repo Man remains the quintessential cult comedy film of the 1980s.
The 1984 movie stars the always captivating Harry Dean Stanton (Seven Psychopaths) as a weathered repo man in desolate downtown Los Angeles, and Emilio Estevez (The Breakfast Club) as the nihilistic middle-class punk he takes under his wing. The job becomes more than either of them bargained for when they get involved in reclaiming a mysterious—and otherworldly—Chevy Malibu with a hefty reward attached to it.
Featuring an ultimate early-eighties L.A. punk soundtrack featuring music from Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, The Circle Jerks, Fear and other, the grungily hilarious R-rated Repo Man still rules (while being a politically trenchant take on President Reagan’s domestic and foreign policy)!
