Noah Centineo is attached to play a young John Rambo, the role made famous by Sylvester Stallone, in a new “Rambo” prequel from Millennium Media titled “John Rambo.”
The first “Rambo” film was based on David Morrell’s 1972 novel “First Blood,” about a troubled Vietnam War veteran and former U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier who is expert in weaponry, hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla warfare. The five-film franchise, consisting of “First Blood” (1982), “Rambo: First Blood Part II” (1985), “Rambo III” (1988), “Rambo” (2008) and “Rambo: Last Blood” (2019), has grossed over $800 million worldwide.
Centineo rose to fame for his role on “The Fosters” before breaking out with a scene-stealing turn as heartthrob Peter Kavinsky in Netflix’s “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” films. Centineo also starred in and executive produced the spy adventure series “The Recruit” for the streamer. In 2022, the actor appeared opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in “Black Adam” as Atom Smasher.

The upcoming Rambo origin film, titled John Rambo, has found its leading man. David Morrell’s 1972 novel First Blood first introduced the Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war who finds himself in a one-man battle against his enemies, but it was Sylvester Stallone’s film series that catapulted the character into pop culture.
Since the First Blood film was released 1982, Sylvester Stallone has starred in all five movies about the character, most recently in 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood. But with Stallone at 79 years of age and the desire for more stories about the character enduring, the future of the franchise is, for now, in Rambo’s past.
Deadline has reported that, according to its sources, The Recruit and To All The Boys series star Noah Centineo has been tapped to play Rambo in John Rambo. Also said to be on board the film are Sisu director Jalmari Helander and...

Lionsgate is asking, "What would you do to go viral?" with its upcoming new horror flick, Do Not Enter. Hailing from prolific music video director Marc Klasfeld, the film centers on four social-media adventure seekers known as the Creepers, whose answer to that question is that they would break into and explore New Jersey's abandoned Paragon Hotel for a livestream. With a past tied directly to the mafia, rumors of a missing stash of $300 million, and claims of paranormal activity at the location, it seems like prime material for the group's biggest online stunt yet. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for upcoming movies, we can share the official trailer, which shows that there's a heavy and terrifying price to pay for fame. Deadly rivals make their presence known, though the night takes an especially harrowing turn when supernatural creatures begin hunting them down.

With Tulsa King still fresh in viewers’ minds after its explosive second season finale, Paramount is giving Sylvester Stallone fans even more reason to celebrate. While The General bides his time until Season 3, one of Stallone’s earliest and most defining action roles is heading to free streaming. Beginning July 1, First Blood — the 1982 action-thriller that introduced audiences to John Rambo — will be available to stream on Pluto TV, letting a whole new audience experience the film that helped cement Stallone as a household name.
While Stallone was already known for Rocky, First Blood proved he wasn’t just the scrappy underdog — he was also a full-fledged action icon. With a quieter, more psychologically tormented performance than his usual macho hero routine, Stallone turned Rambo into something more than just a one-man army. He made him human.

Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander (Sisu) has reportedly been tapped to make a Rambo prequel. Sylvester Stallone isn’t thought to be involved.
Millennium Media, the production company behind several modern action franchises such as The Expendables, The Hitman’s Bodyguard and Olympus Has Fallen, is reportedly looking to acquire backing for a Rambo prequel film. If it happens, it will chart the origins of the former Vietnam soldier made famous in the 1980s by Sylvester Stallone.
According to Deadline, Stallone won’t be involved, but things appear to be moving quickly, as an October shoot has already been set for Thailand. The country could well be doubling for Vietnam, with the tale likely to explore (in part at least), the traumatising effects of that war on Rambo’s psyche, adding context to the character’s first screen appearance in 1982’s acclaimed First Blood.
While you’d be forgiven for thinking this all feels a little cynical,...

After the origins of Batman, James Bond, and Han Solo were shown on the big screen, it looks like Rambo is next. Alongside Rocky Balboa, John Rambo is one of the defining roles of Sylvester Stallone's career and helped cement him as a cinematic icon. Stallone has since split from the Rocky franchise due to a falling out with producer Irwin Winkler, who owns the property. Now it looks like Stallone's other big title franchise is about to move on without him as a prequel to John Rambo is being developed six years after Stallone said goodbye to the character in Rambo: The Last Blood.
Deadline reports that Millennium Media is developing a Rambo prequel titled John Rambo and shopping the movie for buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. John Rambo is set to be directed bySisu filmmaker Jalmari Helander, with a screenplay by Black Adam writing duo Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani.

Ted Kotcheff, the notable Canadian director who directed classics such asFirst Bloodand Weekend at Bernie's, has died at age 94 on April 10. Kotcheff's family confirmed his passing to The Globe and Mail newspaper. Described as a talented, multi-faceted journeyman by the Toronto International Film Festival, Kotcheff used his eye for hits to direct and produce works on television and theater in both Canada and Hollywood. He created a bridge in the gap between productions in both, using his projects as a way to show there's more power in collaboration.
First Blood (1982) gave Sylvester Stallone his first post-Rocky hit, which turned into sequels. Kotcheff didn't bother with the sequels because he thought they seemed to be celebrating the Vietnam War. "They offered me the first sequel, and after I read the script, I said, 'In the first film he doesn't kill anybody. In this film, he kills 75 people. It seemed to be celebrating the Vietnam War,...

Ted Kotcheff, the unheralded Canadian moviemaker who moved gracefully among genres to direct such notable films as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, First Blood and Weekend at Bernie’s, has died. He was 94.
Kotcheff, who went on to spend 13 seasons as an executive producer on the gritty Dick Wolf series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, died Thursday, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), starring Richard Dreyfuss as a young hustler, is widely considered to be among the finest Canadian films ever made, and Kotcheff also directed a feature very high of the list of the best movies to come out of Australia — the harrowing thriller Wake in Fright (1971).

“They want crap,” Carolco executive Peter Hoffman once told the Los Angeles Times, “Every time people tell you they don’t, it’s bull. They want crap.” Hoffman was reflecting on the lackluster audience response to the Oscar-nominated Music Box (1989), while sci-fi action blockbusters such as Total Recall (1990) were filling coffers like mad.
Long before independent production houses like Skydance, A24, and Blumhouse were making waves alongside the major studios, Carolco made its name in Hollywood as a backer of lavish action films that included the Rambo series, Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and Cliffhanger (1993). Carolco’s rise and fall was as epic as one of their blockbuster action films.

John Rambo, as portrayed by actor Sylvester Stallone, is a controversial character. When he first appeared in 1982's "First Blood," an adaptation of David Morrell's 1972 novel of the same name, the character was fairly close to how he appeared in the book: a Vietnam War veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who is mistreated by his fellow countrymen. That all changed with 1985's "Rambo: First Blood Part II," a movie wherein Rambo, through the act of being deployed back into Vietnam to rescue prisoners of war, symbolically gets to "win" the war that America lost. From there, the rest of the franchise saw Rambo being called upon for assistance by other underdogs involved in impossible or hard-odds conflicts around the world, turning him into a sort of morally-motivated mercenary. While the character eventually stopped resembling the resentful, broken soldier of Morrell's book as he became stronger and more traditionally heroic,...

Exclusive: Kai Caster has booked a leading role in the Shane Dax Taylor indie feature Halloween Store and a guest role in Amazon’s Marvel series Spider-Noir.
In Halloween Store, Caster plays the boyfriend of the lead character, Amy (Natalie Lind), and a star quarterback with alternative motives. At first glance, Brock is the epitome of an all-American good boy, but he may just have a dark, sinister side. Simon Rex also stars in the film, which is set on Halloween night inside a costume store where a group of people are stuck and a killer is on the prowl.
Details regarding his character are under wraps. From executive producers/co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot and Sony Pictures TV, Spider-Noir tells the story of an aging and down-on-his-luck private investigator (Nicolas Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as...

Over the course of his acting career, Sylvester Stallonehas not only become a household name himself, but so have his iconic characters. From his breakout role as the titular boxer in the sports drama Rocky back in 1976 to his more recent hits in the mercenary actioner series The Expendables, audiences flock to theaters to watch the onscreen heroes' death-defying exploits again and again. But there was one famous role that not only spurred a five-movie franchise, but also cemented Stallone as an action star for nearly 50 years: John Rambo in Ted Kotcheff's 1982 warfare-thriller First Blood.
The film was based on David Morrell's novel of the same name, and follows the heart-wrenching story of John Rambo, a troubled Vietnam War veteran who must fight to survive a brutal manhunt by local police and military members after trying to get reintegrated into civilian life. This post contains spoilers for "Reacher" season 3 episode 6.
Jack Reacher doesn't need to prove himself as a hero at this point. Across 29 books and what is now almost three seasons of Prime Video's "Reacher" series, the character has proven he is every bit the archetypal American action hero, dispatching armies of enemies with ease and weathering the kind of beatings that would snuff out lesser heroes. He's an itinerant former military policeman with an unwavering commitment to justice and chivalry who is always one step ahead of those that dare to cross him. Fans know the formula and Reacher delivers, time and time again.
But there's no doubt this particular American hero is indebted to those that came before him. While he clearly shares a lot in common with other contemporary characters, such as the similarly unstoppable John Wick, he is also quite clearly the modern equivalent of the muscle-bound...

In the Top 10 on Netflix recently was the 2008 action flick calledRambo. Sometimes called Rambo IV, Rambo: The Fight Continues, or simply John Rambo, the film was the first sequel to the franchise in 20 years, as the title character (played masterfully by Sylvester Stallone) is thrust back into action when a group of Christian missionaries in Burma are kidnapped by a military group. The film itself is incredibly engaging, showing Rambo as a man aimlessly wandering the world in search of peace, only to find himself constantly at war. Of course, even more impressive is that the praises of Rambo were sung by none other than David Morrell, the author of the original First Blood novel, on which the whole franchise is based.

Re-watching the Rambo movies proves that Sylvester Stallone’s franchise lost touch with the thing that originally made the series work. Adapted from author David Morrell’s novel of the same name, First Blood was a 1982 vigilante action movie starring Sylvester Stallone as the Ptsd-afflicted Vietnam veteran John Rambo. Rambo’s first movie was followed by 1985’s bombastic sequel Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1988’s Rambo III, 2008’s franchise reboot Rambo, and 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood. Each of these movies grew gradually gorier, more over-the-top, and more cartoonishly absurd in their depiction of Stallone’s indestructible antihero.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger haven't made a solid action movie since their prison film Escape Plan - which is over a decade old. For many critics, the first Escape Plan movie arrived far too late. Had Arnie and Stallone made a film together in the 1980s or 1990s, that would have been considered a major event. Instead, their first feature-length collaboration - after Arnold had previously cameoed in two of Stallone's The Expendables films - arrived in 2013. Escape Plan bombed domestically and only received 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, but thanks to overseas audiences, it grossed $137 million.
The film was a decent-sized hit, but nobody considered it a highlight in either Stallone or Schwarzenegger's filmographies. Time has been kind to Escape Plan though, and while it lacks the bombast and bodycount of the films they made during their heydays, it's still a great night's entertainment. Sly and Arnie's careers have since gone in different directions,...

In the 1970s, Sylvester Stallone became synonymous with the Rocky movies. Both the first film in 1976 and its sequel in 1978 cemented the underdog boxer as an iconic character, endearing the actor to millions around the globe. Rocky III in 1982 further proved his drawing power, as the film grossed $270 million at the box office against a budget of $17 million. However, that same year, Stallone started a new cinematic legacy that has stood the test of time, and it's finally found a new streaming home.

Actor Sylvester Stallone changed his fate when he wrote and starred in the sports drama Rocky. The Best Picture winner spawned a franchise that has included five more sequels and a spinoff trilogy on Adonis Creed. While the Rocky franchise may have put Stallone on the map, it was his role in the Rambo franchise that made him an action star.
He starred as the Vietnam War veteran John Rambo in Ted Kotcheff’s First Blood. Contrary to the high-adrenaline action extravaganza that was the sequels, the first film was a poignant exploration of Vietnam War veterans’ struggle to integrate back into society while also dealing with their trauma. This reportedly ended darkly for John Rambo in the film originally.

Going into "First Blood," director Ted Kotcheff and star Sylvester Stallone surely weren't aware they were making one of the best action movies ever made and crafting an action icon in the process. But they might have had an inkling, considering they were working from David Morrell's 1972 novel of the same name. The book contained the very mix of Hollywood-style bombast and social critique that would define the very first Rambo movie as the innovative outlier it is within the larger canon. Inspired by two harrowing true stories about war veterans, Morrell wrote John Rambo as a killing machine haunted by his experiences in Vietnam. While he could dispatch enemies with preternatural ease, Rambo was also a believably tortured man, with Morrell using his prose to interrogate the very real psychological effects of serving in 'Nam.

In his review for Netflix's Rebel Ridge, Stephen King compared the action movie with Sylvester Stallone's Rambo. While it is understandable where his opinions about both films come from, it is hard not to notice how his review underscores that Rambo has often been misunderstood. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge was trapped in development hell for several years because of production delays. However, despite the setbacks, the film has finally hit the small screen and is being hailed by viewers and critics as one of the best offerings of the action genre in 2024.
Even before Rebel Ridge landed on Netflix, many could not help but notice its narrative similarities with the first Rambo movie, First Blood. Throughout film history, there have been companies and, for certain stretches, whole studios notorious for churning out garbage. Obviously, American International Pictures had a rep for schlock, but they hit for a shockingly high average at their late 1950s and '60s peak. There's also Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus' Cannon Films, which sparkled with its constellation of B-list action stars like Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson, but Golan was a filmmaker himself with dreams of respectability who courted legit directors like Franco Zeffirelli, Jerry Schatzberg, and Andrei Konchalovsky to make Academy Awards-worthy movies for his exploitation factory.

Stephen King officially approves of Netflix's Rebel Ridge. The movie tells the story of a Marine who is forced to stand against the police after his cousin's bail money is stolen by the officers. Aaron Pierre's Terry Richmond is left to wage a bloody war against the corrupt police department and against the very concept of civil asset forfeiture. Rebel Ridge is inspired by true events, though it takes extreme liberty with its storytelling.

Rebel Ridge sets itself apart by featuring an original story, not just emulating popular action franchises like Rambo and Reacher. Director Jeremy Saulnier's return with Rebel Ridge after a 6-year break is highly anticipated due to his track record of quality over quantity. The protagonist of Rebel Ridge, Terry Richmond, resembles the overpowered characters of Rambo and Reacher, promising an intense one-man army narrative.
An upcoming Netflix film we have been waiting six years for is interestingly being compared with Rambo and Reacher. Given how Rambo and Reacher are two of the most popular franchises in the action thriller genre, it is not surprising that many movies and TV shows try to emulate their formula and recreate their character beats. However, the Netflix film in question is not a mere copycat, even though it is being compared with the two renowned franchises.

Rambo's age in each film closely aligns with Stallone's, reflecting the actor's career evolution and the character's growth onscreen. The franchise has seen Rambo transform from a haunted young man to a redemptive older figure, fighting for respect and battling villainous armies. Sly Stallone has masterfully portrayed John Rambo across nearly four decades, showcasing the character's depth and resilience despite his aging.

Interestingly, the author of the book, David Morrell, who created the character was critical of how the character in the movies deviated from his anti-war message in the books. First Blood became so successful that it spawned another four films in the Rambo franchise.

Michael B. Jordan played Adonis Creed in Ryan Coogler’s Creed franchise, where Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa mentored him in the absence of his father, Apollo Creed. The elder Creed was killed in Rocky IV, a decision that Stallone has revealed he wished he could undo. However, if Apollo Creed never died, would Adonis get his time in the limelight?
Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed || United Artists
Sylvester Stallone would have had a very different Rocky franchise if Carl Weathers’s Apollo Creed had survived his stilt with Ivan Drago. Creed was slain inside the ring during an exhibition match with the Russian boxer to establish and preserve the narrative drama of Rocky IV.

Sylvester Stallone is credited to have created some of the best action movies of all time. Apart from the Rocky franchise, the actor’s portrayal of the war veteran in the Rambo movies is celebrated for their intense action sequences and emotional depth. Offering a compelling exploration of the effects of wars on individuals, the series is now a cult classic.

The first Rambo movie was more of a thorough narrative that explored what war veterans go through. But the sequels changed their tone and showed him as a poster boy for the military, which the author David Morrell deeply disliked.

Rambo evolved from a thoughtful portrayal of a Ptsd-stricken veteran in First Blood to an over-the-top action hero in subsequent movies. Iconic Rambo quotes capture the character's inner struggle and his dual identity as a tragic hero and a one-man army. Rambo's memorable lines, like "Nothing is over! Nothing!" in First Blood, reveal a vulnerable side beneath the tough exterior.
John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is a man of few words, but there have been many memorable Rambo quotes over the course of the franchise. The Rambo movies had an unexpected evolution, starting with 1982's First Blood, which was a more thoughtful and not overly violent examination of a Vietnam veteran dealing with Ptsd and pushing back against the small-town police who harass him. However, from there, the movie exploded into an over-the-top and bombastic action movie franchise that cemented Rambo as one of the best action heroes of all time.

The subsequent Rambo films failed to capture the complex and tragic themes of the original First Blood. Rambo's character was reinvented as a killing machine, undermining the original film's dramatic complexity. First Blood stands out as a compelling and heartbreaking exploration of John Rambo, far better as a single film than a whole series.
The Rambo franchise may have become a box office success, but the four later additions to the series all failed to replicate what made First Blood such a compelling film in the first place. Released in 1982 and based on the novel of the same name by David Morrell, First Blood focuses on Vietnam War veteran John Rambo as he finds himself increasingly drawn into a conflict with a small-town police force. The film established one of Sylvester Stallone's most iconic characters and led to a franchise that would go on to make over $800 million at the box office.
