As they are in America, crime shows are a staple in the British television industry, indeed some of the best British TV shows of all time are crime series. But more than just espionage-oriented programming or shows that take the perspective of the criminals themselves, the United Kingdom has an extensive tradition of finely crafted detective stories. From Agatha Christie movies to modern police procedurals, there is no shortage of detective-centric British mysteries in film and television. Be it period piece whodunits to political conspiracies, there are plenty of excellent shows centered on detective figures.
To clarify, though there are many superb British crime shows, this list consists of detective-driven series. This can be police procedurals or less professionally affiliated sleuths like the iconic Sherlock Holmes. The focus here are mystery shows involving a clear level of investigation and deductive reasoning to solve the crimes at hand. Here are the...

New ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ Image Traps Keira Knightley in a Luxurious Paranoia Thriller [Exclusive]
As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event, we are thrilled to exclusively debut a first look at The Woman in Cabin 10, the upcoming Netflix thriller starring Keira Knightley and directed by Simon Stone, premiering Fall 2025. Based on Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel, the film drops audiences into a world of quiet dread aboard a seemingly serene luxury yacht — where nothing, and no one, can be trusted.
Knightley stars as travel journalist Lo Blacklock, who boards an exclusive yacht for a writing assignment and quickly finds herself in a waking nightmare. Late one night, she sees what she believes is a woman thrown overboard. But when she raises the alarm, she’s told no one is missing — all passengers and crew are accounted for. Dismissed, disbelieved, and isolated in open waters, Lo continues searching for the truth, even as her own safety begins to slip away. Speaking to Collider,...

Hannah Waddingham and Keira Knightley together in a psychological thriller? Sign me up! Both of them will star in Netflix’s The Woman in Cabin 10. The upcoming film is directed by Simon Stone and is based on Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 novel of the same name. The film is about a journalist who watches someone get thrown overboard a luxury yacht. However, she is told that nothing happened and that all the crew and passengers are accounted for.
Even though no one believes her, she puts her life in danger to uncover the truth. Having Knightley and Waddingham in it will surely infuse the suspense-filled narrative with powerful female leads who can give the characters the gravitas and range they require. Waddingham broke out as a powerhouse performer after holding her own as Rebecca Welton opposite Ted Lasso co-stars Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein.

Last year, we learned that the Netflix streaming service had gotten a new film chief in Dan Lin – and one of the first projects Lin greenlit at the streamer is an adaptation of author Ruth Ware’s bestselling 2016 thriller novel The Woman in Cabin 10, which had Keira Knightley attached to star in it as the titular woman. Now, Netflix has announced that the film is set to have its streaming premiere on October 10th – and to start building the hype, they have unveiled a batch of first look images, which can be seen at the bottom of this article.

“I’ve said in acknowledgements before that it takes a village to make a book, but what I learned going on set for Cabin 10 is that it takes a whole town to make a film – it’s truly amazing seeing so many people working so hard on something you created,” said Ruth Ware.

It’s no secret that we’re living in the era of streaming saturation and IP gold rushes to the point of fatigue.
Ironically, the most overlooked goldmine television has barely tapped into is what flows directly to our ears: fiction podcasts!
As one of a handful of things that carried me through the pandemic, I can attest to how audio dramas have been quietly and carefully crafting deeply cinematic, emotionally charged, and narratively daring stories for years.

Shockingly, only a few have leaped to television. Homecoming, Limetown, and Archive 81 are among the most notable.
But there are so many that still lie in wait for someone to pluck them up, negotiate accordingly, and bring them from our headphones to our small screens.

It looks like Sharon Stone could be returning to the role that turned her into a Hollywood star and became the original “pause challenge” long before TikTok existed. In a surprising turn of events, Basic Instinct screenwriter Joe Eszterhas is reportedly reviving the erotic thriller franchise for United Artists and Amazon MGM Studio after closing a $4 million deal.
In what is said to be the biggest spec script sale of 2025 (as per The Wrap), Stone could reprise her role as Catherine Tramell for a third time, and according to the source discussing the deal, the film would be an “anti-woke” reboot of the franchise. Although there have been no further details revealed about what the plot could look like or how Stone’s Tramell could figure in a movie where she originally played a post-feminist icon that didn’t mind which gender she dabbled with while running rings around police.

Few TV franchises carry the gravitas of The Walking Dead. AMC's juggernaut saga began all the way back in 2010 when the six-episode adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comic series of the same name brought Rick Grimes to the small screen, and it hasn't looked back since. The characters of the Twd Universe have survived the apocalypse, the evils of the undead (and the evils of the humanity that still lived), and even the end of the original series to continue to thrill audiences around the world.
The Walking Dead found early success right out of the gate but it would go on to achieve bigger wins throughout its 11-season run, growing its audiences significantly throughout its first six seasons. Although viewership waned throughout the second half of its run, the franchise's immense popularity allowed it to spawn multiple spinoffs during its run. And now, even after the original show has come to an end,...

Exclusive: “Where there’s a hit, there’s a false writ,” Vertigo Films co-founder James Richardson has declared after a judge threw out a lawsuit, in which a writer claimed that Vertigo’s Roman Empire series Britannia was stolen.

The 2007 CBS TV series "Viva Laughlin" was a remake of the show "Blackpool," which ran on BBC One in the mid-2000s. In the British series, David Morrissey played Ripley Holden, a character who became embroiled in a murder in a local video arcade right when he was planning on transforming it into a hotel and casino. Georgia Taylor played Shyanne, Ripley's bratty daughter, while Sarah Parish portrayed Ripley's wife Natalie, and erstwhile "Doctor Who" star David Tennant played a cop who was convinced that Ripley was guilty. "Blackpool" ran for six episodes in 2004 and then returned for a 2006 TV movie titled "Viva Blackpool." The show's main selling point was that it featured multiple musical numbers in every episode. The works of Elvis Presley, Elvis Costello, Queen, Billy Idol, the Clash, and many others were crooned by the cast.

If you were an actor in the 2010s looking for job security, "The Walking Dead" was not the show for you. The series was famous for killing major characters in a way that makes rewatching the early seasons extra depressing. You'll be enjoying a season 1 scene with Andrea (Laurie Holden), Dale (Jeffrey DeMunn), Lori (Sarah Wayne Callies), and Shane (Jon Bernthal), only to remember that not a single one of them made it past season 3. Some characters did manage to stick around for surprisingly long, like Carol (Melissa McBride) or Daryl (Norman Reedus), but most people on the show only stuck around for two or three seasons tops.
Case in point: Tyreese (Chad Coleman) was introduced midway through season 3 before being killed off halfway through season 5. Admittedly, though, casual fans didn't have much hope for Tyreese in particular, given the early seasons' suspicious tendency of killing off established Black characters...

Oh, Andrea. If there's any character who "The Walking Dead" television series fumbled worse, I can't think of them. The Andrea of comics was one of the longest lasting and most beloved characters in the series, whereas Laurie Holden's version of Andrea in the TV show was despised. It's easy to draw a line from the dislike of her character to her early death in the season 3 finale, "Welcome to the Tombs."
Andrea's "Walking Dead" season 3 arc was invented for the show whole cloth, and a major departure from the comics. She winds up at Woodbury, the seemingly normal town run by the Governor (David Morrissey). Andrea clings to the illusion of the pre-apocalyptic world, so much so that she spends a whole half-season refusing to return to her friends. Her loyalty to Woodbury bites her. She gets a goodbye to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), then...

AMC's The Walking Dead was must-watch television for over a decade. The zombie/apocalypse TV series saw Rick Grimes and his merry band of survivors attempt to outlast the dangers of the undead in a world with no laws, no boundaries, and very little hope. And perhaps the scariest thing about the entire series is that, of all the threats that came their way, the most dangerous were the human ones.
It's insane to think about, but over the course of the show's 11-season run, Rick, Daryl Dixon, Carol Peletier, Maggie and Glenn Rhee, and all of the other survivors encountered some dastardly threats (some still do on the shared universe's many spinoffs). From Negan to The Commonwealth, there were dangers aplenty, but perhaps the most notorious of them all was The Governor.

So far, Prime Targetis one of those shows that feels like it has some big mystery we’re waiting for the reveal to, but it might lose its audience before getting there. The mystery surrounding Mallinder's (David Morrissey) death, Ed's (Leo Woodall) prime finder formula, and the library in Baghdad are intriguing on the surface, but the show is struggling to translate this intrigue into anything tangible to engage with on screen. A large part of this is because Ed is simply not a very interesting protagonist emotionally, which causes the premise to lack weight when we need to understand why this formula is so important. Instead, it should be Professor Andrea (Sidse Babett Knudsen) due to her greater emotional range and urgency in discovering the truth behind the math. It should be made clear that this isn't entirely Woodall's fault. This performance is not one of his better ones,...

Four episodes into its freshman season, Prime Target will return with the premiere of episode 5, titled "House of Wisdom," on Feb. 12 on Apple TV+. Ahead of the episode's arrival, Cbr has an exclusive sneak peek to unveil one of its major moments.
In the episode, per the official description, "Ed (Leo Woodall) and Taylah (Quintessa Swindell) join Andrea (Sidse Babett Knudsen) in Baghdad, where they unearth ancient, buried answers—and get caught in the crosshairs of an unknown enemy." The new clip reveals the moment when Ed and Taylah share with Andrea that her husband Robert's (David Morrissey) death is not what it seems, while also divulging that they've had him under surveillance for a very long time. It's clearly a lot to take in for Andrea, as fans can see by watching the video below.

The Apple TV+ thriller Prime Target plunges viewers into a world that's equal parts academic and dramatic. Its protagonist is mathematics prodigy Edward Brooks, who finds himself thrust into the kind of global conspiracy that TV audiences love. But the antisocial Edward must rely on government agent Taylah Sanders to help him unravel said conspiracy and stay alive, as she has skills that he doesn't -- including knowing how to deal with the rest of the world.
It sounds like a series that could be very complicated, but stars Leo Woodall (who plays Edward) and Quintessa Swindell (who portrays Taylah) explain how much audiences actually need to know to watch Prime Target. They also talk about how much they knew about the story going into the filming experience. Plus, what would they consider the highlights of the show?

This post contains spoilers from Prime Target episode 1 from this point forward.
When you start watching Prime Target on Apple TV+ but don't immediately see Leo Woodall, don't worry. You're watching the right show!
The opening scene of the thriller series takes place in Baghdad, Iraq, where a mother and daughter separate during an explosion. Unfortunately, they end up falling through a hole in the ground, revealing an underground structure that will likely have historical significance (and significance to the story).
Following the opening sequence, we meet Woodall's Ed Brooks, who's not only handsome and part of the rowing team but also a math genius unenthused by classes and social norms. He's always scribbling numbers in his notepad, and when he's not, he's visiting a former professor with Alzheimer's. Ed wants to put focus on a particular part of his research but Professor Osborne refuses.

With the success of Slow Horses and The Agency, we’ve seen a large influx of espionage shows coming to TV. Prime Target, from producer Ridley Scott and creator Steve Thompson, hopes to capture the same magic as each of those shows. With two young stars, Leo Woodall and Quintessa Swindell, the series could easily become another breakout hit for Apple TV+. Unfortunately, overuse of technical exposition and frustratingly detached characters turn Prime Target into a slog.

People say maths is boring, but the latest Apple TV+ thriller really goes out of its way to convince you otherwise. That's probably why Prime Target puts Leo Woodall front and centre for a start: you can't really go wrong with the man who made us swoon in One Day and gasp in The White Lotus. It also helps that his character, Edward, soon develops feelings for a cute bartender played by Hawkeye star Fra Fee, abs and all. Then there's Leo's co-lead, Quintessa Swindell, whose arrival in Episode 2 brings extra charisma, as a secret agent who's out of their depth, but still trying their best. Yet even with all that going for it, something's not quite adding up…
We're told that, "Math nerds are probably the most dangerous people on the planet," but this line, like many others throughout the show, feels forced and even clunky.

There’s not much I remember about high-school calculus, more than two decades since my last class. But one thing I do recall being taught over and over was the importance of showing the math. How you built your case and demonstrated your logic was just as important, we were told, as whether you got to the right answer.
The new conspiracy thriller Prime Target gets to the right answer, I suppose, in that it looks expensive (there’s that Apple TV+ money), serves up basically competent if unmemorable action and raises worthwhile if not exactly novel debates. But it does not show the math, serving two-dimensional pawns instead of three-dimensional characters and lofty-sounding speeches instead of nuanced dialogue — and, as a result, fails to add up to much at all.
Its protagonist, Ed (Leo Woodall), is a Cambridge postgrad on the verge of creating a theorem to find prime numbers.

If anyone can dethrone Tom Cruise from the top of the streaming charts, it's going to be Laurence Fishburne. His 2024 sci-fi film, Slingshot, knocked Top Gun: Maverick from the top spot on the Paramount+ streaming chart.
The film stars Casey Affleck as ambitious John, joining Fishburne as Captain Franks, Tomer Capone as Nash, and Emily Beecham as John's girlfriend, Zoe. Directed by Mikael Håfström (1408), Slingshot is about a team of astronauts heading on a multi-year mission to one of Saturn's moons, Titan, to gather different natural materials to help Earth.
They use a technique called the slingshot, where the ship takes advantage of the gravitational field of a planet to travel, which also saves fuel. The crew must go through 90-day hibernation cycles for the long journey. When John wakes up from one of many hibernation cycles, he begins to suffer from paranoia and loses touch with reality.
