The Andrea of comics was one of the longest lasting and most beloved characters in the series, whereas Laurie Holden's version of Andrea in the TV show was despised. The opening scene of the thriller series takes place in Baghdad, Iraq, where a mother and daughter separate during an explosion. Unfortunately, they end up falling through a hole in the ground, revealing an underground structure that will likely have historical significance (and significance to the story).

Following the opening sequence, we meet Woodall's Ed Brooks, who's not only handsome and part of the rowing team but also a math genius unenthused by classes and social norms. He's always scribbling numbers in his notepad, and when he's not, he's visiting a former professor with Alzheimer's. Ed wants to put focus on a particular part of his research but Professor Osborne refuses.

People say maths is boring, but the latest Apple TV+ thriller really goes out of its way to convince you otherwise. That's probably why Prime Target puts Leo Woodall front and centre for a start: you can't really go wrong with the man who made us swoon in One Day and gasp in The White Lotus. It also helps that his character, Edward, soon develops feelings for a cute bartender played by Hawkeye star Fra Fee, abs and all. Then there's Leo's co-lead, Quintessa Swindell, whose arrival in Episode 2 brings extra charisma, as a secret agent who's out of their depth, but still trying their best. Yet even with all that going for it, something's not quite adding up…

We're told that, "Math nerds are probably the most dangerous people on the planet," but this line, like many others throughout the show, feels forced and even clunky.

There’s not much I remember about high-school calculus, more than two decades since my last class. But one thing I do recall being taught over and over was the importance of showing the math. How you built your case and demonstrated your logic was just as important, we were told, as whether you got to the right answer.

The new conspiracy thriller Prime Target gets to the right answer, I suppose, in that it looks expensive (there’s that Apple TV+ money), serves up basically competent if unmemorable action and raises worthwhile if not exactly novel debates. But it does not show the math, serving two-dimensional pawns instead of three-dimensional characters and lofty-sounding speeches instead of nuanced dialogue — and, as a result, fails to add up to much at all.

Its protagonist, Ed (Leo Woodall), is a Cambridge postgrad on the verge of creating a theorem to find prime numbers.

Apple TV+ has unveiled the first official trailer for the eight-episode series “Prime Target,” enticing viewers with a conspiracy and the fate of the world.

Leo Woodall stars as Edward Brooks (“The White Lotus”), a gifted math postgraduate who is about to find a key breakthrough in prime number patterns.
