Tom Hanks was nominated for an Academy Award for his 1988 film, Big. He was exceptional in the film as Josh Baskin, a 13-year-old boy who is magically turned into an adult man. However, the film almost made a major mistake by not casting Hanks in the lead role in the film. Instead, the film initially preferred Harrison Ford in the role.
However, it is highly unlikely that Ford could’ve given the same performance that Hanks did in the film. The film was a huge hit at the time, making $151.7 million at the box office against a budget of $18 million. It was a critical favorite as well, also thanks to the Forrest Gump actor’s performance.

Penny Marshall's 1988 comedy smash-hit "Big" had a fun, fantastical premise. A 12-year-old boy named Josh (David Moscow) is tired of being treated like a kid, feeling that the world condescends to people of his age group all too often. Despondent, Josh visits a carnival and finds a coin-operated fortune-teller/wish-granting machine called Zoltar. He inserts his money and wishes to be "big," only to awaken the morning after in the body of Tom Hanks, who was 32 at the time. Suddenly 20 years older, Josh flees his panicked mother (Mercedes Ruehl), who doesn't recognize him, and is forced to enter the adult work force to survive. The only person who knows his secret is his best friend Billy (Jared Rushton).
"Big" was a tour de force from everyone involved in its making and went on to be nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (for Hanks) and Best Original Screenplay...

The best Jessica Alba movies and TV shows include everything from horror movies and superhero efforts to action thrillers, TV shows, and more. Alba started as a child actor when she was 13 and starred in the movies Camp Nowhere and The Secret World of Alex Mack. This led to her picking up her first major television role when she was only 19 and starred in the James Cameron-produced action series Dark Angel.
Since that time, Alba has starred in everything from comic book movies like Sin City and Fantastic Four to horror films like The Eye and romantic comedies like Valentine’s Day. While she has received praise for several roles she has played throughout her career, it has not resulted in many awards. At the same time, she has faced criticism, including picking up Razzie Award nominations in 2006, 2008, and 2011. Despite this, Alba’s work remains popular, and she continues...

It's time for a quick history lesson! In 1899, a newsboys' strike was held across New York City for two weeks. The strikers demanded increased wages for newsboys, who drove a chunk of the sales in the afternoons and evenings but ended up earning little to nothing. Circulation for Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst's newspapers was halted during this time, and the strike eventually succeeded/worked in favor of the newsboys, although other demands had to be met with compromise.
The impact of this event was so rousing that Disney made a film musical — "Newsies" — inspired by the strike in 1992, with Kenny Ortega helming the project. A young Christian Bale played strike leader Jack "Cowboy" Kelly, and composer Alan Menken — who has scored almost every Disney animated film you know and love — crafted 12 original songs for this now-beloved movie. Despite these promising elements, however, the film did not perform well in theaters,...

Most romance movies present an idealized vision of relationships, but some of them are actually quite creepy when examined closely. Societal attitudes toward relationships are changing all the time, which means that some old classic romance movies are being reevaluated. Things which seemed fine years ago may now appear to be a little disturbing, especially if there are uneven power dynamics in a relationship.
Another thing which can contribute to romance movies seeming creepy is the tone. A playful, humorous movie can often conceal a story that's actually rather dark when it's taken at face value. It's easy to get swept away when a movie tells its story with charm and confidence, but sometimes there's just no ignoring the uncomfortable moments. If these movies had a slightly different approach, they could just as easily be horror movies about creepy behavior.

Tom Hanks is one of the most celebrated actors of his generation and possibly the most beloved American movie star from the second half of the 20th century. Over his four decades in Hollywood, he's proven himself capable of completely disappearing into a variety of roles across both comedy and drama.
Yet whatever role Hanks is playing, his reassuring warmness can always be felt emanating off the screen. Likeability can be a poisonous term in Hollywood, but Hanks has always had an uncanny ability to find the soul of his characters and present it completely openly on screen in a way that audiences can't help but root for. He's more than an actor; he's an American institution, and Hollywood would look very different without him.

Director Penny Marshall's "Big" was, in many ways, the film that made Tom Hanks. Released in 1988, Marshall's hit comedy centers on Josh (David Moscow), a 12-year old boy whose wish to be "big" results in him falling asleep one night only to wake up a 30-something adult (Hanks). Thanks to his child-like outlook, Josh is quickly able to snag a high-profile job at a lucrative toy company. He even begins a romance with his co-worker Susan (Elizabeth Perkins), who finds his sincerity and innocence a welcome balm after years of dating self-absorbed, insecure men.
Yes, Josh and Susan's relationship is kind of weird and creepy when you ignore the magical realist conceit, but Marshall was well-aware of that and took care to handle their love story as sensitively as possible. "Big" is equally thoughtful in the way it shows Josh struggling to adjust to the harsh realities of adult...

If you can remember sitting in a movie theater watching Tom Hanks as a grown-up child, we’ve got some news for you: You’re Big! That’s a nice way of saying you’re all grown up now, too — because it’s been 30 years since the release of director Penny Marshall’s fantasy-comedy classic Big, and to mark the occasion the movie is returning to theaters this July.
Thirty years ago this summer, 12-year-old Josh Baskin uttered a secret wish to a carnival fortune-teller machine and made movie history as he grew up overnight, turning director Penny Marshall’s Big into a box-office smash and one of the defining films of the 1980s.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Big, Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Twentieth Century Fox are bringing its magic back to movie theaters throughout the U.S. as part of the yearlong TCM Big Screen Classics series.

There are plenty of fairy tales told about small town girls who cross paths with a famous actor or rock star and fall in love and the two live happily ever after. This is not one of those stories. Desolation is a nightmare, about a girl falling for a movie star and relocating with him to a very haunted Hollywood, and Et has the first trailer.
Katie (Dominik García-Lorido) ignores all the red flags when actor Jay Cutter (Pitch Perfect's Brock Kelly) boasts about the high-profile homicides that happened in his building and soon finds herself seeing dead people, ghostly children and, naturally, a seriously sinister priest. And in that same season, another kid won for Best Young Actor in a Drama Christian Bale for 'Empire of the Sun.'...

Body switch movies are probably some of the most fun, unsung films to ever grace the silver screen. They are simple tales of people (usually humans) switching bodies, often to hilarious effect when they have to live the other person's life. Then there's the aspect of how are they going to switch back? And suddenly you have a genre of movies that borders on the fantastic.
Another aspect of these films is precisely how the switch happens. Sometimes the actors merely bump into one another. Other times they get something that serves as a conduit to make the switch happen. Then there's those times (i.e. Mulholland Drive) where the actors become other people simply because that's just what makes sense for the story that a particular director is telling.
It is the fantastical nature of these films, the idea that a body switch of comedic (and sometimes tragic) proportions can happen,...

David Moscow has a new wish for Zoltar -- but this time, he wants money! The now-40-year-old actor, who stole our hearts in 1988 as Josh Baskin in "Big," recreated some of his more memorable scenes to raise funds for his Kickstarter campaign. Sporting his iconic red and white letterman jacket, the former child star tries his luck with Zoltar yet again. "I wish I had money to finish my movie," he tells the machine. "If only life was like a movie, I would have the money for post-production already." Later in the clip, David describes the premise of his new movie -- a thriller called "Desolation." The film is about a small town girl, Katie, who follows a "heartthrob" actor to Hollywood only to have things take a sinister turn. "One of the reasons I loved the script is because it reminded me of the psychological thrillers in the...

Big remains one of our favourite Tom Hanks childhood movies (perhaps losing out to Turner and Hooch, boy did that make us blub, we barely held it together) so we're slightly unnerved by reports that a TV series based on the film has been commissioned.
Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce are now said to have received a script plus penalty commitment from broadcaster Fox for the half-hour comedy series, which will explore what it means to be both an adult and child in today's world.
The 1988 Oscar-nominated movie, written by Gary Ross and Anne Spielberg, sees a boy's simple wish to be big come true as a 13-year-old is transformed into a 30-year-old overnight.
We take a nostalgic look at the cast of the huge hit - including Tom Hanks and John Heard - and what came next below:

Fox is teaming up with Enlisted producers Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce for a half-hour comedy series based on the hit 1988 movie Big starring Tom Hanks.
Kevin Biegel and Mike Royce are writing the pilot episode, loosely based on the movie, which explores what it means to be a kid and also an adult in the 21st Century, and how confusing each part of one's life can be.
Tom Hanks played Josh in Big, a young boy who makes a wish to be big through a magical machine, only to wake up the next day as a full-grown adult. Elizabeth Perkins, Robert Loggia and John Heard co-starred in the comedy, which was directed by Penny Marshall. The film earned over $150 million worldwide during its theatrical run.

The second audition of David Moscow's career involved Penny Marshall, Robert De Niro, and a script about a 12-year-old Jersey boy who wishes "to be big." Though De Niro passed on the role made iconic by Tom Hanks, "Big" became the most recognized film on Moscow's career resume. "Personally and professionally, it was a complete change," Moscow said in a recent interview marking the classic comedy's 25th anniversary. "At that period of time I was 12, and my mom would be scolding me for being bad on the street, and then suddenly people would come up to me and be like, 'Hey, can I have your autograph?' ... It was a wild time, it was a wild way to be introduced into the business." Moscow has since turned his focus from acting. He produced indie horror comedy "Hellbenders" ("'Ghostbusters meets 'The Hangover'"), which premiered during Tiff 2012's Midnight Madness screening series,...

Heart and soul.
It’s what Josh Baskin and MacMillan play during the memorable dance scene in 1988’s Big but it’s also what the film is infused with, making it stand up to the test of time. Yeah, its look is dated thanks to bad hair and big shoulder pads, but the story of a 13 year old’s wish to become an adult endures.
20th Century Home Entertainment has released Big 25th Anniversary Edition this week, in time for last minute stocking stuffers. It belongs under every tree because it’s just so well crafted, explaining how Tom Hanks earned an Oscar nomination for his performance. His work stems from the Academy Award nominated script by Gary Ross and Annie Spielberg.

Walking into the after-party for her Saturday Night Live hosting gig in the wee hours of Nov. 3, Kerry Washington did something shocking: She grabbed the hand of her husband, former 49ers cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and held it in public. But then again, she has a lot to be happy about at the moment: her loving marriage, her popular TV series, Scandal, and a baby on the way. "Kerry's in it to win it,...

Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of Big, the movie that boosted Tom Hanks from being just a funny leading man to an Oscar-worthy movie star. It’s also the comedy that put filmmaker Gary Ross on the map as he too earned an Academy Award nomination for this, his first feature script (co-written by Steven Spielberg’s sister, Anne). Directed by Penny Marshall, it was a word of mouth kind of hit, having opened in second place behind Crocodile Dundee II in its second week then going on to become the fourth highest grossing movie of 1988. For those of us around the same age as Josh Haskins (David Moscow/Hanks) at the time, it was a thought-provoking What If? situation even if most of us found a lot of the scenarios and behavior to be well-below the character’s maturity level. The tricky thing about Big in terms of highlighting its best moments is that it’s...
