The Happy Days Cast's Lawsuit Against CBS, Explained
Image
Garry Marshall's 1974 sitcom "Happy Days" was a phenomenon. It started slow, but gained popularity over its first few seasons, and eventually lasted a massive 255 episodes over 11 seasons. It would spawn four spin-off shows in the form of "Laverne & Shirley," "Blansky's Beauties," "Mork & Mindy," and "Joanie Loves Chachi." One could even debate that the obscure angelic sitcom "Out of the Blue" counts, as it had a crossover with "Mork & Mindy." The series spawned piles upon piles of merch, attracting a wide audience of kids who weren't old enough to remember the time of the show's setting.

Set in the suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the mid-1950s, "Happy Days" tapped into Boomer nostalgia like nothing before, presenting the past (at least as far as white suburbanites were concerned) as a simpler, sillier, more idealized time. It was about relationship issues, friendships, family, and the act of just hanging out.

Why Ron Howard's Richie Cunningham Left Happy Days
Image
When Garry Marshall's "Happy Days" premiered on ABC in 1974, the sitcom caught a ride on a wave of Baby Boomer nostalgia generated by George Lucas' "American Graffiti" the previous year. That film was like a time machine for this generation, and they wanted to keep going back over and over again. Alas, this being the pre-vcr and pre-cable age, if they were looking to take that nostalgia trip at home, they were going to be waiting a couple of years for its network television premiere. So Marshall's series, which looked and sounded a good deal like "American Graffiti," was a more than suitable substitute.

Aside from sharing its theme song (Bill Haley and His Comets' "Rock Around the Clock") with Lucas' film, "Happy Days" also cast one of the stars of "American Graffiti," Ron Howard, as its protagonist. Unlike most of the show's young cast, Howard wasn't some...

The One Sentimental Item That Henry Winkler Took From The Happy Days Set
Image
When Garry Marshall's 1950s nostalgia trip sitcom "Happy Days" premiered on ABC in 1974, no one involved could've predicted that the series would run for 11 seasons and spawn an alien sitcom that launched the acting career of Robin Williams. But the show, which had the very good fortune of premiering a year after "American Graffiti" tapped into Baby Boomers' wistfulness for their carefree childhoods, hooked television viewers of all ages thanks in large part to the preternatural cool of Henry Winkler's Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli.

After "Happy Days" took a ratings nosedive in its second season, ABC actually tried to retool the series as "Fonzie's Happy Days," which would've disrupted the cozy ensemble vibe of the show (and cost the network star Ron Howard). Fortunately, the ratings improved dramatically to the point where "Happy Days" became the top rated series on TV in its fourth season. And this was...

The unlikely connections between Star Trek and Happy Days will surprise you
Image
What's the connection between Star Trek and Happy Days? There are several: Anson Williams, who played Potsie on Happy Days, later directed two episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and four episodes of Voyager. Don Most, who played Ralph Malph on Happy Days, guest-starred in a Voyager two-parter.

Also, though it cannot be 10,000% proven, it's thought that Robin Williams' Mork costume, which he first wore during a guest appearance on Happy Days, and then later on Mork & Mindy, was created using the costume that Phillip Pine wore during his guest spot as Col. Green in Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Savage Curtain." And, as many Star Trek: The Next Generation fans know, Robin Williams -- a major Trek fan -- almost guest-starred on The Next Generation.

Delving into more detail, Anson Williams directed more than 150 episodes of nearly 40 different shows, as well as several made-for-television movies.

Stars Of ‘Happy Days’ Reunite For First Time In 50 Years
Image
Actors from the classic series Happy Days assembled over the weekend for an emotional reunion.

On Saturday, stars Henry Winkler, Ron Howard, Anson Williams and Don Most gathered at Steel City Con in Pittsburgh.

His co-stars beside him, Winkler told the crowd, “I’m just emotional here…This is the first time that we have appeared this way in 50 years.”

The sitcom Happy Days followed teenager Richie Cunningham (Howard) along with his friends, Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (Winkler), Ralph Ralph (Most) and Potsie Weber (Williams). The show ran from 1974 to 1984 and inspired several spin-offs such as Mork & Mindy and Laverne & Shirley.

The crowd applauded Winkler’s sentimentality, and Howard joked, “But it feels like 50 minutes because we’re having so much fun hanging, and this was sort of our great excuse to come together, so thank you.”

Winkler went on to praise the show’s creator Garry Marshall, along with the...

One Of The Beatles Was A Happy Days Fan, And He Made Sure To Let The Cast Know
Image
If you grew up during the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s, it's likely that "Happy Days" was broadcasting on your television set. Created by the late Garry Marshall, the sitcom initially centered on Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his family. However, Richie's friend Fonzie (Henry Winkler) rose to further prominence despite initially being a secondary character. With "The Fonz" becoming the series' breakout character, the show started to emphasize him above everyone else, which led to some discontent behind the scenes -- star Ron Howard even threatened to quit "Happy Days" altogether.

Viewers who watched "Happy Days" while it was in its original run on television were also likely to have The Beatles' albums spinning on their record players. Although the band broke up in 1970, the Fab Four's initial discography and their output as solo acts dominated popular culture throughout the decade. And in a serendipitous twist of fate,...

Why Don Most's Ralph Malph Left Happy Days
Image
When sitcoms keep bringing in consistent ratings, especially an era-defining example like "Happy Days," it's almost impossible for a network executive to fully give it up. The comedy series ran from 1974 to 1984 over 11 seasons, culminating in an impressive 255 episode run. One of the issues that comes with a show that stays on the air for that long, however, is its inevitable fatigue. After Henry Winkler's big water stunt in the show's fifth season, the phrase "jumping the shark" became an integral part of the cultural lexicon to describe a show that's approached the ceiling on its creative output. But it's not always the audience that loses interest in a show's viability.

A central cast member leaving a beloved long-running sitcom before it finishes is basically a television tradition. Topher Grace left "That '70s Show" before its final season, Steve Carell exited "The Office" at the end of its seventh season,...

Why Ron Howard Threatened To Quit Happy Days Over Fonzie
Image
For much of its 11-season run on ABC, "Happy Days" was one of the most popular shows on network television. Set during the 1950s, the sitcom shamelessly catered to Baby Boomer nostalgia, but also connected strongly with Gen X-ers who enjoyed the antics of its appealing young cast. The music, fashion, and fads might have belonged to their parents, but kids could easily relate to the Cunninghams' lovingly contentious family dynamic, as well as the high-school tumult faced by Richie (Ron Howard), Ralph (Donny Most), and Potsie (Anson Williams).

So, it might come as a surprise to learn that the series was teetering on the brink of cancellation when, after a promising debut season that ranked 16th in the Nielsen ratings, it hemorrhaged viewers and finished 49th after its second season. When creator Gerry Marshall was given a third season to right the ship, he turned the show into a...

The 15 Best Werewolf Shows Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Werewolf shows are a part of the ever-popular fantasy genre of TV shows, and over the years, there have been plenty of series focused on the violence, humor, action, and romance that comes with a lupine transformation once a month on the full moon. Fantasy TV shows have always been wildly popular and while vampire TV shows have generally been the clubhouse leader in terms of fandom and success, werewolves deserve a shoutout too. They may not be as sexy as vampires, smart as witches, or titillating as ghosts, but werewolves have plenty to offer.

Werewolf shows are not simple endeavors. Typically, in lore, people turn into werewolves once a month, and typically they lose all control of their faculties, not exactly caveats that make for easy, character-driven storytelling. The werewolf in the Universal Monsters movies is not a hero after all. So a good TV show based around werewolves...

‘Happy Days’ Alums Ron Howard & Henry Winkler Reunite At The Emmys
Image
It was a Happy Days 50th anniversary reunion tonight at the Emmys, with former stars Ron Howard and Henry Winkler presenting the Emmy for Best Directing for a Comedy Series.

Howard and Winkler appeared on a re-creation of the iconic Arnold’s Drive-In set, when Howard (aka Richie Cunningham), noted that their intro did not include music, specifically the “Happy Days” theme song. “Candice Bergen had a theme song,” said Howard, to which Winkler replied, “Well of course she would get one.”

“Well, I have a solution, you could do it,” said Howard, encouraging Winkler to go play the jukebox as he did on the series. “First of all, I’m out of practice, it takes schooling” joked Winkler, who then did the iconic Fonzie move and got the Happy Days theme song to play. “Well done,” said Howard.

They then presented the Emmy to Christopher Storer for The Bear,...

Celebrate the ‘Happy Days’ 50th anniversary: 25 greatest episodes, ranked [Photos]
Image
What began as a single segment titled “Love and the Television Set” on the anthology series “Love, American Style,” grew to become a top ten sitcom that lasted 11 seasons and defined “cool” for a generation. Set in 1950s Milwaukee, “Happy Days” debuted on January 15, 1974, and, although it was only a moderate success initially, became one of the most iconic TV series of its time.

Ron Howard was already a well-known TV star from his days as Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show,” so it’s not surprising this series centered around his all-American teenage character Richie Cunningham and his middle-class family. In fact, Howard’s appearance in the “Love, American Style” episode led to his casting by George Lucas in the equally nostalgic “American Graffiti” in 1973 — the success of which prompted ABC to pick up “Happy Days.” But it was the character of greaser Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler...

Image
There's been many a book that his been turned into a feature film. Many comic books and cartoons have been turned into feature length properties as well. However, did you know that there are a slew of 1980s movies that inspired cartoons? Yes, you have read that correctly. Even more interesting are the films that were somehow made palatable to be able to exist on such a seemingly benign platform.

The Karate Kid seems like a no-brainer for a second life as a cartoon. What about a film like Rambo: First Blood Part II? Robocop? Or, The Toxic Avenger? Again, you've read that correctly. These are just a few of the movies would be given a shot to make a ton of money in the world of Saturday Morning Cartoons. Some of the cartoons on this list were more successful than others, but by and large making the leap from...

More Than Miyagi Director On Honoring Pat Morita
Image
“I didn’t really think there were that many people out there who were interested in Mr. Miyagi,” Kevin Derek says. “But (it turns out) millions and millions of people are.”

Derek is a martial artist, producer, and documentarian, whose latest documentary, More Than Miyagi: The Pat Morita Story, seeks to humanize the man behind some of pop culture’s most mythical characters. The timing for such a doc couldn’t have been better, but it turns out that was simply good fortune.

“We started shooting this back in 2016, so it was a year before Cobra Kai was even in production,” says Derek. “They didn’t even know that they were going to shoot Cobra Kai.”

Everyone knows Pat Morita from his beloved Oscar-nominated role as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid franchise, and many remember him as Arnold in the hit TV show Happy Days. However, Morita’s TV...

Kevin Smith also remembered Lander for his impact on the “Clerks” filmmaker’s childhood.
