Alan Mowbray

Trivia

Alan Mowbray

Edit
  • Father-in-law of his close friend Douglass Dumbrille, who married Mowbray's 28-year-old daughter when he was 69.
  • A founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.
  • Was a regular patron of the Cock N' Bull, a famous British-style tavern located on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles from 1937 to 1987. Another regular, veteran CBS News commentator Bill Stout, recalled, "I have this image of Alan Mowbray, the British actor, striding in before noon, wearing a London bowler. He'd down two martinis, and two of the runniest soft-boiled eggs you've ever seen, and stride out. What a terrible way to start the day!".
  • Founded the British United Services Club of Los Angeles.
  • Ws a member of the groom's party when John Farrow married Maureen O'Sullivan at St. Monica's Church on 9/12/361936. Also a member of the party was Ainsworth Morgan, screenwriter, author, and founder of the original Cock 'n Bull restaurant on the Sunset Strip in 1937.
  • His last name is pronounced Moe-bree.
  • In 1936, the press announced that George Beranger, Frank Borzage, Malcolm St. Clair, Tom Brown, Mowbray, Henry Mollison, Guinn 'Big Boy' Williams, and Boyd Martin of the Louisville Courier-Journal were selected to attend a dinner held in honor of D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennett.
  • Was a contemporary of (and was occasionally confused with) Henry Daniell. The two slightly resembled one another, and tended to play similar roles: Snooty upper-crust types and elegant man-servants.
