"Those Early 2000s Bangers": MCU Star's Adaptation Of H.G. Wells Classic Gets Glowing Review From VFX Artists 22 Years Later
Image
An MCU star's adaptation of an H.G. Wells classic gets a glowing review from VFX artists 22 years after its release. The English author, a pioneer in science fiction, has seen his imaginative works frequently adapted to the screen since the 1930s. Early adaptations include Island of Lost Souls (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Things to Come (1936), and The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1937), which captured audiences with their groundbreaking special effects and blended the author's thought-provoking themes with cinematic spectacle.

Later adaptations continued to bring the sci-fi author's visionary stories to life, and often reflected contemporary concerns. The War of the Worlds (1953) and The Time Machine (1960) highlighted Cold War fears and a fascination with time travel, respectively. Subsequent remakes – such as The Island of Dr. Moreau, Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005) starring Tom Cruise, and the visually updated The Time Machine (2002) – introduced new interpretations of the author's themes, and almost always with impressive visual effects.

25 mainly forgotten Us number 1 movies from the 2000s
Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...

By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.

The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.

Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?

Horror's Final Girls: What happened to the stars of Halloween, Scream?
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
After a bombardment of terrible sequels and remakes, the horror movie genre is undergoing something of a renaissance of late with the excellent Babadook and this week's It Follows leading the charge.

Both films are driven by strong performances from up-and-coming female stars (Essie Davis and Maika Monroe), which brings to mind a classic horror movie trope: the Final Girl. Most prevalent in slasher films, the Final Girl is the last character standing who confronts a killer/ghost/demon and lives to tell the tale.

Digital Spy looks back at 7 of our favourite horror movie Final Girls, why they're iconic and what they're up to now...

1. Neve Campbell - Sidney Prescott in Scream

Many horror fans thought Drew Barrymore would end up being Scream's Final Girl when they first watched Wes Craven's 1996 horror, but the director offed her in the opening moments leaving Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott to face down Ghostface.

Brandon Routh
Brandon Routh, George Lazenby and the one-hit movie wonders
Brandon Routh
"In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes," it's claimed Andy Warhol once said. Some stars shine much brighter than others, though, and in the case of Hollywood we often see actors hit big early before disappearing without trace.

Brandon Routh, who delivered a sensitive and assured turn as the Man of Steel in 2006's Superman Returns, is one such example. Routh never quite got the breaks he deserved after landing that life-changing role, so it's nice to see him back in the superhero game with an upcoming role as Atom in Arrow.

Digital Spy takes a look back at a handful of stars who couldn't escape their one big role.

Plucked from relative obscurity to lead Bryan Singer's lavish Superman sequel, Routh impressively channelled Christopher Reeve on his big screen debut but found leading man roles difficult to come by in the aftermath.

Samantha Mumba has reportedly signed a $1 million (£642k) contract to star in a Hollywood musical.

The film is said to be on the scale of Les Misérables, with contracts and roles already signed.

The actress, best known for her music career and role in the 2002 adaptation of H.G. Wells's The Time Machine, is said to have revealed the news to her friends and family at a party last week.

A close friend told the Daily Mail: "She was absolutely thrilled that she had landed a lead role in a big-budget Hollywood musical.

Has Rihanna Been Cast in Fast And Furious 6?
Production is slated to begin on Fast and Furious 6 (that’s the working title for now) soon, and director Justin Lin looks to be adding a strong female presence for his Fast Five follow-up. We learned last week that Mma fighter/Haywire star Gina Carano has entered talks to join the car-enthusiast ensemble, and now The Daily Mail claims that Rihanna is set to take on a villainous role in the pic. It’s important to note that The Sun is a somewhat less-than-reputable source, so this casting news should be taken with a grain of salt for the time-being. The artist stars in this summer’s Battleship, but we haven’t seen much of her acting ability in the trailers so it’s hard to judge this casting choice, should it turnout to be true. Remember Samantha Mumba in The Time Machine? Oh, you don't? Dwayne Johnson told Steve...

Rapunzel had the most beautiful, radiant hair the world had ever seen. But Rapunzel’s life was far from wonderful. Samantha Fox in rabies scare
Samantha Fox, former I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here star is apparently receiving treatment after she was bitten by a rabid cat while on holiday in Thailand.

According to the Daily Star, Sam was at dinner with her partner and manager Myra Stratton on the island of Koh Samui when the cat “attacked” her.

Sam told the paper, “I love animals, especially cats, but over there they’re considered like rats and are left to fend for themselves.

“I ended up feeding a lot of them, giving them bits of shellfish after dinner. This one was laying on my feet and I thought we were getting on really well…

“So I went to stroke him but he bit me so hard it went down to the bone.”

Sam was immediately rushed to a medical centre and has continued to receive treatment in the UK since she got back home last week.
