Composer Matthew Herbert Shares What Makes a Good Score and Why He Didn’t Use Spanish Music for ‘Hot Milk’
Image
British musician and DJ Matthew Herbert has pretty much done it all. After making a name for himself in electronic music (his 2003 manifesto “Personal Contract for the Composition of Music” famously emphasizes “no drum machines”) and launching his label Accidental Records, he ended up remixing such iconic artists as Quincy Jones, Ennio Morricone, Serge Gainsbourg, and classical composer Gustav Mahler.

His production work has seen him work with the likes of The Zone of Interest composer Mica Levi, Róisín Murphy (one half of the pop duo Moloko), and frequent collaborator and Icelandic songstress Björk. Best known for turning ordinary or so-called found sound into electronic music, he has also become a go-to partner for film and TV creators looking for a score. Cases in point are such films as A Fantastic Woman and Starve Acre, as well as such TV series as The Responder and Noughts and Crosses.

The 50 Best Albums of 2023
Photographer: Jessica Osber, 2024
Postmodern attempts at genre defiance have become de rigueur for pop artists today. In a streaming-dominated world where we can type away on our laptops to ambient hip-hop in the morning, sing along to old yacht-rock hits on our afternoon commute, and dance to Edm at night, what other way is there to keep our attention than to try to give us everything everywhere all at once? We’ve gotten a few attempts to do just that in 2023, from Kara Jackson’s quietly rebellious blending of folk and R&b, to Yves Tumor’s kitchen-sink instrumentation, to 100 gecs’s audacious and absurd hyperpop assaults.

Many of the artists who appear on this list, though, no longer seem content to just break down old barriers, as they also seek to shatter interpersonal and emotional ones as well. The oft-cited isolation of modern living, heavily exacerbated by the pandemic, has compelled some...

BBC Denies Canceling Singer Róisín Murphy After She Attacked Use Of Puberty Blockers By Trans Kids
Image
The BBC has denied that it canceled singer Róisín Murphy after she said pharmaceutical companies are profiting from “mixed-up” transgender children taking puberty blockers.

The British broadcaster’s radio station 6 Music removed a five-hour celebration of Murphy’s music from its schedule on September 25, but claimed the decision was not related to her puberty blocker comments.

The Daily Mail reported that BBC 6 Music managers met on Monday and discussed Murphy. The programming dedicated to her work was later pulled from the schedule.

The BBC did not deny that the meeting took place or that Murphy was discussed, but said its Artist Collections series is “regularly on rotation” and frequently changes.

The corporation added that Murphy has been played on 6 Music and Radio 2 in recent days, meaning that she has not been banned from the airwaves.

Murphy, best known for Moloko records including Sing It Back, criticized puberty blockers in a Facebook post last month.

Róisín Murphy Hit Parade Review: A Singularly Wild and Weird Musical Cavalcade
Eugene Hornbacker and Murphy in The Hornbacker-Murphy Fight (1894)
It’s been nearly a quarter of a century since Róisín Murphy and Mark Brydon, as electronic music duo Moloko, secured their biggest hit, “Sing It Back.” It’s worth looking back on who else populated the highest echelons of the U.K. charts the time, if only because it underscores how rare it is for an artist like Murphy to maintain such a creative streak. Even by the consistently high standard of her past work, though, Hit Parade represents a new creative peak.

The album contains some of Murphy’s most infectious melodies to date, but as with so much of Hit Parade, there’s far more to songs like “Fader” than just pop hooks. Behind the track’s not-quite-radio-friendly chorus and absurdist lyrics—“I lay eggs every single time I think of you”—lays an expert sample of “Window Shopping” by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Murphy delivers...

Róisín Murphy Decides to ‘Bow Out’ of Trans Health Conversation Following ‘Hurtful’ Comments
Image
Róisín Murphy has decided to remove herself from the conversation surrounding trans rights after a screenshot from Facebook recently circulated on social media that appeared to show the singer criticizing puberty blockers in the context of what she called “little mixed up kids.” In a recent statement, Murphy talked around that particular comment, not to walk back her initial remark, but to “bow out of this conversation within the public domain.”

“I am so sorry my comments have been directly hurtful to many of you. You must have felt a huge shock,...

Heather Lang & Purdie Baumann Reclaim the Sacredness of Dance and Community With Experimental Short ‘Simulation’
Image
The beauty of dance, for me, comes in the way in which it transcends barriers of language to communicate in a universal manner. It has the ability to embrace the emotional, the primal, and champion the importance of community and our shared experience. This core tenet is central to Heather Lang and Purdie Baumann’s experimental short Simulation which captures the pure sacredness of dance against the regal backdrop of New York’s One Hanson Place. The piece also operates, in its latter portion, as a homage to the musical stylings of Róisín Murphy and nightlife when it transitions into a colourful, light-driven spectacle. Dn is delighted to premiere Simulation alongside a conversation with Lang where she discusses the film’s surprising evolution, the diversity she wanted to foster with her dance troupe, and the importance of location and costume in establishing the short’s communal sensibility.

Where did your...

Watch: Dance Music Gets Classy
Shutter shades, t-shirts, jeans and sneaks: Blame Lmfao, but our go-to dance-party outfits aren't what they used to be.

In his new music video for "Golden Era," dance music legend David Morales looks to turn back the clock to a time when a night out meant looking good and engaging in some very dignified fun.

"I decided to do a video for 'Golden Era' because the song lends itself to a story," Morales told HuffPost Entertainment. "I wanted to get away from doing a traditional 'dance' music video -- it's why I decided to go with a film directer as opposed to a typical video director. I wanted the video to have a movie vibe to it."

The video for the single was directed by Victor Buhler, a filmmaker perhaps best known for 2005's "Rikers High," a documentary which took viewers inside the school at New York's infamous Riker's Island prison.

Rising starlet Imogen Poots has joined the film adaptation of Nick Hornby's novel "A Long Way Down," which has Pascal Chaumeil at the helm. She'll star along side Toni Collette, Pierce Brosnan and Emile Hirsch, who previously joined the tale of four disparate individuals who meet one another on a London rooftop on New Year's Eve, all with the same intention to commit suicide. Lensing begins this September in London from a script by Jack Thorne, whose debut film "The Scouting Book For Boys" earned major praise. [THR]

Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" featured an excellent performance by the versatile Steve Coogan as Factory Records head Tony Martin, and the actor is now set to return to the '70's British music scene. Coogan is joining Elaine Constantine's "Northern Soul,...

Cat Deeley
Sytycd Recap: 10 Across the Board
Cat Deeley
So You Think You Can Dance delivered surprising twists aplenty on Wednesday night. Nine of the 10 remaining dancers scored rave reviews from the judges. One choreographer got spanked rather harshly by this week’s guest panelist. And an All-Star dancer bled (rather sexily) for his art. But nothing will be more shocking than seeing one of Season 8′s fabulous female contestants head home on this week’s results show. (Shouldn’t the FCC step in and threaten Fox with a hefty fine for denying us another week of one of these singularly fierce ladies? And doesn’t that sentence make...

Cat Deeley, Matthew Morrison, Stephen Boss, and JoJo Siwa in So You Think You Can Dance (2005)
How to tell if you are watching a good 'So You Think You Can Dance' audition
Cat Deeley, Matthew Morrison, Stephen Boss, and JoJo Siwa in So You Think You Can Dance (2005)
So You Think You Can Dance’s audition rounds can get confusing. And not just because of Lil’ C’s dictionary-bending vocabulary. No, sometimes it’s tough to decipher the judges decisions: Why does one dancer get turned away entirely while another seemingly similar dancer picks up a ticket? Why do the judges rave about one dancer while sending through another with cautionary advice? How can you tell apart the Melanie Moores (pictured) from the Danielle Ihles? For your reference, I’ve put together a guide to good dancing, courtesy my experience in both dance and the recapping of Sytycd.

X Factor: Nicolo Festa to perform in The Workshop, Hoxton
Nicolo Festa has revealed details of his upcoming showcase gig.

The quirky singer was the first act to be voted off last year’s X Factor series, after Dannii Minogue asked him to sing, what turned out to be a pretty bad rendition of Lady GaGa’s ‘Bad Romance.

He has been working on making original music ever since and will perform it for the first time in The Workshop, Hoxton this Sunday night.

Speaking to Digital Spy he said: “Contrary to what I might tweet, I’m actually still singing and working very hard.”

“I’ve been in the studio with the folk from Aztec Records and am working on some songs that really define me and my music style. I love the rock and roll from the 70′s; Linda Ronstadt, Queen, Warren Zevon and those types of songs, but also funkier stuff like Talking Heads, Human League, Michael Jackson...

The Hammer & Tongs Collection – DVD Review
Music videos are easy to demonise but these days it’s the avenue most taken into feature film-making for a lot of wannabe directors. Forget the romance of film school. In many ways it harks back to the days of learning on the job and honing your skills as you go along. Like cinema itself, the rise of the music vid as produced a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly.

Hammer & Tongs (Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith) came on the scene during the 1990s Brit Pop era and made highly memorable promos for Blur, Fatboy Slim, Pulp, Supergrass, Moloko and Badly Drawn Boy alongside international groups such as Eels, R.E.M. and The Wannadies. One of the great things about their style and creativity is the exuberance and joy evident in their showreels. As Graham Coxon, the guitarist from Blur explains in the commentary for Coffee & TV,...

Kings Of Leon Join The Ranks Of Absurd Concert Exits
Kings of Leon are used to getting pelted with adoration, adulation and the occasional female undergarment. But on Friday night (July 23), they got a whole new type of fanfare. Only a few songs into their set at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in St. Louis, the band was forced to leave the stage following a steady onslaught of pigeon excrement, dropped by an infestation of the birds who had decided to shack up in the venue's upper rafters. "I was hit by pigeons on each of the first three songs," bassist Jared Followill said. "We had 20 songs on the set list. By the end of the show, I would have been covered from head to toe."

Though the show had to end early, the band can stand by at least one thing: There has certainly never been a high-profile rock concert ended prematurely by bird droppings. However, there are a handful...

'So You Think You Can Dance' Recap: Exit Stage Left For Ballroom Dancer Cristina
By Sandrine Milet

Thursday night's (June 24) "So You Think You Can Dance" results show started off with a bang, as the contestants danced a powerful group number choreographed by none other than the amazing Sonya Tayeh. I could tell right away it was her routine, not only because of the unconventional lines and powerful war-like movements but also because of the music choice. Her songs are always off the beaten path and many times have an electronic vibe. This time, the track in question was "Crookers" by Royal T featuring Roisin Murphy, and the song, along with the ripped red costumes and the amazing top 10 dancers, created a perfect performance.

The night proceeded by unveiling who America voted as the bottom three contestants, and I was shocked when Robert's name was announced. He's a great dancer, has personality and his performance Wednesday night was not nearly as bad as some...

Roisin Murphy has denied reports that she accused Lady GaGa of badly copying her style. The former Moloko frontwoman issued an official statement to refute the comments, saying that the press had taken some remarks out of context and "completely fabricated" others. She is a very talented performer, playing the piano, singing live and dancing too. "I don't care about shoulder pads! Not every female artist needs to be at odds with their contemporaries (more)...

Murphy Gives Beckham's Style The Thumbs-up
The years Victoria Beckham has devoted to fashion have finally earned her the title of style icon, according to stylish singer Roisin Murphy.

The Overpowered singer - who was named the best dressed person of 2007 by British newspaper The Guardian - is a harsh fashion critic, but has hailed the Spice Girl's bold style choices.

And Murphy believes Beckham's influence on the fashion industry will be a lasting one - but concedes she'll never make an impact on the "high brow" market.

She tells Wenn, "I think she's actually got her own style now. I think she's getting there with something that might last. I think she's at the point where she's made some or enough images that will actually stand some kind of test of time.

"It'll never be high brow what she does. But it'll never be that normal either and I kinda like her for that. it's not that average either, it's not bland. she's giving it a go. she makes it work, sometimes."...

Murphy: 'David Beckham Gets On My Tits'
Singer Roisin Murphy has launched a stinging attack on soccer ace David Beckham, accusing him of displaying a "disturbing" lack of charisma whenever he's interviewed.

The former Moloko star is infuriated by the L.A. Galaxy hunk's inability to speak from the heart, claiming he employs a robotic response and a blank facial expression to answer questions about his personal life.

Murphy has issued an appeal to Beckham to stop hiding his true personality on TV - because it makes for dull viewing, and leaves her feeling angry.

She tells Wenn, "He gets on my tits! I saw him on (British talk show) Parkinson and they had this close up of his face. The whole interview was just his face on the screen - his face was filling the screen. And there was nothing there. There was no let-up in the stock answers - he was like a politician, in his own way.

"I find it quite surprising - he doesn't have to be like that. He's a good looking lad and he's really talented. He doesn't have to play it that safe with his own persona. Victoria (Beckham) doesn't do that, does she? She lets slip. But he never lets slip. And there's not even a flicker or a blink and he's straight into the answer he wants to give and to me that's a bit disturbing. He should just let loose a little bit and be himself."...

Moloko To Reunite?
Singer Roisin Murphy is refusing to rule out a Moloko reunion, despite the heartbreak she suffered when her romance with bandmate Mark Brydon ended.

The Overpowered star and Brydon started dating before forming Moloko, but, by 2003, they had split and she was forced to undertake promotional duties alone, which made her feel terrible.

Murphy admits she was an emotional wreck at the time, because she missed spending her days with her ex-boyfriend.

However, the couple are still on friendly terms - and Murphy sees no reason why they couldn't make music as Moloko again in the future.

She tells Wenn, "I would never say never. I know myself if I said, 'No, I'll never do that again,' five, 10 years down the line I'll end up f**king doing it and you'll come back and say, 'Ahhh - you said you'd never do it,' so I'm not going to say I'll never do it."

When asked if she missed her bandmates after Moloko split, she replies, "I did to begin with. I kinda missed them more after I broke up with Mark and was still in love. I missed having someone with me when we were doing interviews and the promo and all that kinda stuff.

"To be fair, he did try to do the promo but it just didn't make sense - we were too miserable together at that point.

"But I miss Mark Brydon, he's a top geezer."...
