Here’s How One ‘Family Guy’ Episode Revived Interest in This Canadian Music Legend
Image
Thanks to Seth MacFarlane and Family Guy’s appreciation for adult contemporary music from the 1970s, Nova Scotian singer Anne Murray found a new audience with members of Stewie’s generation.

The relationship between Family Guy and the music world has always been a close one that excites and confuses fans of both the show and of Conway Twitty alike. MacFarlane’s entire oeuvre is inextricably tied to his background as a trained and talented crooner, and his appreciation for the popular music of generations past that has since fallen out of fashion with the Family Guy demographic has long encouraged younger viewers and listeners to develop an appreciation for classic showtunes, Frank Sinatra Jr. and, of course, Murray, whose appearance as herself in the 2013 Family Guy episode “Chris Cross” sparked a resurgence of youthful interest in early Canadian pop music.

This past Sunday, Murray, 79, accepted a lifetime achievement award...

Michael Bublé Takes Dig at Donald Trump Over Canada at Juno Awards: “We Are Not for Sale”
Image
Michael Bublé struck a pointedly patriotic tone when hosting the Juno Awards on Sunday night as he pushed back at U.S. President Donald Trump amid an escalating tariffs war and talk of turning Canada into the “51st state.”

“Folks, we’re one of a kind. We are beautiful. We are the greatest nation on Earth. And we are not for sale,” the popular crooner told his hometown Vancouver audience when hosting Canada’s music awards. Ever since Trump launched his trade war, set to include a threatened 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada starting April 2, Canadians have responded with a surge of nationalism that has seemingly brought the country together and was echoed by Bublé from his Vancouver award show stage.

“When they go low, we get high, we go high. Probably the same thing,” he jokingly added after an apparent misreading of his opening monologue. “Bottom line, we love this country.

Hayley Williams’ Grandfather Recorded His Debut Album 50 Years Ago. Now, It’s Finally Coming Out
Image
Paramore might have plans to perform headbanging shows for the next couple of decades, or until Hayley Williams‘ neck gives out, but her grandfather Rusty Williams retired his musical dreams long ago.

The 78-year-old recorded an album when he was younger with his close friend and producer Frank Morris. He shared the songs with Hayley just as they were written, sitting at his piano or pulling out his guitar. He was the only one who could conjure those melodies, given that the album never made it much further than the...

Dave Loggins Dies: Grammy-Nominated Songwriter For ‘Please Come To Boston’ Was 76
Image
Dave Loggins, the Grammy nominated Hall of Fame singer/songwriter best known for his 1974 hit, “Please Come To Boston,” died on July 10th at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee. He was 76 years old and no cause was given.

The song that made his career spent two weeks at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in August 1974, and one week atop the Billboard Easy Listening chart. It was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Male Pop Vocal performance. It was released in April 1974 as the first single from his album Apprentice (In a Musical Workshop) and was produced by Jerry Crutchfield.

The three verses of the song contain a plea from the narrator to a woman whom he hopes will join him in Boston, Denver, and Los Angeles. Each verse reaches a sad conclusion: “She said, ‘No – boy would you come home to me.'”

Elliot Page Denounces “Devastating” Rollback of LGBTQ2+ Rights at 2024 Juno Awards
Image
Elliot Page came to the Junos Awards on Sunday night to denounce a rollback of LGBTQ2+ rights after the Umbrella Academy star came out as transgender and nonbinary at the end of 2020.

“We are at a time in history where the rights of LGBTQ2+ people are being revoked, restricted and eliminated throughout the world, and the effects are devastating,” Page said when citing the work by the Tegan and Sara Foundation to support and build social change for trans and queer youth at the Junos in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“If the world was not so hostile to LGBTQ2+ people, we would see ourselves purely as musicians,” Sara Quin, one half of the Canadian indie pop musicians Tegan and Sara, told the Juno audience. She called out the province of Alberta for recently proposing to restrict health care for transgender youth, including halting access to hormone therapy for children aged 15 and under.

Legendary Concert Promoter Ron Delsener Looks Back on 60 Years of Live Music Madness
Image
Long before Live Nation, Clear Channel, Ticketmaster, Stubhub, service fees, gold-circle seats, and anything that even resembles the live music industry as we know it today, there was Ron Delsener. The 87-year-old concert promoter has been booking shows in New York City going all the way back to the summer of 1964, when he brought the Beatles to Forest Hills Tennis Stadium for two nights. (Tickets were $5.50 plus a 45-cent federal tax.)

In the decades that followed, Delsener grew into the undisputed live music kingpin of New York, booking thousands upon...

The music world is mourning a Canadian legend.

‘Something To Talk About’ Songwriter Shirley Eikhard Dies
Image
Shirley Eikhard, the singer-songwriter who supplied songs for Cher, Emmylou Harris, Anne Murray, Chet Atkins and found lasting fame penning Bonnie Raitt‘s Grammy-winning 1991 hit “Something to Talk About”, has died. She was 67.

Eikhard died Thursday at Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville, Ontario, due to complications from cancer, said publicist Eric Alper.

The blues-rock smash hit “Something to Talk About” was written in 1985 and Eikhard had offered it to Murray and other artists, who all declined to record it. Then years later Raitt left a message on Eikhard’s phone saying she’d just recorded it. Raitt said later she’d discovered the song on a demo Eikhard had sent and admired it.

Shirley Eikhard Dies: Songwriter For Grammy-Winning ‘Something To Talk About’ Was 67
Image
Shirley Eikhard, the songwriter behind Bonnie Raitt‘s Grammy-winning 1991 hit “Something to Talk About,” has died. She was 67 and died Thursday at Headwaters Health Care centre in Orangeville, Ontario from cancer complications.

In addition to Raitt, Eikhard had songs covered by Cher, Emmylou Harris, Anne Murray, and Chet Atkins.

Eikard wrote “Something to Talk About” in 1985, but initially had trouble placing it with talent. Years later, Raitt left a message on Eikhard’s phone saying she she’d just recorded it from a demo Eikhard had sent.

The song was the first single from Raitt’s 1991 album Luck of the Draw and spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 5. Raitt won best pop vocal performance at the 1992 Grammy Awards, and her album was also nominated in the record of the year category.

Raitt remembered Eikhard on Twitter, saying she was “deeply saddened,” adding, “I will be forever grateful...

Jody Miller, Country Music Legend, Dead At 80
Image
Grammy-winning country singer Jody Miller has died. She was 80. The celebrated songstress died at her house in Blanchard, Oklahoma, due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

Miller’s first big hit came in 1964 with her song, “He Walks Like a Man”, followed by her smash-hit single, “Queen of the House”, which earned Miller a Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1966.

Miller is celebrated as a pioneer for crossover female vocalists, moving from the pop/folk genre into the country music sphere, which paved the way for many artists who came after, including Linda Ronstadt, Anne Murray and many others.

“Jody Miller’s talent cannot be overstated. She had this innate, God-given ability to interpret and communicate with the most beautiful tones and inflection,” Miller’s longtime rep, Jennifer McMullen, shared in a statement issued on Thursday. “She made it look and sound so easy that it sometimes...

Shania Twain: ‘This is a historically challenging time for women’
Image
When asked to explain how she became the best-selling female artist in the history of country music, Shania Twain keeps landing on the same two f-words: fear and fun. “I’ve had to face my fears so many times in my life,” she says. “Sometimes you can walk right through those fears. Other times you have to back off and wait it out. It’s not always a choice.” She shrugs. “Losing my voice was scary. Losing my husband and collaborator was very scary.” But, through it all, she has remained insistent on a woman’s “prerogative to have a little fun”.

Now 57, she tells me it’s the “fun, fearless” side of her that she’s channelling in her buoyant new single, “Waking Up Dreaming”, from a sixth album expected to drop in 2023. With a nod to a younger generation of boys and girls donning boas and sequins to...

Laflamme Ouster: Open Letter To Bell Outlines Sexism, Ageism Faced By Women At Work
Image
An open letter signed by a long list of Canadian luminaries is taking aim at Bell Media’s abrupt dismissal of Lisa Laflamme as anchor of the company’s flagship newscast.

In a two-page spread in today’s Globe and Mail, the missive signed by a who’s who of Canadian arts, business and politics — including Margaret Norrie McCain, Anne Murray and Jim Balsillie — says Laflamme was a ratings leader for the company “until one thing changed: the colour of her hair.”

The letter to the board of directors and management of Bce and Bell Canada says the ousting of the award-winning TV news anchor in the prime of her career underscores the sexism and ageism women continue to face at work.

It says the “business decision” to dismiss Laflamme has destroyed trust in Bell Media and questions how the company will “make things right.”

The letter comes a day...

Hair-Raising Prometheus Sequel Shows 79-year-old Scott Still Has It While Dual Fassbender Is Show-Stealer
'Alien: Covenant' review: Michael Fassbender plays android brothers David and Walter in this effective sequel to Ridley Scott's muddled 'Prometheus.' 'Alien: Covenant' review: Recapturing 'some of the excitement, awe, and horror' of 1979 original Before we get to Alien: Covenant, a rant about its predecessor, Prometheus. The problem with Ridley Scott's 2012 return to the Alien universe is that the more we learned about the skeletal, seething, phallic, vicious xenomorphs, the looser their hold on our cinematic subconscious. Much of the effectiveness of Scott's 1979 franchise starter lies in its cruel randomness; the tragedy of a horrible death being the result of bumping into the wrong stranger on the wrong street on the wrong night. Jettisoning such primal simplicity, Prometheus suggested a farfetched connection between the aliens and mankind. The result was a muddled attempt at expanding the Alien universe so it could address no less than the origins of humanity.

'Supermensch' Shep Gordon looks back on a wild ride of sex, drugs and rock and roll
Shep Gordon
Los Angeles — You might not know who Shep Gordon is, but you've certainly felt his impact. As a manager extraordinaire who has shepherded the careers of everyone from Alice Cooper and Teddy Pendergrass to Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck, Gordon has had a wild ride. He was there for the early rock explosion, not just rubbing shoulders with people like Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, but working with them, figuring out the business of show with a whole crop of exciting artists as a defining fixture of that bedrock. Naturally, then, someone was going to be interested in trying to capture that presence in a film. But Gordon's is a life that extends beyond entertainment, which of course makes it all the more fascinating. He maintains a friendship with the Dalai Lama, for instance (though he would say he's merely of service to His Holiness). He's also an expert storyteller,...

Film Review: More Questions Than Answers in ‘Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon’
Chicago – Not much is really revealed about the subject of the documentary “Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon,” co-directed by comedian Mike Myers. Shep is a rock star agent, Shep gets rich, Shep shares his Hawaiian beach condo with big stars, Shep represents gourmet chefs, Shep likes to cook and Shep strangely wants kids, despite being in his sixties and not being able to maintain any domestic relationship. There is no there in this film, only the spoils of good representation.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

There are definitely more questions than answers by the end of this film, regarding what is revealed about Shep Gordon – and more importantly, what isn’t revealed. He seems a nice enough guy on the surface, but a “super-mensch”? You really have to back up such a title with some real humanity, not getting multi-million contracts and having a nice beach condo. There is no doubt that Shep Gordon...

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon
If you love show-business stories, as I do, you’ll lap up Supermensch. The saga of Shep Gordon’s remarkable career is so entertaining and unlikely that it couldn’t have been invented. How does a newcomer to Los Angeles go from dealing drugs to managing major rock acts like Alice Cooper? Who would think that an intimate of Janis Joplin would wind up representing wholesome Canadian songbird Anne Murray? How on earth did this music industry maven find himself launching the television career of top chefs like Emeril Lagasse…and then aligning himself with the Dalai Lama? You have to hear the stories first-hand to appreciate them, and Gordon is a thoroughly engaging raconteur. He also...

Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon Review
There are few people on earth with more famous friends than longtime Hollywood manager Shep Gordon. Although, few people on earth even know who Shep is. For those unfamiliar with the name, he was the iconoclastic manager to some of the bigger stars in show business, from Alice Cooper to Emeril Lagasse. Those two men owe much of their celebrity status to this brilliant manager; fortunately, true to his admiration of karma, Shep is now getting a favour in return and is the star of his own documentary.

Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon is not just a supremely entertaining glimpse at the high life of Hollywood, but also a sympathetic look at a man who achieved much in his life, partied with the most illustrious friends at the most lavish parties, but had a gaping hole inside. Shep’s journey is a Hollywood story as classic as the stars he served,...

Shep Gordon Talks Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon, Why Mike Myers Made the Film, and Creating the Celebrity Chef
Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Mike Myers’ directorial debut, follows the life of veteran talent manager Shep Gordon whose career began with a chance encounter in 1968 with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Gordon went on to become the consummate Hollywood insider known for managing the careers of Alice Cooper, Blondie, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass, Raquel Welch, and others, and for inventing the celebrity chef. Myers first met Gordon in 1991 when he sought the rights to use one of Cooper’s songs in Wayne’s World. The two have been good friends ever since. Opening in limited release on June 6th, the fascinating documentary features interviews with Cooper, Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, Tom Arnold, Carolyn Pfeiffer, and super chef Emeril Lagasse. I recently landed an exclusive interview with Gordon who talked about what inspired Myers to make a film about him, how hard work, imagination and...

Review: Mike Myers' Directorial Debut 'Supermensch' is Filled with Wild Showbiz Tales
Shep Gordon
"Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon," the directorial debut of Mike Myers, is a vaudeville celebrity remembrance of mega-manager Shep Gordon by stars who might have starved without Gordon’s help. "Who was (or is) Shep Gordon?" might have been an appropriate title for all but show biz insiders, but it wouldn't have conveyed the reverence (albeit often obscene) that went into this homage/doc. Gordon shaped and saved the careers of many -- Alice Cooper, Anne Murray, Luther Vandross, Emeril Lagasse -- and even in the swarm of show-biz archaeology out there, it will be a novelty, given Gordon's longevity across the entertainment industry and the marquee friendships that have lasted. Shep Gordon was a Long Island kid who went to the University of Buffalo -- Harvey Weinstein's alma mater, in case you didn’t know -- and ended up in Los Angeles at the Landmark Motel in Hollywood.

Don’t Menschion It: Myers’ Debut a Loving Tribute to a Notable Friend

Those that savor uncomplicated glimpses into the oft castigated entertainment industry will most likely revel in the directorial debut of actor Mike Myers, the documentary, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, which details the life and times of noted entertainment industry manager Gordon, a close friend of Myers. And it seems that the delightful and enigmatic Mr. Gordon has many other such friends, and from all walks of life. Certainly an engaging and dynamic subject, Myer’s doc plays like a glorious love letter to a cherished friend and therein lies the rub. The man who, we’re told, doesn’t have a single negative thing to say about anyone, apparently has nothing negative to be said about him. And so, this rosy tinted doc, while certainly entertaining to watch and filled with fun anecdotes, perhaps would...

The Trailer for Mike Myers’ Passion Project Supermensch
I was thinking about Mike Myers the other day (as you do) and got to wondering, what the hell has he been up to? It’s a question I’m sure a lot of you ask yourselves when you’re raiding your movie shelf and come across his name. The dude hasn’t been seen on the big screen since Inglourious Basterds in 2009 (he was last heard in 2010’s Shrek Forever After). Well, it turns out he finally has something to show for his absence in the form of a stellar trailer for his documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon.

The film focuses on the career of talent manager Shep Gordon who you will see from the trailer has some big names to back up claims that he’s the nicest guy to know in Hollywood. Who can argue with Michael Douglas or Sylvester Stallone?

'Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon' trailer: Meet the guy behind the guy -- Video
Supermensch (2013)
“Shep Gordon is the nicest person I’ve ever met, hands down,” Mike Myers says of the subject of his new film, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. The uber-manager also had a hand in the careers of everyone from Alice Cooper to Anne Murray, which is why the friendliest dude in Hollywood makes for perfect documentary fodder.

In a new trailer for the film, Michael Douglas says the word “mensch” is synonymous with Gordon. Sylvester Stallone calls him a protector: “He keeps the wolf from the door,” the actor says. Emeril Lagasse credits Gordon for creating the concept of the celebrity chef.

First Trailer for Mike Myers' 'Supermensch' Documentary
Comedian Mike Myers stepped behind the camera for his directorial debut last year, delivering Supermensch: Legend of Shep Gordon, which ended up premiering at the Toronto Film Festival. I missed it there, but have just learned it will be playing in the Seattle Film Festival and with me not going to Cannes this year, I'm hoping to catch a lot more movies at this year's Seattle Festival. As for Supermensch, here's the plot: In 1991, music manager Shep Gordon held Mike Myers over a barrel a few weeks before shooting Wayne's World regarding an Alice Cooper song Myers wanted to use in the film. They have been close friends ever since. 22 years later, the story of Gordon's legendary life in the uber fast lane is now told in Myers' directorial debut. And this time it's Myers who has Gordon over a barrel. Capitalist, protector, hedonist, pioneer, showman, shaman . . . Supermensch. Shep Gordon is the consummate Hollywood insider.

Watch: Trailer For Mike Myers-Directed Doc 'Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon'
There are some people who were just made for fame, and legendary promoter/manager Shep Gordon is one of them. His story of moving to Los Angeles and running into Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison at the same time is the stuff of mythology, and his career managing some of the biggest names ever is epic. Now, Mike Myers (yes, Austin Powers himself) is telling the story in the entertaining documentary "Supermensch: The Legend Of Shep Gordon," and the first trailer is here to give you a good idea of what to expect. Featuring appearances from close friends (Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Arnold, Sammy Hagar), clients (who ranged from Anne Murray to Alice Cooper) and more, the documentary is pretty terrific look at Gordon's career, also chronicling his personal life, which was far less flashy than his public persona. Making for some of the more touching portions of the doc,...

The 15 Best Oscar-Losing Songs (Of The Past 50 Years)
The Academy Award for Best Original Song has gone to some legendary movie anthems — “The Way We Were,” “Take My Breath Away,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “My Heart Will Go On” all notched the Oscars’ highest musical honor. But what about the anthems that don’t win? The winners among the losing nominees? Today we honor the best losing songs of the past 50 years since some of them are, um, the greatest songs ever. (I’ve limited this tally to the past half-century since the rock & roll era is what we really care about, no?)

15. “I Have Nothing” from The Bodyguard

Lost to: “A Whole New World” from Aladdin

Two songs from The Bodyguard‘s soundtrack were nominated for Oscars (this and “Run to You”) but “I Have Nothing” is a decade-best belter that will live on forever in part thanks to its innumerable American Idol performances. Though Whitney Houston...

Tiff 2013 Review: ‘Supermensch – The Legend of Shep Gordon’
Stars: Shep Gordon,Alice Cooper, Michael Douglas,Tom Arnold, Anne Murray, Sylvester Stallone | Directed by Mike Myers

Review by Scott Clark of Cinehouse

Mike Myers’ directorial debut is proof not only that he’s a skilled director and impressive documenter, but the subject of his film is probably one of the coolest men to ever live. Shep Gordon, manager extraordinaire, is a power house of productivity, a messiah of good times, and an all-round nice guy. He’s managed Alice Cooper since the beginning of his career, practically invented the concept of the celebrity chef, and has managed to intertwine his existence with the mint of Hollywood and rock royalty by being one of the world’s greatest hosts. So says Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon.

The key to Myers’ film is that he has a genuine respect for Gordon, like the rest of the stars who pop up...

Mike Myers' Directorial Debut 'Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon' Is Filled With Wild Showbiz Tales

Mike Myers eyes Supermensch
Shep Gordon
The comedian and actor is partnering with A&E IndieFilms on a documentary about the life of talent manager Shep Gordon that will mark his directorial debut.

“I met Shep Gordon in 1991 on the set of Wayne’s World,” said Myers. “I thought he was a perfect combination of Brian Epstein, Marshall McLuhan and Mr Magoo.

“I’ve been trying to get Shep to agree to let me make a movie about him for 10 years. Last year he finally he said yes. I loved him like a brother before we started making this film and now having sifted through his life and his legacy, I love him even more.”

As a music manager, Gordon has represented celebrities such as Alice Cooper, Blondie, Luther Vandross and Raquel Welch.

He is also credited with the creation of the celebrity chef and monetising the culinary arts into a multi-billion dollar industry.

Anne Murray Remembers Rita MacNeil
Anne Murray
Anne Murray said Cape Breton singer-songwriter Rita MacNeil will be remembered as "just a really good soul, a really good person who just happened to be a supremely talented singer-songwriter."

Murray, speaking this morning to Jian Ghomeshi on CBC Radio's Q from Florida, said she was "shocked and saddened" by the news of MacNeil's death last night but praised her for her songs and talent.

"Everyone was very proud of the fact that we finally had a Nova Scotian and a woman speaking for us and putting into words how we all felt as Nova Scotians, as proud Nova Scotians," Murray said. "And she did it so beautifully, she was a very talented songwriter.

"She had such strong feelings about Cape Breton as I do about Nova Scotia and Cape Breton too. And I could feel that and she wrote about it so eloquently. Whatever she wrote just seemed to...

The Deal Behind Anne Murray & 'Family Guy'
Anne Murray
Chances are the average "Family Guy" viewer had no clue who Anne Murray was ... up until the Sunday, Feb. 18 episode.

In "Chris Cross," Stewie became obsessed with Anne Murray's "Snowbird." The obsession soon spread to Brian and the two traveled to meet the Canadian singer in order to learn the true meaning of the song. Murray voiced herself.

Creator Seth MacFarlane took to Twitter to explain the inspiration behind the storyline.

Watch Stewie hear "Snowbird" for the first time and meet Anne Murray below and then give the song a listen yourself.

"Family Guy" airs Sundays, 9 p.m. on Fox.

Family Guy Review: Wasting a Cialis
"Chris Cross" was proof that one should now doubt Family Guy.

Indeed, while last week’s “Valentine’s Day in Quahog” looked like that it was further evidence of the show’s decline, this installment was so bad that it’s a contender for the worst episode of the series.

I mean, this was simply unfunny on every level.

The story felt hackneyed. Chris had to be Meg’s slave? Gee, that’s never been done before. And then Chris ran away. Getting away to Herbert’s should have been a source of much comedy, but the premise was bungled from the start, with the only funny part being a gag involving Herbert bringing his bed closer to Chris’ bed, then taking it away when he farted.

Its conclusion didn’t feel satisfying, either, thanks to Chris basically just treating Herbert like a jerk and leaving. The genesis of the story,...
