‘The Friend’ Review: Drama About a Dog-and-Human Bond Barks Up a Familiar Tree
Image
Those who live in the Tri-State area—or are masochistic voyeurs of Manhattan real estate—may experience writer-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s The Friend more like a home-invasion horror film than a drama. Writer and professor Iris (Naomi Watts) can afford to live in the West Village off of Washington Square Park thanks to inheriting a rent-controlled unit from her father. But that sweet deal comes under threat when she’s forced to assume custodianship of Apollo, a Great Dane belonging to her recently departed mentor, Walter (Billy Murray), as her apartment building has a rule against pets.

Discount some of those localized stakes, though, and this adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s source novel plays more like a standard-issue story about learning to live with grief. Murray is perfect casting for a character like Walter, who only appears in a few scenes. His larger-than-life persona casts a long shadow even in his absence.

Chevy Chase & Bill Murray Reunite for Warm Photo at ‘SNL50’ After Party After Iconic Feud
Image
Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary special was full of surprises and shocking reunions, but perhaps none more so than former cast members Chevy Chase and Bill Murray seemingly burying the hatchet. Chase was one of SNL‘s original cast members from 1975 to 1976 and became the first former cast member to host in 1978. Murray was part of the line-up during Chase’s episode as host, and the story goes that the pair got into a fight before the show after the Lost In Translation star reportedly made a rude comment about Chase’s marriage to Jacqueline Carlin. “Billy Murray and I came to fisticuffs, but we never really ended up hitting each other,” Chase told Esquire in 2010. “We tried, but Belushi got in the middle and we both ended up hitting John. And if anybody deserved to be slapped in the forehead, it was John for instigating it all.” The...

The Friend Trailer: Naomi Watts Inherits Billy Murray’s Best Friend
Image
The Room Next Door wasn’t the only Sigrid Nunez adaptation to premiere at fall festivals last year. David Siegel and Scott McGehee’s Montana Story follow-up The Friend finds Naomi Watts as a woman in NYC who looks after the dog of her friend (Bill Murray) after he passes away. The Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF selection was picked up by Bleecker Street who have now released the trailer ahead of a March 28 release in NYC and a wide release on April 4.

Here’s the synopsis: “In The Friend, adapted from the bestselling novel, Iris (Naomi Watts) finds her comfortable New York life upended when her friend and mentor Walter (Bill Murray) bequeaths her his Great Dane, Apollo. The regal yet intractable beast is a constant reminder of Walter and causes various problems—yet as Iris bonds with Apollo, she begins to cope with her past, her lost friend, and her own creative inner life.

10 Best Time Loop Episodes of Iconic TV Shows, Ranked
Image
One of the most beloved storytelling conventions is the time loop. These are stories in which a character or characters perpetually relives the same sequence of events. The Billy Murray comedy Groundhog Day is probably the best-known example of a time loop story, but countless versions of this tale appear in classic TV shows.

Narratively, the causes of these time loops differ, but to escape from them, characters typically have to face some sort of hard truth or make a difficult decision. This makes this an ideal setup for writers looking for a way to push their characters beyond their limits. The cyclical nature of these episodes also creates the opportunity to add flavor and humor to these difficult life lessons.

Mulder and Scully Struggle to See the Loop They're In The X-Files: Season 6, Episode 14 — "Monday"

The classic sci-fi procedural The X-Files takes on the time loop trope in "Monday.

Bill Murray And Chevy Chase Got Into A Physical Fight During SNL
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The late-night sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025. With five decades of television history behind "SNL," it should come as no surprise that there has been plenty of drama behind the scenes. Aside from all the chaos depicted in Jason Reitman's movie "Saturday Night," depicting the evening of the show's premiere back in October 1975, the early seasons of "SNL" sparked a lot of tension backstage, especially when the series became a hit, and previously unknown comedians started becoming famous.

Chevy Chase was the first and biggest benefactor of the success of "SNL" right out of the gate, largely because, as the host of the news satire Weekend Update segment, he was the only one saying his name on the show on a regular basis. As has been recounted by many who worked at "SNL,...

Lucy Liu Explains Bill Murray Confrontation on 'Charlie's Angels' Set
Image
Before Kill Bill, Lucy Liu had her big-screen breakout in Charlie's Angels, a 2000 action film that also starred Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. Additionally, Bill Murray played a supporting role in the remake of the original television series as John Bosley. The Ghostbusters actor has been the subject of on-set misconduct allegations over the past few years, while past collaborators are now coming out with stories of their own. Liu is the latest former co-star to recall a story of a confrontation with Murray, this time for "inexcusable language" while filming Charlie's Angels.

During an interview with The Guardian, Liu discussed the long-rumored story about her on-set dispute with Murray while filming Charlie's Angels. Liu had previously said that her co-star used language that “was inexcusable and unacceptable," prompting her to respond strongly to his transgressions. The actress does not go into detail on exactly what was said, but it's...

Chevy Chase Says Animosity ‘Ruined My Performance’ When He Returned to ‘SNL’
Image
After leaving Saturday Night Live a few episodes into its second season, it didn’t take long for Chevy Chase to return to 30 Rock. He hosted in February during the show’s third year, but it wasn’t a pleasant homecoming.

After receiving a series of smart-ass answers from Chase in October 1978, just a few months after that SNL hosting gig, talk-show host Dick Cavett begged for a straight response. “I don’t suppose there’s any chance of getting you to talk seriously about — what can I call it? — the rumored animosity that your friends on Saturday Night Live are supposed to have felt when you left. They thought maybe you endangered their careers and yours.”

Chase obliged — sorta. “I can talk about that seriously,” he said. “Here?”

Chase said he wasn’t fully dialed in on the rumors as he didn’t get back to New York much.

We’re All Now Realizing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reboot Trilogy Managed to Ignore the Og’s Most Iconic Hero
Image
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s soft reboot has had its fair share of ups and downs since it was released. Some love it for the visuals and the reworked characters in the game; others, not really. But Activision missed one who was pivotal to the game.

There wasn’t a great amount of screentime for the iconic Captain MacMillan in the popular military shooter. Him, alongside Price, may have failed to blow Zakhaev’s brain in Pripyat, but he did blow fans’ minds away.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Ignored the Og

Barry Sloane’s Captain Price in Modern Warfare is most certainly gathering intel on things from him. The man, the myth, the legend. This is what I think of MacMillan whenever I think of the soft reboot of the franchise.

Ghostbusters Is Officially A $1 Billion Franchise Thanks To Frozen Empire's Box Office
Image
It's official: "Ghostbusters" is now a $1 billion franchise. Just shy of 40 years after the classic horror/comedy originally arrived in theaters back in 1984, the films have hit a major milestone at the box office thanks to the latest entry, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Thanks to the new film's opening weekend haul, the series has now ascended the ranks to become one of the relatively few franchises in cinema history that can claim to have made ten figures or more in ticket sales.

Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" opened to $45 million over the weekend domestically, putting it on top of the charts in its debut. The Sony Pictures release also pulled in $16 million internationally, giving the film a $61 million start to its theatrical run. Looking at the bigger picture, that was enough to push the franchise past the $1 billion mark. The films have collectively grossed $1.005 billion through the years across four decades and five films.

10 Deleted Movie Scenes That Deserved to be Cut, According to Reddit
Image
Deleted scenes bring tons of value, especially for fans of their original content. The clips give meaningful insight into how a film could have gone. In many cases, deleted scenes even enhance the movie's characters and storylines, as seen with the Petunia Dursley clip from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1.

However, not all deleted scenes offer appreciated content. Some scenes actually hinder a film's success in varying ways, such as including an awkward Avengers kneel or showing Sauron's physical form. Redditors have analyzed that selection and declared which deleted film scenes were right to be cut from their final products.

10 Best Comedies of All Time, Ranked by Viewers
Image
Creating timeless comedies is a truly remarkable accomplishment for filmmakers. It’s no secret that all movie genres have the potential to age poorly, but comedy, especially, has an expiration date due to its contextual and individualistic nature. What’s funny today might not make sense in the future, and what tickles some people may leave others cold.

When it comes to picking the best comedy movies of all time, durability must be taken into account. How well does this film hold up now? Will it still be hilarious years from now?

After intense research, we’ve found the ten highest-rated comedy films that represent laugh-out-loud hilarity and will stand the test of time. We can’t guarantee these will elicit uproarious laughter from everyone – then again, if they don’t…maybe you should take a step back and reassess your comedic sensibilities – or at least vote for your favorite comedy on IMDb.

On the trail of a con man
Richard John Taylor had no problem attracting investors to his films. After all, he was a senior editor on EastEnders, ran a production company with Louis Theroux and had a lucrative deal with ITV. There was only one problem…

At the end of Tina Renton's book, You Can't Hide, she thanks her friend Richard John Taylor for everything he's done for her. Taylor, a film-maker, had become a saviour of sorts. He had met her through Rape Crisis in August 2011 when she was at her most vulnerable, befriended her, gave her a job as his personal assistant and made her feel worthwhile again.

Renton's story was as inspirational as it was shocking. She had been abused by her stepfather from the age of six. At 14, she told her mother, but her mother said if she went to the police, the family would be left homeless. She threw her partner out of the house,...

Trying out the films of Poundland
Feature Matt Edwards 22 Feb 2013 - 07:03

For cheap entertainment, look no further than your local discount shop. Here are the three gems Matt managed to dig up...

Conjecture over how we will watch films in the future is always riveting. We’re all lucky, then, to live in a time when you’re unlikely to go as long as seven minutes without being accosted by a self-proclaimed expert who’d like to vomit their opinions on the subject into your ears.

I have no interest in going fully digital until Poundland stops selling DVDs. For those unfamiliar with Poundland, it’s a chain of large shops in the UK that sell a wide variety of items for a pound. Some of the stuff is great, some terrible and some utterly baffling. There aren’t many places you can go to buy a toilet brush, an army action figure, a box of After Eight mints,...

Airborne Flying to VOD and DVD
By Seth Metoyer, MoreHorror.com

The thriller/horror movie Airborne, starring Star Wars’ Mark Hamill, Craig Conway, Billy Murray and Julian Glover flies to VOD September 14th and on DVD and Digital Download October 16th.

The key art is pretty wicked looking and from what little I can tell from the trailer, Mark Hamill brings a side of creepiness to his role. Check out the trailer below the official details from Image Entertainment.

From The Press Release:

Turbulence is the least of their worries. On October 16th, Image Entertainment presents Airborne, a “Twilight Zone”-infused horror/thriller starring Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill (Star Wars Trilogy,). Stars: Cuba Gooding Jr., Dolph Lundgren, Billy Murray, Claudia Bassols, Louis Mandylor | Written by Benjamin Shahrabani, Derek Kolstad | Directed by William Kaufman

The latest in a long line of Cuba Gooding Jr. starring hit-man movies that seem to be inspired by Collateral, (although less so than the previous flick we reviewed, Hit List), this time round Cuba takes on the one man mountain that is Dolph Lundgren. Set in Prague, One in the Chamber sees skilled assassin Ray Carver (Gooding Jr.) hired by gang leader, Bobby Suverov (Leo Gregory), to eliminate his competitiors, the Ivanov brothers. However when Demyan Ivanov (Mandylor) escapes Suverov hires an eccentric Soviet killing machine known as ‘The Wolf’ (Lundgren), to take out the surviving Demyan, as well as Carver. However in a bizarre turn of events, Ivanov hires his brothers killer, Carver, to eliminate the Suverov brothers. With twists and double-crosses a plenty,...

Airborne Veers Off-Course: A Movie Review
*here be some spoilers. Director: Dominic Burns. Writer: Paul Chronnell. Cast: Mark Hamill, Craig Conway, Billy Murray, Sebastian Street, Simon Phillips, Julian Glover, Alan Ford, Gemma Atkinson, Rita Ramnani, and Andrew Shim. Chelsea Films is releasing Airborne across the United Kingdom on DVD July 30th. This is a film that puts a dozen passengers on a doomed flight across the Atlantic. One of their passengers is an ancient Chinese spirit that likes to possess the living. The other flight crew and trapped passengers are understandably shook up when the ghost of Chang starts offing characters via gory suicides. The action is almost laughable as the plot of a cursed vase threatens to ground this aircraft for good. And, something strange begins to happen as you watch this film. If you are a United Kingdom film fan, then you might notice that director Dominic Burns has recruited a few familiar faces.

DVD Review: Airborne
Airborne

Stars: Mark Hamill, Craig Conway, Billy Murray, Sebastian Street, Simon Phillips, Julian Glover, Gemma Atkinson, Alan Ford | Written by Paul Chronnell | Directed by Dominic Burns

A product of British indie outfit Black and Blue Films, Airborne stars a veritable who’s who of British film and television (most of whom have appeared in previous Black and Blue Films productions) along with the movies main draw – former Star Wars actor, Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill.

The film follows Atlantic Sky Airways Flight 686, the last flight out of East Midlands Airport thanks to a severe storm. Shortly after take-off, several passengers become concerned when one of their number inexplicably goes missing. Their anxieties are further increased when it becomes apparent that the flight has veered off course and it is revealed that the plane is carrying an interesting item of cargo: a rare and extremely valuable ancient Chinese vase. The assumption is that terrorists are responsible,...

The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan (2012) Movie Review
“The Rise and Fall of a White Collar Hooligan” is a Brit crime drama written and directed by Paul Tanter, one of the diamond geezers behind the recent “Jack” trilogy. This should give a pretty good idea of what to expect, Tanter trying to mix football violence, gangsters, drugs and credit card fraud, with plenty of thick London accents along the way. Starring Nick Nevern (“Strippers vs Werewolves”) in the lead, the film, which lands shortly on region 2 DVD via Momentum, features a supporting cast full of semi-recognisable Brit character actors, including Simon Phillips, Billy Murray and Peter Barrett, all of whom appeared together in the recent Mark Hamill chiller “Airborne”. Nevern plays Mike Jacobs, a standard laddish football hooligan type, who runs into an old friend called Eddie (Phillips) during a good old fashioned riot. Hard up for cash and being pressured by his girlfriend to make something of himself,...

Airborne (2012) Movie Review
“Airborne” is a Brit horror directed by Dominic Burns (“Cut”), whose main draw is probably the presence of “Star Wars” favourite Mark Hamill, making his first appearance in a film from these shores. With a script by TV comedy writer Paul Chronnell, the film also stars a host of semi recognisable Brit talent, including Andrew Shim (“This is England”), Julian Glover (“Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade”), Alan Ford (“Snatch”) and Billy Murray (“Rise of the Footsoldier”). Having recently played the British Independent Film Festival, the film arrives shortly on Region 2 DVD via Chelsea Films. Hamill provides the opening narration, though doesn’t actually make it into the air himself, playing a traffic controller trying to keep track of a flight which suddenly diverts from its planned course during a wintery storm. The passengers (made up of a motley mix of gangsters, soldiers, the inevitable sexed up couple, a priest...

Mark Hamill heads back infront of the camera in new DVD release ‘Airborne’
After spending many a year voice acting The Joker, Mark Hamill is making a rare appearance in front of the cameras in the Twilight Zone-esque thriller Airborne, his first ever starring role in a British film, which is coming out on DVD from Chelsea Films on 23rd July.

A high-altitude thriller in the tradition of such films as Executive Decision, Passenger 57 and Red Eye, with a good dose of Snakes on a Plane, Airborne also stars Julian Glover, Gemma Atkinson, Simon Phillips, Craig Conway, Billy Murray and Sebastian Street. Check out the synopsis, trailer and poster for Airborne below:
