One thing I love about my job here at JoBlo is I’m constantly exposed to films that I may have otherwise passed over. And with a very generic poster (which you can see below), it would have been easy to have Unit 234 pass me by. But I’m here to tell you to not make that mistake, as the film is actually a pretty fun little thriller. Check out my review Here!

We were following news of the cat and mouse thriller Unit 234, which is now going by the extended title Unit 234: The Lockup, closely when the film went into production back in 2022… but then it dropped off the radar for a couple of years. Now it’s ready to make its way out into the world, and while we don’t have information on a North American release at this time, we do know that the film is going to receive a digital release in the UK on September 30th, courtesy of Signature Entertainment. Exclusive: Signature Entertainment has picked up UK and Irish rights to Unit 234, a thriller starring Don Johnson (Knives Out), Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan: First Kill) and Jack Huston (Kill Your Darlings) from sales agent Radiant Films.

The feature is directed by Andy Tennant from a script written by Derek Steiner and is produced by Blythe Frank (Being Charlie), Hadeel Reda (The Ride), Lee Dreyfuss (The Misfits) and Productivity Media’s William Santor (Stockholm) and Doug Murray (Unplugging).

Exclusive: Scott Kennedy’s Falling Forward Films has acquired U.S. theatrical rights to the supernatural thriller Queen of Bones, starring Julia Butters (The Fabelmans), Jacob Tremblay (Room), Martin Freeman (Fargo) and Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), ahead of its February domestic premiere at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, with plans to release the film in theaters this year.

A TIFF 2023 title directed by Robert Budreau (Born to be Blue), the film tells the story of twin siblings Lily (Butters) and Sam (Tremblay), who live at a remote homestead with their widowed father, Malcolm (Freeman), a violinmaker in 1931 Oregon. Nicolas Cage plays a retired Caribbean beach bum-turned-assassin in the trailer for The Retirement Plan, an action comedy thriller from writer/director Tim Brown and Falling Forward Films that’s set to hit theaters on Aug. 25.

Cage is Matt, the estranged father of Ashley (Ashley Greene) and her young daughter Sarah (Thalia Campbell), who get entangled in a criminal gang that threatens their lives. Matt, coming to their rescue, is chased down by gang leader Donnie, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and his lieutenant Bobo (Ron Perlman).

Everything Everywhere All at Once was named best picture at the 95th annual Academy Awards, which were handed out Sunday night.

Everything Everywhere also collected three acting awards, best leading actress for Michelle Yeoh, best supporting actor for Ke Huy Quan and best supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. The film also won the best original screenplay Oscar and the best director trophy for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert — aka Daniels — as well as best film editing for Paul Rogers. Heading into the show, Everything Everywhere led the nominees for the 2023 Oscars, with a total of 11, winning seven.

Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser was named best actor in a leading role for The Whale. German film All Quiet on the Western Front also scooped up four awards, including Oscars for best original score, production design, cinematography and international feature. Avatar: The Way of Water won best visual effects, while Top Gun: Maverick won the sound Oscar.

Ahead of the 2021 Oscars, the academy combined their Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories into one. The films vying for the third annual Best Sound prize are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” “Elvis,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Top Gun: Maverick” (16/5) will be victorious, followed in order of likelihood by “All Quiet on the Western Front” (19/5), “Avatar: The Way of Water” (9/2), “Elvis” (9/2), and “The Batman” (9/2).

The 23 craftspeople included in the current lineup have collectively amassed a whopping 72 previous nominations and 16 wins for their sound work. The one responsible for the largest chunk is Andy Nelson, whose dual bids for “The Batman” and “Elvis” bring him to a record-fortifying career total of 24. To many people – and that includes many academy members – there might be something esoteric about the Best Sound category at the Oscars. And yet it might be one of the most important technical crafts involved with filmmaking. If you don’t understand what the actors are saying, then it’s harder to connect with them or what the filmmaker was trying to achieve. A movie’s score and sound effects also need to be properly recorded and balanced to make any film as much a sonic experience as a visual one.

There are also useful precursors for the category, such as the Cinema Audio Society Awards and the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ Golden Reel Awards, which give a clearer picture of which of the five Oscar nominees are considered the best by their direct peers.

Radiant Films International has released a first look image of Tom Felton and Amanda Crew in Joel David Moore’s psychological thriller Some Other Woman.

The film, also starring Ashley Greene Khoury, follows a woman whisked away to a tropical island by her husband’s work. As months turn to years and unable to leave, she finds her life slowly taken over by another woman.

Sales, finance, and production outfit Radiant is handling worldwide sales for the Productivity Media film, which will world premiere at the upcoming Mammoth Film Festival.

The motion picture academy made it a little easier in 2021 to predict the winners by combining Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing into one category: Best Sound. Both sound mixers and sound editors are recognized in the combined category. Up to six statuettes will be awarded to one production sound mixer, two supervising sound editors and three re-recording mixers. The inaugural winner of Best Sound was, appropriately enough “Sound of Metal.” Last year, this prize went to “Dune.”

The sound branch determines the nominees in two stages. First, members of the branch cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters, announced on December 21, moving on to the second stage. Members who attend screenings of excerpts from these 10 semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated.

It can be difficult to differentiate the sound mixing of a film from the sound editing.

The nominations for the upcoming 95th edition of Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday by hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ leading the pack with as many as nine nominations.

Top Gun: Maverick, The Batman, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dune are among the movies that received multiple Hpa (Hollywood Professional Association) Award nominations. The annual Hpa Awards recognizes postproduction talent in areas including color grading, editing, sound and visual effects.

The voting period runs from September to September, meaning that some of last year’s award season films will compete against this year’s contenders.

The awards will be handed out Nov. 17 at the Hollywood Legion Theater.

Exclusive: Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) has signed on to star in the thriller Unit 234 from director Andy Tennant, which is currently in production in the Cayman Islands.

In the film penned by Derek Steiner, Laurie Saltair (Fuhrman) discovers the comatose man, Clayton, in Unit 234 of her family’s storage facility, while working the night shift alone. What transpires is a thrill ride of a cat-and-mouse game for Laurie and Clayton to survive the night.

Unit 234 is being fully financed by Productivity Media. Blythe Frank, Hadeel Reda and Lee Dreyfus are producing alongside Productivity Media’s William G. Santor & Doug Murray, with Colleen Camp serving as executive producer.

Exclusive: Screen Media has acquired North American rights to the psychological thriller The Immaculate Room, from writer-director Mukunda Michael Dewil (Vehicle 19). The Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment company has slated the title, starring Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth, Ashley Greene and M. Emmet Walsh, for a day-and-date release in the second half of this year.

The Immaculate Room follows a seemingly perfect couple who take part in a psychological experiment that will reward them $5 million if they can stay in a perfectly white room for 50 days. “Four Good Days,” a drama starring Glenn Close and Mila Kunis as mother and daughter that first premiered at Sundance in 2020, has been acquired for North American theatrical release by Vertical Entertainment.

Rodrigo Garcia directs the film, which tells the story of a woman battling drug addiction who begs for one last change from her estranged mother.

Vertical Entertainment will release “Four Good Days” theatrically beginning April 30 and then release it on demand starting May 21.

Based on a true story from Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post writer Eli Saslow, the film is about 31-year-old Molly, who begs her estranged mother, Deb, for help fighting a fierce battle against the demons that have derailed her life.
